Great book to prepare you for Germany!
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-05
The book does a great job explaining clearly and succintly the culture of Germany, identifying the do's and taboos in daily life and in business, and it also gives great advices. The book explains in details the procedures for almost anything that you would need in Germany providing up-to-date examples and names: tranportation options and regulations, financial services (it even tells you how and where to pay your bills), how to find a place to live in, what to expect in the business environment, and even the procedures and documents needed to bring your pet into Germany.

What I particularly liked about the book is that it gives advices based on different groups. If you are single, married, having troubling teenagers, or you are gay - the book tells you what to expect based on your situation and how to make the most out of your trip.

At the end of the book you will also find a section with useful phrases in German and a CD which could help you brush up your German pronunciation.

The book is great and I would higly recommend it to anyone planning to visit or live in Germany!

Finding the Perfect Gift
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-31
If you are sometimes stumped for gift ideas, this book comes in handy. It lists occasions (housewarming, retirement, christening, hospitalization, etc.) and suggests suitable gifts. For instance for "retirement" it recommends a Mexican rope hammock, a gift certificate to a health club, a gold-tooled photo album, and other gifts. Along with the list, the book gives some guidelines for each category and things to be sensitive to in your giving.
For major gift giving occasions (Christmas, birthdays) it breaks the suggestions down into age groupings plus man/woman, and even suggests "stocking stuffers." For wedding anniversaries, it lists the traditional list and a revised list.
Part II of the book gives tips for giving money, gift certificates, donations to a charity in the person's name, group presents, and even eliminating someone from your gift list.
The book is slim, but easy to consult so hopefully your gift giving is more "on target" in the future.

Delightfully informative and interesting! A must for all.

A wonderfully informative audio read by Letitia Baldrige herself, the queen of etiquette. She manages to pack the tape with all the etiquette knowlege one needs for a lifetime--and does it with a very amusing and relaxed manner! At long last I know how to indulge in the remaining sauce on my plate without offending and what to when I bite into something that just isn't edible! My husband and I both found the tape very interesting, especially because many of the tidbits of information proferred have made for excellent banter! Because the audio tape is packed with such a broad range of etiquette information, I continue to find it worthwhile listening (After all, I'm bound to get my manners together eventually... ) I give Tish the Dish and A+.

This book is a wonderful resource if you like to cook and entertain at home. Abigail Kirsch is a world famous caterer and her suggestions and advice is a big help. The recipes and photos are great too. I have nothing bad to say about this book. I bought 10 copies and am giving them away as Christmas presents.

A very fun story that is fun to read. My kids love this book! I think they love the illustrations as well as the visuals within the story. The book is written in such a way that it is very easy to read with lots of emotion and animated voices... which makes it even more fun for you to read and your kids to listen (and request to hear again and again).

Should be required reading for international travelers

It's All Chinese to Me: An Illustrated Overview of Culture and Etiquette in China is a straight-talk, no-nonsense introduction to basic Chinese culture and rules for politeness. The simple, cartoony, black-and-white illustrations help drive home these absolute "must-know" lessons for tourists and business travelers - especially anyone responsible for business negotiations! The advice ranges from common faux pas to avoid (never give clocks or cut flowers as a gift - they symbolize approaching mortal death), to the titanic importance of allowing others to "save face" (never rebuke a Chinese person in public!), to how one should behave when invited to another's house (guests should always leave a little food on their plates - too much left suggests that the food was bad, and a clean plate suggests that the hosts have not fed the guest properly) and much more. It's All Chinese to Me offers a balanced view of China's cultural strengths and weaknesses, and should be required reading for international travelers. Highly recommended.

A Great Read!!

I bought this book for my 2 1/2 year old about a month ago and she absolutely loves it. Before she got the Dora books, she asked me to read ocassionally, but now she refuses to go to sleep until I have read at least one Dora story. She actually allows me to read every single page. With other books she got very bored and skipped through the pages, not allowing me to get through the entire story. The Dora books keep her fully engaged and actively listening. I enjoy reading so I am excited to see that she does too!!
