This definitely is a timely book with very valuable and insightful information given the current very tragic situation in the island shared by the two republics. Cambeira's intelligent focus and keen interpretation of the island's development in every sense helped me better understand especially the Dominican culture that most of us know so little about. I am sure many readers who are curious about Caribbean cultures will find this work extremely informative.
I also recommend this writer's new novel Azucar! The Story of Sugar.

This particular book by Professor Cambeira is truly a jewel in terms of its historical and cultural content and its unique treatment. Unlike any other book of this kind that I have read for its clarity in presentation. This is not your ordinary history textbook, but rather a highly personalized and lucid and informed interpretation of a community's evolution. I like how the Professor, who is Dominican, convinces the reader of his honesty. He says what many other Dominican writers don't say about our country, especially concerning certain questions of identity and the notion of inclusion in the formation of what we call dominicanidad. I also like the way Cambeira's writing style flows so gracefully. His nonfiction style is like his lyrical fiction that I found in his novels Azucar! The Story of Sugar and the sequel Azucar's Sweet Hope...Her Story Continues.

Cambeira is a wonderful writer in every sense.

High Recommended Reading.

His latest novel Azucar's Sweet Hope...Her Story Continues is the Best Novel I've read in a long time !

I am very impressed by this unusual perspective on Dominican history and culture by the Dominican writer Alan Cambeira. Cambeira's work is not your conventional history text. It reads more like an interest sustaining novel; It also presents some cultural aspects most writers on the subject usually omit or avoid altogether. I also found a surprising side issue: the theatrical version of Mario Vargas Llosa's La Fiesta Del Chivo (The Festival of the Goat) is in production by the well respected Repertorio Espanol and has an accompanying Study Guide done by Iliana Fuentes. I see that Ms Fuentes also lists Cambeira's book as a part of the suggested reading in this regard. To me, then, Cambeira has a winner. His book is definitely worth the read. ...

Bravo Cambeira!

Everybody called Quisqueya the "Athens of the New World".
It is a country with beautiful beaches and beautiful people and a complex history. The island's ethnic mix of indigenuous, European (mainly Spanish) and African cultures and their merger across time resulted in the distinctive Dominican culture that we know today. Cambeira's passion for his native island is evident on every page. This book gave me a really different and fresh perspective from other books on the subject by other authors that I have read. This is an excellent personal interpretation that I'm recommending to anyone interested in learning about the Atena del Nuevo Mundo. Thanks to the Author. My next reading will certainly be his novel that everybody is talking about: Azucar! The Story of Sugar.

This was just something I found while looking for the Bernard Fall book Street without Joy. Miller's co-author wrote the forward for the book. They guy was somewhere in Miller's chain of command well after Vietnam and was an Army Captain. He mentioned that Miller told a great story. I read the book and Captain Kureth is RIGHT. This is a short book, and is just a set of stories, mostly chronological, but not a complete beginning to end story of Miller's 6 years in Vietnam. Miller LOVED Vietnam, he was in the Army and Vietnam was the place that he had the most respect and job satisfaction. He was only a Staff Sergeant when he earned the MOH. He mentioned that Colonels knew his name, but in the states (prior to the MOH), he would have just been some Sergeant. I highly recommend this book for anyone who even LIKES war stories, wants to know what Vietnam was like, or likes history. I picked this up at the Wichita Public Library.

A hero tells it his way

The Vietnam War produced some of the greatest, yet unsung, heroes in American history, Franklin "Doug" Miller was one of them. This book is not so much an autobiography as it is an oral reflection that makes you feel that you are there as he tells his story, with Miller moving to topic to topic as it occurs to him. And what a great story it is. Miller is sometimes vague on details, not going into how he went from being a PFC in a line company to being assigned to Special Forces. Miller's first combat experience was truly unique, more like a company of mountain men in the far west fighting the Blackfeet than a modern army that we think of in Vietnam. "We're going to go across the river and attack a village, do you want to go along?" His platoon sgt asks.

The book's relaxed style does not distrack from the horrors that combat can be and the titled sub-chapters such as-Silver Star, or Bronze Star are helpful as the reader is fully informed on what actions the author was decorated for. It becomes apparent that decorations in Special Forces were hard to come by. The authors discribe day to day life in the S.O.G. unit and provides some insight into the legendary "Mad-Dog" Shirver. The action in which SSGT Miller earned the Medal Of Honor is told in edge of your seat intensity-I wasn't sure if he would come out alive, even though he was telling the story! It's a story that goes from bad, to worse, to hopeless, to acceptance that all's lost.

After nearly six years in the combat zone Miller starts to get a little battle rattled and is sent home. Forunatly the army helped him recover and as a Sergeant Major became an inspiration to a new generation of soldiers. "Doug" Miller became a Special Forces legend, he deserves to be an American legend. I'm glad that his story has been told.

Best military book I have read so far

This book is phenomenal. I have been interested in military history, tradition, battles, operations, and training since I was a young kid and have read many books about this genre. I have to say that this one was the best I have read so far. Frank Miller's adventures are beyond compare. Miller often had luck on his side, but what really mattered was that he was good at gathering intelligence and killing the enemy. He didn't enjoy killing, but he understood that it was either him or them and he did what he had to do without dwelling on it.

This book puts you right on the battlefront and makes you feel part of the brotherhood and loyalty that men share when confronted with life and death. There are many humorous stories scattered in the book of more relaxing times away from battle which Miller shares.

I have to give much praise to the author, Elwood Kureth, because he was able to write about Miller's exploits in a way that really made you identify with Frank Miller. A very well written book and very entertaining.

Don't start this book if you have to wake up early.

I'm not opposed to all wars but I was very much against our involvement in Vietnam. I thought then and still think that we should have been helping the other side. I bought this book wanting to hear what combat was like there from a special forces soldier. Fortunately, the book didn't get into the politics but simply told about his life and job, which was to collect intelligence and kill the enemy. His bravery and what he went through is mind boggeling and the descripions of battles are riviting. I stayed up way past my bedtime reading it.

VERY difficult to put down once you start reading it!

WOW, this is one of the most gripping and moving accounts of personal combat and experiences in Vietnam that I have ever read. I had great difficulty putting this gem down, as it is directly related in first-person and the author does a magnificent job of making you feel as if you're right there alongside the subject of the book (Franklin Miller).

Nothing is held back, and if you've ever served in the military, you'll fall right into step with the narration. Everything is presented in all its gory detail, so if you're a little squeamish, you might want to skim across a few sections. The ending is particularly heart-wrenching, especially the afterword by the author's widow.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the up-close and personal views of combat in Vietnam.

This book is a tremendous benefit to anyone meeting outside institutional Christianity as well as those who are interested in an alternative form of church. From my experience, the common ground that often holds Christians together who meet outside the traditional church is the understanding of what church IS NOT. I thought "Pagan Christianity" was a great book in explaining what church IS NOT. However, this book lays out the biblical and spiritual principles that show us what church IS. It shows the wonderful reality of the ekklesia of God, the reason for the church, and how it is central to God's eternal purpose. My hope is that every Christian who meets outside the traditional church structure would read this book, and every Christian who is interested in an alternative way of doing church would read it as well.

Frank takes us on a journey starting with the community within the Godhead and unveils the Passion of God concerning His purpose of having a church that visibly displays His nature and presence. Frank shows us the conventional way of meeting is not envisioned in scripture, nor can that way(the institutional church service etc) fully express God's eternal purpose. He unfolds another way, an organic way that is based out from scripture dealing with practical insights of how we meet, why we meet, to whom we meet all leading to express Christ's Headship (without rivalry) within a local gathering. This book is a natural flowing sequel to Pagan Christianity challenging the reader to pursue God's purpose and centering your life in that purpose within the community of Christ. The Lord will use this book to cut a path in your heart to find His heart. And in finding His may you become a pioneer forging the way for others hungry to know His dream. Be open as you read and put aside your stained glass eyes and you won't be disappointed!

Book review - Reimagining Church

Review Date: 2008-09-25
In November of 2004 the Holy Spirit led my husband and I to leave an "Apostolic/Prophetic" church and has since not led us back into the "institutional church". Even though I was born into a ministry family and grew up in the church, I always felt spiritually unfulfilled attending any denominational church, be it Baptist, CMA, Charismatic, Pentecostal, Assemblies of God, Word of Faith, etc. All seemed to lack the New Testament reality of a "Body" functioning the way the Apostle Paul and the scriptures taught. If you have felt the same way, Frank Viola's new book, "Reimagining Church", gets to the root of the problem and shows how the "Church" is a living, breathing organism made to be in a close family relationship with the Godhead (Father, Son & Holy Spirit) and then with others, and not made to serve a separate class of clergy who are in control, taking the place of Jesus Christ as head. Spiritual gifts were not meant to be put on stage by the anointed few, but are meant to flow out of every member of the body to edify and minister to each other. Frank exposes the spirit hidden in darkness in the institutional church system which seeks to strangle the life out of believers and take the place of Jesus Christ as sole head of His Body, preventing its members from ever "being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit". (Ephesians 2:22). Way back in Genesis we read where satan (or the serpent) wanted to take the place of God and caused man's fall, but God promised then that the seed of the woman would bruise satan's "head". The enemy is still subtly seeking to take the place of Christ as Head of His Church and Frank Viola explains how the institutional church is a fertile breeding ground for that to happen. After reading "Reimagining Church" you will have a clear understanding of how the biblical New Testament Body of Christ assembled in a family style relationship and will be confronted about not doing church as usual any longer. I recommend this book for every member in the Body of Christ, especially all those who see themselves as part of the "five-fold". You will be challenged! -- and you will never see the beauty of Christ's Body manifested sitting in a pew Sunday after Sunday.

Christians are leaving organized religion in droves. They are not leaving because they are falling away from Christ. They are leaving because they want more of Christ! But where are they going? Some end up in desperate isolation for years. Others end up returning to the church system they left. Still others search for a first century style organic expression of the church.

Because most Christians have never experienced organic church life, they have no point of reference from which to begin. So they end up reproducing the institutional church in a living room. They basically come full circle and end up back in the institutionalism but call it a "house church."

Frank Viola and George Barna wrote a book titled "Pagan Christianity" and it was published earlier this year. This work pointed out where and how many of our church practices came into being. This book is opening many people's eyes to the fact that most of what happens in the traditional church system is just not scriptural.

A new book written by Frank Viola was just released as a "sequel" to "Pagan Christianity." It is called "Reimagining Church". This book very skillfully addresses the problems that are exposed in "Pagan Christianity."

It answers the major question of: "Okay, so you have left the institutional church . . . now what?"

Frank is qualified to answer this question for two reasons. First, he is an excellent bible teacher and brings to light what God's answer is to the question. Second, Frank has been living in and planting organic churches for twenty years.

So perhaps you are considering leaving the institutional church. Or maybe you are one of those who have already left. Do you want some form of church that is squarely based on the tenets of scripture? Are you looking for freedom to function as a member of His Body? Are you looking for Christ Himself to be the center, life, and head of the church?

If you have answered "yes" to these questions, then "Reimagining Church" is definitely for you. And if you have not already read "Pagan Christianity," you will want to read that one as well.

Apricot Rice Salad, Watermelon Salsa, new fashion Cabbage Rolls plus a few concotions with burbon that you haven't thought of yet, its all in here. The author treats the reader with a small story about how the recipie came about, that reads like a book. All in all, the cookbook is delightful and the recipies will be your new old favorites. I have family on the west coast that I'm buying another copy to give to them, the recipies are delicious and so are the stories of how they got concocted. The author trained in france but this is her honest to goodness southern recipies, with a twist that makes them new again. Delightful.

As a southerner straddling the geographical Mason Dixon line, good southern food is not something found in excess around here (but close enough I can still drive too it) This cookbook is simply delicious. The recipes are accessible and just plain fantastic, her deviled eggs are simply the best ever and her strawberry cupcakes were the biggest hit at my local church picnic. The stories accompanying the recipes make you feel like Martha's giving you the recipe while sitting next to you and fanning herself on the back porch after a big supper.
I simply adore the cookbook and have given it to several friends as gifts and they love it just as much.
If there is ONE cookbook you must have in your southern cookbook library, this is it.

This is a great book. I love to watch Keaton's movies with this to hand, it gives a whole new insight to the films. It is easy to read and it is interesting to see the sights of LA from the 20's. Sometimes it is sad to see that some of these locations are gone, where the building of freeways have necessitated the removal of whole city blocks. If I ever get to visit LA I know that this book will be going with me.

Years ago I purchased Civil War historian William A. Frassanito's excellent books "Gettysburg: A Journey in Time" and "Antietam: The Photographic Legacy of America's Bloodiest Day," which examine and compare historic and modern photographs of these famous battle sites. John Bengtson has done essentially the same thing for Hollywood using Keaton's films, and the result is nothing short of miraculous. Here are scenes of what used to be but are no more, resurrected with the benefit of Bengtson's keen eye, detective-like mind, and obsessive attention to detail. This is one heck of a fun book, and you'll spend many hours going over the photographs.

Amazingly, many of the scenic backdrops that Keaton used in his films still exist, and they serve today as nostalgic reminders of a relatively primitive and innocent time that has all but disappeared.

Wow...

This is a truly different kind of book. We get to see the locations that Buster made his films, and how they have changed through time. We also get to see how the author went about finding these places, a kind of historical research that takes a tremendous amount of time and effort.

This book is one that I automatically pick up when I'm not sure what I want to read, but want something interesting.

If there was a complaint, it would be that many of the pictures and some of the text is really too small. I have great eyesight, some of this is too hard for even me to see, and I know many people have a harder time with small text and pictures. Lay off of our eyesight, eh?

Still, a totally fascinating book. I can't get enough.

Even if you live a continent away in Washington state, "The Soprano State" will amuse, educate and yes, horrify you. Authors Bob Ingle and Sandy McClure have put together an appalling catalog of the "worst of the worst" New Jersey politicians and public servants and their most outrageous shenanigans.
As the authors note, "why should such a wealth of lunacy and depravity" be enjoyed only by New Jersey? My personal favorite, in a chapter titled "All Aboard the Gravy Train," is an anecdote about how sometimes "the legislative gravy train delivers real gravy." In that case, New Jersey taxpayers coughed up $124,000 over three years to purchase 300 lunches each day the Legislature was in session to feed 80 members of the assembly, 40 senators _ and lobbyists. The lunches were trucked in from a well-connected restaurant 57 miles away!
¶ It's tempting for us outsiders to feel smug, but there's also a nagging worry: what if our politicians are just less obviously outrageous, and our reporters more lapdog and less pit bull?
¶ Beyond the entertainment value, this book is a cautionary tale, reminding us that citizens anywhere can be fleeced by those we elect.

somewhat of a lark. After devouring the material it was
no longer a lark. The pathetic corruption is so clearly
detailed and documented it makes your head spin. The New Jersey I left in 1974 had an outstanding public school system which has been decimated by the lads in Trenton,
draining resources from small school districts and pumping
those funds into inner-city enviroments. No measurable
improvement is to be found. the State is bankrupt,under-
funded pensions and corrupt at every level of government.

This book is everything that you ever needed to know about a sugar glider! I am thinking about buying a glider and after reading this book i still do. It will be difficult, especially since it is nocturnal, but i bet anyone who tries can.
This book says the nutritional needs and even a few mixes. It says EXCACTLY what you need if you're a new owner.

Outdated, But An OK Place to Start

There is some information in this book that is outdated, particularly the part dealing with Sugar Glider nutrition. We know a lot more about the nutritional needs of Sugar Gliders than we did when this book was published in 1997. For example, MacPherson suggests it is fine to feed cat food to Sugar Gliders. That idea has been debunked for some time.

It's an OK book to start with if you know absolutely nothing about Sugar Gliders. And it's only good because no new books with updated Sugar Glider information have been published recently. There is, however, a ton of solid, up-to-date information about Sugar Gliders available on the internet.

Maybe it's because I am from Fort Worth, and I consider myself to be an AMATEUR local historian; however, I just could not put this book down! I read the entire thing in one night, because I couldn't stop. The story is gripping...makes you laugh, makes you cry. This should definately be made into a movie, if it isn't being done already.

Occasionally I'll drive by the Masonic Home and imagine it in all its football glory.

An Entire Home of Mighty Orphans

Wonderful book, there were more than just twelve mighty orphans! The entire home was fullof mighty orphans, all overcoming the death of their parents in one way or another. I played football against the Masonic Home Mighty Mites in the 80's, they were still a tough bunch of kids when we played them. I remember my father telling me about the tough and mean team they were sporting in the fifties, so this kind of hit home for me. I personally could not put the book down once I started reading it. If you like high school football in Texas this is a must read!

Really good book even if you are not a football fan.

I was at Baylor when Doak Walker starred for SMU. I am glad to learn much from this book about the reasons for Doak's success.

The book shows what one man can do to change the lives of others by learning to use what he has to the best of his--and their--abilities.

The book was fantastic. I had no idea that the Masonic Home was so tough. Miller, Cecil and Dot were my grandmother's sisters children. I knew about their situation when I was growing up but I had never even thought that Miller and Cecil were on one of the best highschool football teams ever.
It was so interesting that I read the whole book in the space of 2 days.

An intelligent book, not the ravings of another raw foodist zealot

Right now, health officials that directly control the physical condition of most of our population make their decisions based on data bought and paid for by agribusiness, or data that is a century old. Everyone in such positions, both in the FDA, CDC, USDA & state regulatory boards, is morally beholden to read this book and to understand the truth.

Of course, they won't, and it will continue to be easier to buy crack cocaine in the USA than it is to purchase the most perfect and complete food available to man. At least Schmid's writing will empower those of us who do understand what controls the food supply to argue intelligently in favor of raw dairy, and to spread enlightenment in our small spheres.

Author should be on Oprah and is Person of the Year.

This book will be the foundation to a world of politics and potential that you probably didn't have a hunch existed in the realm of food science and politics, especially with a food so fundamental as dairy and a subject so fundamental as food!

I have purchased many copies of this book, and I read it over for pragmatic and enjoyment purposes. The author has a clean, but interesting style that will help you see through any dogma about to cook, or not to cook your dairy; and who is taking away one of those options from you.

I certainly hope you'll be able to get your hands on some of the right raw dairy that works for you, after reading this book!

The wealth of information in this book more than makes up for a little bit of disorganization at times and some typos.

In a nutshell, it encapsulates the history of milk production in this country and re-visits all significant studies about the health properties of milk to show unequivocally that certified, clean raw milk is what we all NEED to be drinking, not the pasteurized stuff that destroys enzymes that are very important for human health.

Many alternative health remedies these days recommend to not drink dairy. The reason is that PASTEURIZED dairy contribues to chronic health problems, while RAW dairy helps fix them due to its enzyme and probiotic bacteria content. The two products are not really even comparable from a health standpoint, though both are called milk and both are white liquid.

This message needs to get out. Certified raw milk is not dangerous. Buy the book. Loan it to your friends. Pressure your local government to allow raw milk sales and allow people the choice and opportunity to become healthier.

Schmid very carefully tells the history of milk and once you are informed you will be sickened by current "legal" dairy practices. If you have ever driven by large dairies (especially in Idaho) and inhaled the stink of confined cows and observed the mud and filth they live in this book is a must read. Rock on "Real Milk".
