Most important book to read; to start to understand us!
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 15 total.

This is in many ways an update to "Culture Shock Philippines." It is not a travel guide but does describe a number of good places to visit. It gives a good historical overview, then spends much of it's 168 pages explaining daily life, cultural issues, family values and our focus on the family.

It explains common attitudes toward foreigners, and how a foreigner can make a good impression. It includes an excellent discussion about Religion and our many Christian festivals. Descriptions of common housing, shopping, entertaining, family celebrations, and a whole chaper on traveling in The Philippines. I recommend this as the most important book to read to start to understand us. Jean

Doesn't pull any punches!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-18
Morten Strange may have a chip on his shoulder about the Danes, but he admits it pretty much upfront, or at the very least he doesn't try to hide it. If this turns you off to the book, well, that's your loss.

Why do I say that? Mainly because Morten's book tells it like it is and explains many cultural nuances about the Danes and their homeland. What you find int his book may sound opinionated and even stereotypical, but having been to Denmark numerous times and having married a Dane, I can say with some measure of relevant experience that his book is right on the mark.

If you're serious about learning more about Denmark, not just the stuff you read in travel guides and history books, but about Denmark as it is today and how the people and culture as a whole behave, this book is absolutely required reading. As I said in my title, Morten doesn't pull any punches in his book, which is simultaneously its strength and singular weakness. If brutal honesty and a slight chip on the author's shoulder doesn't bother you, definitely check this one out. You won't be disappointed.

My 2 year old son found this book when he was about 1 1/2 years old and loves it. We have watched the TV show "The Crayon Box" until they took it off the air since he was 6 mos old. Even though this book has more words than he usually likes, he listens to the entire book with enthusiam. I only wish they had more books like this!

I read this one in a couple a little more than an hour on the flight from Washington, DC to Tokyo while on my first business trip to Japan. It covers the high points to avoid major embarassment and has a helpful list of phrases in the back of the book.
