The Internet is becoming increasingly embedded in everyday life. Drawing on an expanding array of intelligent web services and applications, a growing number of people are creating, distributing and exploiting user-created content (UCC) and being part of the wider participative web.
This study describes the rapid growth of UCC and its increasing role in worldwide communication, and draws out implications for policy. Questions addressed include: What is user-created content? What are its key drivers, its scope and different forms? What are the new value chains and business models? What are the extent and form of social, cultural and economic opportunities and impacts? What are the associated challenges? Is there a government role, and what form could it take?
What is the participative web?
The Internet is characterised by increased participation and interaction of users to communicate and express themselves. It is an Internet influenced by new intelligent web services enabling users to contribute to developing, rating, collaborating and distributing Internet content and developing and customising Internet applications, driven by an expanding broadband base and easy-to-use software to create and distribute content.
How is the participative web changing things?
The participative web is increasingly important in driving innovation in business, research and social activities. More open approaches to information creation, exchange and diffusion are also being taken up extensively in government, the education sector and other public domains. As new models for creation, distribution and use of digital content and information develop, new policy challenges for governments are emerging to provide an environment that enables and supports these developments.

Great Book for Learning All About Windows Media Player 10

This book is exactly what I was looking for. I am going to do a program in my Computer User Group on Windows Media Player 10. I am not an expert, so I needed to learn as much as I can as quickly as possible about this subject. This book is thorough and written in a way that makes this material interesting and entertaining. As Paul says in his book: "Windows XP makes its treasure-trove of functionality easy to discover, but a lot of the really dazzling stuff is still buried and unobvious." This book makes it obvious. Thank-you for writing this book.

Review,
This book provides as a good an introduction to authoring CD-based multimedia as you will find. The author, Francis Botto, is best remembered for his book "Multimedia, CD-ROM & Compact Disc" - an academic text, and not this one.
On the whole, the book provides a detailed insight into authoring CD-based multimedia, and covers UI design in the process. There really should be a second edition of this text, however, as it is a finely structured book. A great deal of thought has gone into this one, so take a look at it!

Excellent guide to managing new media projects

These are an excellent and comprehensive set of books that any professional or lecturer involved in new media project management should have as their guide to successful projects. The transfer from one book (edition 2) to the two books has meant that a lot more in-depth information has been dealt with.
Book 1 'People & Processes' takes you through the various stages in a project: client requirements, understanding clients, contracts, team selection, copyright issues, multimedia elements, interface design, testing, localization and a very good new section on 'managing small, quick projects'.
Book 2 'Technical Issues' is not just lessons in file formats and authoring, but helps project managers to understand what is involved in producing and delivering the different media elements and current key technical terms.
Most Multimedia books I have used tend to talk about project lifecycles and processes in the strictest sense but miss out the actual reality - that these are not cut and dried processes. These books explain that the new media industry is still defining a standard for project processes. This will help professionals to understand that the industry consists of people with a myriad of skills, what these involve and their working methods. By doing so it gives advice on how to manage teams with these diverse backgrounds.
As a lecturer in Multimedia I use various sources for research information and have found that these books don't just give the theoretical facts of how things should be done, but how they should realistically be done. Having also used the 2nd edition, I have found these books to be an invaluable source that I will continue to buy.

This book describes how videoconferencing is changing the world. It's really interesting, because the author shows lots of real-world uses for the technology and what works and what doesn't. The book shows how all kinds of companies in lots of different fields are implementing this communication tool. The book is the only one around that traces the history of the technology back to the late 1920's when television was invented. Also, the book is an easy read. Rosen writes really conversationally and includes lots of experiences and quotes from videoconferencing users. A must-read for anybody interested in communicating more effectively!

Teaching Children about Force and Motion

As a 6th and 7th grade teacher of science, this is a wonderful program to slide Force, Energy and Motion concepts past my students. They are positively exuberant everytime they get to play Pinball science. They must know the answers to the questions to build all items needed to escape a village and then an island and then a place in space. If they are weak on concepts there is a section to research the answer to any question. Friction, force, momentum etc. . . are all covered. We got our PTA and some teachers to help us buy 15 copies. We pair the students in class to play. Students have never loved science so much. They think "Learning is cool!".

Generally speaking, the one thing that anger's most software owners is the manual. User documentation, in many cases, is written by the same people who write the underlying code of the program. Rarely do these highly intelligent people understand what it is like to really use the product. That means, while your documentation may be technically accurate, it's organization, context, appearance and overall utility pretty much sucks. While the 1000 page manual that ships with Liquid Edition is not quite as bad as I just portrayed, I can say its utility is "less than stellar."
Now, for those of us who still like to rummage through the printed page, I am so glad to see a book that is written by a film maker (who by the way) works for Pinnacle and knows this product probably better than he knows himself.
If you are reading this review, you are most likely an (avid) user of Pinnacle Liquid Edition.. This book is an absolute must. In fact, this book should replace your official Pinnacle manual because it just makes more sense.
This book is not a tutorial, but Paul Ekert uses graphics and text to communicate almost as if he were snooping over your shoulder and giving you direct instructions on how to accomplish your task.
Kudos to Paul for writing the book. It needs to be part of your Liquid Library.

This book is well organized. It breaks down the world of vitamins with clarity so that I feel like I've actually got a little of its complexity figured out! While I can't speak to the authors' credentials (haven't checked them lately), I can say that a lot of the information is confirmed in other vitamin resources that I have. Am looking forward to the next edition!
