Great overview of Windows MCE 04'!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-03
This book helped me decide whether I really needed a MCE computer (versus a normal XP). The key was on the first page of chapter 9, quote "the TV functionality that Media Center provides is its most compelling feature".

I tried in vain to figure out how would the integrated TV tuner (NTSC) work with our TV system (Pal N). In short, I got no answers either from the forums nor "the green button" fan's website. Conversors were expensive and nobody would guarantee they would work down here.

Conclusion: I bought a DVD recorder locally, and an XP computer that is still the standard OS most people have (unlike MCE, that barely exists here).
The book is extremely user friendly, very clear, but doesn't shy away from hard topics. Part IV specially is crammed with knowledge on networks. No wonder the authors made a separate book on the subject!
The comparison of wireless LAN systems on chapter 16 comes in handy.

The explanation of "sampling" on page 34 is, again, almost "too clear" :).
Finally I understood what 24 bit and 96kHz mean! And WHY bigger numbers are, in this case, better. The comparison with the CD's sampling rate is another example of their ability to teach.

In short, the hardware recommendations may be a bit dated, their enthusiasm over this OS may sound a bit over the top after Vista, but I think this was a honest effort to explain what this OS was all about at the time it was the newest kid on the block. This book is the closest thing to actually using this OS. For their detailed walkthroughs alone, it deserves its 5 stars.

PS: The appendix on how to connect your MCE PC to different home entertainment systems is comprehensive thanks to its drawings. And the index is clearly organized in big topics, which renders it useful.

Much better than the Euro talk series, this provides a challenging introduction to Polish. I don't think it should be called intermediate (I have now completed the course with a perfect score 4 times and still feel like a beginner) but it is well worth the cost.

Succeeds in capturing the gamut of Paik's creations
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-21
Nam June Paik accompanies the first American retrospective of the Korean multi-media artist's work since 1982, bringing together the major works which define his many artistic contributions. While this was published to accompany an exhibition, it stands well on its own as a gathering of 300 illustrations and an essay, accompanying text descriptions of Paik and his works. It's a special challenge to bring multimedia works to life in print: this succeeds in capturing the gamut of Paik's creations.

The Way To Get Ahead
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-31
I had read a couple of Cohen's books before and had been impressed by his ability to educate the reader in a no-nonsense kind of way. The music business is so hard to access that anybody wanting to break into it needs help, and I needed help! I decided to give this book a whirl. I do not own a record label but have been forced to promote my own demo because of the lack of options available to me. I wanted to see just how I could develop it if I so wished.

Cohen is extremely enlightening on this topic. I had no idea what the financial side of owning a record label would be, even if it is a small one for self-promotion. I had no idea how much growth a small label could be capable of! All of the information that you need is in this pack and takes different forms so you can choose the sections you would benefit from. Some is on CD, some is in a manual and there are even various blueprints available so you are bound to take in the information. It is much more memorable than learning from a textbook! The information is easily understandable and well set out so you can find exactly what you are looking for. I couldn't put the pack down! It comes highly recommended and, trust me, you'll get through it in no time. One glance and you become hooked! If you really want your label to succeed, you need this!

Why this book is a must read
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-15
Tthought he couldn't improve on the first edition, but he has. A great introduction not only to the basic themes in the world religions but a solid introduction to their relevance to contemporary thought, including the shape of the thinking and consciousness in the arts, psychology, and natural sciences. The approach is that there are common forms and languages to all of the above, and the author speaks in a language that is easy to understand. The basic assumption is that these ways of thinking overlap in ways that recall the origins of religious traditions and make them relevant to today.

Very Useful

Review Date: 2006-11-30
This book was one of the best of its kind that I have ever seen. If you're looking for a book that explains all the cool things your iPod can do - don't buy it. This book is not about your iPod at all, it's about all the accessories that are available for your iPod.

The book is divided into seven categories:

1) iPod Models
2) Cases
3) Portable Speakers
4) Home Speakers
5) Headphones
6) Auto Accessories
7) General Accessories

Each product it shows has little icons under it, indicating which iPods the accessory is compatable with. I loved this, because I was able to quickly skip over the accessories that aren't compatible with my first generation iPod nano.

The book has great color pictures of every item it talks about, an informative yet succinct description of the product, and a price range and web address where you can purchase the product, if interested. The book includes some of the most obscure iPod accessories I have ever seen - things I didn't know existed.

If you're looking for a great, up to date book to keep you in the know about all things iPod, this is for you!
