An excellent step by step guide to learning Hibernate

I love this book. I wish all technical books were written this way.

A few months ago, I had a job interview and they asked me if I knew Hibernate. I told them that I didn't know it, but I could learn it. So they gave me a little sample database problem - they wanted me to build a one-to-many, bi-directional join - and asked me to spend the weekend reading tutorials on the web and see if I could get something up and running by Monday morning. So I hit it hard. I read everything I could find, just trying to get something that worked. But I wasnt able to get it working, so I didnt get the job. But I still wanted to learn Hibernate, so I bought the book "Java Persistence with Hibernate" that everybody raves about. That book was not good for me. It seemed ponderous. It has all sorts of references to JSR white papers and stuff like that. I dont care about white papers. I just wanted to find something that would help me figure out how to get my project running. I read 500 pages of that book, and I still felt confused.

So then I bought Hibernate Made Easy, and I LOVE it! It starts out with some very simple examples, so you get something working and you start to gain confidence. The first chapter is about how to set up Hibernate, and the second chapter is about testing your setup. Then he starts off with some very simple code that saves a record to the database. And then gradually he increases the complexity of the problems and the solutions until by the end of the book you're ready to solve real world problems. It's great. It's very logical and straightforward, and surprisingly, it's also fun to read. I mean, this is a book about Java persistence, but it's fun to read. How did he do that?

After I finished reading this book, I went back and tried to do the job interview exercise again to see if I had learned anything and guess what? I was able to finish it in only 75 minutes. It only took me 75 minutes to do something that I had spent about 48 hours trying to do before. Man... I wish I had read this book earlier.

This book is thorough, easy to read, light-hearted, and it tackles all the difficult topics in a logical, step-by-step way. I think it's an outstanding book. After reading it I feel prepared to tackle my next interview. I feel like I can confidently say "I know Hibernate."

The perfect book for learning Hibernate. Reads like a Head First Book, but with attitude.

This book is a must have.

Easy introduction to Hibernate with Annotations

This book is a great introduction to Hibernate and all the code really works. The examples are pretty good and the author builds upto a simple set of classes which illustrate all the mapping concepts. I had avoided working with Annotations and Hibernate before but I found them easy to work with and understand.
The chapters on Mappings and How Hibernate Works are very good. Keep a copy of Java Persistence with Hibernate to supplement some of the concepts. This book is meant to be an introduction so does not cover advanced topics like transactions, caching and optimization.

Awesome book/guide/primer - but make no mistake in thinking that this book is a just a primer. It covers a lot of topics and is written in a very easy, reader-friendly and intuitive fashion. Most (pretty much all) of the code is error-free and is very easy to understand (This is useful very much especially for Newbies). BEST/PERFECT book to learn Hibernate. If you are a newbie, look no further - this is THE book to learn Hibernate. A++. Shining Five stars for this book. I hope the author of this book (Cameron McKenzie) publishes more technical books like this is in future. (If there is something like a "Made Easy" series with books like this from this author, I guess it would be at least equivalent or greater than "Head First" series). What more - find a bug in the code and win $100! (I am desperately trying to find a bug in the code to buy good earbuds for my ipod - looks like it is not going to happen..)

This book really got me started on Hibernate. Before I bought this book, I bought Java Persistence with Hibernate book. Soon, I realized that Java Persistence with Hibernate book was not a good introductory and tutorial book. So I decided to try the Hibernate Made Easy by Cameron. After reading Hibernate Made Easy, I have a good understanding of Hibernate and I am ready to move on to more advanced topics. I gave five stars to this book for the following reasons.
1. The book was written in simple, clear and concise manner. It is easy to understand and absorb.
2. The code examples in the book works.
3. The book uses a simple development and deployment environment so that I did not have to download a tons of software to get the examples working.
4. The examples use mySQL database instead of HSQLDB like in other Hibernate books. So it is more practical.
5. This book is not just about learning Hibernate. It is also about how to apply this technology properly. The author included tutorials on how to design the persistent layer using Data Access Object and Factory design patterns.
6. This book has web application examples using JSP and Hibernate running on Tomcat. These examples are very simple yet very poweful. They get to the point.
7. Finally, about the author. Cameron loves to hear from the reader. He accepts the reader's comments and he shares his ideas freely with the reader.

The world of Internet marketing for the individual has nailed my interest as at least an avocation. For one who comes to the field with no real background, aside from being in IT, generally, there is the immense challenge of picking a course of action to try to move ahead. After testing the waters of various alternatives, one may come to the conclusion that there is a lot of stuff out there to learn from of varying quality, but relatively few that can paint a rather comprehensive and seemingly level-headed picture of the subject matter. From the larger view, it can be easier to make wiser choices on how and what parts of the activity that you want to emphasize. It seems to me that Impact is an immanently readable and informative road map of the topics that seem to pop up over and over again as one's exploration continues.

As a fellow author, Ken teased me about a month ago with one chapter from his new book, Impact: How to Get Noticed, Motivate Millions, and Make a Difference in a Noisy World. It about drove me nuts waiting for the book to come out so I could finish it.

That's the way this book flows. Ken pulls you in easily with his warm sincere desire to help others and fascinating stories that connect perfectly to his message...then he forces you to really look at yourself and your place in the world. All this while he shows you exactly how to literally take control of whatever it is you desire, bring it about, and impact the world in a positive way.

That's a heck of a lot to pack into any normal-sized book. But that's just the way Ken does things. You can't go wrong getting this book for yourself. You'll have an immediate impact on the world if you get several and make sure your friends and family have a copy, too.

Ever pick up a book and just from the feel of it know that it is THAT GOOD? Buy a copy now and use it. Drop everything else that you are doing! Have your friends buy copies and use them. I am not even done with it and it has already made a healthy difference in our lives. Celebrate and share with this wonderful book. We are the change that we seek. And there is nothing out there to stop us: Political and corporate corruption, warring nations, pollution, terrorism, the economy... are all realities and simply no longer excuses.

There are a lot of self-help/empowering books out there. And there should be. Ordinary people need to know that they are quite capable of extraordinary things. (And it's actually pretty easy!)
Different people will react differently to a given message, usually, but I can tell you this: Ken MacArthur's brilliant AND reachable writings in his new book, 'Impact...' will truly have a profound 'impact' on anyone who picks it up. There is a down-home, comfortable feel to the writing style, and certainly an inspiring wealth of information for anyone who wants to believe they CAN make a difference. This book is a call to action. It is a call to believe. It is also a collection of real-life examples of ordinary people doing- you guessed it- extraordinary things. Everyone wants to make a difference in the world. Let this extraordinary author show you some amazing strategies used by some of the world's most successful people- and some very ordinary people. Then go create your OWN impact!

A Summary of Online Marketing Tactics

Review Date: 2008-06-17
The promise of this book was to help anyone to make an impact in an already crowded marketplace. The author is sincere and writes in a warm and friendly manner. The direction of the book is almost exclusively toward online marketing.

Having studied online marketing through email subscriptions and paid mentoring, I found little in this book that I was not already familiar with. There is a lot of attention paid to joint venture partnering, but it seems geared toward those who are already fairly successful marketers. Making the leap from newcomer to one who might seriously be considered by these top-level marketers is one that I thought should have been given more attention, given the purpose of the book. Many names were mentioned of people the author has partnered with that I do not believe would be accessible to most marketers.

I liked his advice to keep marketing concepts simple, but again, that is not new. The book contains some good inspriational stories and snapshots, and I found these to be the most interesting parts of the book.

This may be a good book for the newcomer to online marketing techniques in becoming more informed, but the newcomer will be left with many unanswered questions as to the implementation of its ideas.

I bought this book because I adore the cover, and much to my surprise, I enjoyed the content too. It's a fun book that made me LOL. I relate to some of the characters that author Trisha Ventker is so adept at describing. What a fun romp!!!

Most young people I know who have met mates on the Internet have had both good and bad experiences. You just have to be careful whom you invite into your life. There's some good advice in this book too.

Buy it and enjoy! Don't expect the greatest masterpiece, but DO enjoy a fun read on a lazy Fall evening.

Highly entertaining!

I could not put this book down! This girl next door knows how to tell a story. The portrait she makes of all her dates is so precise and accurate, you feel like you know them! Actually, good or bad, you've probably been on a date with someone just like them! Although a married woman myself (and a happily married one), I sometime long for the magic and romanticism of first dates... This book is a great reminder of what it really is like out there! Until you get to the last chapter and you get lured into wanting to date all over again!
A fun book and great escape from life (single or married!)

This book is a fun, light hearted read about the trials of on-line dating, a subject that much of the single world can relate to. I had many laugh out loud moments and loved the author's descriptions of the men she met and the environments she encountered on her adventurous dates. The author often had vibes, bells and sometimes whistles (her intuition) that indicated something about her date(s) was off. Sometimes she listened and sometimes she did not. It reminded me of my own need to trust my intuition that is so often a better judge of character than my heart and head which tends to rationalize, minimize, intellectualize, etc. I liked how the author wrote about a human experience, finding a life partner, with the ability to see the humor and, at times, the absurdity, of this experience, which is an earnest and often daunting pursuit for many people.

Some peculiar dates indeed

The stories are offbeat dates from the author's own experience. It's not as downright strange or funny as "Dates from Hell" in which the disaster dates were from numerous people. However, it's worth a read.

I like this organzer - it's sturdy, and looks just like a black spiral journal, so it doesn't scream it has all of your passwords inside. It serves it's purpose; if I didn't have this, I wouldn't use a regular journal or notebook for my passwords. But because it has the alphabetized tabs and specific spaces for website, user name and password information, it's easier to remember to put it all in one place. Good purchase, although I feel that at $19.95, it's much more expensive than it should be.

I cannot compare this to similar items of other brands, since this is the only one I have ever purchased. However, I can say that I am entirely happy with it and wish that I had purchased it much sooner. It takes all the hassle out of remembering passwords and user names to various websites - something that was the bane of my internet activities for a long time. It has a nice spiral binding and a hard cover and is perfectly suitable for my needs.

I purchased two of the Internet Password Organizers through Innovention Lab- one for myself and one for my husband. He really needed one because every month he forgets his user names and passwords for online bill paying. I needed one to replace my Journals Unlimited brand Write It Down series "Email & Websites: An Online Journal," which I had outgrown (it only has one page for user names and passwords). I was surprised by how fast Innovention Lab shipped out my purchase (purchased online on a Saturday afternoon and rec'd on Wednesday afternoon), and was happy that they give you a USPS Tracking Code to see where it is. I was happy with the minimum (eco-friendly) packaging- only a cardboard box with brown kraft paper used as padding. They also included a baggie with two pens, as well as a couple of business cards with a 10% off discount code to hand out to friends and family. I have begun to use mine and find that the tabs are sturdy and printed on both sides. My only complaint is more of a personal preference- I am not a fan of spiral bound books, and would have preferred a sleek binding similar to those seen on Moleskine notebooks. Either way, I look forward to using this notebook for a long time, and just hope my husband gets into the habit of using his! =)

This book presents an excellent executive overview of the mobile applications landscape. The strength of the book is the unique perspective of extending "E-business" investments to the "M-business" -- mobile/multichannel -- environment. It presents the business side of mobile - CRM, SCM, Mobile Office and Mobile portals - without getting mired in the alphabet soup of 3G, GPRS, UMTS etc.

Intelligence Future Shock
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-31
Most current and objective risk assessments indicate that the risk environment faced by the U.S. during the Cold War has drastically changed. The risk of conventional war with peer nation states has been greatly reduced while the risk of asymmetrical war by non-state actors has greatly increased. Further because of the dynamics of the globalization, regional instability, failed states, pandemics, poverty, and immigration all have become serious risks to U.S. National Security. This new risk environment clearly needs a new carefully crafted National Security Strategy based among other things on timely and accurate strategic intelligence.

Which brings us to this altogether remarkable book by Robert David Steele. In spite of, or perhaps because of, the many recent efforts at reform the U.S. Intelligence System remains culturally moribund. Steele offers a rather detailed plan to rebuild this system into an open, flexible, and relevant source of knowledge about the threats and risks faced by the U.S. in the 21st Century. It is necessary not just to read this book, but to think carefully about what Steele is proposing. For example, this reviewer had to really contemplate such strange concepts as a "Global Knowledge Foundation" and "University of the Republic", before fully understanding how such institutions are vitally important to the sort of Intelligence System that Steele is advocating.

Now Steele has written a number of books that offer innovative, if radical, ideas about reforming intelligence, but this is the only one of his books that provides sufficient details to understand how he really would like to transform the U.S. Intelligence System into a system capable of dealing with both military and non-military threats and risks to U.S. security. The opportunities and risks of the phenomenon called "Globalization" are fluid and often elusive. It will take an intelligence system such as the one Steele is advocating to provide the knowledge needed to formulate an effective National security Strategy to deal with both the opportunities and risks.

This book is not an easy read. Readers need to be pro-active in critically thinking about what Steele presents. This effort will be rewarded with new and original insights on the state of U.S. security. More to the point Steele will provide the reader with a clear and unique understanding of the often arcane world of intelligence.

Nice contents, ugly packaging.
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-20
As a book, it's rather ugly. The pages are obviously printed out by an inkjet printer or something (you can actually see some jaggies in the font), and the index is created by MSWord indexing menu, which has multiple entries of the same item, and the way he indexes whole phrases makes it very hard to look up.

It's contents are extremely repetitive. You'll see the same ideas and examples expressed over and over and over and over again, in almost exact same wording. With proper editing, this book would have become 1/3 the volume that it is. The ideas are interesting, although some part, like his suggenstion that the US government should engage in industrial spying, seems questionable. Also, when he uses the word "Open Source", it's not the open source that the people in the software community is used to, so be careful. But it's a book worth skimming through.

relevant to DC sniper case

Review Date: 2002-11-09
For over a decade, Steele has been trying to draw attention to the fact that intelligence needs in the post-Cold-War era require different strategy, organization and tactics. This book is a useful summary of his views.

One point of emphasis is "open source" intelligence--the information that is available from sources outside of the secret intelligence community. Steele argues that the institutional secretiveness of the FBI and CIA is a hindrance rather than a help.

Another point of emphasis is language translation. A further point of emphasis is the fact that threats no longer exclusively take the form of powerful nation-states. I wish that the book focused more specifically on Islamic terrorism, since the other potential threats seem more remote at the moment.

Yet another point of emphasis is database integration. Writing this review in the aftermath of the DC sniper investigation, this seems to be an important point. Before the suspects drove to Maryland, they were involved in a murder in Alabama at which one of them left a fingerprint. Had the Alabama police been able to access a national database, they would have been able to identify the murderer and perhaps apprehend him. Instead, the fingerprint was matched only after a dozen more murders and after the suspects themselves told police to connect the dots to Alabama.

Lack of database integration kills.

Open Source Intelligence

Review Date: 2001-12-12
The author of ON INTELLIGENCE is an experienced US intelligence expert. Robert Steele's main suggestion to the Intelligence Community is augmented openness. The existing culture of secrecy needs to be changed, because its methods are not effective enough to protect US national security in the 21st century. Openness would create a new environment of understanding intelligence and detect subversive activities. Using open source intelligence means exploiting pluralistic knowledge from universities, research facilities and private companies, which is available at comparable low cost. Classified intelligence often failed to support political decisions, because the policy-maker might not be cleared for such information. Unclassified intelligence can solve this particular problem of compartmentalized dissemination. Therefore, the author advises to link classified information with national competitiveness, making intelligence the apex of the knowledge infrastructure. Part three of his book lays out the core concept of "Creating a Smart Nation" through "Presidential Intelligence".

Robert Steele is the one man crusade for the importance of open source intel. This and his more recent New Intelligence tell and show why open source intel is the most useful means of understanding the world around us and at the same time maintaining our personal liberties. To him each citizen should be running their own open source collection in in the areas of their personal interest. Read both of these books. Buy both of these books. Then go to the OSS convention in Washington. You'll quickly see how muth the professionals think of him.

A "must have" Oracle book for anyone who works with Oracle on a day-to-day basis. The database efficiencies I have been able to obtain for my clients by simply using Rich's book as a point of reference are well worth the cost in purchasing it.

All of the things that you wish your QAs knew....and more!

One of the most difficult hurdles a QA new to performance testing can go through is shifting their testing methodology from specific to componenents to a balanced environment-wide perspective. This book helps guide the Architect or QA through the process of discovering HOW we look at metrics and WHY we use certain metrics over others. This is much more useful in the long run than rather just looking at WHAT to look at since this can vary depending on your specific infrastructure.

If your reading a RedBook on WebSphere Performance Tuning and you haven't yet figured out what your Peak Average Load is, your performance testing is doomed to fail. This book guides you on the right path to the methodology that will work for your testing. It provides test plan guidelines and even sample scripts. In addition, there are several guidelines for analysis and interpretation.

The book only requires a couple of things to be a truely complete performance testing guide in my opinion: More detailed information and guidelines for Performance Testing Failover situations and slightly more concise guide for scripting. For the type of sites that you'll use this book for, you'll most likely have more complicated scripts and script requirements.

Over all, this book provides a great introduction of the core concepts and outlines quite a few of the more overlooked requirements in this increasingly important field.

This book's title has "Java" in it (and book covers Java performance analysis very well), but large part of it is about web performance analysis approach and methodology that can be applied to non-Java web sites. This is a great resource and a must have for those who deals with performance of web sites. Simply look at the table of contents and you'll love it: http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0201844540/ref=sib_rdr_toc/104-1411948-5301507?%5Fencoding=UTF8&p=S00H#reader-link

It takes a comprehensive look at the java performance analysis. It is very good at describing common bottlenecks be in architect, hardware (load balancing) , user interface etc.

Ideas are well received by our team and book provide food for thought on diverse topics. We have continuous integration testing and continuous inspection (and adaptation) for performance testing and this book was very helpful.

This is an excellent book, providing thorough coverage of performance analysis. Although this book is aimed at Java based sites, it would serve as a good primer for anyone learning how to tune a website with dynamic content. The authors assume the reader has only basic familiarity with internet technologies, and explains concepts as needed. After providing a basic theoretical grounding, the authors illustrate the concepts with a case study, going from simple to complex.

The book is well-organized and thought out, and presents its information in an understandable, easy to follow fashion. I particularly like the inclusion of the test and capacity planning forms in the appendix. This gives readers the chance to put the information to work, instead of just giving case studies or presenting only theory.

A highly recommended and informational book.

The team of authors who wrote this book have two things going for them - in-depth knowledge of performance analysis, and, most importantly, the ability to impart that knowledge in a crystal clear manner.

I like the way this book starts out, showing the contrast between a bricks & mortar store and its online equivalent. This introduces the basics - throughput, transaction, page and user rates, response times and states. More than an easy to follow introduction, it contains all of the key elements of performance analysis, doled out in easy to understand chunks, and sets the stage for the rest of the book.

Every facet of a typical environment is covered, including Java server performance factors, external and internal factors related to networking, load balancers, protocol behavior, and Java internals. The chapter on performance profiles of common web sites is especially useful. Different site types are characterized in a set format that shows caching potential (of the site type), any special considerations, and specific performance testing considerations. This allows you to go directly to the type of site you are going to test, get the relevant information, then proceed to conduct the testing, which is covered in subsequent chapters.

The chapters on testing begin by showing how to develop the test plan, associated test scripts, and select the right tools to support the testing. The areas covered in these chapters are comprehensive. Actual test execution and results analysis are covered in equal detail, using examples and scenarios. One especially useful chapter is 13, Common Bottleneck Symptoms, which is useful to track the cause of observed results that do not match expected ones during testing.

This book goes beyond testing, though - it also covers capacity and performance planning, which is normally a discipline onto itself. Again, excellent advice and coverage of key points. The appendices are an invaluable collection of templates, worksheets and checklists.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It exemplifies top notch writing, is well illustrated, and is technically accurate, and based on proven approaches.

I need a blog for the homebuilt aircraft community, particularly those working with composite (fiberglass) technology. I work alone and will require additional help with developing a good active blog. This book has helped me to ask the right questions of the professional IT type who must help me get the blog going.

DL Byron and Steve Broback have really done an excellent job in writing this very thorough primer on blogging for business. The book, actually, is more than a mere primer: its breadth is surprising. They've managed to cover virtually every aspect of business blogging in a mere 180 pages. Quite an accomplishment and one the authors can certainly take pride in.

The approach is linear, beginning with an explanation of what a blog is, determining the focus of your business blog, the varieties of blog, design, tools for blogging, writing the blog, getting noticed, monitoring and managing and ending chapter on syndication and other fine points they refer to as "beyond blogging".

What is impressive is how much solid information the authors manage to convey without overwhelming the reader. The writing style is comfortable and spare. They avoid technical language and do a good job of explaining each point.

Overall this is one of the best books on blogging I've seen. It is practical, not theoretical and the authors left dogma and cant at the door. They are clear that blogs are not miraculous but can certainly help a company advance toward its goals.

Well done and a worthwhile read that will serve as a quick reference after you've read it.

Great! (and not just for businesses)

As a longtime blogger and an entrepreneur I approached this title from New Riders with interest. I was happy to find out a wide range of information that I immediately put to good use in my own blogs. Interestingly enough, though the focus of the book is on blogging for businesses, the elements it presents are not limited to the business world. As a matter of fact, there at times throughout the book that you forget about the title of the book and get sunk into it due to the usefulness of the knowledge the authors share from their experience.

The framework Byron and Broback offer makes perfect sense, taking the reader through a natural progression to make sure the resulting blog is a success. From determining the focus of the blog, how much to write and how to design and implement it; to getting down to the task of posting, getting traffic and monitoring it, the book is thorough in spite of the fact of being less than 200 pages in length.

So, if you are considering to start a blog for your business, do yourself a favor and read this book before. I suspect you will thank me for it!

The book is available for purchase in Kindle format but it is available for free either by joining Safari where it is available as compiled HTML.

But best of all the entire contents have been made available free of charge with no registration required here:

www.ss7-training.net

I made the decision to provide the book free to help support the SS7 training that I do; I can now point candidates at the book online and ask them to skim read it before any training is provided. This has worked extremely well.

This book covers everything in SS7 including TCAP, AIN, & ANSI. It is a great read and easy to understand if you have a working knowledge of the protocols.
To follow on after reading this book I would recommend Lee's training course, Lee not only covers the topic's in his book, he applies his expertise and real world knowledge for you to learn from. A great book to have if you are in the telecommunications industry.

I agree with all the positive comments on this book. It's really great. But there are *many* typos on the book. Sometimes, the typos can make it more difficult to understand the matter. Like when calling and called are interchanged. But I recommend the purchase of this book.

An excellent tutorial and reference tool for SS7

This is an excellent tutorial and reference book for the Signaling System No.7 (SS7/C7).It is the same useful both for those that have no previous knowledge and/or exposure of SS7 and those that have already some experience or knowledge in it.I already had some elementary theoretical knowledge and some working experience in SS7 softstacks and simulators but this book gave me a thorough and complete information step by step to the different stack layers, functions of each, message structure traversing each as well as a clear and consise overview of the PSTN network, the GSM network and the Sigtran protocol. Sigtran of course is not the main focus of this book so it is covered briefly but in a sufficient degree in one chapter. Those who are interested in a deeper study of Sigtran can read the recommended references by the author.
Some minor mistakes mostly typos that are counted to the fingers of both hands may be forgiven for a book of almost 700 pages covering such a complicated technical subject as the SS7 Signaling System, which gives such a detailed, elaborated and beautifully structured knowledge useful and digestible even for the most unfamiliar reader.
Also, unlike someone's assumptions that since the book is published by Cisco Press it would give Cisco point of view and solutions description for SS7, it is not the case.It is cleverly written as a no-vendor technical tutorial in SS7, based exclusively in the standard bodies specifications (ITU-T, ETSI, ANSI etc) as well as in various no-vendor reference sources (more than 150 in number). To this the authors vast experience in SS7 apparently contributes greatly.
Consequently, a future work on SS7 that we would greatly welcome is a book of how to program in SS7, install SS7 hardware and configure an SS7 network.
