The author has done an excellent job of making German approachable to a complete beginner. She begins slowly and proceeds in a clear and logical manner. If you stick with the program, you could actually be speaking a new language in a matter of months. Highly recommended to adult learners.

A Fantastic German Instuction Book

This book starts off easy and gradually works it's way up in a very easy manner. I must warn you that you should not just look over the vocabulary and grammer. I kept memorizing it until I knew it well and then I moved on. My Berliner friend who used to not speak any German to me now talks small sentences to me and says that I have improved dramatically. It's only been two weeks! You have to get this book if you want to learn German quickly. I also recommend Pronounce It Perfectly In German. Hugo's German in Three Months has a good pronunciation section, but this one leaves you talking like a native. They're the best!

An excellant review and challenging introduction to German

"German In Three Months" is a thorough review of German which is user friendly and--when used with the tape option--provides important components of language learning done without a flesh-and blood teacher: hearing a native speaker pronounce, construct sentences, and use the rhythms unique to each language. My purpose in using the set was to resurrect my college German which has been ignored for thirty years. It served that purpose admirably. The set is not in the "useful phrases for the three-day tourist" style; but rather provides a relatively rigorous overview of grammar, as well as a varied started vocabulary. This throughness was wonderfull for my needs; but may perhaps be a bit challenging for the absolute beginner. In general, a very good quality package.

A Panoramic In-depth Education In 3D Design Concepts!

Review Date: 1998-11-20
Janet Ashford and John Odam have teamed up to produce Getting Started With 3D to offer aspiring and seasoned graphic designers alike with the perspective they need to create outstanding 3D graphic images that can be used for a variety of uses, including Website designing. With the heavy emphasis that is placed on Web graphics today, serious web developers cannot afford to ignore the visual impact that good 3D graphics can have!      Creative graphic design plays an integral role in the development and success of any Website. The quality and thoughtful manner in which graphic images are created and put to use will say a lot about the companies, organizations, products, services, and other information represented on the Internet.      There are a number of programs available today that can produce impressive 3D graphics images. Many of them are highly recommended. Samples of their work are provided and their general features are covered in this book. However, to fully appreciate and understand what is involved in creating 3D graphics one needs to develop an artist's eye for creative design. The authors provide a panoramic, in-depth education in 3D design concepts to aid in the design process. The use of shadowing, alignment, and textures are dramatically brought to light. The use of outstanding 3D illustrations, explanatory text, tips, and sidebar comments provided throughout the book contribute to a very fine educational experience!      The large 8 1/2" by 11" format of this book makes for easy reading and viewing. Readers will be inspired to become more creative graphic design artists by what they see and read in this book! They will have no trouble at all achieving favorable results. Highly recommended for every Web graphic image designer!

Whoever you are, whatever you know, you'll always discover something new and often extraordinary in an Ashford/Odam book. I first became a fan when I bought their "Start With A Scan" (best value of any book I ever purchased - yes, ever). Here, our talented and skilled authors have done it again. Marvel as they demystify the somewhat daunting 3-dimensional world. Learn about light, study shadow, let bevels bemuse. Often complex information is presented simply and beautifully. Something I enjoyed hugely about this book is the very clever and appropriate choice of illustration. If, like me, you thought 3d was the domain of adolescents and fantasists you'll be delighted. These are the graphics of the working digital artist - graphics that you and I can learn to create, graphics that delight the eye, that enthrall and attract the shopper. And we all know what happy shoppers make - yes, happy clients! If you want a comprehensive guide to everything 3d, without finding you're tied to using a specific program, this is the book you need. Elegant, informative - perfect.

Ed Gray is a master of meditation. He guides you step by step through a program of spiritual awakening and relaxation that is better than anything I have ever tried before! I have tried numerous other self -improvement/meditation programs and found them to be lacking. They were either too simplistic or so complicated you would have to be a Zen master to figure them out. Ed Gray takes a down to earth yet deeply spiritual approach to lead the listener on a journey to true empowerment. Not only do you get a system by which to wash the troubles of the day away, you get a true conduit to communication with God. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to lead a healthier more spiritual life!

First let me say this: I NEVER write reviews. But after seeing so few written for this title, I feel compelled to offer my praise.

After a half hour of perusing this book, I have
- Learned interesting tidbits about the history of haiku
- Gained several simple but brilliant insights into the spiritual nature of haiku
- Become determined to lead a haiku class at my sons' school
- Started planning for a seasonal haiku-writing party with friends

Put it this way: If you're interested enough in this book to actually read the reviews, then you must buy it. Must buy it.

Great Haiku for Children AND Adults

This book is a gem for adults as well as children. Not only does it clearly and simply explain the elements of haiku, and how to write good haiku, but it contains various projects to encourage children in writing. Included are projects that can be used to involve the whole family in exploring haiku together. As a grandmother who has in the distant past touched into haiku, I found the way this book approaches the subject actually inspired me to resume writing haiku. My granddaughters, 12 and 14, loved the book and are both exploring the medium.

This book is awesome. The author does a GREAT job at explaining about the essential elements of haiku and how to include them in your poetry. This book is great for teachers who would like a simple guide to help them teach the art of haiku to their students. In addition, this book suggests a number of extension activities involving the arts that are great as well.

Review Date: 2004-04-24
While I rigorously maintain my status as a rider on the leading wave of software technologies, I am way behind the curve when it comes to entertainment. Before I read this book, I had only a glancing understanding of the latest technologies in capturing and replaying television broadcasts and other interactive entertainment devices (IED). Even though the information is now dated, I found the book well worth reading.
Like everything else, the advance of technology in this area is amazing, it seems that the only thing that can slow it down is legal action. Each of the descriptions starts at the most elementary of levels, yet is thorough enough so that when I was finished, I understood the advantages and disadvantages of each enhancement. Kovsky is also very diligent in pointing out the costs and explaining some of the difficulties that can be encountered when setting up and interfacing the various types of IED's. Pointers to some of the best improvements that you can do to enhance your experience are also included.
If you are new to the arena of high technology entertainment, then this is an excellent place to begin your education. Be warned however, you will be tempted to purchase some of the equipment that is described.

This book was given to me as a gift. For someone who likes the latest gadgets but is too busy to keep up with all the product offerings, this is the perfect book. Written in clear english with a touch of personality, it is very informative and helpful. I would think that anyone who doesn't have time to shop the personal electronic stores full of people who have no idea of what they are trying to sell would love this book.

Everything you've always wanted to know about TV high tech tools and how to get the most out of your viewing experience is presented in this book. The straight forward, concise and to the point style leaves no room for misunderstanding. Kovsky, who has been a tech journalist for many years obviously knows what he's writing about and explains things like TiVo, game consoles, and video convergence devices with an insiders expertise. I found High-Tech Toys For Your TV very readable and extremely informative. It's a good read but an even better resource for all us TV hounds.

This is a very cool CD showing you the various Newport mansions. You can pan around inside the rooms, looking at all the walls, even the floor and ceiling.

I like it because when you visit the mansions there isn't time enough to see them all, and with this CD I can see them all. Also, I can go back to the rooms that I like and study the details in that room. It is very interesting.

Anyway, I would recommend this CD. It makes great use of new technology and is fun and easy to use.

Love those mansions!

I just love the Newport Mansions. This CD is great because I can never remember all the details when I visit the mansions, and this CD lets you pan around and up to the ceiling and down to the carpet, also zooming in. You can see all the details that give the rooms their luxurious feel.

Also, it's great because I haven't been to all the mansions and through the virtual tours I can see which one I most want to visit next.

Now, if they could just figure out a way to get the CD to give you that musty dusty smell of the actual mansions...

Seriously, this is very cool and if you are only visiting Newport for a short time, it's worth it to see which mansions you really want to see in person.

After the other reviews in this column piqued my interest, I picked this CDrom up in one of the Mansions stores a couple of weeks ago,and boy, am I glad I did! Great insight to the construction of the mansions including, the materials used, styles used, builders etc.. There is a brief narration for each one that gives dates & facts , along with 8 classical tunes that play at random as you wander about. The only constructive criticism is that you don't get narration for each room as you enter, just at the beginning of each VR tour. I'm sure it would've been too costly and time consuming to do that anyway. But, you can even do an auto tour where you sit back and relax, while the camera pans to different rooms, or you can do the manual tour at your own pace. Great quality! Runs smoothly with no popping or skipping, and the picture quality is terrific! You can zoom, spin, look down, up, to get a closer look at that special vase, or to look at the gilded ceiling tiles. Great for those who have never been to get an inside look, or a great momento for those who have visited the 10 mansions from the preservation society. You'll feel like you've wandered back in time to the Victorian age on Bellevue Ave.......................

I'm not sure of the edition I read; someone is borrowing itnow, but if this edition is anything like it, I would highly recommendit. The HyperCard in a Hurry book that I read was an excellent book that got me up and running on HyperCard in no time at all. First-time computer users can learn a great deal about their Macs as they learn how to use HyperCard productively. More experienced computer users will race through the book and come out with plenty of new skills. Beekman leads you through a sample project instructing you all the way in the use of all the tools used. Beekman is a good teacher. Beginners are able to build interesting and useful projects in only a few hours using the book. The presentation is extremely clear and simple and the whole process is a lot of fun. I have to warn buyers that HyperCard is like peanuts and with the skills you learn in this text, you will be immediately hooked and begin shirking your other chores in favor of imagining and then developing projects in HyperCard. Beekman's book was my first experience with HyperCard and soon after reading it I wrote two projects that both sold on their first trips out to publishers. What's more, one of them caught the fancy of an acquisitions editor and got me a book contract with a major publisher. Mil gracias por todo, Mr. Beekman.

So Here I am once again everyone. Hello, this is Chris, and I first started my review project with my video camera, a JVC GDR-270 purchased at Best buy for $299 and iMovie HD, The missing manual, and started to record everything I saw. Using the camera was not difficult but iMovie HD was at first. When opening the application, seemed almost intuitive. But any assisted guidance sure helps in the production process. Having said this, I used the book as I did my work following the guided pictures. I imported my video and began my personal version of a Hollywood production studio (Watch it Warner or Paramount, I think I found my niche,) and edited my movie for final output. During the process, there are tools in iMovie HD that will help make your movie look a bit more professional. What is not there is someone to help in which the book did well. Using the iMovie HD help file can be tedious, and can be very time consuming going back and forth, but with this book in one hand and a mouse in the other, I simply glided through the pages very easily. From start to finish, it was easily explained. I had no problems finding out how to utilize the video from my DV cam. I could explain the process of using iMovie HD but that is a whole other review, my review is on the book and I am glad I did. iMovie HD, the missing manual was a well organized, color photo book with easy to use guides and tips. I am glad I had the opportunity to review it because without it, I would still be importing my video 30 days later. Following the book was easy. But it is lengthy, over 400 detailed pages to follow. But with enough patience, not only will you be able to use iMovie hd on the fly, you will be on your way to utilizing more professional applications like Final Cut express an Final Cut Pro.

Jeff Carlson's Visual Quickstart Guides for iMovie are the best software manuals I've ever used. I've been dipping into the Visual Quickstart Guides for a number of programs for 5 years and I find them easy to read, direct, and clear as a bell. It's a great series and for people who are slow learners like me, they're a pleasure. I also teach iMovie and this is the book I recommend to my students.
