Business Writing Makeovers by Hawley Roddick is a tremendously useful book. It is full of excellent information and advice that would benefit both business and non-business writers. Roddick's use of before and after letters, memos, reports, etc. is a practical and effective way to make important points. The concise checklists that follow are valuable aids. And joy of joys, the examples of writing deal with varied subjects and issues that are interesting, informative, and entertaining to read about! I highly recommend Business Writing Makeovers to anyone who wants to be the best communicator he or she can be.

The book covers so many occasions for communication, in and out of what is strictly business, that it is a useful guide to writing in general. It warns of pitfalls and recommends ways around them, but what I found most engaging were the transformations from Original to Makeover, the details and stories coming into focus: the "demotion" story, for instance, or the "retirement" details. Besides its practical purposes, the book discovers the inner workings of many business activities, and it is indeed enlivened by the novelist's invention.

Helpful and readable

Business Writing Makeovers should be useful to business people, teachers of writing, and anyone who wants to write better. It is also fun to read: I enjoyed the letters in which a company official complains to a supplier that the huge ice sculpture ordered for a sales conference had been set up so it melted onto an electrical unit, causing a short circuit that ruined the conference's most important presentation. Roddick's sample letters and emails show ways to make your writing more precise, concise, correct, and graceful. They will help you choose the right tone to adopt in a letter, the right details to include, and the right structure to convey information and ideas. I found good suggestions here for writing with greater tact, better grammar, and stronger impact. Roddick's own writing is elegant and clear--an excellent example for her readers.

Internet Messaging: From the Desktop to the Enterprise

excellent introduction to email

This book does not focus exclusively on a single topic, but instead provides a well-rounded discussion on all things email-related. For example, it does not focus exclusively on any one messaging implementation, nor does it get bogged down on technical discussions of protocols and message boundaries, but instead it covers these topics (and more) as part of a comprehensive discussion on electronic mail in general.

Each chapter tackles a broad subject and then provides a studied discussion of several touchstone issues related to that discussion. For example, there is a chapter on sending email in an enterprise network which provides ample discussions on several subordinate topics, including an introduction to LDAP directories, a summary discussion on various gateways and integration services that are likely to be used in that kind of environment, and details for configuring popular messaging clients to take advantage of these services.

In this regard, Internet Messaging provides a well-rounded introductory discussion on the subject of Internet email at large, making it perhaps the best novice guide on the market. It is especially well-suited for people who are just stepping into messaging concepts, but advanced users and implementors will also find plenty of useful nuggets.

Having only read an excerpt, it's obvious the authors understand e-mail and the valuable role it plays in business-to-consumer communication. If you have customers online, e-mail is a critical part of your communication/marketing strategy. I'm sure this book will help you develop your winning strategy for e-mail. Like Lenny, I'm buying copies for my senior staff.

Stan and Bruce are two great dads who said everything I would like to say to my 19-year-old about life and faith in their E-mails to their daughters during their first years of College. One daughter is at Biola and the other at Wheaton. I kept saying to my husband, "Listen to This," and reading excerpts to him. This book reads like a devotional, with sections divided into topics. I will be recommending this book to all my friends with young adult daughters.

I purchased onyourown.com on a whim, thinking that it would make a nice impromptu gift for my Pastor who has a daughter away at college. However, as I began skimming through the passages, I was touched and inspired by Bruce and Stan's heartfelt exchanges with their daughters. They said things that I wished my father had shared with me when I was growing up. My parents divorced when I was young, so I missed out on the father-daughter bonding. However, onyourown.com has filled a void in my life, even though I am an adult!

Needless to say, I've since purchased another copy for my Pastor...

Just read onyourown.com yesterday. I bought it for my husband to read while our daughter is away at Westmont as a sophomore. I was reading the short chapters to my daughter and we started crying together. (She is home for Thanksgiving ) We understood! These fathers have a gift of explaining life in short sermons using analogies and scripture. Both authors have a wonderful sense of humor. A must read for dads. Has Focus on the Family been introduced to this book?

Review Date: 2006-08-22
This book is best for someone who is aware that their email (and written) communication could use improvement and is motivated to improve. This book is NOT an instruction on how to use your email program. Rather, this book discusses (and gives well-designed examples of) how to effectively use email in a business setting. The book is compact and laid out nicely, with effective use of examples.

Sections includes:
Section 1: Management Policies. Discussion and examples of policies to implement, and how to manager workers via email (with Do's and Don'ts)

Section 2: The Traits of E-Mail writing.
- Focus Your Ideas
- Improve Your Organization
- Use an Appropriate Voice
- Choose Words with Care (includes technical words and jargon)
- Improve Your Sentences
- Check for Correct Copy
- Design E-mails for Clarity

Section 3: Models and Activities (includes several examples of model emails, and practice activities).

I encountered resistance when trying to buy copies of this book while at a former employer. I was in a technical organization, and "we all know how to use email" was the attitude, with no concern that their emails looked like ransom notes (with a variety of fonts, colors, etc.) and often were ignored due to a lack of clarity. The content of this book is great, trying to implement it may be difficult.

Journalist and mother of two Bari Auerbach presents You've Got Male: On-Line Dating Exposed, an anthology of real e-mails from supposed men in cyberspace. From misspellings to ridiculous promises to the rare uplifting or flirtatious email that can make a gal's day, You've Got Male explores the gamut along with helpful tips and tricks for online dating. "Help! The MILF hunter is after me!! (MILF stands for 'Mothers I'd Like to... you can figure out the rest!) Even though Demi and Ashton have made it somewhat more mainstream for older women to be with younger men, I think it's probably safe to say that the majority of under-30 guys are mostly oversexed and not overly into having intellectually stimulating conversations. I've also received countless messages from men my age who look 20 years older - or actually do qualify for the senior citizen movie ticket!" From sexist emails to narcissism-clogged "all about me" emails to emails with ludicrous questions ("Didn't I see you on bay watch or should I say babe watch?") and much more, You've Got Male is sure to bring a smile to the face of any woman who has perused the online dating scene.

Reading You've Got Male is a great way to learn what to expect when you sign up to be a member of on-line dating sites. It's also really shocking to read the real e-mails guys are writing...things they'd probably never be brave enough to say out loud to a girl face to face! There are also hysterically funny e-mails and some touching, sentimental ones too...You've Got Male is a great coffee table book to share with friends and enjoy some great laughs - not to mention some surprised gasps and "No way!!" shout outs when the author Bari Auerbach reveals what's really going on - online! You've Got Male also makes a great holiday gift for girlfriends!

Helpful Votes: 2 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-08
Michael Chesbro's The Complete Guide To E-Security covers all aspects of using the Internet and email while protecting personal privacy. Chesbro reveals how anyone's email can be accessed and read a dozen times between the time it is sent and when it is received, that through such techniques as cookies and bugs, the unscrupulous can track which websites you visit, your IP address, email address, geographic location, even the type of computer you use. Chesbro then goes on to explain everything needed to insure both safety and anonymity while surfing the Internet, how to set up encrypted email, crate uncrackable passwords, "off the shelf" unbreakable encryption programs, and sending email through remailer services to disguise the source. The Complete Guide To E-Security is essential reading for anyone seeking to protect and ensure his or her privacy on the web or in electronic communications.

Review Date: 2000-12-27
Mr. Chesbro discusses in detail and offers many practical solutions to internet and e-mail security. I found his book informative on exactly how e-mail messages are sent. More importantly his book has enabled me to send e-mail and surf the web by secure means without the worry of being intercepted by prying eyes. A must read for anybody who sends e-mail over the internet or desires greater internet security.

His explanation on how e-mail is sent and how to implement privacy safeguards are clear, relevant and to the point. Not included is a lot of unnecessary technical detail. He details practical methods on how a citizen or even a corporation can set up private and secure e-mail using free/public internet e-mail security programs. I especially liked his tips on anonymous web-browsing and e-mail remailers.

E-mail security is briefly touched on in the author's book "Privacy for Sale". In "The Complete Guide to E-security", Mr. Chesbro goes into much more detail on e-security when surfing the web, sending e-mail, e-communications planning, and laws pertaining to electronic communications.

In the same vein as A Year in Provence. . . For any hard working professional who has dreamt of quitting her job and living the artist's life in France. Vernelle shares her story of jumping off the limb and landing well in Paris and, eventually, in the south of France, and finding her creativity in the process. The "e-mail" format gives the story a freshness and immediacy, a sort of cyber-epistolary genre. Funny and inspiring, a map for a great sabbatical year.

Brief, to the point, and fun! Everything you need to know about email. One thing missing (as from most email manuals) - how to 'read' emails, not only how to 'write'. Just as many problems with email come from the reader's interpretations, as they do from the writer's intent.

Get Smart is a "must read" for every CEO in the country!

This short, thoughtful, well written book is about how corporate employees should use e-mail in our litigious times. It looks at e-mail etiquette and other important matters. The most important matter is how to protect the corporation by not sending emails that could embarrass it or result in lawsuits. This little book should be read by anyone who uses e-mail. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
