A very sensible approach to total health
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

I just finished reading an online version of this book at http://www.enotalone.com/article/13231.html, and it has greatly changed my outlook on health. Using a common-sense, physiological approach to address the causes of disease, the author presents methods for overcoming various afflictions -- major arthritis, high blood pressure, and even cancers, just to name a few. More importantly, though, she addresses what she believes to be the root cause of disease, a fact that many people do not want to face: unhealthy living.

She argues that standard medical professionals fail to address the true causes of disease, instead opting for prescriptions or even disfiguring surgery to remove what amounts to symptoms of other underlying problems. By treating only the symptoms, the true disease (a toxic body) only gets worse and manifests its internal imbalances in increasingly more serious ways. Part of the cause of this "toxemia" is the declining nutrition in the food that we eat on an everyday basis.

She posits that the only thing capable of healing the body is the body itself, and the best approach for overcoming nearly all ailments is giving the body the opportunity to do that. By discovering minor food allergies, imposing a more healthy diet, fasting, and colon cleansing, she puts forward methods for allowing that process to occur. One gem of advice was that of fasting: food digestion burns 30-50% of the energy in the food we eat. By fasting for even short periods of time, this energy (and the toxin-filtering efforts of the liver) can instead be used for purifying and restoring our bodies. She then points out that when we are sick, we lose our appetites for just this reason: we would be much better off to not eat at all, drink plenty of water, and rest, allowing our body the energy to fight the disease, instead of overworking our bodies by eating, fueling the disease with additional food stores, and introducing poisonous antibiotics into our system. It is against-conventional-wisdom-but-highly-sensible (after all, sick animals don't eat) advice like this that make this book really stand out.

I must say that much of the evidence is not up to "scientific snuff", but that is almost to be expected with a work like this. When the main treatment advocated for serious detoxification (and tremendous benefits of various sorts) is a long-term water fast, there is not much profit to be made in promoting or researching it. She does cite various studies throughout, appeals to common sense and history, and presents a slew of anecdotal evidence from her decades of work running Great Oaks School of Health (an alternative healing clinic, for all intents and purposes) in Oregon. She herself even survived two bouts with breast cancer without ever having a mastectomy, chemotherapy, or radiation treatment.

Most importantly, she presents a balanced, realistic view of hygienic healing and healthy living. She does not "religiously" adhere to any one technique, instead presenting the positives and negatives of various methods. She is not overly-optimistic, but truthful instead, accepting and discussing various cases that she could not help. Her descriptions of food in particular, that organic foods are not necessarily any better (in nutrition) than industrial foods, are particularly enlightening. Even while discussing more healthy ways to eat, she accepts that we will sometimes depart from an otherwise healthy diet, and even relates an instance of doing that herself. It is her down-to-earth, pragmatic, truthful, realistic, case-study-driven approach that makes this book worthwhile, and I highly suggest it to anyone.

If you still aren't convinced, at least read Chapter 2: The Nature and Cause of Disease (http://www.enotalone.com/article/13241.html). It simply makes so much sense that it's really hard to ignore, and this is true of the book in general.

I bought one these guys' other books about the Palm, and was glad to see the same format for an MP3 book. They tell you everything about burning, ripping, players, software, Web radio stations, and even legal stuff about MP3. They do these hilarious point/counterpoint arguements like they did in the Palm book -- very funny, guys! Oh and the reason I bought this book is there's stuff for bands and musicians about getting your stuff distributed on the net and making money from it. Rip the cover off, though, cuz that girl is WEIRD-LOOKING!

Strengths: The book is very readable but are a little lackluster in terms of visuals. Book simplifies tutorials but included in-depth information. This book has a nice objective oriented listing in the inside cover of the front cover page as well as a nice website resources listing on the inside of the back cover. The Chapters are well thought out and and have easy to read numbered tutorials. Good solid information for both Macintosh and PC/Windows users was well done. The index is well written. A nicely written resources listing and more are included on the inside back page.

Weaknesses: The book has only black/white text which makes the chapters a little drab. There a few screenshots and they don't have screen pointers or anything else within these to explain how to use hardware or software. The weaknesses are mainly cosmetic in terms of the sequencing of the chapters depending upon whether you are novice, intermediate or advanced user.

Introduction

A book that shows you how to shoot professional-quality videos has to demonstrate how to edit files, prepare clips for posting online, and then provide solid information about sharing video projects via blogs, websites, and podcasts. If you are looking for a book to meet these needs, then the book How to Do Everything with Online Video is a nice one to buy.

The author, Andrew Shalat is a designer, writer, author, and is the coauthor of CNET Do-It-Yourself Mac Projects.
Hands-on tutorials for the easiest and best video editing software for use on PCs and Macs are included.

This 270 page book has 12 chapters, a nice index but no glossary of terms, which would have been nice. The inside front cover has a real nice listing of 25 objectives that tell how the book can help you and what you can learn. These 12 chapters are packed with useful information. These include starting off with ; Shooting videos; editing your video; uploading your videos (including using YouTube, embedding websites, myspace, your own web pages and launching Vodcasts with iTunes); understanding and working with "tags" and using them with Google (another great part was emailing your tags through network sites) ; film school in a book; telling a story; storyboarding (very well thought out) ; information concerning directing your video; basic editing with either Adobe Premier Pro, Final Cut Express HD and/or iMovie O8 and finishing your video had good solid information.

While I have dabbled with YouTube, the book let me know more of my potential.

What I particularly liked is his information about adding audio tracks, nice converting and embedding a video to a flash video ( including some interesting codes to use), extending my utilization of tags with Google and more. Eventhough I have created and sold videos, I found more "food for thought".

Conclusion

The black on white text and the lack of color within the chapter makes things a little dull. The author explains how to use the hardware and software information but also includes specific helpful techniques concerning what kinds of videos to create with videos. However I really don't like the order in which the chapters are sequenced. Novice and possibly intermediate video users, especially those trying to learn new techniques, should start with Chapter 2 and then Chapter 5- 8. If you want to get to the heart of working with software, for either Mac or PC users , you should start with Chapter 10 or 11.

The screenshots will not explain visually how to use YouTube especially if you run into a little trouble. But what I have found YouTube is not that difficult to use and this book can help start and master using the Video editing and sharing capabilities. If you need more information another book may suffice.

There are few pages for YouTube utilization but that might be enough to get your started as it is fairly easy to use except for more complex techniques. As a confirmed Macintosh user, I like that the author included information about iMovieHD as well as the new version iMovie 8. There are advantages or disadvantages and reasons for using either/or or both of these iMovie versions, The author includes a section about the compositional use of video involving "the rule of thirds" , This was really nice as I found this idea this technique only used for photography. It is "little" specific gems, like this, that are integrated throughout the chapters and really make this book a very useful one for learning about working with video in several ways.

In short, this book is "crammed" with good solid information. This book will not only have you " up and running " in no time but also help you in your improvement of your YouTube movies, ideas and creativity or enhance skills your already possess. The additional technigues and ideas will take your farther over time.Mostly for novice or intermediate users, even Advanced users may learn a trick or two as I did. It might not be the ultimate guide to Online video creation and usage, but it will get your started and take you far.

I have read numerous chapters in the book, and have been very intriqued by the topics that range from basic to complex. There are even chapters on future trends, so people can see where future research is going, which I find very useful as a student researcher myself.
In my opinion, it is a great go-to book.

I have read many books on hypermedia and authorware as it forms the basis of my Masters degree in ICT's in Primary Education but I have found none as practical and clearly presented as this. In Ireland, where I am based, Hyperstudio is very popular but simple, clear, practical guides like this one, with a strong emphasis on evaluation and pupil learning are hard to come by. I would strongly recommend this book to any teacher who is genuinely seeking a new and workable approach to integrating authorware using the project method. The copy I read was loaned to me and I am now placing an order for my own copy.
