This book has the most up-to-date list of entertainment locales in the ancient fun city, Pompeii. The study also has a fascinating study of Roman family and marriage laws, exciting information about the history of women in business.

The fourth title in the scholastically outstanding "Marco Polo Monographs" series, Roman Hospitality: The Professional Women Of Pompeii by John DeFelice, is an informed and informative historical study of the sex trade in ancient Pompeii. From excavated brothels, to the subtle nuances of marriage in the eyes of the law vs. informal marriages among slaves, Roman Hospitality studies sex and sexuality in a very evenhanded manner, thoroughly documenting its hypotheses, and offering a very thorough bibliography. An essential addition to academic reference collections and reading lists, Roman Hospitality is a seminal and extremely important contribution to the study of Roman culture and history.

A well written book on a neglected subject

This is a very thorough and well researched book pertaining to women (and girls) in the labor force. I've been impressed by the detail that the author brings to the topic. Combined with the numerous black and white photos, I found myself becoming immersed in this topic I knew little about. I gained a deeper appreciation of the powerful cultural forces shapping our nation and women's contributions during this time. Carrie Brown makes the reading more enjoyable than most historians I have read. She has a wonderful way with words.

The women were crucial in the American wartime economy

In Rosie's Mom: Forgotten Women Workers Of The First World War by cultural historian and freelance curator Carrie Brown recovers the nearly forgotten contribution made by women in the American workforce during the years of World War I. They helped assemble the biplanes, shaped and filled the cartridges, made the gas masks, and worked in the factories to supply America's war production needs. The women were crucial elements in the American wartime economy and efforts, trained in technical fields and working in hazardous industries (where their presence helped significantly in the adoption of new worker health and safety measures), their presence and experience were also critically important to buttress the Women's Suffrage movement and the eventual passage of an amendment to the American constitution providing women the right to vote. An informed and informative text is very nicely illustrated with historical photographs, making Rosie's Mom a welcome and seminal contribution to 20th Century American History and Women's Studies reference collections and reading lists.

From the moment I started to read this book, I was 'smacked in the face' by the relevence of this book in my life at this "exact juncture" !.

I have just lost a job that I "loved", it was my "home away from home" (I actually used to say that...); my boss was my "best friend", I would do virtually ANYTHING to support and help him in the work place and in his failing personal life. I was terminated because his wife felt we were "too close" after two years of blind loyalty. Terminated ! No notice ! No severance ! Lost my job, my best friend, my source of income, my entire world/life.

READ THIS BOOK IF YOU ARE AN ADULT CHILD !!! I wish I had read it before. I will not be the 'enabler' and the 'fall guy' the next time.

I highly recommend this book to anyone that is an ADULT CHILD and find themselves without a job/sense of self/reason to live/purpose in life because the "job" and "your life" ARE NOT intertwined unless you allow them to be. I did not establish correct "boundries", and coincidentally, my previous "boss/best-friend" is an Adult Child also.

I just ordered the book to be delivered to my previous boss/best friend. Hopefully he will learn from this book as well, and not follow the same patterns.

If you have been losing jobs despite working "very hard", and you are an ACoA, this is the book that will finally answer the big question of "why! " ACoA's, as explained succinctly yet in detail by Woititz, have ingrained patterns of behavior that result in problems on the job. We can identify these patterns, come to understand where they came from, and finally, do something to change them! This book gave me far more insight than years of counseling - Woititz truly knows the ACoA!

The book examines the psychological and social machinations behind sexual harrassment. It covers almost all situations, provides means for evaluating seriousness and suggests ways that men and women can handle themselves in these situations. As a therapist and lecturer on the subject, I find the book extremely usefull.

This is an excellent book for every working man and woman. Despite the dry title, it is easy to read and incredibly insightful. I found it useful for understanding my own behavior as well as others. I've recommended it to men and women; they all say it should be required reading at every company! As an attorney, sexual harassment trainer and author, I deeply respect Rutter's work.

The power plays underlying sexual harassment at work
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-13
Sexual harassment in the workplace may not be as easily identified as leering moves on the parts of supervisors and co-workers: it's also a power play and individuals need help to get back in control. That's why SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE is so important: it defines and outlines different forms of such harassment, tells how to prevent it and how to file an effective complaint, and how to work with a lawyer and an employer. From compiling the initial report to escalating the complaint, SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE walks you through every move. An essential guide to making the right moves and understanding the law.

How To Stop Harassment

The primary U.S. law regarding sexual conduct in the workplace, which Congress enacted in 1964, has had a profound impact on American society and business. Attorney Mary L. Boland's comprehensive handbook tells employers and employees how to define and prevent this problem and explains what to do if you are a victim. She provides the right level of detail for nonlawyers, pointing out the kinds of issues, conditions and events that can trigger a complaint. The book is readable and clearly organized, with sections that explain employer responsibilities, legal resources and remedies - from filing a lawsuit to arbitration and mediation. Four appendices and a glossary add valuable information. We highly recommend this lucid, practical book to human resource managers, executives, small business owners and employees at every level, particularly victims of sexual harassment.

Have you ever seen a new business start up and think to yourself, " Boy I wish I had thought of that!"? Well this book is the answer. It is chocked full of ideas of things you can do to start your own business. Carl T. Shepherd has so many good ideas and some of them are from his childhood, which you will get to read about along with stories about his amazing mother Ultra-Violet. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs some new ideas about starting up a business, or just anyone who likes to hear about the old days and needs a good laugh.

Making Money for Retirement

I was attracted to this book because of the funny cover. I discovered a couple of other things too. First, Mr. Shepherd has written some pretty funny stories about his family and their job hunting. I was also impressed with the number of jobs that can be started with almost no money. Not every job is for everyone for sure, but it was really helpful to be able to start thinking about what I already have that can be used to start a small business. Thank you Mr. Shepherd.

Great book. You see the world differently after reading it.

Review Date: 1998-08-04
In "Silent Witnesses," Jacqueline Ellis shows the flip-side of the Depression. Working class lives, all too often been depicted in sentimental blacks and whites, are here given a full range of expression. Rage, resentment, and even revolution become part of the equation. Through clear and often entertaining language, Ellis shows how these "negative" impulses were purposefully squelched in official government representations of working class women. To suppress the threat, the government denied its existance. I don't think I'll ever be able to look at Dorothea Lange's "Migrant Mother" the same again. This is the best kind of book -- one that makes you see the world differently after you read it.

this is the ultimate scholarly work on slave badges, a unique product of our slaveholding past. The book is thorough and easy to read. In it, you will find everything you could possibly want to know about badges and their uses.

I recommend it for Civil War buffs who want to add some marginalia to their discussions and to historical writers who want to add detail to their work. Anyone visiting historic Charleston will also find the information about fraudulent badges essential to their souvenir shopping. Plus, you may decide to bring your metal detector into the city from the beach, because that's how these valuable artifacts are usually found.

I owned this book quite a few years ago (probably first edition) and ended up loaning out my copy to a woman looking for a new job. Of course, it's so good I never got it back. Needless to say, I absolutely have to own this book again. I help friends and family with job searches and this book has been a very solid tool for me to help them, as well as help myself in my own career. Even men find this book very helpful. DO NOT PASS THIS ONE BY! This is a must-have for any woman's career arsenal!

It explains how to use volunteer work to your advantage and yes it does count for something. I would suggest this book to anyone who is, was or is going to become part of the workforce.
