Money Talks: The Complete Guide to Creating a Profitable Workshop or Seminar in Any Field

Lant covers a lot of territory
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-14
This book is dated. Lant writes about cassette-tape duplication
and other outmoded technology. These days making CDs is faster,
cheaper, and sounds better than the old tape stuff that was around
when this book was written in the 80s.

More than 20 years have passed and the technology of promoting
yourself as a speaker has changed - but human nature has not and
Lant gives it to us straight. He discusses how to deal with the
petty Hitlers and bureaucrats of extended education programs -
tells how to get your speaking engagements populated and how
to profit by selling books and CDs from the back of the room -
something that socialist-minded bureucrat employees would rather
you not do.

This book is worth looking over. It contains lots of nitty-gritty
information about how to make money giving talks... how to do
the business and coordinative sides of things. If you want to
be a speaker it's not the only book you should read, but it's
a helpful manual for dealing with the crises that come up when
you aren't at the podium - things that will destroy your chances
of success if you aren't prepared to deal with them in a pragmatic
and sometime ruthless way.

The book is 8.5"x11" and the lines of text are long. There is a lot
of content here. It's a somewhat fatiguing book to read because
there are so many words on each line.

I don't know if I would pay full retail for it because it is kind
of old, but I would recommend picking up a copy because the ideas
in it could help you a great deal.

It worked for me

I don't know what the others were expecting this book to do for them. If your looking to get into the seminar business this book will give you all the information that you need to know about it. It's a complete guide.

Don't expect this book to be some kind of miracle book that will magicaly create a seminar for you, that's your job, but it will give you everything that you need to know so that you can make a educated attempt of putting something together that works.

I'v used this book to help me creat my stop smoking seminars and I can say with complete honesty that this book help me.

Get a copy and use it, don't just read it.

A waste of money

I was given several books from a friend written by Dr. Jeffrey Lant. I suffered through 2 of them and thought I would give him one more try.

But, they all seem to be the same. Lacking any informational value. This one in particular really was useless. I would not recommend that anyone spend their valuable time reading this.

What started off as an intriguing, fast-paced whodunit with a likeable protagonist in Thea Kozak soon began to test my patience. Thea is more victim than heroine, getting beat up, shot, and virtually murdered more times than any normal human being could possibly endure without lapsing into a coma. And still she lets her mother guilt-trip her into taking on the falsely accused's burden of proving her innocence. Perhaps it would be a little bit more believable if she were a actual private eye, like Kinsey Milhone, a cop, or a reporter. Instead, she's an educational consultant, an original occupation for a solver of mysteries, but where's the drama in that? At the very least, if she's going to be getting herself half-killed on the side, she should take a self-defense class. The way she chooses to defend herself against one attacker, for example, is to throw a ceramic cat at him - and miss. As for the mystery itself? I solved it way before she did, and I didn't get hurt in the process. I still read it to the end to find out how the killer is brought to justice, and, oh well, we don't get to see that part. The way the whole affair is wrapped up had me gaping in disbelief, the entire final chapter is a little too tidy and cliched. Very disappointing.

> This is the 3rd in the series featuring Thea Kozak, a New England educational consultant, as amateur sleuth. This time around she's been conscripted by her own mother to help a woman with 2 small children who is being blamed by the authorities for her husband's murder.
> Thea gets pretty banged up in this adventure, perhaps too often for credibility. I also found the motive for murder and the murderer a bit incredible. Still, who reads a mystery for its universality and theme? This is a good -- not a great, but a good -- read; and I look forward to catching up with Thea in her first 2 books which I have no as yet read.

Love the heroine, love the background. Story line okay.

I like Thea Kozak. Her work fascinates me, her love life intrigues me, her mother isn't perfect, which helps to make her real. I think the story line gets a bit violent. But my appreciation of the background will keep me reading Kate Flora's books.

A good basic text on insurance and weather derivatives
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-19
There are only four chapters on weather derivatives themselves and these seem, at a glance, to be mainly re-writes of material that is already available on the internet, e.g. one written by Enron, one by Southern Company Energy Marketing.

Nevertheless, the contributors are key players in the market and this book serves as a useful summary of the available literature. I would have liked to see some advanced material, including explanation of more sophisticated pricing models, but that is perhaps best left to a subsequent text.

The book is certainly not cheap, though it is not unreasonably priced - especially when compared to the amount of money companies are throwing away through failing to manage their weather risks...

More expensive than informative.

Review Date: 2000-07-21
Weather and energy derivatives constitute a 'hot' topic in the derivatives market with new articles, reviews and websites sprouting everywhere. So, this book may seem a timely publication on the topic, given the fact that there are very few publications available on this topic.

However, unless you know nothing about the subject, I do not recommend to buy this book: timeliness seems to be its only quality.

Most articles are descriptive of products and markets and contain little information of interest to risk managers / traders / insurance professionals working in the field. The article on options is a general article on Black Scholes with little or no relevance to energy or weather derivatives.

In brief, it looks as if this book were written for purely commercial purposes. Definitely not worth its high price.

Since my first review, a number of people have asked for more comments on this book. I have therefore written a more detailed review:

This book contains a series of articles covering developments in the areas of Insurance Derivatives, Securitisation and Weather Derivatives. The Weather Derivatives section comprises four articles written by key industry players. It serves as a useful introduction to the weather derivatives market for the newcomer.

The first article provides a broad introduction to weather derivative instruments, contrasting them with weather insurance products. It looks at the weather risk market in terms of the energy chain, from producers through to consumers. The article gives an overview of the most common type of weather derivative presently traded, those based on "degree days". Finally, valuation of weather derivatives is touched on.

The second article presents the current state of the weather derivatives market and summarises the types of deal that have been entered into to date.

The final two articles provide a more in-depth analysis of pricing degree day instruments and cover issues such as: · Establishing correlations between revenue streams and temperature variables; · Use of historical data to extrapolate valuations, including a brief look at the appropriate selection of data and `de-trending' issues; · Introduction to stochastic temperature modelling; · Using value at risk techniques in the context of weather derivatives.

Some of the articles in the book are freely available in the public domain, and this may deter potential purchasers interested in weather derivatives from buying the book. In addition, the book would benefit from some advanced articles covering the use of more sophisticated valuation techniques. As it stands, however, this book is a useful introduction for newcomers to this rapidly growing market, with well chosen articles that provide a good basic grounding.

I thought the problem supplement to Resnick/Halliday was very good. There are simply not enough problems in the text book itself so this problem supplement not only gives problems to work on but it really touches on all bases as far as making sure it looks at all aspects of the material. I'd say, any one learning physics from Resnick/Halliday must have this book.

not good.

Please if you are a student of physics. DO NOT buy this book. Although it has a lot more problems, you dont need to buy it other than the book. The book itself is more than enough cuz it has a lot of problems of its own which are pretty good. Secondly, there are no complete solutions given. I think its just a waste of money.

The topic of becoming an SAP consultant has been so over-exploited in the past several years in newsgroups and chat rooms. Now, the authors have done the same thing in their book. The SAP market has shrunk tremendously in the past 12 mos. Launching yourself into the SAP world now is like closing the barn door after the horse is a mile down the road. On content, the book is filled with fluff. As other reviewers have pointed out, all the stuff in this book is freely available elsewhere. Pass on this one.

Useful only to novices at both SAP and Consulting

For anyone who has been in this business very long, you'll already know everything in here. Many pages are even wasted on re-printing information from FREE IRS publications. Why pay for that? The authors also left out some important stuff, like disability insurance and professional liability insurance.

Utterly ridiculous

Review Date: 2000-03-08
This book is so incredibly contrived, I'm not sure where to begin. How about the part about recommending that a consultant learn to type fast, as it allows one to get more work done per minute and gives the impression that you are busy? In the end, it's just another thinly-veiled attempt by some self-appointed "experts" to cash in on the R/3 phenomenon. There are better books out there that provide a lot more knowledgeable insight on being an independent consultant; they might not be SAP-specific, but neither is a lot of this book's content--in spite of its title.

Simplistic guidebook does not satisfy my questions for practical application of Feng Shui tech.

I picked this up because it looked like a simple introduction. Sure, layout appears orderly, and there are simple charts and really gorgeous photos, and a practical-appearing section in the back with case solutions.

BUT the Feng Shui explanations just don't go far enough. I felt frustrated when I was mapping out my garden and tried to glean practical help from the book. It just isn't technical enough. It seemed more like a magazine article. I felt cheated.

This book is well written, and includes all of the information one will need for an introduction to special education.

This book is about inflicting pain on the reader. It is incredibly difficult to understand and absorb the ideas presented in this book, as the author has a dull, long-winded, and pedantic writing style. Requires rereading many sentences, often just to understand the sentence structure itself, let alone its meaning and context within that section of the book. I can't believe the author intended this as an introduction to Organizational Behavior.

I used this book for an Organizational Behavior graduate course. The overall topic is very interesting, however, the book is incredibly hard to get through. It seems that all of the long drawn out chapters could be cut down easily to a tenth of their size, while still conveying all the necessary information. I found myself spending several hours reading each of the chapters, only to find that the same information was just being regurgitated over and over again. And I had to read many of the sentences over and over until they made sense. Though such an interesting topic, it was difficult, time consuming, and frustrating to get through the whole book.

This was one of the worst textbooks I've ever read. It drones on in excruciating detail for pages before finally stating the main point or idea. People don't think that way. State what you're talking about and then give the supporting details and examples. Not the other way around. It is a very frustrating read. I had to reference other resources in order understand the theories and concepts presented in this book.

I thought this book was one of the worst textbooks I have ever picked up. The best thing about it was finishing it! Organizational Behavior is not the only class I am taking and yet I poured way more time and effort into reading this book than it deserved. It is NOT student friendly. There are no callouts and I simply believe there is a better way to deliver this information than I experienced in this text. That's not to say there isn't a ton of good information in it, but that it's poorly organized and assumes that the reader is familiar with organizational behavior and will know the references the author names by last name only. Also, the entire first chapter was spent telling the reader what he will learn in the remaining 17 chapters. Get on with it. Throughout, the author continues to reference what the reader will learn in upcoming chapters. STOP IT. Revise this piece of junk to something more student-friendly. When I am a teacher, I will not come close to asking my students to use this. I do not recommend this book for someone who is not planning on becoming an organizational behavior major. If you're a teacher, please don't ask your student to read this. Terrible.

Review Date: 2004-09-13
The organization and content of the book doesn't lend itself to use as a tutorial. Heavy on equations/proofs and short on conceptual discussion. You'll need a graduate-school level of int/diff calculus, matrix algebra and statistics to get much out of this book, and that's only if you're interested in detailed derivations and historical perspective. I was hoping for something that would allow me to take the proofs "on faith" and get rapidly into implementation, but that's not in this book. I got a used copy for $2.50 so it was worth that, probably would have balked if it had been much more.

Much too terse.

The authors use non-traditional symbolism and do not always define symbols used. For example, what is wring with the way Papoulis and Peebles define various statistical operators? Changing what is so widely accepted does not make your presentation better. It just takes longer to understand background subject matter and introduces unnecessary confusion into your final topic - Kalman filters.

Better Summary Than Explanation

Don't look to this book as a satisfactory introduction to Kalman Filters. The authors seem to confuse summation with explanation -- this is a good review if you already know the material but it doesn't convey the concepts very well. I studied a 1993 edition of this book with Version 1.1 of the software and the Fortran source code that was provided was incomplete. I see from the author's review that new source code in C has been added since then so this may no longer be the case.

This book is a waste of time, money and trees. I expected some insight to help determine well made Roseville fakes from the real thing. I found nothing useful in this book what so ever. There is no mention of bottom marks, pattern differences or size reduction that happens when pieces when reproduced from an original and all of THOSE things matter. Instead the reader is treated to a rambling narative that repeats over and over, that someday X-rays may become cheap enough to determine only the most expensive pieces from reproductions. GET REAL, most of us don't need or want that kind of hassle when real methods are available to make determinations in the here and now. I nearly became a book burner over this crap, instead I'm returning it to Amazon so that they can level tables and chairs with its pages. sway
