This is by far the best relationship book I have ever read. It is straight-forward, practical and packed with useful information that both single or married women will benefit from. I had the opportunity to see Dr. Grace Cornish on FOX-TV News and she was so awesome that I attended one of her booksignigs in New York. The place was packed and the store sold out of all her books while she was there, so I bought my copy on-line. I read the entire book in one day, but I keep reading it over and over again--especially Chapters 2,5, 8 and 11. I realize that a few her past books have been written specifically for black women, but THE BAND-AID BOND is for "all" womnen, regardless of race. I'm a Jewish woman and I have learned so much about my relationship choices from this book. Thank you Dr. Grace Cornish. Keep writing for "all" women. I love your book!!!!! I recommed that "all" women read it, and buy copies for loved one, or as gifts for friends or co-workers. (I bought three for my cousins). I want to know about all future books written by Dr. Cornish.!!!!!

Dr. Grace Cornish speaks to her readers in a straight-forward, no-nonsense manner that gets to the heart of the many relationship issues that are unique to women of color. Dr. Cornish has been a frequent guest on my call-in radio show, Say It Loud, on WILD-AM 1090 in Boston, and every time she's on the phone lines ring off the hook and the ratings go up. Her books - The Band-Aid Bond: How to Uncover the Hidden Causes and Break the Pattern of Unhealthy Living; You Deserve Healthy Love, Sis!: The Seven Steps toGetting the Relationship You Want; 10 Good Choices That Empower Black Women; and 10 Bad Choices That Ruin Black Women's Lives - have helped thousands of African American women to solve the relationship puzzle, find the love that they deserve, and lead fuller, happier lives. Grace's personality and expertise combine to make her the perfect radio or television guest.

BEST WORK TO DATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have read other books by Dr. Grace and while the others are great, this is her best work to date! Written in the sisterly style that has become her trademark, Dr. Grace uses the personal experiences of herself and others (whose identities have been changed to protect them, of course) to help anyone who is looking to have healthy love relationships. The information, as it is presented in this book, will help anyone (male or female, in my opinion) to get out of their own way, make better choices, and get on to the business of healthy loving! This book gave me a lot to think about and I had a very hard time putting it down. If you are reading this review and are feeling unsure about whether or not to purchase this book, I STRONGLY URGE you to get this book, and then check out the other books in Dr. Grace's collection. They definitely give you more bang for your reading buck! P.S. I'm looking forward to the "Sacred Bond" book that was mentioned in this book as being the next book to be published as a companion to this 'Band Aid Bond' book.

This is an excellent book for all professionals in the area of helping victims of domestic violence. The book is also educational for students studying areas such as Victimology and Domestic Violence. The author does an excellent job providing detailed instructions on implementation and information on the prevalence of domestic violence. The book serves not only as an informative guide for educating people on the reality of domestic violence but also serves as a tool in helping survivors of intimate partner abuse. One of the greatest things about this book is that it's extremely easy to read and the interventions models are easy to understand and follow. I highly recommend this book for a professionals and students!

The second edition of Battered Women and Their Families is the only book of its kind. Each chapter in this collection is as compelling and well documented as the next. This volume is highly informative, especially regarding crisis intervention protocols. It should be on the shelf of every hospital and treatment center. Writers go into theoretical depth in arguing for an interdisciplinary approach to address client needs, for example, battered women with substance abuse problems or children who have abused and abusive parents. Graduate students of social work and counseling will find much relevant and useful information here.

State of the art resource for helping professionals!

Battered Women and Their Families (2nd edition) is a book that every clinician should own. This book provides the expert in domestic violence, as well as social workers and other helping professionals working within a general private practice, a step by step treatment approach for victims of domestic violence. Background of the problem is discussed in section I detailing the scope of the problem, crisis intervention, and short-term treatment approaches. These first four chapters detail each step in the treatment process to assist clinicians to build treatment protocols: a first step in evaluating practice effectiveness.

Sections II and III illustrate the problems and interventions of children and adolescents from violent homes and battered women respectively. Treatments and solutions are outlined on the micro-mezzo-and-macro levels of practice with these populations. Section IV covers special populations (the elderly, substance abuse, & lesbians), and section V deals with cross-cultural issues, policies, and practices with battered women. Each of the chapters takes great care to cover current trends and treatment practices providing a magnificent state of the art resource for social workers and other helping professionals. This is the most practical book I have read on family violence intervention.

This book teaches young women how to keep themselves safe from so many kinds of dangerous and inappropriate situations, from crude remarks at school to violent attacks, date rape, and even kidnapping. It helps young women think about situations they may be faced with, and make decisions now to protect themselves in the future. Mrs. Wardwell seems to really understand teenage girls, and she communicates well with them as she "talks" to them in this book. I am definitely going to have my ten-year-old daughter read this book now that I have finished it. I think every woman and young woman need to learn the safety tips this book contains.

Because I Love You: The Silent Shadow Of Child Sexual Abuse by psychotherapist Joyce Allan (Coordinator of the Chid Development Resource Center and past Fellow at the VFH Institute on Violence, Culture, and Survival) is a compelling and revealing report on the psychology, beliefs and values underlying the child abuse associated phenomena of silence-keeping, not only by survivors of child abuse, but by their friends, family, and communities as well. The format is a compelling memoir, enhanced and informed by the expertise of a trained and experienced child activist. Because I Love You is strongly recommended reading for professionals dealing with (and students studying the psychology of) child abuse in general, and what the author describes as the "ecology of child sexual abuse" in particular. Because I Love You is a welcome contribution to the national dialogue regarding the sexual abuse of children, and in that regard is recommended to the non-specialist general reader as well.

Thank you, Joyce, for this vulnerable and important work. You may save a child from being abused today.

I was deeply moved by this book and its authentic and sensitive treatment of a subject seldom spoken about. What gets into headlines is shamefully limited in understanding of the scope of the problem, and only with understanding will victims and perpetrators alike find the courage to seek help. And, the understanding needs to come from all, not just those directly affected, because our lives are all intertwined. What hurts one of us hurts all of us.

We must educate ourselves and this book has opened both my mind and my heart.

Up to Date Addictions Counseling Text!
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-29
I've been morose for years about my inability to locate an up to date and comprehensive addictions counseling text. Most of them seem to have been written twenty years ago, or accept traditional "faith" models uncritically, ignore research, and/or have no coverage of crucial topics such as ethics. So it was a pleasure to see that Myers and Salt have come out with a top notch text, one that can be used at community or four year colleges. FINALLY, coverage of case management, ethics and confidentiality, VERY up to date MICA section - sophisticated coverage of personality disorders and AOD. Stages of change, REBT, Patient Placement Criteria, you name it, its there and its the latest. I'm familiar with these folks from the addiction studies educator network, which explains the ability to soak up the good stuff. I hope this text will help some of the "dinosaur" training programs out in the "boonies" to modernize and help our students become employable in the health care industry as it is today.

Trying to stay current in this field isn't easy. First of all, you are constantly hounded by traditional dogmas that don't give a whit about research about "what works". Second, you have people whose first layer of identity is not addictions counseling writing from their limited perspective. Third, counseling texts often devote too much space to pharmacology and stuff which belongs in another course (and there are a trillion books on drug types and effects). Myers and Salt have written a real insiders book on treatment and counseling. It cuts to the heart of the counseling relationship, its crucial issues and problems, and the nitty gritty of screening, assessment, intake, on top of the clinical picture. Everything you need to know, in short. Wish I'd had it in my coursework.....

I think that it is a fantastic book for anyone that has come from a dysfunctional family in any shape of form. I thought at first that because my parents werent alcoholics it would not help me but I was wrong. If you are prepared to change and break the pattern that you have seen in your family and in your own behaviour this book can help you to understand that you are not alone and that those feelings that you have are normal.
Reading the experiences of those people in the book it helps to try to get an inside into your own behaviour and feelings, it is a great book to help you through your own discovery as it triggers memories and feelings (at least it did it for me)

Even though I didn't grow up in an alcoholic home I did grow up in a dysfunctional one. Most people come from dysfunctional families of some kind, only the lucky few miss out on this grand adventure...lol! I enjoyed this book immensely and highly recommend it to anyone interested in understanding themselves, their families of origin, and their current family situation. Many nuggets of wisdom in this volume. A true blessing to anyone looking for emotional healing.

Review Date: 2008-05-02
This is an extremely useful and honest book. Cafardi has been involved in the legal and canonical issues surrounding clergy sexual abuse of minors for many years, and he has a sharp eye for interpreting the law, analyzing trends, and pointing out inconsistencies. In this book, his clear delineation of the differences between adminstrative and penal procedures in Canon Law illuminates the most difficult question of the day, namely, how could bishops repeatedly re-assign sexual offenders. Cafardi sheds light where others have generated only heat. More importantly, the entire text is devoted to the years before the crisis was in full swing, providing the context for understanding how we arrived to our current policies.

But be forewarned. This is a sad, troubling, and disconcerting book.

The American Catholic church faces its greatest challenges

Review Date: 2008-04-03
The American Catholic church faces its greatest challenges from the clergy sexual abuse scandal and its ongoing impact in modern times, even though it has long recognized the problem over its long history. Canon law has been devised to handle such cases, but modern Church leaders favor therapeutic solutions over such precedents - and BEFORE DALLAS: THE U.S. BISHOPS' RESPONSE TO CLERGY SEXUAL ABUSE OF CHILDREN examines these solutions and their lasting effects on victims, social and spiritual mores alike.

Nicholas P. Cafardi's book: "Before Dallas, The U. S. Bishops' Response to Clergy Sexual Abuse of Children," gives us a detailed look at the efforts made by Catholic bishops in the United States as they sought ways to deal with priests who had sexually abused children and teenagers. Cafardi offers an historical synopsis of the crime of sexual abuse as defined by the Church's canon law, and outlines the scope of the problem in the U.S.A. beginning in 1984 through 2002. He also explains why the bishops generally elected not to use canon law to involuntarily remove priests against whom there were substantial allegations of abuse. Cafardi lists the various treatment options open to the bishops in dealing with clergy who were accused of sexual abuse. Perhaps the most interesting chapter [at least for me] in Professor Cafardi's book points out the numerous major efforts of individual diocesan bishops to respond to accusations by victims against priests in active ministry, and to address the pathologies of clergy who abused children. The national body, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, also made some efforts to respond forthrightly to these concerns. Alas, these efforts were mostly carried out behind closed doors and the public found out about them only in more recent years. In the final chapter, Cafardi offers a list of canonical lessons that might be learned from this terrible period in the history of the Catholic church in the U. S. This is a well researched and well written book. The sixty-six pages of footnotes which support and expand upon material in the text are very interesing, and in some cases more revealing than the text itself. The author translates Latin phrases within the text, however, some footnotes are not translated from the Latin. He also includes a useful time line running from 1917 which marks the promulgation of the Code of Canon Law, to 2002 when the Catholic bishops of this nation adopted strong measures (i.e. a zero tolerance policy) to deal with priests who sexually abuse children. This zero tolerance policy states that if a priest or deacon has committed even one substantiated act of abuse on a minor (even if not adjudicated in a court of law) he would be removed from active ministry and never again serve as a cleric in the Catholic church. There is a thorough and useful bibliography of sources.
"Before Dallas," is serious reading that makes a serious analysis of the Church's response to sexual abuse by priests in this country. I highly recommend this book and think it will find an audience among clergy, historians, those interested in canon law, and the reading public who continue to try to understand the history of clergy sexual abuse.

It is haunting and attractive just like you except the storyline to be...then as you enter the mesmerizing world of Dense Lane the young heroine, a teenage girl longing for love beneath the underground, you feel as though you are "her" as she takes you on the journey of her life; through it all, the first loves, the heartaches, the passion, and finally her immense courage and triumph.
The suspense and great narration builds into a smashing, yet satisfying ending that does full credit to Spray's powers of creative invention and great storytelling. I loved this book from beginning to end. A true masterpiece!
