I happen to be part of one of the families discussed in this book. I found it to be quite nice. I wasn't mentioned in the book but my mother, grandma, granpa etc. was. I think Geta did a fabulous job in making this book a success! It took a lot of time to archive this information about my family, and through this book, I am able to know where my ancestors came from and pass the book on to my children in the years to come. thank You.

Sincerely, Sommer Hayes

Short on plot, but long on ideas

Pompey Casmilus is a secretary living in London in the 1930's. In this book, she describes her thoughts about love, work, friendship and the Germans, amongst other things. If you're looking for a plot this isn't the book for you, but if you want emotional honesty and a startlingly original (and up to date) viewpoint, then go ahead and read it. Don't let the book's surreal style put you off - there's plenty of thought-provoking material in there.

The best reference tool on the market

If you are searching for a job or job options you owe it to yourself to invest in this book. In my book, "How to find your dream job and make it a reality: solutions for a rewarding and meaningful career." I reference previous editions of this book.

In addition, most authors on the subject of job hunting and career use this information. The only problem is these references are not very comprehensive. If you want comprehensive information on the job out look this book is for. If you want to find your dream job invest in my book, "How to find your dream job and make it reality: solutions for a rewarding and meaningful career."

Good luck in your job search.

Thought-Provoking, Timely, Academic
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-28
In the latter half of the 1990s, we witnessed a number of substantial shifts in employment. Workers changed jobs every 2-4 years, on average. Employers weren't any more loyal to their employees either. The relationship between employer and employee was dramatically different than what we had experienced for generations. Attitudes were changing; behavior around employment changed along with the attitudes.

These highly significant changes were observed, studied, scrutinized, discussed, and mourned in corporate offices, think tanks, and college campuses across the land. Twenty-two of the folks concerned with the changes and their implications wrote essays expressing their concerns. David Neumark, professor of economics and Michigan State University and research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research wove the essays together into this thought-provoking volume.

The fact that fourteen of the authors are professors or researchers should tell you something about the content. Those who are not affiliated with a college, university, or research organization are executives with organizations involved in the field as consultants. The book understandably has a strong academic flavor, clear evidence of the research-and-publish culture still prevalent in the academic world. This orientation brings a considerable depth to each of the essays, duly noted in graphs, charts, and footnotes.

The book is organized into three sections: Job Stability, Job Security, and Understanding Behavioral Changes. Chapters include such titles as Is Job Stability in the United States Falling?, Trends in Job Instability and Wages for Young Adult Men, and Has Job Stability Vanished in Large Corporations? More can be found in chapters titled Declining Job Security, Long-Run Trends in Part-Time and Temporary Employment, and The Implications of Flexible Staffing Arrangements for Job Stability.

While this certainly isn't bedside reading for most of us, for serious human resource professionals, social scientists, workforce strategists, and other professors, it's great. Good contribution to the literature, but won't be a best-seller.

Dealing with Disputes in Cyberspace
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-05-06
With this work, Colin Rule, who is one of the pioneers of ODR, and also an excellent writer, has given us much to consider about dispute resolution in cyberspace. The book is written for "managers, employees, union representatives, and others who are looking for a better way to handle conflict in their businesses and organizations." There is a interesting overview of the development of online dispute resolution. Also the author discusses his personal experiences in the field, which adds to the overall credibility of the book.

ODR originated in online disputes for which traditional means of dispute resolution were not suited. With as many as 500 million plus people online worldwide, as more businesses and individuals come to realise this significant point, ODR will flourish.

Challenges arising from ODR are covered in sufficient detail by the author and not only alert us to the issues, but also to suggest realistic ways of dealing with them. The author believes that businesses will come to use ODR as matter of course. His book makes a persuasive case for such an outcome.

This is a practical work on an important aspect of ADR.

Finally, a manual about OR-OSHA inspections I can use.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-09
This manual is right on target. It is succinct, easy to understand and provides in-depth guidance concerning the OR-OSHA inspection process and the employer's response if it is cited. This information is absolutely critical for safety and human resource professionals needing to adequately represent their employers during the inspection and at the informal conference with OR-OSHA. Every worker needs the right tool for the job. This is the right tool when faced with an OR-OSHA inspection.
