Great computer book helps the average user get after threats to their computer!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-03
Bug-Free Computing, by Ken Dwight, who calls himself "The Virus Doctor," is a book that could be very important to business people who depend on their computers to make a living and worry about a virus or other malevolent software designed to attack a computer and bring it down.

If this concerns you, but you have no real idea how to deal with it, Dwight's book is a solid primer designed for the average computer user. You don't have to be a geek to understand it, it's written in plain English, with a minimum of technical jargon. For example, in a chapter devoted to data backups, readers will be delighted to find information specifically tailored to the average user - what to back up, when, how, what media to use, what programs to use, etc.

Viruses are a primary focus of the book; most computer users are aware of viruses and their potential to do harm, but what many users don't understand, even technicians, is that viruses have changed greatly in the past few years in terms of virus behavior and distribution, so it's extremely important to keep up with and be aware of these differences.

Bug-Free Computing also discusses spyware, browser hijackers, keyloggers, spam, hoaxes, urban legends and other possible computer problems. You don't have to read the book cover-to-cover to get the help you need. The reader can take a look at the table of contents to discern the chapter that covers their most pressing concerns, and quickly flip to that chapter.

In addition, the text includes hyperlinks to various web sites and articles referenced in the book. If the reader desires more information than what is presented in Dwight's book, the links will provide more detail and even direct the reader to vendors of products mentioned in the book. Also, the information contained in the appendices is extremely helpful; the most useful is the ability to keep the information up-to-date from the Book Registration web site.

While the subject of programs that can damage your computer is a serious one, Dwight offers a light-hearted detour in the form of a section on hoaxes and urban legends. This section is good for a few chuckles before returning to the grim realities of dealing with computer problems.

Dwight's style is easy and disarming, making for a pleasant read, even for technophobes. For example, in the chapter on spam, he shows users how to read message headers and footers to find clues to the real identity of the sender and how to use filters to cut down on your spam email. He also explains that it's not a good idea to click on the "Remove Me" link that is included in some spam emails; that action could possibly increase your email rather than decrease it.

Ken Dwight's book is chock-full of common-sense pointers, making it an excellent choice for those who want to protect their computers without hiring expensive consultants.

Lucid explanation of PC bugs and solutions

Mr. Dwight draws on his 40 years of computer experience to present a lucid explanation of the inner workings of PC programs and how they are affected by viruses and other malicious programming. His technical explanations are easy to follow and understand, even for the novice PC user. His book has clear screen-shots of typical Windows options, and he carefully explains why and how to optimize Windows for maximum operating efficiency and security. His book is essential reading for anyone who has a PC connected to the Internet. I am an accomplished user, but I am not an expert, and I found his many hints and suggested settings to be excellent methods of improving my PC's protection. I purchased several copies to give to family and friends because I found his advice invaluable.

This is a great book for anyone who has a computer. The book is arranged well, starting with an overview of computer viruses and how they originate, pass from machine to machine and work. It gives a brief insight as to the type of person who creates this havoc.

Most importantly, it gives us the information that we need to minimize our exposure to computer viruses and what to do if/when we get infected. I will definitely keep my virus and firewall protection up to date.

Not very technical, great for the person who wants to understand the problem and what to do

If your computer is on and you are connected to the Internet then sooner or later it will become infected. These days you don't have to open attachments, download a file, or even surf the web to become infected; just being connected can make you a target. In his book Bug-Free Computing, Ken Dwight educates the reader about the history of the many threats to safe computing and what you can do to make your computer experience as safe as possible. Some of the information will be surprising to most people including the fact that most infections occur on a system that has anti-virus software installed. To keep bug-free he discusses anti-virus software, using a firewall, spam filtering, and a host of other techniques to increase your safety. And, of course he includes a section on what to do if you are already infected. Written in a very easy to understand style, Bug-Free Computing is highly recommended to the everyday user who wants to understand the computing environment and how to work on their computer without stressing about infections.

..........................................

Filled with tips for old hands as well as for those who are new

to e-mail, this book is sure to help everyone write better

business messages on the job. Part 1 is specifically about how to

use e-mail at work. Part 2 is a useful guide to the nitty-gritty

of business writing for e-mail and on hard copy - how to get the

words and punctuation right so that you sound and look

professional.

The book is a great resource. I keep it on the shelf above my
computer so I can refer to it often. It's full of helpful
examples that show the wrong way and the right way to use words.
The complete index makes it easy to find things. You won't have
to wonder about whether to use lie or lay, which or that, fewer
or less, I or myself. You won't have to wonder about how to
address a new client or whether to send an urgent message. The
answers are all there in this one handy book.

From learning to phrase messages that are alert, easily understandable, direct, useful, and appropriate, to keeping one's messages within company guidelines, Business E-Mail is a superbly organized, practical, accessible "how-to" guide and very highly recommended reading for every business organization from a one-man shop to an international conglomerate with e-mail as an integral part of their daily operations in today's computer age.

A quick glance at e-mail and clear business writing

Review Date: 2002-12-05
This book may be useful for the e-mail newcomers or for native English speakers who are not very skilled in the formal writing.

The book consists of two parts: "How to make e-mail work for you" and "How to write for business". The first part covers basic usage of e-mail, and can be helpful for e-mail newbies. However, if you've sent ten thousand messages so far, it is unlikely that you find anything useful there.

The author has dedicated the second chapter of the book to business writing. It is mostly a set of dos and don'ts, without deeper analysis. I recommend separate, deep books on business writing and correct use of English. The author, has also given a list of references that include "The American Heritage Book of English Usage" by Editors of The American Heritage Dictionaries, "The American heritage Dictionary of the English Language" by Editors of The American Heritage Dictionaries, "Alphabet to Email" by Naomi S. Baron, "Email in the Workplace" by Cristina Cavanagh, "The Chicago Manual of Style" by John Grossman, "Grammar for Grownups" by Val Dumond, "Cliffsquickreview Writing" by Jean Eggenschwiller and "E-What?" by Editors of EEI Press.

The use of Internet technology has made the effective communication of thoughts and ideas in a variety of formats and styles possible. Good Website design alone, however, does not assure that one's intended business message will get across as well as planned and hoped for. Good writing and presentation skills are also important factors to consider in the overall communication process.

Robert Bly has written The Encyclopedia of Business Letters, Fax Memos, and E-Mail to assist people to create a variety of important business correspondence that can be put to use in the office and online. Bly, the author of The Copywriter's Handbook, offers his readers some quick solutions to meeting many practical business correspondence needs. He provides plenty of samples throughout the book that cover a broad range of business needs, including correspondence with colleagues, vendors, employees and employers, customers, handling complaints and requests, making collections, and producing sales and direct marketing letters.

Readers will be impressed with the ease with which they can learn to create their own business letters. Following the guiding principles, samples, and instruction in this book will result in generating favorable responses in making sales, marketing products and services, issuing warnings for poor worker performance, making the firing of people much easier to accomplish (gulp!), terminating services, apologizing for poor performance, and many other tough real-life circumstances they are likely to face in the business world someday!

Bly offers some very helpful tips on customizing letters to meet specific circumstances such as time-sensitive communications, varying message tone, generating favorable responses with creative wording, and preparing correspondence intended for faxing and e-mailing. Bly cautions his readers by reminding them that once someone sends an electronic communication there may be no way to stop it from reaching its destination. Watch your words and emotions!

Readers will learn how to produce many top-notch communications for any purpose, including office correspondence, faxes, e-mail, newsgroups, and Website design use. This book will assist business people of all levels of experience to get any message across much easier with more confidence! This is an indispensable business writing guide. Look good in print and online! Highly recommended for novice business owners!

Annabelle and Guy's fathers suggest that they e-mail each other. Having nothing better to do (and trying to appease their parents), the try it. Though at first they are a bit reluctant, e-mailing only to please their dads, they soon become fast friends, maybe even more. But then things go horribly awry when they try to find out why their fathers haven't spoken in so many years, yet are anxious for the two of them to communicate. Their theories are absolutely hilarious and will have you in stitches. The best part? Chris wrote Annabelle's voice, and Linda wrote Guy's.

PLEASE let there be a sequal... and then another... and another.... at least 1 sequal. The book is about Annabelle and Guy whose parents knew each other and suggested they started writing over the internet become friends, and then thier imaginations go wild and they think.... well, you have to read the book, which I reccomend to anyone and everyone.

I'm going to tell you about a book that is personally one of my personal favourites. The plot is simple. A boy and girl meet by e-mail. As you read on, the characters find out about their parents' past. It all ends happy, though.
I thought the characters in the book (Annabelle, Guy and their parents) were very strong. My favourite character is Annabelle because she has such a strong will and quite stubborn. I also liked her because i can relate to her. My friends at school say that I remind them of her, (my friends have also read the book!). I feel sorry for guy because of what has happend to him in the past.
I loved this book. It was funny and very sarcastic, and also quite sad in some places : *o ( .
I totally think there should be a sequal to this book and I could write a lot more, but I'll stop. It was great and i recommend it to young teens.

I mean at one part of the book that took off there socks and checked there feet...haha. I guess you had to read it...lol. Anyways, even though some of the english terms were hard to understand, im a american this book was still horibly funny and I would recomend it to anyone who needs a good laugh. Also, on the preview pages of the book (I forget what you call them...) it does has this writting like the two authours are chatting and linda tells chris she has a good idea for a book and chris asks what and she says that they email each other or something like that. And chris asks what the plot and linda says there isnt one yet. And she wants HIM to play the girl! HAHA. I thought that made it even more funny the male writer playing the girl.....lol. Anyways, this book was awesome to the end and very unique.

Heroine: Very tall, full-figured

Kristina Simmons, bright, dependable, no-nonsense Montessori teacher never takes chances like this. Yet she's packed all her things, moved out of her home, and is now hovering on the doorstep of her fiancé's Chicago mansion. It sounds like the perfectly natural thing to do, except for the fact that Kristina has never laid eyes on the man, nor even heard his voice over the phone. She accepted his surprising proposal only after a flurry of email exchanges!

Handsome Drew Connelly is a success at everything. Except relationships. He hasn't managed to connect with a woman since he lost his wife years earlier. The only light in his life is his family, especially the young daughter who adores him. Feeling guilty about his frequent business trips and revolving door nannies, he swears to find her a mother, never dreaming that his daughter has taken things into her own hands . . . with a little help from her great-grandmother and the internet!

Drew meant to straighten things out between himself and the stranger on his doorstep, he truly did. But he never expected to feel attracted to her, let alone fall in love with her! Yet no matter how afraid he is of losing his new romance with Kristina, his conscience can't let them live out a lie. How can he break it to her that he never actually proposed marriage, but wishes with all his heart that he had?

What worked for me:

I liked Drew and Christina as individuals as well as together. I was really rooting for things to work out for them.

Size-wise, thanks to a mother who can't pass up telling her daughter about the latest diet fads, Kristina really disliked her appearance at the start of the story. But with Drew's support she was able to begin her journey towards appreciating her ample curves.

What didn't work for me:

Yet another late-blooming virgin. (Truly, I have nothing against folks who choose to wait. But it just seems like there's been a high number of plump, older virgins in the contemporary stories I've read lately.)

Aside from a sketchy history, we really aren't given much information on Kristina's background. On the other hand, there's an overload of confusing information on Drew's wealthy, aristocratic family because this story falls smack dab in the middle of the Connelly Dynasty series.

The plotline is a bit far-fetched, but I was willing to overlook it since I do like surprise encounters in my stories.

Overall:

A fast, solid read. Fans of category novels and family series should enjoy this one.

Be aware that there are some steamy scenes toward the end.

If you liked "His E-mail Order Wife" you might also enjoy "The Bridesmaid's Reward", "His Seductive Revenge", "Carried Away", "Dear Cupid", "Looking for Laura", or "Sweet Memories".

Truly wonderful!

A great story of the self conscious heroine and the confident hero. Kristen took a chance on a man she has been emailing, only it is not Drew, it is a set up by his grandmother! Now, Kristen is moving in for a trial engagement and Drew does not know what to do, especially when she arouses feelings and desires he long thought dead. Sparks start to fly from the moment these two meet, but even more so when he takes the chance and kisses her. How can he ever tell her those emails were not from him? How can he drive her away when he desires her body close to his?

Ms. Gold pens a passionate love story that will live in the reader's memory long after the book is closed.

Oh and did I laugh! The whole premise of the story is that Drew comes home from a business trip to find his 6 year old daughter and grandmother have set him up to get married from a singles web site. The story gets better from there. Out of the Connelly series this was definitely the best one, and it's cover is desceptive, as the story in it is not just a romance, but a comedy as well! Definitely recommended!

High-powered executive Drew Connelly returns from a business trip bone-tired and anxious to see his young daughter, Amanda. But Drew gets the shock of his life when little Amanda reveals she and his eighty-three-year-old grandmother have ordered him the perfect gift from the Internet: a fiancée, courtesy of Singlemania.
Drew has been down the marriage path before and knows he's still too wounded to marry again, let alone a woman Grandma Lilly found on the Internet. When Kristina arrives, he's determined to convince her that he's not husband material, but Kristina is not like any woman he's ever met. She's smart, practical, nurturing, and down-right gorgeous. As a result, Drew struggles to keep his hands off her, but she insists they need to get to know one another - in person.
Kristina is surprised to find that the darkly handsome Drew considers her gorgeous. All her life, her mom has pestered her with advice about dieting and how important it is to be a size six to get a man. But Kristina long ago made peace with her natural voluptuousness. The one area she won't compromise on is that it's what's inside a man that counts. Naturally, she's reluctant about her blossoming e-mail courtship, but after having Drew's credential's investigated, she's determined to give it a try. She feels compelled because she's already falling in love with Amanda and can't forget the little girl's wish for a mommy.
Although Kristina and Drew have initial misgivings, the chemistry that sizzles between them soon draws them together. In this case, Grandma was right. Kristina is the perfect wife for Drew.
This latest title in the Dynasties: The Connelly's series is a tender love story with plenty of humor and loads of sensuality. His E-Mail Order Wife is another can't-put-it-down Desire from Ms. Goldberg.

My interest in buying this book was to get a better understanding of Internet email systems. X.400 is obsolete if it ever lived at all. What amazed me is how the development of X.400 and SMTP went hand in hand. Or put another way how SMTP and the other mail protocols are modeled on X.400.

This book gave me a greater appreciation for the work that went into designing today's email systems. Anyone who wants to consider themselves an email expert needs to understand the heritage to fully understand why email is the way it is.

For a general if ideologically out-dated history, see Grace Steele Woodward, for culture see Mooney, Theda Perdue for work specifically on women, and for straight-up historical scholarship, try William McLoughlin's stuff.

Rev. Mails, a retired Lutheran minister, has produced a classic reference on the Cherokee people. He quotes other historians, including Englishmen who lived with the Cherokees during the 1700 and early 1800's, who believed the Cherokees are descended from the Hebrews (reinforcing Mormon beliefs that Cherokee ancestors came from Jerusalem and were Jews). The chapter on religion is very complete. The drawings, by Rev. Mails himself, are wonderful, as is his attention to detail. The bibliography is extensive.

Would recommend this text for use in teaching Cherokee Culture and History. A valuable tool for exploring and researching the history of a noble people- The Cherokee.

This interesting little book is a collection of short homilies designed to provide a pick-me-up to a teen. With titles such as "You won't miss out," and "Learn to be a love receiver," the homilies are short and easy to read, and give a mental boost at the right moment. Each one of these begins with a Bible verse (NIV translation), and appears to be non-denominational, which means that this is a good book for any believer. So, if you want to give a teen in your life a handy resource, then I would recommend this book to you.

E-mail from God by Curt and Claire Cloninger is the one book I look to when I need help in this world. This book is written in a form of an email from God to a teenager who might hav some problems in his/her life. The emails talk about many different things, including peer pressure, popularity, sports, and family life. This helps you to be able to handle all the rude comments and cruel things people will say or do to you through your life. God talks to about about how you are perfect the way you are and you don't need to change because of what other people say about you.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It helps a lot with maning different aspects in my life and helps me be able to hande all the tough situations. It has helped me be able to ignore all of the rude comments that come my way and be able to stand up for myself and others. I would recommend this book to anybody who is having any sort of trouble in their life.

This book is awesome! I myself am a 14 year old girl whodoesn't particularly like to read anything but magazines. My mombought this book for me and I decided to try it out. I am so glad I did! It is a great book for anyone who doesn't necessarily want to sit down and read for long periods of time. This book is one that you can read a few pages at a time, and then be able to pick it up later and not have to re-read some of the pages to get the idea. I also like it because it truly does relate to me and my life. It really makes you think and I have reccommended it to all of my friends.

Attractive and modern outlay of single page devotional/message. done in computer screen style on every page. Messages are relevant to teens. they contain questions to make them think and message is not very long. i believe this is good for some/alot of teens who don't have a very long attention span for wordy messages. Author gets point across and signs off differently each time which is very creative and personal. Strong message of God's love for them comes through each page.

Nancy Flynn is brilliant. Love this book! I also heard she's speaking at two conferences. I'm going to Enterprise Messaging Decisions in Chicago in early May. I think the url is enterprisemessagingdecisions.com. She's also speaking at another conference in June in San Fran. Maybe I'll go to both!

A fine book, and a nice addition to the growing necessity for managing employee activity and office automation. It should be said that a more comprehensive treatment can be found in "I.T. Wars: Managing the Business-Technology Weave in the New Millennium."

In a recent review of "The ePolicy Handbook: Designing and Implementing Effective E-Mail, Internet and Software Policies", I wrote asking questions such as "Does your company or organization have a policy that covers writing style in electronic communications? Does your company or organization have cyberinsurance to cover losses attributed to errors or employee misbehavior using your e-mail systems? Does your company or organization offer netiquette training for employees and managers?"

In her follow-up book, E-Mail Rules - A Business Guide to Managing Policies, Security, and Legal Issues for E-Mail and Digital Communication, (254 Pages, The American Management Association, 2003), Nancy Flynn takes a narrower view of the management of E-Mail and Digital Communication in the enterprise.

Much like her first book, Flynn lays out 37 Rules to follow in establishing and managing these policies. She starts out by establishing a framework to build a case for e-mail management. This section covers the need to reduce liability and exposure, real world legal issues, and spelling pout that e-mail belongs to the employer not the employee. From this point, she goes into specific issues surrounding privacy (very important for international communications and differences in laws), content management, Listserv use, and more. The book also has very good concise discussion about retaining e-mail as business records, different methods of storage, and employee education. Flynn then delves into discussions of E-mail Security and managing alternative technologies such as instant messaging and peer-to-peer networking technologies.

Fir this reader, the most important rules are the last two in the book, that deal with employee training as the key to reducing risk, and working to instill a sense of ownership in employees. Without these two items, no policy ever written will work or be effective.

Much like her first book though, the only caution for potential readers is that this book also seems to be a lead-in as a commercial for the services and her colleagues as listed in Appendix C.

The Scorecard: Par on an average Par 4.

This book covers it all. From email etiquette to how to protect yourself in case of a law suit. Email is a major part of any business --- large and small. And if you're not prepared to handle it; if you don't know how to use it, what to save and what to get rid of, you're going to end out in one big mess.

This book can save you a lot of time and money by telling you how to deal with spam, what sort of policies to implement in your company or business, what email etiquette is all about and many other topics.

This is a book you should have and use no matter how large or small your business is.

An e-mail appears in your Inbox. The subject says: "$5,000 Diet Challenge!" The message body starts out, "Hi! My name is Betty Wilson. I got your e-mail address off a post." The message is bulk-addressed to a group of 10 AOL recipients (of which you are one) that appears to have been harvested. And it seems that "Betty Wilson's" e-mail address is seye45y@mail3.blackjackhit.com.

Is there any computer user on the face of the planet whose brain isn't screaming "SPAM!!" right now and mentally reaching for the Delete key?

And yet, author Lewis holds up this flatulent piece of dreck as an exemplary e-mail that "has good text, excellent rapport, and a strong one-to-one approach." Umm...okayyyyy...and I'll bet that same excellent rapport helps if you want to sell V 1 A G R A Cheap, No Prescription Needed!!!!!!

At first, I thought he was joking when he highlighted examples like this as the type of e-mail marketing messages we should be emulating. But he's quite serious. Unfortunately, such lapses of discernment send his credibility plummeting and make it hard to separate his good advice from his bad.

He does have good advice to give, too, such as his admonition to carefully test different versions of an e-mail before blasting it out to a large list of recipients, and to measure the response and tweak the final production message accordingly.

Lewis cut his teeth on print-media direct mail marketing and a lot of the writing techniques and triggers that worked in print can be used effectively in e-mail. But today's e-mail marketing messages need to be composed much more carefully to avoid being automatically filtered out as spam -- by machine or human -- and Lewis doesn't convince me that he Gets It. His stuff doesn't pass the smell test.

Lewis is a copywriting and marketing guru with over 25 books under his belt. This book is designed for the times, when so many marketers are concerned about how to get their message out by electronic mail--a lot cheaper than the alternative offered by the United States Postal Service. Benefit: at least e-mail gets through; unfortunately, a lot of bulk mail has not made it to addressees over the years.

So what's different about the electronic approach, other than the method of distribution? Don't you still need great copy and an effective target list of potential buyers?

There are a lot of similarities between electronic and postal direct mail, so you'll read chapters on words and phrases that work and don't work. You'll still get the advice on how to construct your message to grab the attention of the recipient. This immediate attention issue is even more acute with e-mail: hitting the DELETE button is a lot quicker than handling a piece of mail, opening it or not, and tossing it in the trash.

Lewis has tailored this book nicely to this new medium, exploring how to adapt to this communications vehicle without getting burned. Chapters discuss opt-ins, avoiding the "spam" accusation, and how to use the e-mail subject line most effectively. He explores how to establish rapport through e-mail, using personalization and psychology to elicit the desired response. The chapter on rich media and viral mail is certainly something you won't find in a typical marketing book.

This book is filled with medium-specific information, quelling my fear that this would be just another marketing book with "E-Mail" dropped in the front of the title. These pages are a treasure-trove of resources and tailored advice. The ten pages of tips at the end of the book supplement the tips that appear on the pages throughout the text. An abundance of examples illustrate the author's points. Indexed.
