An excellent book on how to coach others in the work place. The book explains what coaching is (not just a buzz word) and gives you the 8 Skill Coaching Model - a process for coaching discussions. Chapter 5 talks about versatile coaching and dealing with the differences that exists between people. Win-Win Partnerships: Be on the Leading Edge with Synergistic Coachin is a newer publication by the authors. It provides much of the same information and more.

I've have used this book with my entire management team and recommend other books from Dr. Steven Stowell on communication, coaching, and performance improvement. Most notably the book Win-Win Partnerships: Be on the Leading Edge with Synergistic Coachin covers much of the same content, but in a newer format. This however, is a classic that should be in your library if you're interested in Coaching in the workplace. Most of the Coaching books I've purchase are soft and weak in their content. Many of these don't really offer a process on "how to coach" or even explain what coaching is. Other books seem to be a "make you feel good" style of book, but don't offer hard skills to coach others for performance. I guess this is why the term "coaching" seems to be misused and abused which I find frustrating. This book offers tangible content and more. This is why it is so respected in the corporate environment and is often required reading in many educational institutions. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I have used this book and a previous book of the authors to assist me in teaching their 3day course in a large company. The book is practical and presents the coaching process as a story the reader gets involved in as he/she is getting involved in the 8 Step Process in the classroom. A number 1 learning tool. It also serves as excellent independent reading as a how-to book which captures the reader's interest.

Excellent 8-step process on "How-to" be a business coach

Short - easy to read and filled with concrete "how-to" information on a collaborative process for facilitating change in someone's performance. The author's 8-step model is based on 20 years research into the "best practices" of successful business performance managers. Very common sense and practical.

This is a great "how to" book. It has plenty of "laundry lists" that all coaches must keep in mind at all times. It is one of the most comprehensive coaching books that I've seen for a long time. This "on my desk" book is guarranted to have plenty of high-liteing and dog-ears within a short period of time. This is a must for new or seasoned coaches and coaches-of-coaches.

What They Forgot To Tell You When They Made You A Manager

First, let me disclose that I am a client of the author. So perhaps I should be upset with Mr. Brounstein for putting out a book that has the same information I paid him thousands of dollars to teach me. Buy the book.

Remember the first time you dealt with a difficult employee - the knot in your stomach as you called them into your office. Learn about giving constructive feedback instead of criticism, and you may just turn a problem employee into a model employee - it happened to me. The knot may not go away completely, but with this technique it will definitely be more manageable. Buy the book.

Work smarter not harder. Learn about Results-based Performance Management, and get results, not just busy employees. Teach your employees to manage themselves by holding them accountable for results, not just activities that you give them to do. Buy the book.

Learn about coaching techniques such as Tutoring With Questions that will get your employees to start answering their own questions - and getting the right answers. Buy the book.

About a year ago I suddenly found myself in charge of 100 employees that had been thrown together from different cultures as the result of mergers and corporate realignment. Through the techniques I learned from Marty that are revealed in this book, I have been able to build an effective team of managers who in turn have helped me turn the organization around. A year ago, we were missing committed deadlines one after another. Now, we consistently meet and often beat our commitments. I often refer to my copy of the book for a refresher on Marty's techniques and regularly refer my managers to the book when they run into difficult situations. Buy the book.

Just in case I forgot to mention it: Buy the book.

This is an excellent tool for getting a better understanding on how to support and help my daughter improve in lacrosse. I wanted to play an active role by getting the book as well as equipment for both of us. Now we toss the ball to each other and practice what we've read in the book. She's definitely getting better.

Don't let the title fool you, anyone with an interest in girl's lacrosse will benefit from reading this. Players, Parents, Coaches, etc. It does a really nice job of going over the basics and emphasizing what is important for a female lacrosse player. She offers some fun games and drills that can be used at any level.

This book is perfect for coaches and players who are new to the game of girls'/women's Lacrosse. Several years ago, when I was recruited to coach my daughter's youth league team, I searched high and low for a book, such as this one, covering the girls' game. I found plenty of books for boy's Lacrosse and a few that had a chapter or two covering girls' Lacrosse. Often, these books covered very outdated techniques and methods. Bottom line, there was no comprehensive guide for teaching and developing young girls into well-rounded Lacrosse players. Coach Tucker's book is a great guide for dad's like me who have men's Lacrosse experience, beginning coaches, new players, and, of course, baffled parents. My favorite section covers the suggested drills. Each drill is clearly defined and well diagramed. She also provides great advice for managing practice and keeping the girls involved and excited about playing lacrosse. I plan to implement many of her suggestions into my practices. A must read for coaches and parents who are interested in developing technically sound players who love the game of girls' Lacrosse.

Louis van Gaal: Genius

During the late 1960's and early 1970's Rinus Michels and Ajax took flowing, attacking soccer and turned it into a science. This science has become widely known as 'Total Football.'

The fortunes of Ajax and the Dutch national team have always been inexorably linked. As it was in the 70's, 80's, and 90's Ajax's stars of today are the Dutch international stars of tomorrow: Cruyff, Van Basten, Kluivert etc.

In the early 1990's Louis Van Gaal and his staff took over at Ajax, reshaping the team, and in less than six years conquered Europe with what was essentially a youth team. Many of these former Ajax stars have gone on to become the backbone of the Dutch national team, and are among the world's best players.

Kormelink and Seeverens,' 'The Coaching Philosophies of Louis van Gaal and the Ajax Coaches,' is a wonderful book, that details Louis van Gaal's time at Ajax, including system/tactics, drills/training, youth development, goalkeeping and general philosophy. This book takes you behind the scenes of one Europe's most influential and respected clubs, allowing the reader the unique experience of critically observing Ajax through eyes of one of football's greatest minds. Van Gaal and his staff meticulously dissect all aspects of the Ajax system from the ground up, providing coaches, players and fans with an indispensable guide to attacking football.

Litmanen, Kluivert, Davids, Overmars, Kanu, Seedorf, the De Boers, Rijkaard, Van der Sar, Blind etc, all make an appearance, and Van Gaal's comments on their abilities, strengths and roles within the system make for some excellent reading. One of the most fascinating parts of the book from a fan's perspective, is Van Gaal's incredibly detailed account of Ajax's preparations for the Champions League final against AC Milan. He takes you through drills, training, tactics, even the warm up --not to mention the game itself, with the thoroughness one would expect from one of football's perfectionists.

Ultimately this is a book of philosophy and ideas, and is among the very best (of the many) football books I've read. Interestingly enough, it's also extremely accessible. While coaches at all levels will find it an extremely valuable resource, players and fans will find it equally informative. I highly recommend it to all fans of Dutch soccer and attacking football.

An excellant book for new and experienced coaches. Full of great drills, practice plans, and advice on how to motivate your players. There is even a section on dealing with parents, a very useful section if you want to enjoy coaching for a number of years.

The drills and practice sections are broken down by age group, not many books do this. The Ripkens stress teaching the fundamentals which is missing in todays high profile sports. They cover it all: hitting, pitching (Cal used to be a pitcher), fielding, time management, game situations, etc...

A must read for coaches who want to succeed!

I bought this book to help with specific tips for coaching my daughter's softball team. Although softball pitching is not covered (after all, this is a bok on coaching baseball) the book provides a multitude of teaching points for teaching kids of all age groups. Although there is some overlap, I would strongly suggest purchasing Play Baseball the Ripken Way: The Complete Illustrated Guide to the Fundamentals also. That title breaks down the necessary skills by age groups and provides a series of drills that can be brought right to the diamond. Both of these books seek to instill the Ripken Way - a philosophy of how to approach youth sports (with obvious emphasis on baseball) with a focus on making the game fun for the kids, while teaching the fundamentals.

I picked this book up based on the review of someone else I know and I was not disappointed. This book held me interest to the last page. Well written, deeply researched, the personalities were absolutely well done. The dressage was spot on. This author knows her stuff. I ride dressage and it isn't often you find a book that is so well researched in the sport. I am looking foward to Ms. Feldman's next book whether it be horse related or not, I'm sure it will be great.

Just finished Collective Marks and I loved it. It is a challenging read from my horse-world novice perspective - not an "easy" book but one to read thoughtfully and thereby to enjoy. I've gained a large appreciation for the dressage and Pony Club philosophies and that makes this book especially wonderful - like going into and learning about a new land. This information reflects the author's personal knowledge and/or tremendous research. I also loved the author's use of the language, as in: "Captain Norstrom looked incuriously around the barn." The development of young Michael is done well and I appreciated the parallels of winning over and training a horse (and rider), thereby getting the best out of both, to the tutoring and maturing of Michael. The dichotomy of harsh-speaking, firm, almost cruel-actioned stable owner Erik to the "horse-whisperer" side of him is worth a book club discussion. I can see a sequel here . . . .

This book captured my interest from the beginning. I was impressed with the author's knowledge of horses and dressage training. I know practically nothing about either, but found the descriptions interesting and informative. You do not have to be a horse lover to enjoy this book.

I was also impressed with the author's knowledge of human behavior and psychology. She shows how at least two of the characters resolve conflicts and grow emotionally as they struggle with their shortcomings while training horses. As the story ended, I found myself reflecting more and more on the psychology of the characters.

this book was a surprise to me- came up as an Amazon Rec'd book, so since I AM a horse lover, had to get it. Once I opened it, I can hardly put it down. Ms Feldman has a terrific feeling for the horse, as well as human nature, and the often complicated relationships between the two.
She is a gifted writer, with excellent use of the language and the book flows very well. She has a deep knowledge of her subjects- which makes things very believable and enjoyable. Even though its a tough topic, as so much of growing up is hard to articulate, she has done an outstanding job. I will look for more books by her!

Review Date: 2006-01-18
There are many books written about communications styles, but none quite like this one. Written by intercultural experts who are also educators, this book goes far beyond the basics of differences in how people communicate. It provides an organizational yet personal roadmap to get a real handle on diversity and how to create greater value from the collaboration of a diverse group of people.

The book uses some unique observation tools to help the reader use the concepts being learned, and it is sprinkled full of stories that illustrate their points exceptionally well.

Perhaps most unique though are the 26 exercises designed for use by individuals or groups to help them do what the subtitle of the book promises - Leverage the power of diverse communication styles.

The authors, in the introduction say more about the very appropriate subtitle, "the subtitle ... reflects our conviction that individuals and groups can benefit greatly when communication style differences are understood, respected, and utilized appropriately."

If you are a leader of diverse groups or a trainer of facilitator, this book belongs in your library. If you are individual ever striving to communicate more effectively with everyone you come in contact with, this book will help you on this journey as well.

A Real Contribution

Review Date: 2005-09-23
I think this book makes an important contribution to the field of intercultural communication. It fleshes out the concept of communication style and emphasizes its importance in face-to-face intercultural interactions. The book's concepts are illustrated with interesting and detailed case studies from the authors' extensive experience with multicultural organizations.

The concepts might be a bit complicated, but not so much so that serious readers can't absorb and use them.

The authors use the engaging metaphor of a circus to tie their ideas together and help the reader follow the flow. This keeps the book from reading like a textbook; rather, it is engaging and thought-provoking throughout.

Finally, I couldn't tell from the writing that this was a book written by three different individuals. It has a uniform style and tone that's not common in books written by more than one person.
