Excellent Books for Character Building and Emotional DevelopmentReview Date: 2007-09-13
Excellent book, excellent seriesReview Date: 2007-01-26
Fantastic book (and series!) that teaches without preaching. Added bonus: helpful for ASD children.Review Date: 2008-03-21
However, an added (and perhaps hidden) bonus of this and many if not all of the books in the series will interest parents of children on the autism spectrum. This and many of the other titles have opened a window to the kind of knowledge that simply does not come naturally to my daughter with high functioning autism. This title and others in the series (in particular Share and Take Turns, Listen and Learn, and Understand and Care) provide a framework for understanding social interactions and rules that is warm, supportive, loving, inclusive, natural, and most importantly, instructive.
I have watched how the lessons contained within them seamlessly flow into her daily conversation and life ("May I please have some Cheddar Bunnies, Mommy?" - this after a couple of readings of "Be Polite and Kind"). I know they have helped her think through the kinds of things that do not come naturally to her and equally importantly, give her the language framework to apply them. I highly recommend these books not just for children on the spectrum but for any parent or even teacher who is looking for an entertaining, non-preachy way to expand upon lessons on good social behavior or more simply, per the title of the series, is interested in helping their child learn "how to get along".

What a great ideaReview Date: 2008-02-17
It is quite a charming book for children (and grownups) who love tea parties. The children not only attend a tea party with their grandparents but they are taught all about how they are expected to act and how to eat properly during the tea party.
The storyline is quite good and the illustrations are beautiful. I am told my granddaughter liked it very much. I would definitely purchase it for any child but also note that tea parties we have at home do not have to be so formal.

Book is a very nice introduction to my country for people coming to live here and know about, but don't worry - not all the drivers are so bad and dangerous!
What about the Belgian coast?Review Date: 2003-09-06
This book would have received a 5-star rating if he hadn't so grossly neglected a very important area: the 67 km long coast line. The West-Flemish people are a breed on their own and have a myriad of customs and culture that decidedly differs from the inland. Considering the fact that the coast population in towns like Knokke are multiplied by 10 during the summer season, should give you an inkling of the diversity these people are accustomed to. Dialects are already different in pronunciation and colloqualisms in the next town of 3-5 km apart. The Belgian coast is responsible for the greatest income of the country, and the Flemish workers (in 't zwart) are some of the most industrious people around. If the royal family found the coast important enough to own several house along it, it certainly deserves more merit in this book. It is very apparent that the author's influence was dominated by his Brussels wife. Even some of the flemish words are not pronounced correctly or spelled right because of this inland influence (i.e.:ballekes, which is a typical non-West-Flemish word. the High Flemish (Dutch) term is much closer to the West Flemish "balletjes")
A lot of the customs and habits only reflect a small part of the Belgian people, usually the ones in big cities.
Still, buy the book, you'll learn more than you evfer want to know about this quaint country. Just make sure that when you visit it, make time away from all the museums and visit the flatlands of West-Flanders, and you'll come away with a whole lot more.

Now after having read through most sections, I am very happy with the purchase. It's a very stylish and fun reference that I've enjoyed reading. And I'm very glad that as expected and hoped, the mudane and the pleasant and not so pleasant possible realities of life are covered. There is a light and gentle sophistication to the style that keeps the reading from becoming smug or arrogrant. I don't thinking anyone would go wrong using this book as a reminder or instruction on how best to treat others well.

Great Common Sense Book on Career and Life SuccessReview Date: 2008-04-24
In "Do It Right" Ms. Sokolosky points out that, "We are living in a time of etiquette ambiguity...Today we're often forced to make it up as we go." She then presents 245 common sense, clearly stated, easy to understand and use tips that will save readers from having to make it up as they go.
Here are some of my favorites:
* When you are given information in confidence. Keep that confidence.
* Respect privacy of a co-worker's cubicle or office. Carry on conversations in your own space.
* One simple rule about office parties and business festivities: No matter what the occasion, it's still business, and moderation works best.
* Communicate with a K.I.S.S. - Keep It Short and Simple!
* We expect praise from our bosses, but we should also give praise for their outstanding efforts. Bosses need recognition too.
* Don't live in a WAM (What About Me) world. Try this: Go a whole day in the office without saying "I", instead say "we". Business is, in fact, not always about you.
* Save terms of endearment for those who are dear. "Honey" is something you spread on toast. A "Hun" is a warrior who followed Attila. A "deer" is an animal in the forest. A "girl' is a female under the age of 12 - not a secretary or assistant.
* A simple ring tone is best for your cell phone. Musical ring tones are annoying, particularly in a business setting.
* Meeting manners: Be present and in the moment. Think your thoughts through before sharing them. Support your ideas with facts. Be open minded to other's opinions. Take only your fair share of meeting time to contribute your ideas. Leave with a commitment to support the decisions made, no matter who presented the ideas.
* Board airplanes quickly. Long conversations and taking your time at the entryway back up traffic in the jetway.
* Carry over the shoulder luggage and back packs in front of you as you make your way down the aisle. Avoid hitting passengers who are already seated.
* Take you reading materials out of our carry on before boarding a plane, rather than fiddling with it in the aisle.
* Sit in your assigned seat.
* Tell people when you see a blouse unbuttoned, a fly open or a piece of lettuce between their teeth. Be sensitive, inconspicuous and gracious. Most of us appreciate being to and able to quickly resolve the situation.
* When you receive an unexpected gift, your only obligation is to be sincere in your thanks at the time, and in a follow up, handwritten thank you note. One gift does not necessarily deserve another.
Ms. Sokolosky also includes over fifty tips on international etiquette - a topic of increasing importance in today's global economy.
Finally, she shares some great quotes. Here are two of my favorites:
* "Unless he manages himself effectively, no amount of ability, skill, experience or knowledge will make an executive effective." Peter Drucker
* "If you make the obvious effort to be accommodating, sympathetic and kind, business will transpire, and deals will be made...and profits and goals realized." Letitia Baldridge
"Do it Right" is a great little book. It covers more than just etiquette. I think it provide essential advice for anyone interested in creating a successful life and career.
