Values: A scholarly reminder
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-09-17
This book is a scholarly review of the history of our Value System. It places our present Value System in perspective with the Values extant in the golden years of Socrates, Seneca and others and contrasts these with the Values at the Fall of the Roman Empire. The period represented by Nero seems to be a fair comparison to today. It offers some solutions to problems of our population as represented in the September 11, 2001, attack on America. The Book should be read by those serious about change in our current social system. It will be a good stimulator for group discussion.

More Than Just Folding...

This book is very well laid out. Background information on table setting, napkin etiquette, simple instructions, and large color photos make this book an excellent choice...especially for a novice like me!
The book contains not only napkin folding techniques, it gives information on various napkin fabrics, basic sizes used for each meal, napkin etiquette, information on napkin care & storage, and stain removal tips. Also, there is a page containing proper table-setting etiquette.
The book contains forty napkin folds divided into three categories; Elegance, Charm, and Whimsy. Included in the types of folds are designs for holding items such as place cards, flatware, or food (the "Duchess Crown" is photographed holding a muffin). I have practiced most all the folds and I especially enjoyed making "Sunset Sails" as well as the heart-shaped "A Little Romance" folds. My "Bread Box" fold was a little wimpy as I practiced with napkins that aren't well starched.
Instructions for the napkin folding are given in simple, easy-to-follow steps and a picture of each step is included. A large color photo of the final outcome is included. Most of the folds are done in three or four simple steps. (A few contain up to five steps whereas the "Bread Box" and "Duchess Crown" each contin seven steps).
I found this book delightful in that it was easy for the novice to use and supplied that little extra something with its tips for table setting and napkin etiquette as well as storage/care of linens. I plan to share this book with my friends who like to host dinner parties.

This is the 1948 version, wonderful. Take a trip with me to the 1950's...when people knew what manners were, and what fun they were! Some of the chapters include: men's manners, women's manners, a girl on her own, debutantes, gambling (!), 3 degrees of formality, furnishing a house, celebrations, entertaining without a maid (!), cards, and clothes. Don't leave home without it.

Over 650 pages. Highly recommended.

Joy Says Be Good When You are There

This is one of Joy Berry's "Survival Series for Kids" books and I have to confess that my son Devon and I like them all. I've had them in storage for years, way before Devon was a twinkle in my eye, or my gal Sara's, and I'm glad I saved them.

In this book Ms. Berry and illustrator Bartholomew, with your help, will tell your child why it's important to be good when they are not at home, while they are visiting, at school anyplace. It's important to be just as good at a friend's house when Mom and Dad are not there as it is when you are at home and they are watching. Though this book is for children a bit older than toddlers, my toddler and I like it just fine. Get 'em started early, that's my motto.

Though this book was written over twenty years ago, it still stands up. The excellent comic book type illustrations will keep your child interested as you read along with him or her. And for the life of me I don't know why these books are not easier to get. Joy Berry is good for children, that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. If you can get a hold of her books and share them with your child, you'll both be better for it.

In this book Ms. Berry and illustrator Bartholomew, with your help of course, will show your toddler, or slightly older child, that it's important of be kind to their guests. That they should never ask someone to stay over, without asking Mom or Dad first. That they should never ask Mom or Dad in front of the other child, thus possibly embarrassing him or her. And especially that they should never be like Randy Rude, a rude little boy in the story who is not kind to his guests.

Though this book was written over twenty years ago, it still stands up. The excellent comic book type illustrations will keep your child interested as you read along with him or her. And for the life of me I don't know why these books are not easier to get. Joy Berry is good for children, that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Joy Says a Child Should Shouldn't Slurp

In this book Ms. Berry and illustrator Bartholomew, with your help, will teach your child how to act and how not to act at the table. Your child will learn a bit about table manners in kind of a humerous way. Actually watching our son Devon eat is kind of humorous. He's approaching three and we read this book to him a lot and even at his early age, it has helped him get more of his food in his mouth than around it. In fact the other day were were at a friend's and he used a fork and spoon just like an adult and actually didn't spill hardly anything, we were so proud. Maybe his manners still need a bit of help, but this book will be there to help us teach him as he grows a bit older.
