I found this book very useful, not just for people in health professions or women. Lots of useful information and real-life examples. The best book on assertiveness I've read.

Former DC Men Against Rape member and national pro-feminist activist Rus Funk based this excellent resource for men on a training manual he used in teaching Men Against Rape's speakers.

It is the first book focusing solely on men confronting rape. It has gained worldwide attention since it went to print. The book offers analysis and exercises to help men end the violence in their lives, to help men challenge other men's violence, and to guide men in offering support to the survivors of rape. In directly challenging our culture of rape, the book demonstrates how racism, homophobia, sexism and pornography support rape. It also gives practical advice on how men can set up and maintain a network of men in their school or community to confront our culture of rape.

This Book is excellent! It taught me many facts on STD's and on how to communicate effectivly with my gynecologist. After reading this book I went to my gynecologist and I realized that he was actually a terrible doctor who could not have cared less about my needs.

This is an impressive book. By and large I've found books about police are written in a positive but unintellectual style. The authors retell the stories as told by the officers but don't add much in the telling. Jackall essentializes the stories in a style that in itself would make him a good storyteller but goes a step farther. He weaves these stories into a historical background of the police departments and the culture in which the detectives exist. As a result, Jackall smoothly shifts between well told close-ups of particular characters, and fascinating wide angle views of the history and organizational culture the subjects function within.

Accurate reporting from the field. It will bring a smile to anyone who's enterprise brings them into contact with the public "after hours". Every single one unique and a joy to chat with. Been through everything in the book several times. All true to life.

Although this is an academic monograph, one in a series on the sociology and social psychology of religion, it is an extraordinary and compelling book.
On one level, it is a study of the remarkable evolution of a cult-like group (the Sullivan Institute/Fourth Wall), initially a small and not wildly out-of-mainstream therapeutic community on Manhattan's Upper West Side, through a series of seemingly disjunct phases: a phase of hedonistic self-actualization; a phase of regimented self-sacrifice in the name of a higher social good; and eventual implosive dissolution in a wave of scandal, partisanship and mutual recrimination.
On another level, it could be described as an object lesson in the old and well-worn dictum that absolute power - in this case, the power exercised by the SI/FW leadership, who evidently lifted a page or two from Stalin - corrupts absolutely. Another, more modish moral might be summarized thus: beneath any therapy (and, arguably, behind many religious movements) professing unique insight into, and unique ability to resolve, "problems of living," there probably lurks a hefty dose of megalomania, cynicism, greed, or some combination of these.
On yet another level, it as an attempt to situate the SI/FW phenomenon - and, by extension, other therapeutic/religious/political groups and movements - in the broader American social, cultural and political context of the times.
Finally, the book represents the author's personal account of her own involvement with the SI/FW. Although she is clearly out of sympathy with many aspects of what the group stood for, her treatment is generally dispassionate and thoughtful. Her prose tends to be terse - one gets the impression of reading the highly condensed version of some 1000-page tome. Nonetheless, Siskind has done a brilliant job of describing and analyzing an extremely complex, subtle and troubling phenomenon.

This is a very inexpensive but handy guide that everybody should own. It is full of advice on ailments ranging from the common cold to things you might otherwise be embarrassed to ask a pharmacist or doctor about (not that I speak from experience regarding the latter). My sister-in-law gave me this book a few years back as a gift, and over the years I have opened it many times as a quick reference. It has probably saved me a couple of doctor visits, and if this book does that just once, then it has covered the cost of purchase. Best of all, the information is all clearly and consistently presented and spelled out in simple language. You neither have to attempt to read a doctor's illegible scribblings, nor have to filter through any complicated medical jargon.

Granted, the availability of free medical information online has reduced the need for this kind of material, but in purchasing this book, the information is always right at your fingertips and easily indexed so that you won't have to go through the process of accessing a search engine and figuring out what is necessary and unnecessary. Sometimes, the internet gives you more than you need. This book gives you only what you need to know.

This is an excellent resource for leaders of groups for abused women and could also be useful for individuals trying to assess the impact of emotional abuse on their lives. It helps women make up their own minds what to do and offers excellent group exercises. This book should be kept in print and on many bookshelves! Highly recommended.
