Doggone good resume book!Review Date: 2008-08-20
After a career in first daily journalism and then higher education public relations I find myself in the job market again. I thought that my old resume, constructed over the years, would be fine. Boy, was I wrong.
But Dale Mayer, in "How To Write and Design a Professional Resume and Get the Job" came to the rescue. Her 287-book is chock full of everything you need to write a good, perhaps great, resume. What I found best was the series of "self-assessment" worksheets. They let me see that my resume was all over the place and that I needed to redo it to "include only what is relevant to the post" I am applying for. So I have.
And you can too. Whether you want to create a basic, targeted, creative, web or video resume this book can show you how to do it, covering the basics from cover letters to interview techniques. And the accompanying CD-ROM lets you view various resume styles that can be adapted to your particular needs

A great job hunting resourceReview Date: 2008-03-07
Even 15 years after its initial publication I would recommend this book highly. It will be missing tools that would be used today (for instance, not a word is devoted to the Internet), but there is still lots and lots of good advice to be found. Out of work? Buy this book!

"Inside Iran: Women's Lives" is best described by the author in one of the last paragraphs of her book:
"The general frustrations with everyday life here, the petty restrictions of the dress code and the restrictions on freedom of speech are tempered with the warmth and hospitality of Iranians. For me, it was a fascinating experience and a lot of fun. But for some women, not just foreigners, Iran sometimes feels like a life sentence from which they cannot escape."
Lots of charming black and white photos included.

A Word Finder that can make a difference!Review Date: 2001-10-15
As the author points out in the introduction, many employers now use a scanning system
to screen resumes. The scanning process involves the selection of certain key words. But which words?
This book can
help you include the important words and terms
Part 1 is a word finder. From ability to zealous, you will find key words,
their definitions, and a variety of synonyms. Use this part as a thesaurus to add interest to your resume. To make the point
that you are enterprising, you can also say you show initiative, are active, aggressive, ambitious, etc., all the way to venturesome.
Part
2 is a career index. I would say it, too, moves from A to Z, but in this case it's accountant to program director, radio.
Under each of these key occupations, you will find a list of words to describe skills, responsibilities, and attributes.
There is also an index of positions which relate to these key occupations.
I'm a career counselor who is enthusiastic/excited/exuberant/keen/willing to recommend this book to someone who is feeling stuck about preparing career materials.
