Another thought provoking book by Daniel QuinnReview Date: 2006-12-12
The book arrived and I read it about 2 minutes. It is mostly pictures, illustrated by DQ himself, with just a sentence or two on each page. At the end I was left scratching my head wondering, what did I just read? I have read it a number of times since then and love the depth and richness in the simple story. It can be interpreted a number of different ways.
I've shared this book with a number of fellow MBA in Sustainable Business grad students at Bainbridge Graduate Institute. Their first impressions are often similar to mine and I enjoy asking them what they learned. Their replies and insights are always interesting.
Without giving it away or providing my analysis of the story, I'll just end the review with the question, "Why do we Work, Work, Work so darn much?"

A Bird's Eye View on HonorReview Date: 2002-10-13
In the story Baldy wakes one day and decides to make a new friend. So, after a brief introduction about characteristics of bald eagles, he sets off and meet's Little Tom Gopher who is being destructive.
I like the way Baldy explains to Little Tom about honor and what he does to help Little Tom. I feel children could easily relate to either of the characters.
Finally, the last chapter very fluently describes many different types of eagles. The use of adjectives and comparisons helps the reader to easily get a picture of these eagles.
This story would be an excellent resource for any character education lesson. Yet at the same time would be just as usful in a science unit. It is written on a second grade reading level but could easily be used by any child or teacher in elementary school.
This book is just one in the Feather tale Series. Each has a bird for the main character who is teaching a secondary character about some human virtue.

The blurb on the back of the book says it best:
"These are not children's tales, but rather weighty discussions with animals whose world we share. In these conversations with gopher, kangaroo rat, shrew, bat, puma and jaguar, Schaefer (author of "Shane") has elicited dialogue with these animals and brings their fears, frustrations and philosophies to light.
Land rights, for example, becomes a hot issue for the pocket gopher. In another conversation, Schaeer sat alongside a shrew while it lunched on a locust larva and complained bitterly about Aristotle. The author cautions us, 'Reading this book may be dangerous to your peace of mind.'"
Schaefer describes how he came to be able to talk with animals, emphasizing that listening is the only "trick" there is to learning what our animal friends have to tell us. The dialogues are well-written and thought-provoking, funny at times, and often also quite moving. After finishing this book, one can only agree with Schafefer that it is a shame so few of us bother to listen to the perspectives of animals. What more pressing time to do so could there be than now? Reading this book is a great beginning.
An attractive publication, nicely illustrated by Irene Brady. All naturalists and nature lovers will find this captivating reading. Recommended.
