Readable, yet thickly and richly argued; interdisciplinary in scope, yet balanced in its organization and presentation; this book is a welcome contribution to the growing sub-disciplines within both history and science to which this book belongs. Surely, Professor Hammonds must be as exceptional in her teaching as her erudition reveals her to be in this book.

This is a completely new look at race relations in America
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1997-04-06
This book is a sleeper that will ultimately find its place among the best books on race, children, and Black-Jewish relationships in post War America. Unlike so many books that relie on the invented memory of a few primary actors, this scholarly account closely follows the crisis among Blacks and Jews through the experiences of children. Besides being an excellent political biography of Mamie and Kenneth Clark, the book is a troubling journey into the lives of the children of the great black migration. Despite its seemingly narrow focus, this is a rich narrative account of recent American history.

Great Timesaver and May Find a New Site for You

Review Date: 2005-11-21
The daily news, or perhaps even more important the minute's news, can be of vital importance in business operations. The impact of a terrorist bomb in Saudi Arabia or a sudden hailstorm in the American midwest can dramatically alter the prices on commodity contracts.

Fortunately there exist services on the web that provide up to the minute news alerts at little or no cost (although there are premium offerings as well). This book has researched 27 news alert services that it has analyzed in detail and many more that it covers in a more general manner.

One interesting thing about their analysis is that they go into great detail about the criteria they used in their analysis. This allows you to potentially change the rankings depending on your evaluation of their criteria. Screen shots of most of the sites illustrate what they consider to be the strengths and weaknesses of that site's approach.

This book would be a valuable time saver, and if it identifies a site you don't know about could prove invaluable.

Chronlc Muscle Pain

Older, but clearer

I have read newer books on chronic muscle pain and Fibromaylagia, and they get very contorted in their interpretations. Rightfully so, these are extremely frustrating conditions with no simple solutions, so it is easy to see why people want to grab on to any tangible explanation they can find for pain and fatigue.
Davidson lays these group of problems out in a very clear, uncluttered manner. You won't read this book and think "it's all in my head," nor will you read hypothesis after hypothesis about causes of these problems. You'll find clear explanations about how brain and body interact to cause a lot of pain.
Not an overwhelming amount of complicated information, but basic ways to help yourself starting now, and to see results right away if you are determined.

This is a useful book because it is so clean and concise. He presents a simple program, uses good examples from his practice. What you need to apply his program is a certain level of insight on your own responses to stress and pain, and the determination to make time and concentrate on making some alterations in your life. (relaxing and fun, stretching, exercise, various forms of stress relief).

You won't be put off by this book unless you wanted a complicated, medical explanation of some as yet unknown pathology causing your discomfort. That's not available and may never be, so you might as well start helping yourself.

Anthropology, history, and a journalistic slant all combine to provide a thorough understanding of how government and commercial mechanisms can harm a neighborhood and, thus, its inhabitants.

Maria Vesperi is an incredibly gifted writer who clearly knows the literature of sociology, anthropology, and economics. There's a good dose of symbolic theory woven into her text and it comes across seamlessly. A great read!

Neurodynamics...easy to learn from...necessary for effective treatment outcomes.
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-24
I am an Australian trained Manip therapist from the States. I am familiar with much of the literature and handful of books on Neurodynamics and the current pain sciences.

I find that Clinical Neurodynamics was a much more straightforward clinically based book than other Neurodynamic books available. Michael Shacklock was able to write a book that instructed clinicians on Neurodynamic assessment and treatment techniques that are based on the vastly growing and current research regarding the pain sciences and neural tissue dysfunctions, making it easy to read and follow.

This book is great for Physios trying to set a clinical foundation utilizing Neurodynamics to treat patients, and even more importantly, for those Physios that have been frustrated in trying to use Neuorodynamic techniques in the past but found themselves making their patients worse.

This book is also great as it includes a DVD of Real-Time Ultrasound images of nerve assessment and glides. Its great for learning, as well as can be used to show patients, as an educational tool to demonstrate the importance of what we can offer in treating neural tissue dysfunctions.

I highly would recommend this book to PTs out there.

Review Date: 2007-12-31
I've owned a copy of this book for 30 years and still refer to it. There's nothing the least bit fancy about it -- it's a "bulletin" of the New Jersey extension service, printed in black and white with a plastic comb binding. It covers about 100 of the trees you're most likely to find in NJ forests. Each tree gets two pages: one page with precise line drawings of the leaf, fruit, and twig, and one page with a no-nonsense description of where the tree typically grows, how to identify it, what it has been used for, etc. In terms of production values, it can't hold a candle to more recent tree books, but in terms of usefulness in making IDs and building your "tree vocabulary," it's hard to beat.
