Transitions Abroad magazine has seemingly always been the go-to resource for students, volunteers, and working travelers itching to get up and go. This book is a great resource for doing so in an informed and successful manner. No organization does a better job at compiling the best resources and they've tapped several experts from their stable of writers to give the low-down on specific areas.

While English teachers may require a more focused guide, the book does provide a good overview and plenty of relevant web sites to explore for more information in that area. For anyone wishing to travel and make a living at the same time, the purchase of this book is money very well spent. After all, if you land a job after using the guide, it'll pay for itself on day one.

Thanks to this book and despite me having no teaching experience or certification, I found a job within a week. This book is concise and contains many links to websites I could not find on my own. The job I received is in Mexico and they are paying for my plane tickets and rent when I get there, along with a nice salary. I am very pleased. If you want a job then I would suggest you look here first.

Practical Job Search Methodology
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-13
This is not a theoretical book, which can be quite important to the job-seeker who isn't looking for a theoretical job! This is a very practical book born out of Davies' alarming job search realization that, after 18 years of running a company, he was 287th in line for the CEO job he wanted!

He realized he needed to dramatically change his job search approach and this book documents the detailed and pragmatic process he created to land the right job.

Davies covers a lot of useful ground -- business cards, executive biographies, getting over the 2nd call hurdle, the targeted number of calls / emails a week, how to use a database to track a job search, how to leverage online networks and how many new people to meet to get the perfect job - and does it with good examples, wizards, pictures etc.

I am currently in the middle of a job search where I've employed the author's methodology with good success. It has led me to 80 new relevant contacts, 50 of whom I've now met, spoken, or emailed with. It has also led to meetings with eight CEOs for the VP-level job I am targeting.

I was curious if Davies himself would help me in my job search. I didn't know him but he works in my industry and we had a common contact who recommended his book to me in the first place. I called him up (he was my 66th new contact) and used the techniques he outlines in his book to explore how we could help each other. He introduced me to several very helpful folks, including the co-founder of a company I am targeting.

It doesn't get much more practical than that! Highly recommended.

The Business Book You'll Read Again

It's difficult to advance the eloquent and thoughtful reviews provided below. But, I'd like to add my recommendation for "The $100,000+ Career".

Unlike most business books, it's a quick, entertaining read. John has a gift for driving complex ideas into simple, easy to understand prose. If you're looking for an elaborate expose on business networking, this book is not for you. If, however, you're looking to advance your career in a positive way, apply basic networking techniques to all facets of your life, and enjoy yourself in the process, you've come to the right place.

I have been a successful professional for 20 years. Networking has been, and continues to be, a key component of that success. In fact, effective networking kept me employed over the last 10 years. I never used a resume. Once, I had to rush to put a resume together the night before I met executives just so HR could attach it to my file. When I was on the market, people called me.

Enter John Davies. Surely, a seasoned professional like me doesn't need another book telling me what I already know?! Not true. I work in a high-turnover environment. I recently discovered my small network of business professionals wasn't enough. It literally dried up of all opportunities. No one had a position available, and everyone I knew was aware of the same jobs. Obviously, painfully, for the first time in many years, I needed to expand my network.

I've practiced many of John's fundamental techniques over the years. But, I rarely organized my networking activities in a meaningful, consistent way. His methodology reinforced my previous behavior and offered new approaches to my current "transition".

The genius of John's book is in its application beyond the job search. His common sense approach can be used in all aspects of your professional and personal life.

I have personally recommended "The $100,000+ Career" to several people. I already know it is destined to become the first business book I re-read. Whether you're just starting a job search or are an experienced, employed networker, I suspect this book will also become the one you reference again and again.

An enjoyable read with a fresh perspective .

I enjoyed this a lot and found that many of John's ideas are applicable for all , not only executives in transition . A wonderful "gift" book for those who are stuck and in need of some inspiration .

The $100,000+ Career is good reading, period. I started the book with connotations of this being a business book, but I ended knowing this is a book about people. By humanizing the frigid concept of networking, John Davies shows how getting the job we want, or conceiving of that job in the first place, is achievable. His current job, as highlighted in the book, is proof that his ideas work.

The book bridges the gap between old-fashioned communication (you know, talking to people) and how we communicate now: sending and receiving to the world, but in isolation. With thoughtful advice and engaging anecdotes, Davies offers practical steps for how to be introduced to 100 new people, the "Law of 100" that he says can get anyone the job she wants. The trick is not in meeting 100 anybodies, but knowing how to meet the right people to help you on your job search. In this book, he shows the way.

Davies clearly embraces his own advice, using his job search experience to show the Law of 100 in action. The book extends into of social networking, being marketable without being a commodity, practical tools for organizing these efforts, co-conspirators, terrible caddies, and even a phone call to Bob Marley. It's an unusual and exciting read.

Finally, any book that begins with a quote from John Waters has to be, at the very least, interesting. Anyone, not just businesspeople, will take a lot from this book. Personally, I enjoyed the advice for how to take control of my career. More valuable that that, I also learned that networking isn't about using people to get jobs. It's about developing relationships that improve and enrich our lives (no, seriously!)

Surprising Twists On The Well-Worn Subject of Finding The Job You Really Want Through Networking

Review Date: 2006-04-12
I like a book that takes an idea that I may think I may know well, like networking, and gives it some surprising twists that, in the end, has me thinking differently about that subject. John Davies' book is like that. What do I mean?

We all network to some extent. But, one of Davies' points, in your search for a new job, is that networking isn't just about establishing a new contact. It's about establishing a trusting relationship with someone new, who can then introduce you to someone who may, in the end, offer you a job. Instead of a cold call then, your contact creates an instant credibility with the person you want to speak to.

In fact, he isn't speaking of one introduction, but of setting a goal where you end up with 100 introductions, which he calls the "Rule Of 100." Why 100? Because, like with direct marketing where the response rate is in the range of 1 to 3%, going after 100 introductions significantly raises the likelihood of successfully ending up with a new job.

This is just one of the twists in Davies' book that had me re-examining how I think about and what I do when I network.

One suggestion I would make to supplement Davies' book has to do with the awkwardness of meeting new people. I don't know about you, but, oftentimes, I am at a loss as to what to say. To help, I found the book "The Fine Art of Small Talk" by Debra Fine useful.

While the title indicates it was written for stay-at-home moms and dads, almost everyone can benefit from this book. Heather Shepherd designed a book for individuals who wish to supplement their income, while caring for small children and working from a home office. Shepherd spends considerable time focused on the self-evaluation aspect of starting a business. Here, she presents self-evaluation guides, checklists and advice if your skills are weak.

Shepherd supplies charts and questions to ensure individuals choose the correct home-based business. The actual business suggestions are divided into two categories based on start-up costs: $0-$100 and $500-$1,000. Within each business idea, Shepherd provides a brief overview of the business, projected money needed to start the business, business equipment needed, education/skills required, where to find clientele and a starting point. She also offers a "learn more" section for each business. In this section, she gives the reader websites, books organizations and groups that may be helpful when starting this business.

Readers are presented with a complete look at a sample business plan and a step-by-step guide to writing their own. Shepherd provides readers with several case studies of successful individuals who have started and maintained their own home-based businesses. The information supplied in this book can serve anyone wishing to start their own business as a useful reference guide.

101 Businesses You Can Start With Less Than One Thousand Dollars: For Stay-at-Home Moms & Dads by Heather Shepard is a great resource for anyone that is thinking about starting an at home business. The benefits of an at home business are growing larger every day and this book shows how one can make a success out of working at home.

The way Ms. Shepard organizes the book makes it very easy to follow and utilize. She takes the reader systematically through the processes of selecting a business, setting up a home office, making a business plan, finance options and advertising. I found the chapter on self-evaluation to be a valuable tool. In this chapter, Ms. Shepard has the reader ask themselves the hard questions to determine if they are truly ready to start their own business and to find out what direction would be the best to take. This aspect of the book shows that it is not a scheme to become a millionaire overnight. Instead, this publication is a serious guidebook shows the reader their strengths and weaknesses. In turn, the book provides the reader with resources to strengthen their skills if they need to.

I feel that this book is not just a guide to starting a business, but also one that is a reference in order to keep a home based business on track. Finally there is a book that gives the aspiring entrepreneur helpful and practical advice in plain straightforward language.

This book will help just about anyone

This book is marketed toward stay-at-home parents, but it useful for just about anyone over the age of 18. The best way to protect yourself from a recession is to have a bank of skills you can fall back on, and 101 Businesses You Can Start With Less Than $1,000 should give every reader at least five ideas for making extra money.

The best thing about 101 Businesses is its comprehensive look at how to succeed in each job. I never knew how to become a voice-over actor, but now I do. I know what equipment I need, who my potential clients are, and how to get started. Every business listed in Shepherd's book has a list of websites and how-to books to help you get off the ground. I was also surprised to learn how many of these businesses require less than $100 to get started.

I also appreciated the clear-eyed approach Shepherd takes in telling readers that these businesses require a lot of research and effort before they become profitable. This is the opposite of a "get rich quick" book. It's more of a "get to work, get happy and maybe get rich" book.

I liked this book quite a bit because it gave a lot of great information and was true to its title; there really were 101 business listed within the book that are suitable for people who want their own business while raising small children. I think this is a great book for someone who knows that they want to start a business, but just don't know what to do or how to get started. I particularly liked all the links to professional organizations for all the various careers, and the interviews with business owners were really interesting.

Practical ideas & planning for home business.

Review Date: 2008-02-06
This book has lots of practical, current ideas that could be started for much less than one thousand dollars. The 101 ideas are really well laid out and have links and recommended books so you can find out more. Each idea has specific ideas for how to get started and links to books and organizations for more information. It does not just give you can idea, but it shows you how to get started straight away. The case studies of successful home business owners showed how others have succeeded. The home business owners talk about how they did it and what problems they faced.

What I found most helpful were the sections on business selection and planning. There are simple checklists and questions to find out what type of business you are most suited to and likely to be successful at. It would be really helpful for someone feeling unsure about what type of home business would be best for them.

The business planning section shows that a home business can be much more than just earning a few extra dollars, it can be a viable, long term income if you plan for it. Writing a business plan for a home business is really simplified with the checklists. This was really worth doing and made me think about the future possibilities of my home business.

As an HR professional, I've read a lot of resumes and over the years I've written them for myself as well. I have found that the use of "buzz" words and how these resumes are written catches the recruiters attention much better the the average resume. This is probably the 10th copy of this book I have purchased. I give them out to those looking for jobs and there are several copies in my professional library. This book not only tells you how to write an effective resume but gives you samples of buzz words and phrases. An excellent reference book.

WORD-UP!

Having recently purchased 16 books on the subject and a professional in the field, I suggest you'll be in deep trouble if one of your competitors reads this book before you.

It is, at once, the supreme effort on the market.

Best you read it FIRST and learn what makes a "rez-u-may" SELL. (You'll also learn to love "Peanut Butter Sandwiches".)

For those intensely serious about a great resume, I suggest two additional five-star books:

1. "Gallery of Best Resumes" by David Noble. Terrific examples of excellent layout and design.

2. "Resumes for Dummies" by Joyce Kennedy. All around good advice.

Follow the suggestions in these three books and you'll consistently write a winning resume.

Remember, "WORDS" can change your life.

Don't think so? Here are some that will: "Watch Out!", "Call 911!", "Earthquake!", "Guess What.", "I Want Volunteers.", "We're Downsizing.", and "I Do."

Still don't think so? Unless you're brain-dead, THESE WORDS will:

"Here's Your Pink Slip." "Where's My Parachute?" "I Need A Job." "What time can you come in for an interview?", and

"YOU'RE HIRED!"

When you hear the above, it's a right proper time to suddenly "Go Forth And Put Asunder".

Brandish & Vanquish with your secret weapon known as "My Killer Resume".

All competitors shall Be Afraid!

As a divorce attorney, I frequently encounter clients (generally women) who must reenter the work force or find better-paying jobs. At this time in their lives, they have low self-esteem and no idea where or how to start; therefore, I am constantly on the lookout for something that will assist them far more than the few months of rehabilitative alimony I might be able to wring out of their former spouses. Since coming across this book, I have recommended it to many clients. Ms. Hill's approach gives them confidence, direction, and the power to take control of their lives.

What a great guide to taking control of the interview in a positive way - when and how to.

How to pick up on key phrases indicating where you stand in the process and how to move yourself from candidate to employee without offending or coming across too aggressive.

Excellent book on when and how to be assertive in a hiring situation where most feel like a helpless victum or rag doll without any control of the process.

More importantly - exactly what to say to get the interviewer on your side and a call to action on your behalf.

WHAT AN EASY BOOK TO READ!

Interviewing is one of the most stressful things a person can do. I have been out of the workforce for 3 years. My children are grown and I decided to go back into the field of Administrative Secretary or Executive Assistant. Something I have always enjoyed and never got bored. Just being off the market for only 3 years, there were so many things that had changed about interviewing and I was extremely nervous about this. Of course all this information was coming from my family and friends. I know they all meant well, but I needed an expert. While searching on Amazon, I came across the book by Tony Beshara, "Acing the Interview." After reading this book, I have never felt the confidence in myself that I feel right now about going on a professional interview. I didn't even feel this relaxed 10 years ago. Tony Beshara's book is absolutely easy reading, down to earth and straight to the core of what you need to know about interviewing. I would recommend this book to anyone that is struggling with the thought of going on an interview, whether you have been out of work awhile or just ready for a change.

Sincerely,

Judy Turner

The title Acing the Interview doesn't really describe the breadth of knowledge Tony Beshara communicates in his latest book. If one does not venture to the Table of Contents, the book's cover tagline stating its inclusion of "450 Sample Questions" sounds very much like a dozen other self-help books for job seekers. But make no mistake, Tony is not pandering to the insecurities of those suffering from interview phobia with a warmed over collection of typical interview questions. As in his first book, "The Job Search Solution," Tony wants you to look inside yourself, and to question the common precepts about the job search process. Tony's "questions" include those you ask yourself and those you ask the employer, in addition to the questions asked of you in the interview.

Tony leverages his experience from interviewing more than 24,000 candidates in a 30-year career to make you understand that `acing the interview' is more about the research, planning, and practice you execute before the interview than it is about regurgitating rote answers in the interview.

Acing the Interview is a very strong sophomore performance from the acknowledged King of Recruiters. Those who viewed any of Tony's appearances on the Dr. Phil Show will recognize his conversational tone and sincere passionate concern for matching employers to employees. Not many recruiters can claim more than 6,700 placements in their career. Unlike most authors in this genre, who have very little, if any, real world experience in getting a job - Tony has done it, and is still doing it, every day.

While reporting as a social scientist, Dr. Schofield most importantly shares his own life long journey and his courage to live at life's edges. This authentic voice permeates this work and one feels that one has a wise companion for the road ahead. George Schofield has provided an easy to follow pathway for each of us to determine our "readiness" for life after 50 and beyond. For many of us whose "eye on the ball" was so intense that we failed to notice that the magic line of middle-age had come and gone, Mr. Schofield provides us with tools to reassess ourselves and our lives while "in transit." As one who has long crossed that line, the advise I've provided others in preparation for the later stages of life is "expect to be surprised." No one can anticipate all of the financial, social and personal changes which arrive with aging (including the welcome as well as the unwelcome). "After 50 It's Up to Us" provides tools for each of us to develop the flexibility often required to effectively respond to the arrival of the unexpected. I highly recommend this book.

Somehow I always thought I would stay young, but suddenly 50 is looming on the horizon! George Schofield wisely and in a very readable format lays it out for us: now that we are here, what do we need to do to take care of ourselves, our families and the rest of our lives.?

Schofield is smart, practical and gave me a lot of think about. I would reccomend this book to all those babyboomers who never trusted anyone over 30, and are now in our 40's 50's and 60's! Yipes! How did this happen? Thanks! I'm buying it as gifts to give to my friends.

I really liked this book. There aren't too many internships guides out there -- but this one's pretty neat. It gives the scoop on internships like Microsoft, Letterman, Intel, Nightline, etc. It's detailed and sassy -- not just a generic listing.

I used this book as my crutch all through college -- it got me 3 out of my 4 internships. It's the best internship book out there.

Having spent some time doing undergrad recruiting work at 2 different companies, I can honestly say that there's no internship book out there that really prepares you better than talking to alumni of your school who are now working at your ideal company. Nonetheless, for the student who has little starting knowledge of internships, this is probably the best overall book.

Excellent guide.

This guide is outstanding. For inside looks at the employers themselves, I'd also recommend the "Vault Reports" guides from VaultReports.com.

This is an incredible and useful guide if you are looking to explore what internships our out there and what you need to know to get into them. I was suprised the book covered so many different fields from MTV to The United Nations. Each listing is really clear and easy to understand. It lays out the facts and not the writers opinions. You also get to hear from other people who have compleated a interships and thier thoughts about how useful it was. I would not only recomend this book to college students, but to high school students as well. A job well done!

Sylvia Landy has created a book specifically for the recent college graduate looking for their first job. Through several businesses, Landy has always hired recent college graduates, mostly as a cost savings measure. She knows what she is talking about, and wants to provide her experiences, and those of others, to assist college graduates with the tools needed to successfully land a job. Not only does she provide the standard resume writing tips, but she also shows the reader how to answer the predictable and not-so predictable interview questions. Things that you may think are common sense, like don't go out to a party the night before an interview, clean up your Facebook and MySpace pages, and record new voice mail greetings, are included. Throughout the book she throws some humorous, and not so funny, anecdotes, that will add to her points. She also addresses those readers who did not graduate with stellar grades or many activities.

There are many books that will help with resume writing, interviewing, and job searching. This book ties it all together for the recent college graduate in a well written and very worthwhile book. Now that you have graduated, you are competing with over a million graduates. You need an "edge," and this book delivers it. I was impressed at the breadth of the topics that Landy covered, not only how to write a letter in advance of your interview, but also how to handle illegal questions (age, sexual preference, religious affiliations), videoconference interviews, what and how to order if you are meeting someone over lunch, and more. Whether you are competing for an internship or full-time employment, this book will provide you the tools necessary to stand out in the crowd and land that job.

My only problem with this book is that it wasn't available when I graduated. :-)

The Quintessential Interview Handbook

If you think that finding a job is comprised of simply submitting a crudely drafted resume on a company's website, you're solely mistaken. Ditch the Flip Flops is the handbook for any recent college graduate who wants to land his or her dream job. Ditch answers all the question a reader could ask about the interview process. It covers everything from how to prepare for the interview, how to answer questions and how to leave a lasting impression even after the interview is over.

I had some reservations about reading a 300 page book pertaining to the interview process, but Landy's wit and humor kept me entertained from start to finish. Passages like, "Speaking of oily ... this is not the way to get noticed in your interview" still make me laugh when I skim through the pages before I have an interview. Ditch is not only the quintessential interview handbook, but it is also an enjoyable read.

Very detailed as it covers every single step!

Based on the title, I was first attracted to this book as a possible graduation gift. I didn't really see anything else out there with job interviewing fundamentals for twentysomethings. As graduation gifts, I bought a few copies and before wrapping them up, I decided to read one myself. I was really impressed.

I can see how Ditch the Flip-Flops was sorely needed for both internship and full-time employment interview tips. It's definitely geared toward college students and their unique situation in meeting recruiters for the first time. The Q & A section is right on the mark, as are the chapters outlining wardrobe malfunctions as well as interview follow-up strategies, and the management of both phone and in-person meetings (on campus, in the corporate office and other locations).

I think the material is definitely written in a straightforward manner that appeals to college students. While every reader won't tackle Ditch the Flip-Flops cover to cover it's a great resource that can be easily accessed on a chapter by chapter basis.

I continue to give this book as a graduation present because I'm always thanked for it!

A Great Resource for Post-Graduate Success!

Since graduating from college in May and immediately enlisting in a full-scale job hunt, I can only now fully understand the difficulty of separating yourself from the flood of other recent graduates clamoring for post-college employment. The importance lies not only in "selling yourself", but also in determining the qualities you possess which will set you apart as a unique candidate for a desired position. Ditch the Flip-Flops acknowledges this importance and effectively guides readers into determining what positive attributes they have to offer future employers.

The book goes above and beyond your typical interview handbook by dealing with the smaller yet equally important details frequently overlooked by most authors. From specific wardrobe advice, to the pre-interview morning routine, and even to what your body language reveals about you, Ditch the Flip-Flops leaves no stone unturned and acknowledges the seemingly insignificant, yet sometimes crucial particulars that often slip readers' minds in preparing for job interviews.

Author Sylvia Landy takes what could have become a dull, lackluster how-to manual and infuses it with humor and encouragement. While the book's advice is straightforward and practical, Landy provides effective, amusing (and sometimes slightly horrifying) anecdotes to illustrate her points. Readers can approach the job industry with boosted confidence as the book equips them with the tools and attitude necessary to come across as informed, qualified job candidates. The book covers every step of the job-search process from beginning to end; not simply the interview itself, but finding a job opening, building a resume, and even weighing post-interview job offers.

I have no doubt that customers who purchase Landy's book will profit from its advice and gain a new-found confidence in their abilities not only to attain jobs, but to succeed in any future career pursuits.

Stands the Test of Time

I first read Mr. Meyer's book in the early 90s and was touched and amused by it. As the decade progressed, so did the number of layoffs I also encountered, and I never went through a layoff without thinking of his story. I can't tell you how many people I have referred to this book, and that's why I'm on this web site today - to send a link to yet another middle-aged worker who is feeling "Down and Out in Corporate America."

It's a must-read for anyone who has been laid off and anyone who works in Human Resources. It stands the test of time!

Meyer pens brilliant memoir about being an unemployed exec.

G. J. (Jerry) Meyer writes an outstanding memoir reagarding his experience seeking work in the modern America of right-sizing and layoffs. Mr. Meyer writes honest and straight-forward prose about corporate life and the tough job market faced by the increasing numbers of people as production gets more efficient and automated. I read this book right after reading Jeremy Rifken's 'The End of Work' (which discusses WHY so many people are un- or under-employed), there should be a Surgeon General's warning about doing this, the experience is nearly too intense. One can only hope that Mr. Meyer gets screwed in some other manner, so that he'll be motivated to write more. Truly an excellent book by a very skilled and compelling writer

I so enjoyed this book I devoured it in one sitting -- which surprised even me. I have not a thing in common with the author: I am not male, I'm nowhere near 50, I have never been a senior executive and I've never been fired. In fact, I'm a stay-at-home mother. But Meyer writes well. And if you've ever had to look for a job under any circumstances, you'll identify. Don't believe the reviewers who call Meyer bitter -- he's not, he's just very, very specific about the details of his humiliation. His book does raise real questions about employers today, but more to the point, it's a good read.

Even if you are securely employed or living off a comfortable trust fund, this book is a superb read, painfully funny, sharp-witted, well written. Though I had never much sympathy for six- figure executives, Meyer's take on that world still engaged me to read the book in one sitting

A painfully frank story of the corporate chicken coop
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-31
The corporate life is much like a chicken coop: the few chickens on the top of pecking order have friends and a full access to the feeder. Once a chicken slides down the pecking order, it is unlikely to regain its spot. At least, not at the age of 50 and not without strong connections.
Jerry Meyer, an ex-senior executive at MacDonnell-Douglas, wrote a painfully frank story of a corporate chicken, who made it to the top of pecking order without connections or old money, and fell back to the bottom.
It is a must-read for every executive wannabe. Maybe, the reader will think of Meyer's message and reconsider the career strategy: it is safer to be paid for what you DO than for what you ARE. A title is no substitute for skill, creativity and, most important, sense of self-worth.
