I'll make this review relatively short and sweet. This book is amazing. It's easy to read and follow and the recipes always turn out great. I made lamb tagine tonight (a Moroccan lamb stew with dried fruits, spices, tomatoes & onions) and my lamb-hating fiance had seconds! It was perfect. If you love food, and you want to impress people with your cooking skills (even if you're a beginner, and I am, believe me) you need this cookbook! It's HUGE, but I can accept the extra space it takes on my counter because it's so useful. It's full of all kinds of tips, product recommendations, trial-and-error recipe stories, and diagrams. Perfection!

This book is great: Clarity on the recipes, and background explanation if you want to know more about the lengths they went to in perfecting the recipe.

It really helps eliminate that little nagging voice I sometimes get "Maybe I should add 3 eggs instead of 2" etc, knowing that they already tried several combinations of ingredients to arrive at the given recipe.

One of the best cookbooks I have used!

This book is amazing. I'm newly married and did not start cooking until I bought this book. I read reviews on Amazon, and bought it as a gift for a family member. I started reading it and thought it was so good, I bought one for myself. I didn't cook often before getting this book, but this book is a great starting place as well as a great book for those who know their way around a kitchen pretty well. I love that they explain everything they tried before making the recipes. There is SO much in this book, you won't want to put it down. The chicken parm recipe is the best thing I've ever eaten! Buy this book for you and a friend!

A wonderful gift for the wannabe chef!

I love this book.. it is a staple in our kitchen and THE go-to book when it comes to anything related to cooking.
It's well written with detailed reviews on equipment and ingredients.

There are recipes on here that I have made over 20 times! I can't say that for any other cookbook I own.

A great gift for the bachelor, single gal, or newlywed couple!

Even though this is an older edition, I love this book! The several recipes we've already tried come out fantastic. Take the time to read any excerpts in the book or magazines...they help explain the flavors and methods they chose, so that if you have a slightly different preference it is easy to alter the recipe to desired results (I've easily altered the chocolate chip cookies to get the desired dough finish, but the base recipe is very good). Love Cooks Illustrated!

Yes, this is an excelent book. I cant think of a single recipe that I have made from this book that has resulted in a failure. However there are a few things that get to me when using the book.
1. The Index: The index in this book is perhaps the most absurd index I have ever encountered. I dont know who formatted it but they should never be allowed to create an index for the rest of their career. The way things are tabbed, spaced, and positioned on the page makes it almost impossible to find what you are looking for without sitting down and seriously taking time to search.

2. Christopher "I am depressed" Kimball - At the intro to every single recipe he startes it out with some depressing horror story "Most apple pies turn out soggy, burnt, too crispy, too moist, rotten, dog food..." "most roast recipies turn out like cardboard cooked in a lava flow"

he is depressing.
but cookbook good

I bought this book based on the other reviews. I am a relatively new knitter and while I have knit and purl down it is all of the other stuff that stumps me. I am taking a class now, but when knitting at home and it is five days to the next class and I want to move forward I just look up what is causing me problems in here. I am making a sweater right now (Jo Sharp with Debbie Bliss yarn) and I know that my knitting teacher has taught me how to make one but darned if I could remember. The book had diagrams that I could follow and I was knitting again. I am not turned off by the color of the examples as other reviewers seem to be. This is a reference tool to me and I just want to be able to see what I am doing. A great book, novice or advanced.

I am an advanced beginner knitting enthusiast! This book has everything you could ever need to learn to knit.

I have other books that were called 'the best beginner books' that had poor illustrations or no illustrations at all for every process written about! No guessing with the Vogue Knitting Book! Every stitch and process is well illustrated and the book is filled with clear photographs as well.

I believe this is a must have book for beginners and advanced knitters as well.

When I discovered that my 3rd graders knew who Tupac was, even though he died the year they were born, I felt that I needed to know more about Tupac. This book is published by Vibe, the official scribes of hip hop. It is a collection on interviews and articles that appeared in Vibe and they document the rise and fall of Tupac.
Tupac had "Thug Life" tatooed on his stomach and he lived the life of a misogynist thug. He was disrespectful to everyone around him. Perhaps, as Quincy Jones suggests in the forward, Tupac could've changed into a positive force had he lived past 25. However, this book, and his own words, show him to be a negative influence on everyone he had contact with. It is very sad that he died at such a young age. It is even sadder that so many youngesters know who he was but cannot tell you about the lives of people who have accomplished great things with their lives. I have my work cut out for me next school year.

This piece of work created by the editors of Vibe Magazine could easily be appropriately titled "Essence of Tupac." In this collection of previous interviews and vivrant photos you truely get the feeling that you are holding a conversation with The ledgendary Tupac Shakur. This is a must have for all Tupac fans and for anyone wishing to know more about Pac's Life. Good job by the folks at Vibe Magazine.

As a massive fan of the late great Tupac Shakur, there are few publishings that capture as much information and insight into his life and career as this amazing book from the good people at Vibe Magazine. Consisting of every Vibe article and interview written on Shakur between 1994-97, this gives even the most casual of Pac's fans more information than they could ever dream of. With features on his early career, his signing to Death Row, and his infamous interview with Kevin Powell from inside Clinton Correctional Facility where he denounced "Thug Life", it's all here. This book also contains some of the most informative material on the feud between Death Row Records and Bad Boy. You'll get everyone's side of the story on the Can-Am Studio shooting. You'll hear what both Suge and Puffy had to say about the East vs. West saga. You will also get to hear Pac at his rawest and most candid. If you are even the least bit interested in the amazing story of Tupac Shakur, you should pick up this book.

A message to each and every reviewer who takes time to add thoughts to a any media of memorial of 9/11, World Trade Center Towers tragedy... thank you from my heart.

My spouse and I resided on the Lower West Side, Battery Park City, Gateway Plaza, So. End Ave. As survivors of the 9/11 World Trade Center Towers tragedy... From our Gateway Plaza apartment, facing the street and 300 yards from the Towers, we helplessly witnessed all from our apartment windows. The closeness of the Towers viewed from our windows - gave an illusion that one could reach out and touch the Towers; their beauty with night lights reaching toward the sky promoted a contemplative emotion.

We viewed the planes entering the Towers, the overwhelming inferno, individuals jumping, the collapse of the Towers, the darkness as debris hit our windows with a fury. What occurred over a period of hours, seemed like a much shorter time span. The darkness was darker than an eclipse, darker than the darkest night; and then a momentary hush after the air cleared. Viewing the roof garden one floor below, with the human reaction of looking out to see if someone might be on that roof garden and in need of help. Debris strewn everywhere, recording tape and paper hung from the trees of the garden and oh, so much ash. The momentary hush, whether real or imagined, then the viewing of debris for a second, fantasized that a parade had just passed by on our short street. I now really understand the expression a "feeling of helplessness", I couldn't fix what had just happened.

We vacated our apartment finally at 5:15 p.m. that day, waiting for someone to knock on our door, with only a battery radio to keep us abreast of happenings. "In a New York minute", we evacuated via the stairwell touched with ash, the result of a first floor door left open. With a few belongings, gathered with a tad of thought of what was being left behind, we stepped out of the door onto the pavement, seeing and standing in ever so much ash & debris, I wanted to turn around and go back to our home. It was one moment of reality in time, I carry to this day.

We planned to walk up the East Side, glimpsed the tired fire, police, volunteers, and med techs in our immediate driveway and street, so instead opted to pass through the building in back of the apartment complex. We gained access to the Esplanade walking the short distance to reach the Hudson River North Cove dock. We were escorted to the New Jersey shore via New York Police boat. From the boat deck, we viewed even more damage to the Manhattan skyline, especially noting the zigzag shape of the side of the American Express building, housed in one of the World Financial Center buildings along with the glorious Winter Garden, as well as the fall of World Trade Center Building 7. We were taken to the Jersey City Hospital, attended to by compassionate staff. Then traveled by National Guard truck to Hoboken, NJ where we were housed by a wonderful family who with great trust welcomed strangers to their home.

On Friday 9/14, our eldest son & daughter-in-law drove from New Hampshire via New Jersey routes to Hoboken for transport us to New Hampshire for temporary residence with our daughter, who along with her friend and our youngest son, greeted us with open arms & the overwhelming feeling of not wanting to let go with each hug that followed. Our daughter and son had spent that Friday in New Hampshire collecting items of clothing and necessities which the Concord community generously opened their hearts and donated by churches, stores, individuals, employers, American Red Cross, et al.

One of our grandchildren -- he was 8 at that time - arrived home from a few days with his Dad. He hugged us so tight, understanding the depth of 9/11 events for someone so young and yet so wise. He told Grandpa & Babcia that he had something for them... his Mom was not even aware of his gift. He had spoken to his classmates about his grandparents' closeness in location of the World Trade Center Towers. Presented to us was a large envelope full of hand-made cards from each of his classmates. And if that isn't love and caring, I don't know what is - from the hearts and minds of children!

Residing now in New Hampshire, not because of 9/11 drove us away, but circumstances just went that way as we continue to put our lives into perspective.

We Miss - New York City deeply; events found nowhere else in the USA, the introduction to & interaction with so many wonderful cultures. There isn't a day or night over these years that we do not think of 9/11... the Lady of Liberty & Ellis Island both on the merge of the East and Hudson Rivers. And that Lady of Liberty wept, I just know it, & still stands with pride that the USA is a democracy that will prevail.

We Remember - the victims, the survivors, their friends and families, the workers from the public and private sector, the volunteers, our neighbors in Gateway Plaza and staff in the small group of stores on South End Avenue, Battery Park City.

We Remember - the places we visited, the book signings attended, the celebrities we met, the concerts and theater plays, the movies, the arts, the parks, the strangers we talked with, on streets, on subway and those while standing in line for an event...

We Remember - Always In Our Hearts, Forever In Our Souls, Heroes, Victims, Survivors One and All... We Were There.

Painfully, the lump in my throat and the twist in my stomach, the tears in my eyes and the pain in my heart, to the depth of my soul, forever reside.

I have searched for this book for years. My first read was to my two children back in 1979. This story made quite an impact on all of us. We always refer to living like Miss Twiggley and finding a nice house in a tree. It promotes good charater in children and adults alike. I bought this book for my 9 grandchildren and we will read it when we all get together for celebrations. I know Miss Twiggley and her dog, Puss, will make an unforgetable impression on them all.

A delightful story that warms your heart that you will want to read to your children again and again.

This book was my oldest son's absolute favorite, and we read it over and over again and examined the pictures with loving care. The illustrations are terrific, and so many years later, I can still recite the rhymes of most of the pages from memory. It's a sweet book with a worthwhile message gently told.

If Ned can survive, we can, too. My children loved this book and still remember it as young adults. I was thinking of it today, with the world so full of bad news. Unfortunately there is so much economic disaster and terrorism and I might lose my job. Fortunately, we still have books like this and we still have our sense of humor. Buy it for yourself.

Wow, a recipe book that really does only cook enough for two people! I'm shocked and amazed because I was beginning to think it was impossible to avoid having leftovers when just cooking dinner for my husband and myself. Bonuses: the ingredient lists are short (no counter full of ingredients during prep!), ingredients can be found at any local supermarket (no traipsing to specialty markets!), meals are healthy, and the meals are fast to prep and fast to cook. And most importantly, most of recipes we've tried have been definite keepers. I raved so much that my mom bought the book and now she raves back at me!

From the very first recipe I tried in this cookbook (pork tenderloin with mango-ginger sauce) i have absolutely loved everything. Nothing I've cooked yet has had any of the "normally bland" flavors that some healthy cookbooks serve up. The titles alone make you want to cook each dish. The sweet potato fries are a new favorite of mine, and last night i even declared that they could be eaten every night! It also answers your questions without you having to search around for answers - as you read the recipe, you might think to yourself "wait, what does that mean?" only to find the very answer you're looking for at the bottom of the page! I love that it breaks down the nutrition information per serving, if you're trying hard to be health concious, this makes it much easier. I have and will continue to recommend this cookbook to freinds and family, I LOVE IT!

Most take less than half an hour to prepare and they have all turned out quite well - I've received several compliments on meals that I've cooked from this book. Truly recipes for two, and it gives great tips on what to do with the inevitable 'leftover' ingredients you have when cooking for two. I did make some tweaks to accommodate personal preferences but they are great as is also.

I recently purchased this cookbook and have already tried several of the recipes. I have been amazed by each one-- they are incredibly simple, and generally rely on ingredients that most well-stocked kitchens have on hand. The portions are perfect, and the sections on how to shop for two as well as the how-to section in the back are very helpful. The Mrs. and I are trying to cut back on our portions and eat healthier and this book is helping us to achieve those goals. You will not be disappointed if you buy this book. Bon appetite!

This is absorbing reading, even for people not remotely interested in motorcycling. Egan's easy style appeals to those who seek the out-of-the way places and indulge in spur-of-the moment holiday journeys.
To the avid motorcyclists these books are a must have. They run a close second to actually mounting up and riding off with saddlebags packed for a weekend in the mountains or at the seaside.

Rated as good read, an enjoyable collection of magazine column stories.

Peter Egan is the author of the Side Glances column in Road & Track magazine and the Leanings column in Cycle World magazine. He is noted by his readers as having a self-deprecating, ironic, and sometimes dark sense of humor, including detailed accounts of the failings of his vehicles.

Peter Egan loves motorcycles, and lives to write about them, the folks who ride them, and the places and states of being we experience while riding. His style is conversational and casual yet intelligent and informed, as though you were having a fireside chat over a beer with the world's greatest guru on the subject who just happens to be a humble ordinary guy like you. And you are. In this collection of some of his best columns and feature articles from Cycle World magazine, where he has been a contributing editor since 1978, Peter shares with us his love of the sport of motorcycling, the bikes and riders he has known, and several keen-eyed journals of his travels to some of the world's most beautiful curvy-road places, including the green hills of his native Wisconsin. This book is a must-have for any thinking motorcycle fan.

This is a wonderful book that really captures a lot of things besides motorcycles. The thrill of discovering new country, staying in cheap motels, dodging weather, and enjoying life all come through in this book. Mr. Egan discusses all of his experiences, from finding and fixing old motorcycles through trips with his wife with a sense of bemused wonderment, never taking himself too seriously. A great book, highly recommended.

I love People Magazine, but my favorite part is the Puzzler. So when I saw they made an entire book...I bought it right away, in fact I bought both that were available. People magazines crosswords are the best entertainment based crosswords out there and to have them all in one book...FANTASTIC. If you are a fan of the Puzzler, then you will love this book!

I actually don't have this book... I have the new one that they say hasn't been released yet (I got it at wal-mart). Anyways... these books are super fun and they are pretty easy. I like the fact that clues are reused throughout the book, so the more you do the easier it becomes. If you have any knowledge about 'pop culture' then you will be able to do this. Is this the hardest crossword book... NO. But if you're just looking for something fun and easy to do on a slow day then this is perfect.

The puzzler is the best part!

I'd say I'm more of a word search gal than a crossword puzzle girl, but I have always enjoyed the Puzzlers in People magazine. I find them to be of a 'medium' difficulty, and often contain items that I recognize easily. The hardest part for me is to avoid the temptation of peeking in the back when I get stuck (my husband has caught me doing this a few times)! I keep this in the drawer of my bedside table to work on a puzzle or two before going to bed.

Liked the puzzler book but pencil or pen marks go through to the back of the page. I have to put a piece of paper on the other side to keep it from bleeding over.

I LOVE IT
