The book covers a broad range of network design/optimization problems in a comprehensive way, and contains a state-of-the-art discussion of a lot of hot topics, e.g., on multi-layer resilient networks, on shortest-path routing (of the OSPF-type) networks, and on fair networks. The reader can also find useful appendices on general optimization methods, generalized shortest-path algorithms, and the notion of NP-completeness, which makes the book well-suited also for beginners. For this reason the book is very helpful for operators in the process of training their network planning staff, as we have found out in our organization, Telekomunikacja Polska. In the case the authors prepare the second edition of the book, I hope they will continue to cover the up-to-date applications and the current optimization methods in the network planning domain, in the way they did in this first edition.

Comprehensive collection of network design problems

A variety of technologies for telecommunication networks is overwhelming. There is no single well-known recipie, telling how to design telecommunication networks. And therefore modelling and comparison of different approaches is very important before choosing the right solution to be implemented. This is especially true for backbone telecommunication networks because there stakes are very high and many factors that have to be taken into account make the design process very complex.

The network design models based on optimization theory are probably most commonly encountrered in the field. And that's exactly what this book teaches the reader- how to model different telecommunication networks with a help of optimization theory. Most of the material in the book concerns multi-comodity flow networks. In my opinion, the book is the most up-to-date and comprehensive collection of network design problems, methods and algorithms, illustrated with extensive examples and accompanied with a right amount of theoretical background and information on existing networking technologies. It covers all the spectrum of problems and design methods- from the most simple to the most advanced, presenting even "hot" research topics. Personally I learned a lot from chapters on multi-layer network design and advanced decomposition methods.

Also I think the book is rather universal and can be used either as a course book (it includes a lot of exercises at the end of each chapter), or as a reference manual (well defined notation makes it easy to find and understand the desired design problem even without reading a chapter from beginning).

This book is a good choice for everyone studying or actively working with network design. Highly recommended!

Useful literature!

Literature that considers communication system problems, tends to be either too practical (not general enough, providing only "ad hoc-solutions"), or theoretical to the extent that the desired "real-world property" is lost (or hopelessly hidden...). This book is a true exception, giving a well-balanced mix of theory and practice, presented in a most understandable and inspiring way. A broad range of relevant communication system problems (for the taken approach, probably all (?)) are discussed, practically all of which are dealt with in a multi-commodity, network optimization fashion. The book is self-contained in the sense that the prerequisites are covered by its appendices. In my opinion, a book of this type (there are not many!) is essential whether you are an engineer or a researcher in this field, simply because that it constitutes a "missing link" between theory and practice.

This is a really compact but yet comprehensive CCNA books that I have ever come across. Engineer planning to take the CCNA test should own this book.

Basically, this book has everything you want to get you started in the networking world, moren importantly prepare you sufficiently for the vital CCNA exam. I particularly like the "compressed notes" for overnite review just days before the exam. The book was designed to provide you the basic understanding of networking. It reinforced what you have gone through in each chapter with some sample test exercise. This would provide the reader on the potential question in CCNA.

With this book, you are basically killing 2 birds with one stone. It not only assist you in understanding the complex networking with its simplified explaination and clear diagram; it also prepares you for the exam.

I have just gone through a few chapter, feeling very fulfilling after going through the evaluation question at the end of the chapter. It gives you the indication on how well is your grasps in the particular chapter ........

It's not a perfect book after all. This book is not meant to provide an in-depth view on Switching & Routing concept. To make up this, you might want to get Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices.

I am very new in the networking world and I feel that this book is able to get me started and rolling. Thanks.

Very Good

This book has done a great job of outlining the principles of the CCNA certification. I have taken several classes from Heather Osterloh and have been successful with each certification(i.e., MCSE and now CCNA). I would recommend this book to anyone interested in obtaining not only their CCNA certification but also a good foundation of networking principles.

Although I got this book at the beginning of this month, I benefit from this book very well.

From simple point of networking to complex topologies, each point is clearly explained. That is, it is designed to welcome most of the needs of an ISP.

I thing each network engineer holds this book under his/her hand.

This i believe is one of the best Juniper reference books i have come across. I have read and used within my job the complete reference by Matt Kolon and Jeff Doyle, aswell as other books. However this reference guide seems to cover the essential aspects of the more upto date Junos versions.
This is an excellent book that is well presented and easy to read, which has to be the killing point, i found the book written as if i where actually speaking to some of the people i know at Juniper through my company.
I passed my JNCIS by this book, I am recommending this book to all my friends who are scattered across various ISP's in the european region that have also implemented Juniper at the amsterdam internet exchange, london internet exchange etc across europe..

Many tech books put you to sleep within a few pages, but not this one. This book is extremely readable. The authors have a very engaging writing style, and the talent for teaching shines through. This book presents difficult concepts in an easy-to-understand way, and throws in enough humor to make sure you were really paying attention. This book is a valuable every-day reference guide, as well as a roadmap for learning JUNOS and going on to tackle the JNCIE exam.

I had the pleasure of attending a course given by Doug Marschke, and I can say his classes were every bit as wonderful as the book. Doug knows this material inside and out, and he has the teaching skills to be able to share his immense knowledge.

Not all Juniper books are created equal and this one certainly tops my list.

This guy should win a award for his wit and apparent knowledge exhibited in each chapter. This book helped me TREMENDOUSLY. Well written and easy to understand...AND kept my attention. They put quizzes at the end of each chapter to make sure you 'got it'. This book is a definate must if you use Juniper.

I'd pay money to hear this guy teach a class on this!

More Than Just an Exam Cram

Although this book is centered on the preparation for the reader to take one of the CCNA examinations, it is more than that. In reality this book is an excellent introduction into the whole concept behind routing as conducted 'a la Cisco.' It covers routing in general and then gives an excellent introduction into the Cisco products that handle routing. Since Cisco is the largest provider of routing equipment this book serves as a source of information as to just which Cisco products are best suited for your particular application.

Beyond simple routing, which is complex enough, in today's world security is always a problem. This book goes into some considerable details in the descriptions of security aspects, including a full chapter on Access Control Lists to limit who has access to what data.

Of course the book is basically oriented to passing the test, and if that is your goal here is the information you need, including sample questions and more. The CD included with the book has more material, including interactive media explaining some 25 activities visually demonstrating key topics and a Flash-based simulation and visualization learning tool.

I have never read such a nice book detailing so much of multi-vendor interoperability issues. It helps you with the protocol knowledge itself and practical knowledge with router configurations. My colleague in PS, Hannes really knows what this is all about.
This book, while pours much theorectical knowledge though, doesn't put me to sleep.
Actually anyone who are interested into large-scale SP network design should read that, at least 3 times. It helps you grow in the telecom field.

The IS-IS Bible

Walt is one of the most prolific networking authors in the industry, and Hannes is one of the few true IS-IS experts in the world. Friends and colleagues both, I am delighted that Hannes and Walt have pooled their extensive experience to produce what is destined to be a classic volume for IP engineers. Going far beyond the basics of the protocol, Hannes details the many design touches--both subtle and not so subtle--that go into creating a real-world IS-IS implementation. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand IS-IS at a deep level, from network architects wanting to understand how to design a large-scale IS-IS network to software engineers wanting to write carrier-class IS-IS code to CCIE and JNCIE candidates who need to understand the protocol but have had little opportunity to work with it in a production environment. And despite the technical deep-dive, the book is written in a friendly, readable style with frequent flashes of humor. I cannot over-emphasize the importance of this book to anyone wanting to truly understand IS-IS.

This book is an excellent reference work and shop manual for the shaper and router. It is well illustrated and gives descriptions of commercially available jigs and attachments as well as practical designs for shop made accessories. I read this book at the home of a fellow woodworker and threatened to steal it from him. I can't wait to get my own copy.

If passing every exam were easy then the certification associated with it would have very little value. The CCNA certification is very tough to get and studying for the exam you want to make sure you cover all the objectives. Coriolis has taken the liberty of preparing a great book/cd-rom package to make you are covered.

For Under ( ) you get the Exam Cram CCNA book which is loaded with information written in a format that while the book may appear to be small in size, believe me the information is huge. The book by itself is enough information to make sure you pass the exam.

Coriolis didn't stop there they also included a cd-rom with over 150 questions and put together more than just a testing cd. The software included is more like a personalized CBT that allows you to customize to your needs and this allows you to learn at a pace that's comfortable for you.

The formatting of the question is in several formats, from adaptive, fixed length and random to lesson specific, review and test all. The application is easy to install, but make sure that you have disable any and all virus software of the installation may hang up your machine.

Overall as with many other Coriolis products I have reviewed this one is one of the best. Coriolis has an abundance to Exam Cram and Exam Prep books in several certification areas, stop by their website and check it out today.

Okay you want to pass the CCNA exam on the first shot so you decide to get the best book around. Then you need another book to cover the major points for the test is in two days. While riding to work you want to be able to learn as you drive and finally you want to try practice test before going live. You think you will be spending ( ), right, wrong.

Coriolis has put together the most complete package that includes the Exam Prep, Exam Cram Practice Tests and Audio Review for CCNA exam 640-507 and all for under $130.00. The exam Prep book is detailed and accurate and it includes a cd-rom with practice questions.

The Exam Cram is written to cover the major points for passing the exam, but more than that it allows you to study in a manner that will makes passing the exam easier the first time around. Also the exam cram has practice questions in it as well.

The Practice Test has five, count them five different complete CCNA tests. Along with that there is over 200 questions in the book, and if that is not enough there is also a cd-rom included with an interactive test that can be taken in several formats.

Finally there is the Audio Review, which is made up of four tapes. The first three cassettes are the complete review of the Exam Cram 15 Chapters and the fourth tape is simply review questions and answers. So there you have it a complete package for the CCNA exam and now your excuses are over. Simply one of the best items I have reviewed in 2000.
