I found Mildred Rein's book in a proof edition in the tomes of a County Library when voraciously reading everything I could find on welfare reform. I am a neighborhood-based services practitioner and state-level welfare advocate, so I need real answers. Rein provides an in-depth analysis of decades of attempts to apply work relief and work incentive strategies to solve the welfare "problem." She proves NONE of them have worked. There is nothing being attempted through the 1996 welfare bill which has not already been tried and failed dismally. She analyzes social services strategies, work incentive strategies, and work requirements. She provides the best analysis to date of underground work patterns among welfare recipients, through study over time. Nearly all want to work, DO work on and off, but fall victim to low wages which don't provide a living. She concludes that the only workable strategy is to apply intensive supportive services to a "selec! table, job-ready group" among recipients, and give up on work strategies for the most vulnerable and least job-ready. Somebody needs to publish this book in a form more accessible to policy makers, and get it out there.

I can certainly say in this particular case "It's about time!!!!" The passage of and enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) coincided with the pervasive use of computers in all areas of society. Since 1990, the proliferation of legal mandates, lawsuits for and on behalf of the disabled, changes in educational inclusion programs, accessibility to technology, etc. has made it nearly impossible for one person to find all the pertinent information. Mr. Thomas Barich and DND Press have finally compiled in one CD, most of the documents and information currently available concerning disability rights, access, and law. This phenomenal resource is an essential tool for all those interested in this topic in the United States. Barich has provided a means to access this information without needing to resort to browsing the Internet, or flipping from site to site merely to find specific wording of government documents, find current legal rulings, or look for the status of particular disabilities in regards to educational access.

This CD contains all the information needed for parents, educators, social workers, lawyers, and others who come into contact with those with disabilities. It provides up-to-date information concerning building access requirements and provisions for acoustics in classrooms for deaf students, visual access to assistive technology, and much more. The CD even provides sample cost estimates for hardware as required by law. It also provides indexes and information on individual topics such as Albinism, Asperger's Syndrome, deafness, genetics, and more, with means of connecting to organizations and journals dealing with each individual subject online. There are over 2,500 links to sites dealing with the diverse disabilities, and that makes this CD by far the most comprehensive resource available.

As anyone who has done research on disabilities online knows, the information available out there is staggering in sheer number. Often, it is difficult to find pertinent information, especially about little known disabilities or on subjects that are rarely written about in the media, such as museum access. Barich does a wonderful job incorporating this information in such a manner, as to make it readily available. The CD is very easy to use, and provides means to go backwards and forwards. It also utilizes current technology to search and locate, as well as a comprehensive index, glossary with current definitions (they change according to the political climate and political correctness). Specific words looked for are backlit in the documents, making it easier to tell if particular documents are relevant to the searcher's needs.

This CD is an evolving work of progress. As more information comes available, more legal mandates are ruled upon by the Supreme Court, more changes are implemented in schools and buildings, this CD will also continue to change. Even so, the CD is much easier to deal with and carry around than the currently available books. I highly recommend this CD not just to the usual suspects as listed in the book description, but also to parent-advocates, organizations for the disabled, college students and other educators doing research, social workers, individuals with disabilities, etc. in order to protect their rights and the rights of their children. This is a truly wonderful and comprehensive resource.

Cobble has written an invaluable history book about a large segment of the twentieth century workforce that would have otherwise been overlooked and forgotten. Waitresses have been ubiquitious and invisible at the same time. This book speaks to gender, class, ethnic, and work issues. It is written in a style that is informative AND interesting throughout. The historical research and organization of the book is superb. If you didn't know you were interested in this topic, the minute you start reading Cobble's book you will find out otherwise.

Wow! A definite read. This article is a very valuable and inquisitive look at new initiatives in Journalism. I recommend this reading for any up-and-coming or seasoned person interested in writing, Journalism, and education.

Bruce Nelson, a Dartmouth history professor has the seanachi (Irish story teller) gene. The story is of the role played by racial/ethnic identity in the working class. It comences in the nonunion era and comes up to almost the present time. It is told in significant detail, looking at many unions and zeroing in on the longshore unions and Steelworkers. It demonstrates the fludity and yet persistent influence of racial/ethnic identities, Irish identity having been most transformed and the "white" perception of African Americans being the most unchanged. Nelson laments the failure of working class identity to have trumped racial/ethnic identity. He does not address the rightness/wrongness of Affirmative Action today, but his story schould give substantial pause to any belief that ethnocentrism has suddenly ceased to exist.

The publisher's description is very accurate. This is the best study ever conducted on the impact of job training for the disadvantaged. Basically, study finds very modest successes for certain groups of adults, women in particular, but does not show general success. To put it mildly, most government job training programs are abysmal failures, hiding behind meaningless statistics (with no control groups for comparison, and methods of data collection that overstate success). This study actually provides a randomly assigned control group for comparison!

By now, 2003, the study is quite dated. JTPA is a dead program, but its successor is still living. Despite the hype, the Workforce Investment Act is not much different in terms of the actual services being delivered (and by many of the same providers or individuals). The main difference between then and now is the process for participant selection, some degree of integration and/or co-location of services, and the methods of paying for support services. Unfortunately, for mainly political reasons, the WIA program will probably not be subjected to the same level of rigorous scrutiny as found in this book. This study is an outstanding example of how a program evaluation should be done. For that reason alone, it should be standard reading for practioners in workforce development and in program evaluation.

As the performance analyst assigned to the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) at the Legislative Budget Board in Austin, I found this book to be a superb reference and guide to the program and its performance. When I became TWC's first director of planning, I ordered it for the agency library. It is a tragedy that few practitioners have read it, much less addressed its findings.

I would recommend this book to *anyone* writing or revising a resume...if only it were in print! Ed Good is unfailingly easy to read, and he makes his points clearly and often humorously. This book covers topics from graphic layout to syntax to paper selection, all with the goal of helping the reader create a resume that will catch an employer's eye and secure the reader an interview. Personally, I found it an ego boost to look objectively at my past experiences and think about ways to "advertise" them. I ended up with a resume that immeasurably outshined the one I started with, but also with a much better sense of what specific strengths I could offer an employer. Regardless of how sure you already are that you know what you're doing, this book can surely teach you a few things about writing your resume.
