Yes, Greg Mortenson has an admirable mission. The Central Asia Institute is wonderful and lovely and education for impoverished children is an important and worthy cause. All the more reason that Mr Mortenson's story should be told well, don't you agree?

I would remind all the reviewers who gush about this book that this page is for reviewing the book 'Three Cups of Tea', not the organization for whose benefit it was written. And while there are few of us who would give Mr Mortenson and the Institute anything but 5 stars, 'Three Cups of Tea', sadly, does not measure up as a novel. Oops, I mean as a work of serious non-fiction. An honest mistake, when at every overworked phrasing, lurid description, infelicitous punctuation, or unashamed idolization of Mr Mortenson I wondered whether I was reading a professional, journalistic account or a very long fan-fiction. A book such as this, or, indeed, any book, cannot stand on the merits of the cause it champions; it must needs be worth reading in itself, or it does a disservice to that very cause.

The story of what a dedicated individual with sound ideas and beliefs can accomplish by staying free of government influence and funding, told to the reader in compelling prose. Greg Mortenson's story is changing the hearts and minds of people all around the globe.

Besides the extremely informative narration about some local events building up to 9/11 and after within Pakistan and Afghanistan, this is a great read on a subject I wouldn't have normally picked up off of a book stand. (I read it for my book club.) It makes the story of the people in this neglected area very personal and meaningful as seen through the eyes of a Westerner who was not afraid to get involved. If you're American and don't read this book, you will be missing something great.

One of the best and most timely books I've ever read. Besides being a good read, I learned so much about the Middle East. I am 70 years old and my 16 year old grandson loved the book as much as I did. He's a mountain climber!!

What a great book. To really enhance and visualize the terrain watch the Planet Earth session on mountains. An uplifting example of a grassroots movement that can make a terrific impact and the power and dedication of one person. A wonderful read, and a cause to get behind. I've since bought 5 more copies for friends. No wonder it has been on the #1 stop in the NY Times for so long!!!

You would be surprised to see how our government is screwing us so bad and how they spend our hard earned money. Or maybe you wouldn't be surprised. This is a great book.

So what is a nut like me supposed to do come this Fall? If my 1988 Ron Paul for President bumper sticker judiciously placed upon my 1986 Renault Encore worked by way of putting Ron Paul in the White House in 1989, then maybe now I could be reviewing the book of Dr. Paul's presidential memoirs rather than ruminating on federal government grandiosity more convoluted than this sentence. From page 37 & 38: ...with our 700 [military] bases around the world...including troops in 130 countries..."With a $9 trillion debt, perhaps $50 trillion in entitlement liabilites, and the dollar in free fall, how much longer can we afford..." [my words coming up] to keep going as an intact nation? Paraphrased from pages 79 & 80: If we abolished the personal income tax now, our federal government budget would have to return to the levels of... 1997! Shriek, run! Not that, anything but that! If you have children, and you plan to vote for either Sen. Obama (even if he is almost too conservative for you), or Sen. McCain (even if he is almost too liberal for you), please [at a minimum] read pages 133 & 134 and see what the government has in store for your kids (brainwashing never looked so good). So much of what passes for government is most likely unconstitutional, even if I do take a fancy to those interstate highways.

Ron Paul's book is a short, simple read; but so is the catastrophe section of the newspaper. Read it to challenge yourself to explore what true freedom and responsibility entail. The other two guys will keep their feet firmly on the accelerator with our big bus aimed right at the cliff.

If only Mr. Paul would stick to the basics as stated in this book and realize that change is a process that happens slowly, especially with regard to foreign policy and national security, he might have gotten further in politics.

The book itself is an excellent read and a keen look at where we came from constitutionally with a warning to those complacent enough to put their faith in government control of their lives.

Ron Paul once again shows why he should be, but won't be president. Too much common sense.

I expected this title to be more of a statement of what Republicans that want a return to Constitutional government and fiscal responsibility would need to do to return the country to those values. Certainly, many of those ideas are in this book, but the book is more a picture of Ron Paul's campaign experiences, and responses to the issues.

In those responses, explanations and essays on the issues, it becomes clear what those that have the same value system would need to do. Dr. Paul does call for some action on these topics and explains succinctly why.

I enjoyed reading his views and responses to many of his campaign challengers and situations. I also enjoyed the forays into our history that explain how some of these situations have come about.

This is a wonderful book about an unbelievable champion - the kind we need today in America. A champion that reaches into the hearts of the people, unifies us and inspires us to prevail. The men who believed in Seabiscuit were not perfect, nor was Seabiscuit but they all managed to be imperfect winners. The writing itself might be a bit flourished but it is certainly well-researched and the story is entertaining told. Hillebrand has captured the ironies, truths, the agony and ecstasy of horse-racing and life itself as well. This one will make you cheer.

I'm usually concerned about purchasing items on line, especially books. I can honestly say that this experience was worth it. I would recommend this seller to anyone interested in purchasing good quality books at extremely reasonable prices.

I can't recall the number of non-fiction books that I've read. Little matter, this is the most incredible true story that I've read!!
Laura Hillenbrand has captured a time in American History. She is a true storyteller who has done impeccable research. It must have been the time she spent in Gambier, Ohio at Kenyon College that inspired her to such great in depth writing.
For those of you who have not read this book or have not seen the excellent movie, you're in for an incredible treat. Trust Me!!
If I were writing fiction, this true story would not have been told. Charles Howard, Red Pollard and Tom Smith are indeed the Holy Trinity. Remember these names, after reading this book, you will never forget them.
One little horse, so much history!!! Incredible!!!!

I have recently read Seabiscuit and watched the film and found both to be very compelling. We dont think much anymore about the dark days of the Depression but Laura Hillenbrand puts us right back in the middle of it. The important lesson was to look to the future as Charles Howard implored, the sun will come up tomorrow.

Three incredible characters intersect with this horse of unknown promise. Howard is the wealthy owner, despondent over the death of his son and unsure how to live the life of leisure; Red Pollard is a jockey not able to break into the big-time, due to his attitude, blindness, and injuries; Tom Smith is a taciturn man who belongs in the 19th century of his youth, not the modern world. Together they develop and promote Seabiscuit, a horse of incredible bloodlines, yet given up on by better trainers due to his work habits, attitude, injuries, and size.

Eventually the Biscuit wins all the stakes in the state of California and gets a shot at a match race with the great Eastern horse and Triple Crown winner, War Admiral. Both horses are descendants of the great Man'o'war, but the eastern elites dont want to give the western upstart his chance. After a few cancellations due to injuries and prickly owners, the match race goes off in Baltimore and the smaller horse brings it home.

The book is more enlighting with respect to the fuller stories of the characters, especially the relationship between the jockeys and Pollard's romance and marriage to a Boston nurse. The movie brings the times to life. Howard and Pollard were the raconteurs who made Seabiscuit the hero of the little guys during those lean years. Dont forget, tough times dont last but tough guys do.

Ms. Hillenbrand is an equally interesting story. She suffers from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and is only able to work at a fraction of the typical writer. Here she focused her energy on this story and these times. Seabiscuit has been the story many times in film and books but Ms. Hillenbrand brings it to life for us.

Seabiscuit is a great story, book, and movie. If you have not read it, buy it today and start reading. You will not be disappointed.

Having never read The Count of Monte Cristo and only faintly recalling a movie of some years ago, I was prepared for a swashbuckling epic of swordplay and derring-do. My expectations were entirely inadequate. The Count of Monte Cristo is rather a tale of revenge through the artifice of intrigue and cold calculation. Dumas creates a broken man, betrayed by a trio of duplicitous schemers, and devotes the bulk of the book to the complex machinations employed in retaliation.

The phrase "intricately detailed" does not begin to describe the plots and sub-plots which carry this classic forward. Like all novels of its period, the author relies on what the modern-day reader would consider implausible convenience. This doesn't detract from its worth. To create such a tightly-laced weave, some liberties must be granted. The reader gladly forgives Messr. Dumas.

On par with The Brothers Karamazov, Anna Karenina, and the works of James Fenimore Cooper, The Count of Monte Cristo is wonderfully thick and magisterially constructed. Set primarily among the preening social elite of post-Napoleanic Paris, yet ranging from Rome to Normandy, it is a 5-star reading experience.

NOTE: I really hate that Amazon includes reviews from several editions of the same book under one heading. Some editions are abridged for this novel, and that truly is an injustice and the reviews show that. The Oxford Classics version - which I read - is an UNABRIDGED version, and my review is based on that.

This story revolves around Edmond Dantes, a young man who seemingly has everything going for him. His employer has much regard for him and is about to put him as captain of his own ship, he is about to marry the woman he loves, all is right in Dantes world. Unfortunately, this type of happiness and success breeds jealousy and envy, and Dantes finds himselft falsely accused and imprisoned. He does escape, and therein the true tale begins.

The story weaves back and forth and entangles lives - but central is the thirst for revenge. Dumas certainly has a way of telling a story, even a long one, and keeping it interesting a fresh. There are twists and turns and an entire host of interesting characters. One moment I found myself cheering for Dantes and the next I was hoping he wouldn't do what I thought he would. However, one can never be too sure of what might happen next or where the story might go.

I had put off reading this novel because of the length for so long, and I now regret having done that. Although the tale of revenge is an old one, Dumas has managed to weave a story filled with mystery, adventure, and excitement with just a touch of romance - what more could a reader possibly want?

I saw the recent movie, (The Count of Monte Cristo - 2002, staring - James Caviezel) and loved it so much, I ordered the book, and this is the version I choose. Unfortunately, this is the first book I've ever read that the movie is actually better! The abridged version is so limited it misses the very crucial points in this wonderful insightful story. If you're an adult I suggest reading an unabridged version in order to get the profound message this book addresses.

I bought this book for one of my children for a summer reading project. I needed a specific version and was glad I could search Amazon by ISBN. The book arrived quickly and the price was reasonable. I'm sure other family members will enjoy the book when the projcet is complete.

What a summer ride I've been on reading Lonesome Dove. I don't know where I've been the last 15 years to only now discover this absolutely amazing story. I smiled, laughed, and cried my way through it. I will surely miss the Hat Creek Cattle boys keeping me up at night. What an adventure!

It took me several attempts after several years to get through the first chapter -- don't ask -- but I am so grateful I persisted. What a wonderful book and great masterpiece. Simply satifying on every level. What a joy!

I wish I could have given this grossly over rated book zero stars. Even one star is being too kind. Having heard so much, I felt totally let down. Lack of development of characters, slow pace, no excitement. Come on, when we read a western we want a John Wayne kind of a western. Good story, emotions, actions. Want to read westerns? Try finding the SUDDEN series. Now thats what was required. What we are handed out is trash. Do yourself a favour. Avoid at all costs.

This novel is like the Rio Grande river, where the story begins: Long, wide, but only a few feet deep.

I read almost 400 pages, waiting to be gripped, but then I gave up and rented the miniseries on DVD instead. It's terrific -- four stars!

The next time I want to read a Western, I'll get a Louis L'Amour. Fun, well-written, packs a punch, and done in two days.

I need the book-equivalent of methadone to wean myself off the the genius that is Lonesome Dove.

Left to Tell is a powerful story of one womens tragedies and survival experienced during the Genocide in Rwanda. This book brought tears and joy to my heart; it inspired me to know that through any horrible and life threatening experience a belief and faith in God will transcend all atrocities man will commit. It is also about how forgiveness can calm and soothe the soul so life can move on with peace in your heart.

I think this is an excellent book, I could not put it down. I ended up reading till 3 in the morning.

I had never heard of Immaculee Ilibagiza before I picked this book up in my local book store. I bought it after reading the back cover and I will never look at life the same again. Immaculee's ability to forgive is something we all should strive for; however, I think none will find the ability within themselves. It can only come from God, just like Immaculee's did. This book will make you cry, it will make you smile but most of all it will make you discard those petty little things that used to irritate you. I will keep this book and will probably read it again and again.

This book was truly life changing for me. When I find myself sweating the little things in life (i.e bills, pregnancy woes, hot weather)I remember Immaculee holed up in this tiny bathroom just praying and pleading for her life. She painted such a horrific picture I simply cannot forget. The killers were calling her name! What a humbling and amazing story she has to tell I literally could not put this book down..at the same time I was educated about how the Rwandan Holocaust all came to be..I had no idea what these poor people went through, the Hutus and the Tutsis became real to me. Who would have thought something like this still happens but this was just the 90's. In the beginning of her book, I smiled through tears as she described the tight knit Catholic family she was reared in--how strong and wise her daddy was, how much she loved her brothers with everything in her being, and how her mother was there until the end to protect her "babies". I was fortunate a few weeks after reading her book to see Immaculee speak at a local venue in Dallas. She was beautiful in person and her joy could light up an entire room. She was filled with the Holy Spirit and it was obvious how humbled she has been. I just kept thinking this woman has lost her entire extended family and she even had the grace to forgive those who killed her own. Forgiveness is the message I took from the book. Life is too short to carry the burden of not forgiving others who we think have wronged us. Excellent read with a message that will keep you thinking long after you read the book!!

I started reading this book before bed, big mistake on my part. I stayed up entranced by this book and continued reading until I couldn't stay awake. The first thing I did the next morning was pick this book back up and finished it. (Which only took a half hour)

I am absolutely amazed at Immaculee's ability to maintain her connection with God while surrounded by such hate. Immaculee shares her story of how she not only survived the Rwandan Holocaust, but how she forgave the killers of her family. This is an inspiring book which confirms how great humans really can be.

I hope this is the right book, I just love the story, and the music, and the movie too!

The book is fantastic! Great pictures! I would highly recommend this book for any fan of the movie or a Titanic fan in general! The making of the epic movie is something to see and you can definitely see it in this book.

This is a MUST have for any Titanic collector. I waited for about 9 or so years for this book and I am so extatic that I finally have it!!

The scope of this majestic book truly befits the epic effort by James Cameron with his cinematic masterpiece "Titanic". Much great information here for the movie buff who likes to see how it is done. Incredible sets including the dining salon, complete even to dishes and decor. I was amazed to see how this particular set was pulled underwater by hydraulics to provide a very realistic feeling of sinking. Page after page of photographs and stories about the magnificent sets that brought this film to life. Lots of info about the stars and other cast members as well the production crew. This book is a perfect companion to the movie as well as a testament to the filmmaking genius of James Cameron.

This is a big and detailed book, not for the faint of heart. But, if you love history and/or politics, this is a book for you. Truman was an unlikely president and this book captures the man's personality, humility, and dignity. Carefully researched and described, the book opens the door to one of our nation's most unique and dinstinguished characters. An epic book about an epic man. Delightful.

I couldn't have been more pleased with this book. I love David McCullough and he never ceases to amaze you with this intimate portrayal of Harry Truman's life. He brings the President to the level of an average man who finds himself in an above-average position. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an in-depth look at one of our most interesting Presidents to-date.

I have to agree with a previous reviewer: upon reading this, I have such a desire to meet and converse with HST--that's how interesting and honorable he was.

As always, McCullough's narrative sweep is impressive. Truman as a lonely and bookish boy, Truman as a soldier, Truman as a failed businessman are the most interesting parts. When it comes to Truman's presidency, McCullough turns up little new grounds, however. It's the usual conventional wisdom about a guy who made tough decisions that turned out right. Read Perrett's "Commander in Chief" for a harsher and more surprising evaluation of Truman's decision-making and his monumental blunders.

The book itself was a winner - a gift for my husband. He "devoured" it. The only disappointment was how cheaply and poorly-bound the paperback was. Even with extreme care, it fell apart within the first 70 pages. The replacement nearly made it to the end, but not quite. Buy and read this book, but go for a better-bound version unless you like handling it in pieces.

I have read most of McCullough's books, and so I knew that after reading this I would understand Harry S. Truman more deeply than I ever had. What I didn't know what was that I would learn so much about 20th century American history. McCullough is a great story-teller. His use of historical details to recreate the man and the times is magnificent. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

As always Simon Singn takes the reader on a fantastic trip through History. Filled with entertaining stories, puzzles and heroic events, the author skillfully covers the history of secret writing. If you liked his coverage of Fermat's Enigma then you will definitely enjoy this book.

The prose is capturing, deep enough to fascinate technical readers and light enough to just entertain the casual reader. I specialized in Quantum computers while studying Mathematics and I am astonished that the author manages to explain such non-trivial subjects as quantum computers and cryptography to the degree where ordinary readers can actually understand how they work and their impact on ciphers such as RSA/DSA. In short another great read from one of the best and most entertaining technical writers who ever lived.

Simon Singh books usually hold you from the first page and till the end. "The code book" is very well written and very informative. You will see how it's started and where cryptography goes, but even more interesting part of history of cryptography - life (sometimes secret life) of people who worked and continue to work on development of cryptosystems.

Nutshell review - This is an excellent book covering the history of cryptography up to present day and into the near future. Very well written, easy to understand and worth reading by any layperson interested in the topic.

If you want to know about codes, secrets, cryptography and cryptanalysis then this is the book. Simon Singh presents the history of codes in a clear and simple way. Without the mathematics to disturb the flow of the story, you enjoy plots, conspiracies, secrets and algorithms. Excellent for general knowledge and for an introductory text in cryptanalysis. Buy it!

This is one of my favorite books of all time. This was the book that got be hooked on historical fiction, and although the cover (imo) does the book an injustice (making the novel look old and boring), this is a wonderful read. Katherine Swynford and John of Gaunt are flesh-and-blood characters, leaping off the page to bring you along in a 14th century adventure.

If you have any interest in the 1300s, Chaucer, English history, or even just romance stories, I think you'll like this.

This was the first "romance" novel I ever read. I must have been 10 or 11 at the time. Since then I have read countless historical novels but this one is still my favorite. I just finished re-reading it and I was as enthralled now as I was years ago. If you enjoy good historical fiction (Philipa Gregory, Diana Gabaldon, Sharon Kay Penman), you will enjoy this book.

Katherine makes me want to drink ale. There is breakfast ale. There is ale as remedy for a wan complexion. Ale for lunch, dinner...good ale, poor ale, everyone drinks it! I bought Katherine on recommendation from so many reviewers here who loved it. And I agree that it is a fantastic book, transporting me back to the medieval times of Katherine Swynford, John of Gaunt and Geoffrey Chaucer. I have now become a student of medieval British history, thanks to Anya Seton's books, which contain adventure, love affairs, wars, magic, religion. I am addicted, and Katherine did not disappoint; I love Ms. Seton's writing style and attention to detail. I loved Katherine and the depiction of "a woman's lot" in these troubled times. I hurt for her when she was a teenaged bride, forced to marry a rough brute whom she could never love. Yet, unlike another reviewer who found Hugh Swynford's character unsympathetic, I did come to have compassion for him. Yes he was loathsome, yes he was selfish and abusive. Yet Ms. Seton somehow dredged a grudging sympathy for him out of me. She wouldn't allow him to be a total villain. I also understood Katherine's need for penance for her affair with the duke; I found stunning parallels to my own life experiences in this. Overall this was an entertaining, beautifully told tale of triumph over tragedy.

I first read this book about 25 years ago. Recently a friend discussed how she just loved the story, and that's what stirred me to find the book again. The choice of Dante Rosetti's painting, Veronica Veronese, for the cover image of the latest edition is wonderful.

Anya Seton was gifted at her crafting of words. Often I find myself rereading sentences that seem unusual and beautiful. It's an enjoyable way to travel back in time. Reading a history book can be interesting, but an historical novel puts a face and character to the names that usually get only a brief mention.

I am an avid avid reader, especially about English Historical Fiction. I just finished this book,,,and of all the amazing authors I have read, including Phillipa Gregory and Margaret George, Anya Seton has taken first place in quality historical fiction. Here attention to detail and her development of 3 dimensional characters is unsurpased and I was torn between rushing through the book..and yet reading it slowly to savor it like an amazing piece of cake. This was the first book of hers I've read and I intend to read all of them!!!
