From Gary Chapman. I was tired of hearing all these stories about Teddi Winograd from my ever-loving wife, Ingrid. After reading Chit Chat, however, I know why she admires her. Ingrid credits Teddi with giving her so much savvy about the ways of business. And I've picked up some ideas that are helping me in my own field, too. I still can't believe that Teddi Winograd went from earning 20 cents an hour to Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. It only took thirty hard years!

From Merrill "Moe" and Maxine Ordesky. Chit Chat reads better the second time around--especially when you wrote about me and the trials and tribulations of working together while I was at The Broadway Department Store. Maxine re-reads a chapter a night. I think I'll take it away from her!

From Paul and Megan Holmberg. We had the good fortune to meet Teddi Winograd at a conference in Washington, DC recently. What an interesting life she has led! She even told us the year she was born. (Of course, a woman who tells you the truth about her age, will tell you anything!) And she did!

Raechel Donahue, a freelance writer in Los Angeles, writes that Teddi Winograd tells a fashionable and romantic tale.

The title for Teddi Winograd's auto-biography is somewhat misleading. "Chit Chat This 'n that: The Rocky Road to Success" promises (and delivers) a fair amount of dish, but don't think that the only lesson between the covers is "Don't kiss and tell." Instead, the woman behind Teddi of California offers a primer on the fashion industry and a parallel historical chronology that entails much more than the rise and fall of hemlines.

From her grandfather's emigration from Russia to her rise to the top of the fashion elite, Teddi's narrative combines romance and captivating anecdotes with a remarkable insight into the apparel business. Alongside the poignant story of Teddi's unflagging devotion to her beloved husband, Sam, and their adored children is a meticulous record of the progress of women's rights in the increasingly inter-twined worlds of business, society, politics and family. An added bonus is the wonderful collection of personal photos, fashion sketches and advertising artwork. From the 40's through the 90's, Teddi Winograd was the bellwether of each trend, interpreting the needs of women and effectively creating a convergence of fashion and function.

Although peppered with famous names from Chairman Mao to Ronald Reagan, the only delicious tidbits in Chit Chat are the offhanded revelations of scandals-the This 'n That. Straightforward recollections of spy tactics in the cutthroat clothing business, shame-less betting 'shenanigans' in sports and frightening revelations of the machinations of wealth and politics are tossed off with an equanimity that could only come from having earned success by honest means.

If Danielle Steele wrote it, it would be a captivating bit of fiction. But Teddi's story is true, and that makes it all the more amazing.

Preserving Your Memories with a Family History

From John P. Nucklos

Teddi Winograd, has a story to tell. It's her own personal story and she tells it in over 400 pages of compelling detail in her book, Chit Chat This 'n That: The Rocky Road to Success. Prompted by her grandson's searching questions about his family history, Teddi decided to record her history in a way that would enlighten and entertain her family for generations to come.

"When I sharpened my pencil and delved into my past, I realized my life-which spanned over seventy years-was a microcosm of our times," says Teddi. From the Roaring Twenties, through the Market Crash of the Thirties, to the Internet Boom of today, Teddi offers a unique and personal twist to the vast sweep of history and change of the last three quarters of a century.

Dedicated to the memory of her late husband, Sam, to whom she celebrated over 50 years of loving companionship, Teddi not only tells how she and Sam created a successful apparel company out of nothing, but she also relates the personal triumphs and setbacks that accompanies them on their "rocky road to success." Full of the type of personal observations and nuances that are often lost as a generation passes on, the book is sure to be a lasting legacy to her children and grandchildren. "Personal history gives you a wonderful opportunity to put your life in order and see how you arrived to where you are now; for your family, it offers a powerful narrative on how the family developed," says Professor Gerald Larue of the Andrus Gerontology Center. "The best kind of personal history is one that you write and then pass on to other family members to enrich with their own memories and stories."

Not only will Teddi's story be a pleasure to read for her family, but it is sure to be an inspiration to anyone who aspires to fulfill their own American dreams.

This is an excellent walkthrough of Skype all the way from getting started to using special phones and other VoIP appliances. I'm impressed by the depth of the coverage, and the quality of the writing. This is easily the best book I've seen on Skype.

Bye-Bye Phone Company!

"Skype Me" is an excellent book for both beginners and advanced users of this free Voice over IP (VoIP) application. With easy instructions for downloading, installing, and using on any system, Skype is remarkably effective, but simple. It allows you to talk by voice in computer-to-computer conversations, conferencing, and even video capabilities with the necessary security features to protect your conversations.
This "family and friends" phone plan could put the phone companies out of business - except to bring us the DSL line. I've seen my wife use Skype to conference with her local partner and their Australian customer.
While basics are great, there's plenty here for the more advanced users including using Skype with other hardware and software (eg, wireless devices like cell phones). The authors also walk you through the security aspects of Skype - absolutely necessary these days.
Overall, a great book to own and keep handy as a reference for expanding your cyber knowledge.

Best book on Skype add-ons and tweaks to get to to work the way you want

Skype is a simple to implement Voice Over IP (VOIP) solution for the average computer user. If you are tired of long-distance charges, want to be able to tell when someone is online and you can call them, chat in a secure, encrypted environment, engage in video chatting with others, or call someone who has a regular phone system at substantially reduced rates then Skype may be the product you need. This book covers installation, configuration, and basic usage as well as configuring advanced features and personalizing your Skype. While this is useful, I found the software to be so user friendly that it was easy to figure out most of this by just exploring the basic options of the system. That being said Chapters seven and eight were well worth the price of the book by themselves. These chapters cover software and hardware add-ons that can greatly enhance your Skype system and make it work the way you would like it to. The final two sections of the book cover setting up Skype in a business environment and writing custom interfaces to it by accessing the Skype API. This section includes important information on how to set up Skype behind a firewall. Skype Me is a highly recommended purchase and a great way to access the VOIP world for anyone with a computer and good Internet access speed.

Perfect Skype book

Skype Me! is the perfect introduction to Skype for users of all skill levels. It could serve as an example of how to write a product-centric book that delivers real value. The text is well written, clear, and focused. The material becomes progressively complex as the reader moves from learning about Skype, to installing it, to using it, to extending it into areas I hadn't previously considered. Anyone who wants to get the most out of Skype should read Skype Me!

I believe Skype is an incredibly intuitive and simple piece of software. I didn't spend much time with the first four chapters of the book, since I think the ease of installing and using Skype is one of its main attractions. Beginning with Ch 5, however, author Michael Gough started expanding my sense of what could be done by Skype. With advanced features in Ch 6, software add-ons in Ch 7, and hardware accessories in Ch 8, I was entering new territory. The material was well-covered.

I have no real concerns with Skype Me! I have a minor issue with the author's suggestion on p 270 that using a 900 MHz cordless phone is a sign they need to be "upgraded". A 900 MHz cordless phone is a great way to avoid interference in the 2.4 GHz range used by modern wireless networks and newer cordless phones. I would have also liked some expert commentary by a security professional regarding controlling Skype in the enterprise.

Overall I highly recommend Skype Me! I would feel comfortable sharing this book with my parents as a way to encourage them to try Skype. I would also share it with friends who want to tinker at the edges of traditional Skype usage.

The Skype Book Everyone Needs to Read

Skype Me! is a book that everyone needs to have. It's less technical than Skype Hacks, which makes it more accessible to non-techies. Gough starts off with basic lessons about VoIP, Peer-to-peer technology (as it's used in VoIP), even Skype security. These basics will help anyone who is looking at setting up Skype in their home.

Installation is covered in Chapter 2. Gough gives detailed instructions on testing individual computers setups to make sure that Skype will work properly, and shows how to install Skype on Windows, Pocket PC, Mac OS X, and Linux. Then, in chapter 3, he covers the basics of using Skype.

Gough spends a lot of time on using Skype from Pocket PCs, even Pocket PC cell phones and smart phones. This is something I'd never thought about, honestly - my cell phone bill is pretty small, and we've got a good family plan. I can see where people who use a lot of cell phone minutes each month could save some money.

Skype Me! also goes into detail when it comes to implementing Skype in a business setting. This is one area where I think that Skype is being under-utilized. There's a perception that Skype is for home users, but isn't powerful enough for enterprise use, but it's clear that Skype is a lot more powerful than people think. There's a lot of potential for business use - especially when you look at the call center hack that I mentioned in the review of Skype Hacks.

One disappointment I had with Skype Hacks was that it didn't really talk much about the Skype API. Skype Me! does this in chapter 14, and goes into enough detail that people with a computer background will be able to take advantage of the API in customizing their own installation of Skype. Skype Me! also goes into more detail in discussing the various Skype-enabled devices that are available, or will soon become available. Gough includes mini-reviews of a lot of popular Skype hardware add-ons that will make your Skype experience much more pleasant - and productive.

For new users, Skype Me! is a valuable addition to their library. The fact that Michael Gough is the guy who runs SkypeTips.com and is constantly adding material at that site is just another reason to get this book.

A wild burst of wind speeds the characters on into the nether world of the cyber addict. A delightful bit of intrigue worthy of Ian Fleming with all the wild hilarity of Kurt Vonnegut. In the mid-'80s, Sinha, a London ad writer, became seriously addicted to the earliest and most fanatical internet outposts--multiuser games and bulletin boards frequented by hackers, virus makers, software pirates, dungeons and dragons role players and other "cybergypsies". How this nice married father of two with a new house in Sussex almost lost it all to his modem becomes an enchanting tale, full of jarring, hallucinatory, humorous blurrings between worldly and wired events. So many books have tried to capture the heady horizons and disappointing mirages of cyberspace; Sinha's beautifully written virtual travelogue actually does--at least one strange corner of it.

A strangely fascinating exploration of the dark side of cyberspace, where virus writers, porno peddlers, and fantasy game fanatics have created an anarchic subculture that blurs reality and imagination...Part Dante, part Bill Gates, part Jack Kerouac--however you categorize this bizarre book, it's worthy of attention.

This story lures you along a path of sheer escapism, and just as you are starting to relax in an imaginary world, drops you into some events that humans in very recent time have had to endure. Events that have been readily ignored by most of us in our "imaginary worlds", such as Bhopal and Kurdistan. So relax into the tale, and be prepared for a jolt.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, for two reasons. Firstly, I should declare a personal interest: I was a colleague of Mr Sinha's during the period in which the events (all true, I believe) described in the book took place. Secondly, as a person of similar mindset, The Cybergypsies helps me to keep uppermost in mind the importance of balance, perspective and 'all things in moderation'. It was a privilege to work with Mr Sinha, and a great pleasure to read his powerful, elegant, intelligent prose - without being seduced into buying something! I have no doubt that this book will become a legendary volume, describing the beginnings of the internet. Indra Sinha successfully illuminates the significant events of his lifetime, capturing the essence of net culture. He blends story, characters and background detail to spellbinding effect. The Cybergypsies is a page-turner that left me exhilerated, sated and wiser. Balu, you are indeed a love god. Bomshanka.

IRC is still widely used and a great way to find intelligent discussion

Review Date: 2006-09-04
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is an old technology by Internet standards, but still a very viable means of interpersonal communication; i.e., chat. Sure there are lots of nutcases out there, but you can also find people who can provide help on a wide variety of subjects (i.e., programming in specific languages), discussions on almost any subject (which is not to say they'll be intelligent or reasoned).

There's not much flash or glamour to be found in IRC or the tools to use with it. This book, however, is a great guide to IRC for those who need to know the nuts and bolts of whatever technology they deal with.

Though old, little in the technology or tools has changed since it was published in 2000.

It's an inexpensive and worthwhile addition to any techie's library or for anyone who is interested in enlarging their online social millieu.

Very well written and illustrated guide that starts with the very basics and takes you all of the way through to advanced use. The IRC protocol and client side commands are explored in depth. Numerous clients for Window, OS X, and Unix are covered. This basic coverage, which is about two-thirds of the book ends with an excellent chapter on managing channels.

The advanced chapters cover installing an IRC server, using DCC, and some advanced security issues.

This book sets a comprehensive foundation of knowledge for IRC which is then supplemented by O'Reilly's IRC Hacks book. Beginners looking to get seriously into IRC will want to buy this book. More advanced users will want to look at the coverage of their areas of interest to make sure it's worth the investment.

This is *the* book of internet relay chat.

An truly outstanding book. I have used IRC for many years now, and although I do not consider myself to be an expert-user I definitely know my way around. This book is really the only comprehensize "A - Z" source on IRC, and it is wonderfully-written as both an introductory text for IRC newbies as well as an in-depth compendium for power users. Even after using IRC for so long I could not believe how much I learned, particularly the last chapter which deals with server-side configurations.

Alex Charalabidis uses his expert knowledge of IRC to explain the network's subcultural quirks and expectations in all its many instances, and provides information about IRC on the whole in an amusing, almost rhythmical deliverance. In my opinion, a must read for all IRC users. Even Nick Burns, the company computer guy, suggests it! YOUR WELCOME!!!

Excellent reference, but a bit dated

I am an IRC junkie, so when I saw this book I just had to pick it up.

This book was written in 1999, and it shows. There are outdated server lists and statistics. The attacks described are mostly outdated (who "nukes" "jupes" and "floods" these days? This is only interesting from a historical perspective). The IRC clients described are now of outdated versions, and some of the now popular clients (xchat, irssi) aren't mentioned. The book claims to have a companion website with updates, which I was excited to see, but the site's domain (bookofirc.com) seems to have expired and been snatched up by an unrelated website.

All that aside, IRC is a pretty basic protocol, and most things about it haven't changed a whole lot, so this book is quite useful. It can walk someone new to IRC through the basics, describing what everything in the IRC world is, as well as providing experts with some interesting tidbits. The whole chapters on DCC and CTCP were especially informative to me. Appendix B "Terminology" was great for providing some of the "language" one might encounter in channels with tech/irc-saavy occupants.

The book even touches upon "IRC Netiquette" when it comes to what is acceptable or not behavior-wise in IRC (I think a whole chapter should have been devoted to this, this seems to be a major stumbling block to new IRCers). The fun way in which the author presents this book makes it very amusing to read, not at all like normal techical books (this is something I enjoy about all No Starch Press books).

In summary, this is a very informative book, even for someone like me who has been using IRC for over 6 years, and now run my own server. But it needs a second edition and/or the companion website revived.

This book is written by an experienced IRC user and operator and I can't think of anyone better qualified to write this book. Additionally, his sense of humor makes this book enjoyable to read as you find out about all the features of IRC. This book is useful for anyone who spends time on IRC, from the "newbies" to veteran IRC "addicts" like me. I wish there had been a book like this around six years ago, when I logged on to my first IRC channel.

Among the subjects the authors covers include a brief summary of IRC and its history, IRC clients for UNIX, Windows, and Macintosh machines, how to connect to an IRC server, finding various channels and people on IRC, and also a good description about the dreaded "net splits" and lag you will eventually run into on IRC. I just wish the author had gone into more detail about ways to deal with server splits and lag. Maybe the next edition will cover that.

More and more users are logging on to IRC all the time (which probably explains why it seems there's always those "splits" I mentioned) and this book is an excellent guide to what you can do on IRC and what to watch out for.

I was given your book "Amazing Cat Stories" as a gift and absolutely loved it! I wanted to thank you for your wonderful talents and allowing me to go back in time. I had to send my "Buddy" to kitty heaven this past August and I can honestly say that was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. After 15 1/2 wonderful years of companionship I felt lost without her. After reading your book, so many great memories came flooding back to me. I would defintely recommend this book to any animal lover or for that matter anyone with a heart! Thank you and keep up the great work!!

A wonderful collection of tales that will touch the heart. Particularly the tale of Simon, I found myself sobbing like a baby at the end, which is generally NOT a manly thing to do. The way Snopek write these stories, you can almost feel the characters come out of the pages and touch your heart, too bad they don't live long enough for those of us that love cats. I particularly loved it because of its Canadian content and origins. Well worth the price.

It also can make you appreciate and love your precious pets more and inspire you to take care of them as your most precious treasures., and not to disregard them as soon as they immerge from being kittens to adults. Unfortunately there are still some people who do that because they have neither the patience or the love to care for these little ones for the rest of their lives.

This installment of Timothy Mulder's Moments & Milestones is truly intoxicating. It entwines all the ganglion of passion, true love, dependency and brews a drug stronger than any we have seen in this series to date. Deftly crafted to draw us to the pinnacle of joy, and yet sensng the impending fate of this defining relationship, lifts us to new, but "wuthering" heights. Mulder explores the pain of separation and the tight rope of chemical and sexual dependency as it bubbles beneath a striving for a structured existance. He expresses his personal feelings point-on, but also draws out the reader's angst through Craig's character development. This is a wonderful read that left me on a precipice at the end and wondering if my assumptions will be correct for the next installment, "Lunacy," to which I now happily turn.

It might be a bit presumptuous to declare this installment of Moments and Milestones: Loving - Part Six, the very heart and soul of the book, but it so struck me with its beauty, I was completely beguiled.

Loving - finds the protagonist/author discovering a fairy tale romance of mythic proportions. After spending years developing his sense of self-worth, delineating his own personal ethics and undergoing a comprehensive investigation of self, Timothy Mulder is graced with the gift of true love.
Rooting for this accomplishment came easy for both me and my lover, (We read these chapters together in bed) since we had become so invested in both the character and his convoluted story.

The details conveyed in the initial stages of his romance with his lover from down-under are achingly poignant. Some of the most intensely, erotic interludes. Love and romance portrayed at its finest without ever crossing the line of sleaze or inappropriateness.

I've been living happily in a relationship for over twelve years and Loving has helped to redefine my standards of quality and happiness. At the very least, I'm going to have to give special thought to future birthday presents.

5 Stars of the sweetest love.

I'm not sure I can repeat my original review. I guess it got lost in button pushing. But I wanted readers to realize what a blessing this chapter is in Timothy Mulder's memoirs. To go through life and find a person compatible and sharing that also enriches your life is one find in a million.

To recognize it is even more imaginable. This chapter is a culmination of knowledge practiced with wisdom in a life path that few can claim. He has shared his memories of an everlasting love with the reader and given the reader a chance to live this experience for the short duration of the printed word.

High praise for the writing in Loving that allows the reader into a little bit of heaven.

When I opened the pages of this chapter, a warm comfortable feeling came over me. I wanted to kick off my shoes and stay awhile....so I did. The voice of the narrator was soothing to match the mood of the loving atmosphere that filled these pages of the book. Our hero had found true love and it was the most wonderful thing in the world. Of course when it was time to return to business, I grabbed my shoes and caught up with the author as we resumed our Journey. While I am eagerly awaiting the next installment of this book, The memories of 'Loving' will linger.

My daughter loves me to read this book before she goes to bed. We got it out of the library and now I'm adding it to her birthday and holiday wishlist. It's definitely a "keeping" book as my son and daughter like to say. The illustrations are expertly done, capturing the story so well. Highly recommend this book!

A grand tale for so many of us who, as children, are often frustrated in our efforts to get our mothers off the phone and who, as adults, are often frustrated by our children's efforts to get us off the phone....a frolicking fantasy with words that roll off the tongue and illustrations that amuse and delight! Wonderful! Can't wait for my children to get off the phone so that I can call my friends to recommend this lively, lovely book!

Hi! The prayer journal is a very awesome book. It is just the perfect way to become one with God. Even when you are upset this journal is the way to happiness. God has given my mom a gift of writing and she does it like no other. This journal ROCKS! If I were you I would purchase this journal! My opinion is that this journal brings you close to God like nothing else. I am only 12 but I am a pickey person about books and this one kicks all the way to heaven with Jesus Christ! See ya in Heaven!,

Chat with God is a good book to do your prayers on because it is a prayer journal...it's a cool book...I use it everyday at school with my whole class. My teacher, Mr. Pike, likes it and he uses it too. I love the book because I write from my heart. My mom uses it every morning. My dad uses it at work. It helps him when he is stressed out.

A Balanced Conversation

Chat with God keeps it simple and more importantly balanced. This tool helps readers to be a bit more intentional about prayer. Rather than offering a series of requests and pleas, readers are coached to contemplate God's nature, express thankfulness, and offer confession as well. Use daily, weekly, seldom or frequently. My experience is that it leads to more consistant and more balanced communication with God.

A gift to all of us!

Jennifer Webster has designed an easy to use tool that encourages all of us converse with our personal Lord and Savior. For those who are already journal writers, this is the book for you! For those who are not...this is a wonderful way to structure your prayers. The journal helps me focus on more than the laundry list of prayer requests that often consumes my time with God. Chat with God is the best prayer journal I have ever seen!

this book starts off with regular characters facing real problems. In this book the author uses real scripture from The Bible. This book uses these characters to show there are other answers than the only ones you might be able to think of, like GOD. In the Chat Room with God is a book that i would recommened to anyone. It can help you with many problems. After you read this book i also recommened looking up the verses they used in this book. They will be located in the bible.

I read this book on a plane and must say that it's extremely well-written and will definitely resonate with Christian teens. The characters are very well-developed, and the Hafers use the chatroom-style format quite cleverly, using it to tell a nice story arc and not just as a gimmick. I highly recommend it.

I absolutely loved this book. Not only is the content socially and culturally relevant, but it is presented in a way that reaches teens where they are, as they are and with the respect they deserve. I even found myself marking off pages I found especially insightful! I highly recommend this book for all teens facing the difficult challenges of life today. This book is definitely worth checking out!!!

Wow -- this is a great book. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could! The characters are believable, and you find yourself truly caring about them as the story progresses.

This is a unique book, and it looks cool too. I like the cover and the way the pages look like actual computer screens. This book lets you enjoy a great story and learn a lot about God in the process. I highly recommend In the Chat Room with God

I used the Chat Pack with my advisory students for 2 years so far (6th graders, 7th graders and now 8th graders). One of the purposes of advisory is to help students bond as a group. Research shows this bonding to a group helps students experience more success, less at-risk behaviors. By now, my students ask to have another question to answer. It is a great opportunity for students to share what relates to them and others to get to know them better. I do this during the 8 daily minutes we have, if we have time after details of the day. They never tire of doing this. It is also lovely for me to get to know the angels in my advisory.

Pick any card and use it as a starting point for everything from a smart one-liner comeback to an all-night in-depth conversation that will let you learn about your family and friends from new and different perspectives. For example:

* "If you could have any object or place to yourself for one day, what would you choose?"

* "You've been given the chance to travel into the future to see how the world will change over the next 50 years. What in particular are you most interested in?

* "If you could enter a race horse in the Kentucky Derby, what would you name him?"

I promise you that once you get the party started, nobody will want to go home!

I purchased this little box of cards at a Christmas sale. My 11 y.o. son started reading the questions after Christmas dinner. A whole new world opened up to our family. Once you start on these cards you will realize how little you knew about your famiy, friends and others in your life. This was one of the most meaningful purchases of my life.

Never thought so much fun could take up so little space!

My sister received this as a gift from a co-worker and she brought it to one of our family's Christmas gatherings. I don't know if it is marketed as a game, but we treated it as one, with everybody taking turns drawing the cards and allowing everyone to answers. It was a blast!! We had a really wide age range and everybody got into it and enjoyed it. There were questions like: What is your all time favorite scene in a movie? If you could have 50 pounds of something (not money) what would it be? If you could be the apprentice to someone, living or dead, who would it be?
I got to learn a lot about my relatives, even my own siblings, and it got everyone to join in on conversation together. I would totally recommend for your next gathering, small or large, to keep the conversations fun and exciting:)
