a useful book on magic and table mannersReview Date: 1999-12-03
Most books on magic and ``tricks'' tend to be frustratingly dull, but the lively prose, scrumptious humour and fine photos and illustration make this one a pleasure to read.
This magic book also has the virtue of presenting several tricks that are easy to perform--if you want to learn two or three very funny and fun tricks table gags that require almost zero practice, this is the book to get.
Comic Magicians Talk LunchReview Date: 2006-01-21
Most magicians do not share their secrets. But Penn and Teller love sharing the secrets of magic in a comic way. Some of the topics covered in this book are "Genteel versus vulgar food play"; "Why all miracles are fake"; Stabbing a fork in your eye"; popcorn and pizza tricks; the JFK trick; and many others. My favorite is the "Oliver Stone Melon-Head Trick", which is not for the squeamish. The only caveat is that they did not include the ImpeachBlair vanishing trick, but perhaps they can make the White House lap dog disappear?

This resource takes the complication out of starting a business, contacting the right agencies and doing things legally. It cuts through a lot of confusion, has an encouraging tone and presents what you need to know in a very logical and easy to understand format.
I often recommend this book to my small business clients and find it to be a useful general reference. It also points to many other good resources and is a good value for such a comprehensive book.

Smart Videoconferenceing: New Habits for Virtual MeetingsReview Date: 2003-04-10
Packed with Knowledge!Review Date: 2003-02-25
Very good book for end users of videoconferencingReview Date: 2002-11-19
Anyway,I think that this book will be good especially for those novice end users who have just started using the video technology and who want to use it in more effective and productive ways.
I think that this is a kind of a book that end users desire.@Basically they are not intersted in how technology works behind but more and more they are interested in benefits and effects that they anticipate to get from using the technology. Not intersted in features and capabilities etc.. Some may, though.
However, I would like to point out one thing.
There is a paragraph in page 10 regarding Japanese video market graph. What is written is not correctly translated into English.
The numbers in the year 1998 and 2000 are based on a prediction by unidentified source according to the web page. But numbers in the year 1988,1993 and 1995 are actual numbers.
The graph was a part of a presentation made for doctors in Saitama to understand the status quo of videocommunications in relation to medical activities. But it does not show the source.
The numbers includes all kinds of video equipment from room or board type to set-top to PC based to surveilance. It does not mean one product category.
But it is true that the first video service was launch in 1984 by NTT, but it was actually not as popular as expected. Just a handful of big companies in Japan used the service to slash costs associated with travels, and the service cost per month as running cost was unjustifiably quite high to smaller businesses, so it did not go hit. And after that, audio service introduced also by NTT that offers relatively inexpensive service which could be accepted by smaller businesses.

When the Stakes are High ...Review Date: 2002-10-21
After my first experience, I can attest that these are, indeed, the most important.
Our next videoconference event is scheduled in a few days - and I think our company is now much better prepared, thanks to the helpful, practical tips in this book, Smart Videoconferencing This book emphasizes the significant differences that exist between a face to face meeting and a videoconference. There is a paradox involved, because the videoconference demands both greater care and professionalism, while, at the same time, there is the necessity for a sense of relaxation and authenticity. I can tell you that our first event lacked both of these qualities - and our company lost some business as a result. Now, I think I we can avoid the mistakes we made last time.
I highly recommend this book for anyone engaged in videoconferencing when the stakes are high.

Great insights in to conducting business globallyReview Date: 2008-11-12
Business dealings are complex even when you conduct them in your own country, but they can become positively overwhelming when you venture outside of your comfort zone and have to deal with foreign business people in their own countries. I am speaking from personal experience here, although the first foreign country I had to deal with in my own career was actually the United States. You can believe me that the American way of doing business was a real culture shock to this European.
That's why I was truly glad to have found a really good, down-to-earth and practical guide in Rob Day's "Street Smarts for Global Business." There are a lot of things to be said for it, not the least of which is the very organized and approachable way all of the information therein is laid out for the reader. I have oftentimes found myself in a situation when I wanted to go back to a certain book for reference, but usually I found it really difficult to find the section I was interested in at the time. That's where the outstanding Summaries at the end of each chapter come in. Coupled with the fantastic Global Business templates at the end of the book they would already be enough for me to highly recommend the book. When we add to this the great amount of truly practical, hands-on information; as well as the personal and oftentimes funny insights of the author, we clearly have a potential winner in our hands.
I am sure you noticed the word "potential" in the previous sentence, which brings us to the elements that I found distracting and in some cases, just slightly disturbing. One of them was the clear lack of proofreading, most evident in the random punctuation used in the direct speech sections, as well as in some other areas; with my personal favorite being the placement of the apostrophe in the "Bill Gate's" name - I guess being one of the richest people on this planet is not enough to insure the proper spelling of your name either... The second issue - some factual mistakes, such as talking about Czechoslovakia in a book published in 2008, when the two countries, Slovakia and Czech Republic, separated back in 1993. And I am sure that the author is aware of the fact that people living in Central Europe are not big on being called Eastern Europeans, yet he does that more than once. Well, Western Europe did not fare much better, since one of the most famous streets in the world got renamed into Champs de lyses, and I am not sure that the French will ever forgive Rob Day for his opinion of foie gras. Even if the French were to forgive him, he'd still be in trouble, for calling expatriates ex-patriots. Most, if not all of those mistakes, should have been caught by a competent editor.
Overall I really liked the practical aspect of "Street Smarts for Global Business" as well as the invaluable examples and lessons of how to conduct business globally. With the world getting smaller every day, this is a book that should be read and referred to often by anybody who might ever be in the position of dealing with partners, investors or customers from another culture.

Title: Street Smarts for Global Business
Author: Rob Day
This is a book about the global business environment; and how to survive in it. The charts and insight offered by Mr. Day should help those looking to work in the global business arena. While this book has a limited audience, for those who need some information about what is required in the conducting global business, may find this book a tool, and some ideas of what to consider.
Mr. Day earned a MBA from California State University. For decades, Mr. Day has worked for major companies, small start-ups, and international companies. It is through this experience that he offers educational tips about how to deal with a global economy. Having work in global business, his experiences are taught to others.
As the world shrinks and we speak about a global economy rather than a state or national business, global business is becoming more of an option for many companies. With outsourcing of manufacturing and tech support to other countries, a business needs to know how to deal with all that is involved in doing global business. Other than a few slips in the names of some countries with the break-up of the old Soviet Union, there is a good deal of information in this book for people doing business in other countries around the world. This is not your sit down by the fire kind of book, but it is a book that is recommended for people working in and wanting to learn more about, global businesses.

A book with a LOT of Grace and Charm!Review Date: 2004-02-20
I think that what struck a chord with me particularly is that the characters are REAL children...in the way that they're NOT fairy princesses, Victorian school children, or living some other seemingly un-attainable lifestyle to most kids today.
It's time to take the fish forks and white gloves OUT of manners and etiquette...bringing manners into the mainstream!
