Josh Hamilton, through his performance in the 2008 baseball season, was given the platform, to be able to have a book published about his life. The book detailed much about his drug use and stays at treatment facilities. I was impressed by the story of his resilience and the people who stood by him, especially his grandmother and father-in-law. His story also shows that even though his parents supported him and traveled with him during his first two years, one bad decision can snowball into many more poor ones. This is a great book for baseball fans or those in recovery from drug addiction.

I bought this book for my son, who plays college baseball. It was to be a Christmas present for him, but I decided to read it myself. I picked it up at 4:00 one Sunday afternoon and could not put it down, I finished it the next night. A 'must read' for anyone interested in baseball, or anyone who is searching for help. Josh's biography is written to help others who may be tempted - and who isn't tempted' A beautiful story of how, when we surrender our problems to Christ, no matter how big, He can help make our dreams come true. Thank you Josh for sharing your life story and your faith in a God that is bigger than any problem.

I received my book on a Friday. I had it finished by that night - I couldn't put it down. My wife started it as soon as I was finished, and she had it read in less than 24 hours. I have loaned it some other family members, and one of them just read it in one day!

Thee book is an amazing chronicle of the highs and lows of Josh Hamilton. You are with him not only when he is the #1 overall draft pick in Major League Baseball, but also during the darkest moments of drug addiction. It is also an amazing, but not overdone, story of faith that is honestly and compellingly written. You will be moved and inspired by this young man's life and struggles. Read this book, and I can just about guarantee that you will not be able to put it down.

This book is very difficult to read at times, but it's an inspiring story of courage in the face of horrendous obstacles.

The thing that strikes me the most about this book is how honest and thorough Lynn Tolson is when she describes her thought processes during her downward spiral. This book really gets into her head and allows you to experience her mental illness. She also describes in detail new ideas from therapy that helped her overcome her past, leave her abusive husband, and create a life for herself.

This book paints a frighteningly vivid picture of Tolson's father's paranoid scizophrenia, as well as her brother's and mother's defensive, rigid thinking. I think that anyone who has experienced mental illness in the family will identify with Tolson's story.

However, the descriptions of the abuse that Tolson suffered were pretty upsetting to me. I think it's courageous and inspiring that Tolson has told her story, but it's not easy reading. I found myself absolutely furious at Tolson's mother, father, and brother at times. The subject matter of this book is devastating, and it's not for the faint of heart.

If I had one complaint about this book, it's that it seems to be self-published (I think?) and there are some places where it could have definitely been improved by a professional editor. However, the important thing is that the voice and the story are all the author's own. I do recommend this book to people struggling with trauma and/or mental illness. It's a story of hope and authenticity.

Lynn Tolson brings truth back into the American Family. She releases an inspiration that uncovers this very truth; the loss, betrayal and dysfunction as well. In her book, 'Beyond the Tears'; Lynn expresses how her family's dysfunction, her understanding of personal childhood demoralization, and the bases for keeping it in for years and burring it with addictions hightened something she didn't know until her eyes were opened through the gift of therapy. She finally knew that she had been suffering from P.T.S.D. (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and sever depression which manifested itself in a suicide attempt at the age of twenty five. Lynn has made a tremendous recovery in her healing and has inspired so many in spite of the turmoil she's had to endure. She is now on a mission to educate survivors and supporters about the effects of sexual abuse and suicide or suicide attempts, and how the two corrilate. This is a subject that needs more research and her dedication to finding the answers is encourageing and enduring. She has thrived above it all and has breathed life back into women and men across the world. She has shown us that the world is much bigger than our own back yards and that sometimes we have to start coloring outside of the lines or stepping over stones to get where we need in our healing. Her book was written in personal narrative; which gives the reader a sense that she is there with you as she discusses her life in detail and her eventual light at the end of the tunnel. Her courage is paramount, as is her story, which resonates with everyone who has the blessing of reading it!

I haven't read a book that I have connected to so well in my entire life. For those that have lived through any type of abuse, this book is a comfort in knowing that there is light at the end of the tunnel. The author, Lynn, leaves nothing behind and embraces her audience with truth. The book is an enlightenment to those that read it. I have felt more compelled to be honest with myself as I flipped through the pages of "Beyond The Tears". I recommend this book to anyone, whether you are just trying to grasp a better understanding or connection or want a truly honest read. I have been blessed by the authors words and inspiration for a brighter tomorrow. Thank you Lynn for an incredibly inspirational book!

This book was referred to me and from the moment that I opened it, I could not put it down. A captivating true story of a young woman ready to end it all and her struggle to survive and overcome. As a survivor myself, reading this book taught me a lot about who I am and the choices that I have made throughout my life. I would definately recommend this book to anyone that has been affected by abuse.

As a male survivor of child abuse, I found this to be an inspiring story of one person's courage to heal from her traumatic upbringing. Child abuse knows no gender. It causes pain and suffering to all those who endure it. Lynn Tolson writes in a clear and driving prose that allows the reader to clearly see life through her eyes. This book shows no bias towards anyone other than the individuals who were abusive to the writer. It took enormous courage to write and publish this book. It has been a healing and uplifting experience for me to read it. I hope that all survivors of abuse will buy and read this. I also hope that those in and interested in the Mental Health field take the time to read and digest this work. If you want to know the type of trauma that befalls a person to attempt suicide, read this story. If you want to believe you can heal from this type of nightmare, I also encourage you to read this book. I'm thankful it was written.

When you get into High School, there is a lot of pressure. Sometimes people ask you to do things you don't want to do, like drinking and doing drugs, but you go and do them because you think it's cool. If you decide to go along with it, you may regret it when you look back. In Bottled Up, the main character, Pip, is stuck in a place where he thinks everything's okay, doing drugs and drinking underage is fine. When he finally gets hit by reality, his principal finds out and threatens him by saying if he goes to counseling and his classes, he won't tell his father, Pip has to make a huge decision. His father is the kind of dad that likes to drink a lot and hits his children. Pip figures that if his father finds out, it might be the last thing that ever happens to him. He agrees to go to the 'stupid' counseling and tries to find out who he really is. A good reason to read Bottled Up is that it captures you attention, where the reader could get through this book in a matter of hours without putting it down. It makes the person reading the book feel as though they are really there, right with Pip every time something dramatic happens. Another good reason to read Bottled up is that no matter if the reader is a teen or an adult, this book can still be related to their life. If they are an adult, the reader might being seeing things from a different view, being a parent. The best reason to read Bottled Up is whether the reader is a male or female, the book is still fitting. Even though Pip is a guy, girls still go through the things he does. Whatever age and sex the reader is, the book can still be related to. In conclusion, this is a great book for all teenagers in High School and parents. It focuses in on the trouble of being a teen when you start heading the wrong way. This book shows that no matter how far you go down the wrong path, you can always turn back.

A documentary of child abuse & murder.

Review Date: 2008-04-12
This book is a documentary about the abuse, torture, and murder of a three year adopted child in the small town of White Bear Lake,Minnesota in the year 1965.

The prosecution of this unthinkable crime was sparked by the birth-mother's search for the first born son that was taken from her in 1961. 19 years later she discovers not only that he died at three years of age,but that there were multiple bruises on his body.

What's hard to understand is the fact that many of the Jurgens' family members and neighbors witnessed the abuse and turned a blind eye or "minded their own business". There were a few heroes in the book though, the young woman who reported the abuse to social services, the neighbor who aided the children from Kentucky when they fled the Jurgens, and most of all the adopted brother who testified at the trial of Lois Jurgens.

There a lot of questions surrounding the murder case of little Dennis Jurgens. How was Lois Jurgens allowed to not only adopt Dennis, but later the Jurgens were allowed to adopt four more children after the murder!
How could Harold Jurgens as a father allow the abuse and torture that inevitably led to the murder?

Barry Siegel has written a gripping, detailed account of a case that is sure to leave an impression on any reader.

Chilling Story of Child Abuse in a Small Town

Review Date: 2005-04-26
The 1960's were a different time. A murder case required a witness or a "smoking gun". Battered Child Syndrome was a term that was still just an idea in someone's mind. These two facts meant that justice might never come for a three-year-old boy named Dennis Jurgens.

"Death in White Bear Lake" is a meticulously researched story of Dennis Jurgens. Dennis was adopted at the age of one and placed with a seemingly average family in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. Despite scattered clues that the Jurgens' family may be unsuitable to have children, Dennis was placed in their apparently warm and loving home. The decision proved fatal after Dennis fell down a flight of stairs leading to the basement.

But is that what really happened? The book does an excellent job telling the horrific story of how the system failed Dennis, as well as five other children adopted by this family. It also tells of how politics in a small town as well as the way the laws worked in the 1960's almost prevented Dennis from ever getting justice as well as how people turned a blind eye to child abuse rather than standing up for the defenseless victims. Finally, it tells the story of Jerry Sherwood, the natural mother of Dennis who has not seen him on over 20 years, only to find out he was allowed to die by the society who felt she could not provide the life that Dennis deserved.

The book is meticulously researched and well written. The book is so detailed that it seems that it was written as a movie script rather than a novel. Sometimes the book felt more like reading a long news article. I found the beginning of the book rather slow reading, to the point where I actually put the book down for awhile.

I'd highly recommend the book to people interested in a sad story of true crime. I am not sure if the paperback version contains the photographs in the center, but I would recommend not looking at the pictures until finishing the book. The pictures actually will give away the ending of the book.

This is a very well written book. It is a very sad true story of child abuse by adoptive parents. At the time of 3-year-old Dennis Jurgens' death, most child abuse cases were not prosecuted. Barry Siegel skillfully tells the story of how Dennis' birth mother stirred up interest in his death, just when people were becoming more aware of child abuse cases and physical abuse started to be prosecuted. The story of the town of White Bear Lake is intrinsic to the story. The adoptive parents, Harold and Lois Jurgens, got married in the small town after WWII, in a community of young families geared toward the mother staying home and raising kids. In the postwar suburban world of mom and apple pie, a woman abusing her kids was unimaginable. Lois' brother was a force to be reckoned with in the City Police. He managed to intimidate many who knew the bad things that went on in the suburban home of Harold and Lois. The Jurgens could not have children of their own, but managed to adopt in spite of Lois' history of mental problems. Reading about the hell the adopted children went through is very difficult and affecting. The first child the Jurgens adopted grew up to be a police officer, and his role in the story is very interesting. This is a very sad, very well-written book, one you won't be able to put down.

I found this book to be quite disturbing, it was well written, chock full of information and research. I never knew that before the 60's most people were never charged with child abuse most of the time, because most believed that a parent could never do that to their own child. What I found most horrific was that most of the relative's were aware of the abuse of dennis and turned a blind eye toward that evil woman, lois. And her husband Harold? what a loser! he deserved jail time for his complicity in the crime.

I have used this book for parenting groups, for high school students studying human development, and for individual parents trying to understand how their parenting styles affect children's behaviors. Two illuminating charts illustrate 6 parenting styles for care & nurture, and for providing structure. One of my favorite features is an "Ages & Stages" section in the appendix. Each stage roughly correlates to Erik Erickson's stage theory and outlines the developmental tasks for that stage, a list of helpful as well as harmful parenting behaviors, signs that the stage may not have been successfully completed and ideas for "re-parenting" yourself to revisit that stage. People cannot help but come away from this books with new insights into their own behaviors -- in parenting their own children or reflecting on how they were parented. The writing is engaging, not pompous or stiff. I'm a family therapist, and this is one of my favorite books -- one that I frequently recommend to parents.

I picked up this book before having our first child thinking I would get some insights into how to raise our daughter. What I found was that the book was really for me. Through it, I learned about how I have some of the same needs as children--needs like recognition, feeling valued, loved for who I am, unconditionally.

What's more,it helped me understand better what my needs really are and how to get them met by myself and from others who love me. Most importantly I learned that in order to parent my daugther the I way I want her to grow up, I needed to parent myself and make sure my actions are congruent with my what I want for her. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who wants to create a solid, loving, nurturing environment for themselves and their children.

I can't praise the author of this book highly enough. He has created a comprehensive, readable and thoroughly engaging reference including almost every drug found in society today. The bulleted notes found at the beginning of every chapter were some of the most helpful I have found; indicating risk factors, addiction potential, chemical makeup and street names. Antic dotes keep the subject matter fun and well-cited scientific facts lend credibility to the oft surprising statements. I wish the author had included a more extensive section on legal substances like alcohol, but it's a small issue in the face of all the other information included. A must read for anyone interested in drug culture or for parents seeking an informed point of view on the subject.

Paul Gahlinger does an excellent job of finding "all" of the 178 or whatever number he says is the number of illegal drugs in (I guess) America. He readily admits that the war on drugs is not working, but then compliments the DEA on its extreme efforts to curve the war on them. This is a rather old subject of thought that has been updated time and time again. He is an MD from Utah, so remember that as you read. On many of the issues he raises he is correct, but on several he not. For example, he states that caffeine (on page 180) is "highly addictive, creating both physical and phychological dependence after as little as 100mg a day." Now, if that were true, most of my friends and I would be in the ER every other day!! Goodness. This is totally false and he knows it. Also in the book he includes the deaths of Elvis and Marilyn Monroe to get his point across that almost everything except water is not good for you-- or can be addicting. His data at times is two sentences, and his sources are questionable, because they are not listed. I must admit he covers just about any, and I do mean any substance that could used to make something illegal. But Dr. Gahlinger is missing the point. We also have outlawed murder, but it still happens. There are laws against theft, but people steal. I had a student tell me he gets stoned sniffing gasoline, so does the author want to outlaw gasoline also? The US laws are full of these draconian statutes which give the government unlimited power of seizure already. One legislator in congress said recently the US cannot afford to win the war on drugs because it has become too lucrative for the DEA and other governmental agencies. The author says knowledge is the only way to win the war on drugs..haven't we done DARE for 15 years now? It does NOT work. This is a very good text on the history of illegal drug use, but is a little weak on the pharmaceutical aspects or dynamics of how medications become addictive to human beings. Can anyone say the drug problems of the 70s are any better now, almost 40 years later? I do question some of his numbers and science, but as far as covering a subject matter, this is a fine addition to anyone's library. Just double check the numbers before using it as a reference. guyairey

How can hope live when everything around you is painful and negative? It took inner strength and the memory of the warm kisses received from an estranged mother.

Adopted when they were babies, Jan and her twin brother Joe lived with a lady they would call, 'Mom'. From the time they could remember, three things reigned supreme: Mom was physically abusive, there was no one to save them, and no one to love them. Around the age of five, a tall African Queen, at least that's how she looked to Jan, visited them, showering them with what Jan called a bouquet of hugs and kisses; their birth mother. But her stay was short-lived, and they were again smothered by the cruelty of Mom. The twins responded differently, Joe retreated into himself and Jan became the protector, but they both feared and hated Mom.

Before their fourteenth birthday, the family relocated from California to Mississippi. Jan hoped desperately that it would be a positive change, but it wasn't really. The one plus from that move is it acquainted the twins with their maternal family. Immediately after graduating high-school Jan enlisted in the Marines and began yet another saga of her tattered life.

MY BOUQUET OF KISSES is a painful account of a woman's struggle to rise above the emotional and physical pain which desperately fought to rule her life. Their childhood was full of secrets, with bits and pieces of truth revealed in underhanded and accidental ways. After over thirty years Jan found some retribution and began to find herself. J.D. Anderson shared this story because writing it was her way of releasing the demons that kept her afraid of life. It vividly captures the suffering of young lives due to human fallacies in programs erected to help innocent children.

My Bouquet of Kisses is an emotional life story of the struggles and heartbreak of a young girl growing up in an unknown world. Along with her twin brother, the feeling of being loved is all J.D. Anderson ever longed for. This book makes you laugh, cry, and wish you can save her from this life. From the first page to the last, J.D. Anderson pours out her heart to tell her story and the importance of love and forgiveness.

I really enjoyed reading "My Bouquet of Kisses."It was a page turner. Once you start reading it, I promise, it will be hard to put down because you want to know what happened next and pray for the silver lining in Jan's life. She really had a tragic childhood, but she never gave up. Reading this book will make you laugh, make you cry and make you wish you could have been there for her to give her the love and support she needed as a child. I feel this book could possibly make it to the best sellers list if it can get the right sponsors. I met Jan because of this book. She is in deed a beautiful, caring person as she is in her book. I really wish her the best. She deserves a break.

This book was a X-mas gift. From the first page I couldn't put it down. On every page I felt like I was there. I am a father myself and I wanted to reach out to the author and hug her tight. When I got to the end of the book I wanted more but it was the poem that got to me. It shook me. I became emotional. It tied the entire book together. I had never heard of this writer before. I just found out this was her first book. I can't wait for her next. Right now my wife is reading and enjoying it. Everyone should read this book.

No one in my class wanted to put the book down because Ellie is a girl who doesn't have a mother and her father cut off some of her fingers. But the only people in her life is Dex,Joy,and grandpa that loved her.

I was a student of Mrs. Wattles' English class back in the 90's. I was also a friend of Mandy's.
I try to read this book at least once a year to remind me of the importance of family and why I should live each day as if it were my last. I have battled addiction for years and this book has helped, and still continues to help me immensely!!
I plan on sharing this book with my son in the coming years. He is now 10 years old.
Today, I ordered a copy as a gift for a lady who I work with. She lost her teenage daughter in a car accident a few short years ago. I am hoping this book will touch her heart, as it has mine - and will somehow bring her a sense of peace, knowing that she is not alone.
Mrs. Wattles, thank you for writing this book. You remain in my thoughts and prayers, yesterday, today, and always! Much love to you!

"Today I Smile," offers each of us a glimpse into the raw pain of dealing with the death of a loved one. Readers experience the havoc drug addiction creates for the no-longer-denying-addict and her family. "Today I Smile," is insightful and offers hope to all in the midst of dealing with addiction or the loss of a loved one. I applaud the author's courage at opening up her experience with her daughter's addiction and the grief that raged at her daughter's untimely death. God Bless You, Diane....

I just finished reading "Today I Smile." I was struck by the author's honesty in telling a painful story. This is a well written story that allows the reader into the author's life. I felt as if I knew Mandy. I wanted to hug Kelsey and Diane. I highly recommend this book, for anyone that has lost a child, or for anyone that has a loved one involved in drugs. The story is told without self-pity, only with love and a need to share. There are many important facts that are written for all parents.
This is a "must read."

My greatest fear is losing my son or daughter, and this book was not only heartwrenching, but insightful as well, delving into young people and the continual problem with drugs and addiction. Excellent book, especially for parents or teachers of our young ones.

This book is perfect for anyone wanting to understand this controversial subject. It provides a very scientific look into many long-standing myths associated with the plant and drops humorous comments along the way.

Dr. Earlywine's book "Understanding Marijuana" explains the uses of marijuana on a level that can be understood by all readers. Remaining unbiased, he combines the political aspect to the benefits of decriminalization the substance as well as the harmful effects and beneficial uses. The long term research becomes clear as the author takes you into a world not clearly understood by most in everyday society. This book comes highly recommended to those who can benefit from Dr. Earleywine's years of dedicated research into the variations of the legalization of marijuana and in my opinion, the end of the tireless "war on drugs".

I first experienced pot at age 16 and soon learned that what little I was told was NOT TRUE. This book lays it out in all its splendor. It is not a harmless drug- but it is the next best thing. The pharmacology section was very useful as it explained the way THC is produced and broken down by the plant. On the way up to THC Cannabidiol is produced. Cannabinol is produced as the plant starts to break down. The medical section is fabulous. I was not aware of its medical applications fully until I became a Medical Assisting Student and was placed as an intern in a Multiple Sclerosis practice. This drug does wonders for them! Few knew about it. More need to learn about it. That and I just love the look of those leaves! They are Serrated!!

With all of the misinformation circulating about cannabis over the last 70 years its nice to have a refreshing, scholarly, intelligent review of the subject. I wish everybody in the country who had anything to do with the War on Drugs - from both sides of the debate, would stop bantering about unsupported nonsense and old cliches about that vegetation and look at the evidence, the history, and see the nonsense that is currently floating unabashedly about on that subject. Thanks Dr. Earlywine for your significant effort to try to get out the facts. Del
