Excellent "Glovebox" Guide

This is a great book for when you need to find an affordable quality wine in a hurry. It puts the annual wine competition results into a consistent point system, so you can compare all wines on an "apples to apples" basis. It gives you those results in a clear, easy-to-scan graphic format. As a result you can quickly see which wines scored highest. You can also see which ones give the most bang for the buck. I keep a copy in the glovebox of my car, and now I find that the wine I bring to a party never disappoints.

I like lists that are well organized and help me make good buying decisions fast. This book does that perfectly--- organizes wines by variety then, within each variety, lists the wines in order of their average score in taster competitions. The big payoff is another list that lists the wines by value (taster points per $). It's great. It's not for reading about wines it's for buying them.

We own a truck camper carried by a diesel truck. We used to stay on the highway so we didn't get stuck on a country road trying to find a service station offering diesel. But with the help of this reference, we were able to map our itinerary to take us from CA through AZ and CO ending in SD and back through MO and UT on some beautiful country roads because we knew exactly where the diesel fuel was. We were able to call ahead to some stations to confirm they'd be open if we were driving through at an odd hour. It made for a much more pleasant and relaxing adventure.

Great book to start your photo selling business.

Review Date: 2008-11-29
I have purchased Photographers Market for several years and they are about the best book around for giving you places to sell (the use of) your photos. Not only magazines but business periodicals and even galleries are listed. Also some brief info on how to go about contacting these places. Probably now one of the most important is how they want images sent. Some want only digital, others will take slides but no prints, others will want only medium or large format. A must have.

Life is better when you have a direction to go in

I got this book for my daughter who is a natural when it comes to photography. It is a hobby she just seems to have an "eye" for. It came to my address and I took a look at the book just to make sure it was what i thought it was and was 'right' for her. It got ME excited, and I havent taken pictures in years though my eyes and mind never stop thinking about what a great picture some of the things I see around me might make. I cannot claim whether or not this book is ALL inclusive, but it was very clear that it was pretty darn close enough. I think any one can have a great talent, but like a person dropped in the middle of a large lake....it is so much better when you have a direction to go in. Why swim in circles? Take the pictures you want but know at the same time what you might DO with them and where you might sell them. You'll be able to enjoy a hobby fully and at the same time possibly make or supplement a lifestyle or living.
good luck to all the photographers out there

I was very impressed with this book. It lists 300 great web sites for pet lovers separating them into very helpful categories. From dogs, cats, rabbits, iguanas to rats and gerbils. The dog section is big, listing great sites from dog breeds to vet info to card making. It has got a pretty big cat section too. My thoughts are, if you can think of a pet subject, this book probably has it listed. If you love surfing out pet sites, you will love this book. It is a great reference book to have on your shelf. It comes in handy when you have a quick thing you want to look up regarding pets but are not sure where to start looking.

Incredibly Useful!

Hiking in Northern California
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-30
I have been leading hikes in northern California for 15 years and have hiked all over America. I have over 200 outdoor books, mainly trail guides. On a recent trip to Lassen National Park, Mt Shasta and several nearby locations, I took John Soares book. This was after reviewing several of my guidebooks for the locations I knew I would be hiking. I felt before going that John's book was the best guide for the area and that was validated after the trip. The directions are great for locating trailheads. I have the 1994, 2000 and 2008 versions of the book and it just keeps getting better. Additionally, as directions change over the years, so do Mr. Soares updates, which is particularly helpful. The maps are great and I love the color photos, although I know that increases the cost of publication.

I saw several new places and the guide was always with me. I would highly recommend it to anyone would wants to see some of the best outdoor locations in northern California.

Mostly in and About Mt. Lassen

Review Date: 2007-04-08
The old saying "You can't judge a book by its cover" simply does not apply to this new edition of '75 Hikes' by John R. Soares. Indeed, the cover photo of Mt. Lassen reflected in the pristine waters of Lake Helen is almost worth the price of the book itself. If that photo doesn't sell you on the joys of the southern Cascade range, nothing will. As soon as I saw the cover, I was already dreaming about another visit.

Just as Mt. Lassen dominates the cover of this book, trails in and around Mt. Lassen Volcanic National Park dominate the text. Although the book has 5 chapters, each corresponding to a specific area, the first two make up almost 2/3 of the hikes described here. This is as it should be. Mt. Lassen is probably the most accessible of the major peaks in the Cascades. The rest of the park is also heavily geared towards hikers: numerous lakes, peaks, meadows, cinder cones, waterfalls, and thermal features invite hikers to linger in this remarkable place and Soares does an excellent job of describing short and long hiking opportunities for these destinations. Most of the routes he suggests make for pleasant day hikes but he also includes numerous backpacking options.

The material for Mt. Shasta and Lava Beds National Monument is understandably more limited. The main thing I got out of this section is that if I want to climb Mt. Shasta I should sign up with a guided expedition. I have lots of hiking and backpacking experience at high elevations, but none with ice axes and crampons on glaciers. Judging by Soares's descriptions, this is an absolute necessity for a successful climb on Shasta. Soares does list several options for hikers not intent on bagging the summit.

On the whole, this is an excellent guidebook. If you are interested in hiking northeastern California, '75 Hikes' is a good starting point. All the classics are included: Burney Falls, Captain Jack's Stronghold, Bumpass Hell Themal Works in Lassen Park, and many others. Nice black and white photos accompany the text which is well written and moderately humorous in places. In all, this book is a worthy investment for any vacation in the region.
