Curing a Marine: I want to be cured, not perpetually sick
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-17
Dick B. has written two major books on the cure of alcoholism. This is the cure that every single early A.A. proclaimed. His later book is When Early AAs Were Cured and Why. It's a what they did, and how to do it today book. And it's a pip. But the introduction to the idea, the refutation of perpetual sickness, and the historical backdrop of the real, early A.A. Christian fellowship, Bible ideas, cures, and message carrying will be found in this book. It carefully explores the obvious meaning of cure. It carefully explores what the Bible has to say about cure. It carefully reviews the history of cures through the ages, as well as the specific cures of alcoholism before, during, and after A.A.'s founding. And it wowed me! I'm a Marine vet, and I looked for success, not failure, health, not sickness, victory, not defeat. And I find it with my relationship with God and His son Jesus Christ. I tired of hearing alcoholics and addicts dampened in their enthusiasm for sobriety and recovery by the doleful statements that there is no cure for alcoholism. It rankled me as a fighter and vet. What it really did for me was to show me the depth of believing, study, obedience, and love for God that enabled the Akron A.A. pioneer Christian fellowship people to be cured. And they said so. Hurrah for this positive note.

The Power that overcomes the Powerless Paranoia

Yes. Alcoholics can be cured. And A.A. Pioneers said so.
Here's the book where Dick first began cutting the thread between Bill Wilson's 'powerless' alcoholic and A.A.'s original reliance on the power of God for a cure. And such a statement still raises the hackles of the died-in-the-wool fanciers of old, weak, shop-worn 'sick forever' ideas that crept into A.A. and 12 Step groups with the failures of therapists, the failures of treatment programs, and the rim-running by unbelievers who feel it's more important to be untainted by religion than to confess that God can, did, and does heal alcoholics. Dick's book shows the origin of the fallacy of no cure for alcoholics. The idea didn't come from God or the Great Physician Jesus Christ. It didn't come from the Good Book. It didn't come from the early A.A. Christian Fellowship program developed in 1935. It came when the Devil introduced the effectiveness of temptation over the effective fervent prayer of righteous men. Take a look at the Book of James, the early A.A. favorite. Read the first chapter on temptation. Read the fourth chapter 4:7 on submitting yourself to God, resisting the devil, and watching him flee. Read Chapter Five on the effectiveness of prayer--the chapter that guided the pioneers in their surrenders to Christ and their believing. Stick to the impotence of God if you want to remain sick. Look to the cures by God if you want to get well. And that's what the pioneers did.

I have had the pleasure of studying under Covino in a writing workshop, hearing him during a live reading, and purchasing and reading his book. It was rainy in Salt Lake City, Utah, when I entered the auditorium. Covino captured the whole audience immediately with his presence, voice, and words. His words have an amazing way of being both objective, yet strong with feeling. His creativity and perspective is unique. He gets into the work intensely, and personally, and manages to ride the balancing act of idiosyncrasy and universality. The first time I read the book, I was also looking at a lot of paintings, and musical dance performances, and Peter's book added immensely to my experience. After owning the book for over 3 years, having re-read it many times, it continues to be a favorite. I highly recommend the book to anyone as it will be a valuable part of any experience.

I had the good fortune to hear Mr. Covino read some of these poems at a recent writers' conference. At the time, I was overwhelmed by the passionate intensity of his reading, and could only speculate on his state of mind when he wrote them. Having since read them myself, I find the words often "jump" from the page -- due to the highly-emotional nature of the work. Every reader will respond to a work of art somewhat differently, and I, for one, saw two overarching themes: the psychopathology of the nuclear family, and Mr. Covino's ultimate redemption and reconciliation of that long-endured pain through his embrace of Art. His sensitive soul somehow learned to seek salvation in the World of Art, to which he makes frequent reference. That World provided a prism through which he could better understand both himself and those around him. We should all be grateful that he decided to join that World and become the fascinating wordsmith he reveals himself to be in this volume.

I was lucky enough to hear Peter read from his book as well as from a few new pieces. The experience blew my mind. Peter has the ability to make you laugh and cry in a single poem. He touches us in a way to excite as well proclaim our weaknesses.
After the reading I spent the rest of the night reading the entire book, which was life changing. The book is beautifully designed, and I enjoy the layout. It is divided into three sections, which focus on the same subjects, and life experiences. The poetry is both narrative and surreal; the imagery is breath taking, and heart breaking.
This book changed the way I'll look at the world, I can't see it in the gray light I had before. No because of Peter's book I can be both grateful for the things I experience as well as those that I haven't. In the end everyone should take the time to read and absorb part of this book. A true poetic gem, not to be missed, or over looked.

As a college counselor I have recommended this book to numerous students (both male and female) who have been in abusive relationships and are trying to break free. Dr. Nelson has done an excellent job portraying the characteristics of the abuser and the feelings of the victim. I would strongly urge anyone who may think they are involved with an abuser to read this book. It also is an excellent resource for those in the dating world to heed the red flags of abuse. It is a lifesaver.

It has been two years since my ex-boyfriend attacked me. And I am only now allowing myself to open up to a new relationship. This book gave me permission to let go of the hurt and confusion. I now have the tools to tell the difference between someone who will hurt me and someone who will care for me. I have asked several of my friends and family members to read it. The information is invalueable to all.

This book has been a tremendous guide in understanding what my rights are as an abuse victim and how to best use the court system. I found the "Escape Chapter" very helpful in preparing to start my new life without my abuser being able to locate me.

There is great comfort as I read this book knowing that someone out there has put together information that will make me and my children and other family members safe!

Building Healthy, Constructive Relationships
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-22
It's not always the catastrophic event that destroys our relationships; indeed, the most perilous of dangers can be those that do subtle, insidious damage - often over time rather than all at once. In Destructive Relationships, Dr. Jill Murray inspects with us the beliefs, feelings, and actions that serve as foundation for our connections to others. She identifies the symptoms, causes, and consequences of destructive relationships. And, in the process, she provides for the reader a toolbox of skills and attitudes necessary to build positive, healthy relationships.

Through a variety of case studies, Dr. Murray illustrates the warning signs of destructive relationships. Importantly, she defines and describes the many types of abuse that can occur in a relationship: physical, emotional, sexual, and verbal. She demonstrates clearly that these abusive relationships can cause immediate or long-term, slight or devastating damage - to us and to those with whom we connect. And on an optimistic, empowering note, the author provides for the reader a blueprint for changing the dynamics of current and future relationships.

Destructive Relationships is an important book for anyone interested in establishing and maintaining healthy, positive relationships. Readers will learn to identify and apply those attitudes and skills that best nurture healthy, positive relationships with others. In doing so, they will better equip themselves to build interpersonal connections that are safe and solid - physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

While there are many types of destructive relationships this book deals primarily with abusive ones. These relationships may be between husband and wife, boss and employee, friends, parents, children, or any other group of people. The relationships may be physically abusive, or they may be emotionally, sexually, or verbally abusive. "Destructive Relationships" walks the reader through warning signs that a relationship might be unhealthy by defining what is normal and what is not. The authors follow that up with an excellent look at self-esteem issues and how to deal with them effectively instead of using ineffective coping mechanisms. Finally Dr. Murray shows you the pathway to a positive future with healthy relationships.

The sections on the consequences of abusive relationships were exceptional. They defined not only the consequence but also the various ways in which those consequences manifest themselves. Each section then ended with an activity you can do to help lessen the power of the consequence. There is also an excellent chapter on dealing with abusers in the real world.

"Destructive Relationships" is a highly recommended read for many people: for anyone involved in such relationships and blaming themselves, for people who seem to always be getting into abusive relationships, or anyone who knows someone in such a relationship. It is not a miracle answer, but a pathway that the person must travel to achieve freedom from the grip of low self-esteem, emotional fear, shame, guilt, and other consequences of destructive relationships.

Excellent information in a well-written, easy to understand format. The author obviously did a great deal of research on various theories and came up with an exceptional manual. Well worth the price. The only thing I would have liked to have seen is purchase prices/ information on the packet of forms that accompany the classes.

Although I have been conducting men's groups for several years, I am always on the lookout for new materials - especially material that focuses on teaching communication, conflict resolution, and self-esteem building skills. This manual not only provides excellent handouts and suggestions for these kinds of activity, it also provides a very comprehensive overview of theories in common use and gives pros and cons about their effectiveness. I am delighted by the holistic approach the author takes and can hardly wait to put these concepts and activities to use. The text is arranged for a 36-week progam but the author has shown, in the introduction, how this material can be adapted to fit a 52-week program or shorter programs - very helpful! The only criticism I have to offer is, although an audio tape accompanies the text, no notice in the ordering information was given concerning the handout packets that are also available. I would have liked to include an order for this material when originally ordering the manual - even at an additional cost, those handouts would have allowed me to integrate this new material into my groups immediately. Thank you, Dr. Wexler, for this excellent book. We facilitators in southern California recognize the progressive and comprehensive programs being developed in San Diego and are "borrowing" many of those concepts.

As a counselor who has ran quite a few groups for male perpetrators of violence, I heartily recommend the wisdom of Wexler's course. Noting both the strengths and the weaknesses of the Duluth approach, Wexler integrates Self Psychology, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and other useful approaches into a package that challenges abusive beliefs and attitudes, educates men about the triggers and consequences of violence, and emphasizes the respect, empathy, and ability to confront needed by good DV counselors.

Comedy, love, loss, drugs and sex fill the pages in this MUST READ novel from first time novelist Sagona.

Dan has created a must-read for anyone interested in the topic of doping in sport. It's easy to get caught up in the doping scandal of the moment, whether it's Marion Jones, or Roger Clemens, or Floyd Landis. Dan provides much-needed perspective, by giving us more than 100 years of doping history. With this perspective, we can see that no decade in the modern era lacks a doping scandal and no sport is immune from doping.

The book should be mandatory reading for every media talking head. Too often, we take the most recent doping story du jour, and attack the alleged doper as single-handedly corrupting our youth and destroying sport as we know it. Dan points out a bigger truth: doping is out there, every athlete has the opportunity to dope, and we fail to understand the problem if we focus on demonizing whatever athlete is currently connected with doping in the headlines.

In order for Dan to give us this kind of 50,000 foot view, he's had to keep each of his doping stories short and to the point. Often, I found this frustrating -- just as Dan got me hooked on one doping story, he'd move on to another. Many of these stories deserve their own books (and quite a few DO have their own books), but I think Dan's book serves a different purpose. It reminds us that these stories are NOT unique, that doping is now woven into the fabric of sport.

"Dope: A History..." is a well-balanced and informative book that brings clarity and perspective to an oft and all too easily misunderstood topic. Given the spate of doping scandals that consistently hit the news these days, it is timely and relevant. Daniel M. Rosen's writing is concise yet easy to follow, offering a wealth of historically grounded facts and interesting anecdotes. This book should be required reading for the professional - athlete, coach or official - as well as the lay person.

A must for any sports fan

Dope provides a complete and engaging look at the role doping has played in sports over the years. Until very recently, most governing organizations and governments actively encouraged doping amongst its athletes. As pressure mounted, these organizations served platitudes but turned a blind eye to the actions of its athletes and coaches thus tacitly endorsing the practice. Finally in recent years, we are seeing the beginning of a real culture shift. We have come a long way in just a short time.

Mr. Rosen covers all sports from Olympic to US professional sports providing detailed information on the BALCO scandal. There is just enough science to understand the narrative but the author is able to steer clear of sounding like a medical textbook.

Given the backdrop of the current Olympic Games and some of the stories surrounding mysterious changing passports and other suspicious activities this book could not be better timed.

Instead of leaving the reader suspicious of any athletic accomplishment, Mr. Rosen leaves us hopeful that a clean sport is quickly descending on most athletic fields.

Informational Structure of Policy Analysis: Dunn's approach

C. Nicandro Cruz UNAM. México

This book is an precise and extensive endeavor for understanding the problems, boudaries and potential use and application of knowledge for improving governmental performance.

Te basis of Dunn's approach to policy analysis, is that it depends to the production and transformation of five policy relevant information (about policy problems, policy futures, policy actions, policy outcomes and policy performance) through five policy-analytic procedures (problem-structuring, forecasting, recommendation, monitoring, and evaluation).

Perhaps the most important distinction is that problem structuring, "...which affects the use and asessment of the other four procedures, is really a metamethod (method of methods) that funtions as central regulator of the overall process of policy analysis." (page 65)

This analytical framework provide one of the most single effective way to analyze public policies and government programs, where the most important analyst's role is both to generate useful knowledge for decision making in all phases of policy process, and to generate plussible arguments by analythical procedures.

It is an ideal book for bachelor and graduate students interested in public problems that face governements, and in the role that can play all policy analyst in policy making.

Dunn's contribution to the study and use of policy analysis in academic and professional activities its out of question. 06-04-200
