I read a book called Stained. This was a really good book. It is about a girl, Jocelyn, who has been friends with a boy, Gabe, for fourteen years. One day he comes up missing. No one has seen him and no one has heard from him. Joss, Jocelyn, is having so many problems between Gabe's missing and her boyfriend Benny. Her boyfriend wants to break up with her. There are search parties going on for Gabe. Joss is just so confused right now. Joss goes out looking for him in the woods. She finds Gabe but he doesn't want anyone to know where he is. She goes back the next day, but he is gone. Through out the whole book, Joss goes back and forth through each chapter to tell about the past and why things are the way they are now.
I really liked this book. I liked when Joss found Gabe out in those woods. I also liked that Joss and Benny got back together. I didn't like it that Gabe was gone.
I would recommend this book to girls especially because it is more about a girl. People who like stories about girls who fall in love would love this book like I did. This book is for people who like stories that switch back and forth.

A quietly powerful, expertly told tale about an insecure teenage waitress and three men whose lives collide with hers. Seventeen-year-old Jocelyn McGuire is 17, a lapsed Catholic in a community of believers, working in a small-town New Hampshire diner in 1975. Her childhood friend-turned-nemesis, Gabe, is missing. Her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Benny, breaks up with her on the advice of the local priest, who holds a creepy sway over his male, teenaged parishioners. Jocelyn's narration alternates between flashbacks of her history with Gabe, a past that includes a childhood sexual assault, and a present tense account of his disappearance in which she actively puzzles out what's happened. The ending is triumphant with Jocelyn realizing she's not to blame for the way Gabe or Benny have treated her, and with her taking bold action against Father Warren - a move that puts this girl with the "stained soul" squarely on the side of angels. Excellent, finely wrought fiction that will feel relevant and immediate to today's readers.

The characters in this book are completely haunting. Days after finishing the book, I find myself thinking about all of them--the experiences they shared, the decisions they made, the truths they learned. This is one of those books you can't put down, because even when you do, you keep thinking about it. A 5-star winner.

I read STAINED in one sitting, and as soon as I finished it, I started it all over again! While the suspenseful story keeps you turning the pages (Where is Gabe? Why did he disappear?), Jacobson's unpretentious, pitch-perfect writing is making its way to a deep place within you - a place that connects you to all the characters in this book and keeps you thinking about them well after the last page is turned.

the absolute honesty of this book is amazing. it gave me a great insight into the mind of a troubled teenager. i think many teenagers could relate to the feelings and pain of addiction and the fears related to it. a great read for anyone and a friend who is an addiction counsellor found it very helpful indeed. i think the author was very brave to share so much of himself in his writing.

A Taste of Darker Dublin

I picked this book up in Dublin, Ireland while on holiday there in July. If you want to read about a young man who loses his grip on his actions, appetites, sanity and even his soul - then this is the book for you. Written by a young Irish writer, the memoir tells a true story of cannabis, alcohol, LSD, amphetamine and a brief fling with heroin. The writer retains the 'feel' of his youth in his writing. His naivety and recklessness are often features of adolescence, yet for this young man they prove to be his downfall. If this memoir tells me something, it is of the instinct to survive in all of us. An excellent read, and a book worthy of praise for the courage it must have taken to write it.

I discovered this gem of a book in Dublin while on holiday there. This memoir is an account of one young man's journey as he experiences elation and euphoria with cannabis and amphetamine, to the dark and terrifying ordeal of psychosis. In this true story, the author's dream of living while shrouded in a chemical comfort is shattered as his sanity finally begins to erode, and he must attempt to reclaim his mind. Amazon.co.uk and many other european web sites stock this memoir, so if you can't buy it here at home, you can purchase it there. As another reviewer said, this book is a "must read".

Something Special

Review Date: 2005-08-12
'Stoner to Loner' at first seems like the Howard Marks-esque kind of literature that laughs at 'recreational' drug use, and makes light of the ensuing mayhem and camaraderie that is sure to follow. However, this memoir begins in quite a casual and a humorous manner that you think you have bought a memoir that will merely poke fun at drug use. Wrong! The author has crafted this memoir in such a way that by chapter Fourteen you are already knee-deep in psychedelic wanderings, and you, like the author are wondering how on earth you got there. This memoir in short is a truthful, raw and unsparing account of a young man that seems to disintegrate over the course of the book. He changes from a casual cannabis smoker, to a lost, broken young man. He seems to have lost something special on his euphoric, surreal, and finally psychotic journey, and in his writing - it shows. A "must read" for parents or young people. It wouldn't surprise me if Hollywood sees fit to make a movie of this memoir!

Suzanne Thomas effortless arranged imaginative plots with different levels of thrills while never losing the intrinsic value of the story. The novel is a can't-put-it down page turner that follows the lives of the rich and famous in a small southern town in Tennessee. It is a bigger than life story that makes you think is there going to be a tomorrow.

It is a unique blend of southern culture and present awareness. It is a spellbinding read while at the same time informs you of what's really happening in small town America.

Once I started to read this fascinating tale of drugs permeating a small, Southern community, I was completely spellbound! A friend recommended that I read this novel -- I am so glad that she did. It is as though Ms. Thomas was an eyewitness to the horrible events told in the storyline. I look forward to her next book! Excellent....absolutely chilling.....a true thriller!

Fantastic.
The author gives great details and leads you along unchartered trails.

I'm 100% GenX, and non-judgemental about drug use. But as someone from the rural southeast who has lost good friends to drug addiction, I can appreciate the attempt to expose this growing epidemic. This book describes the problem well, and is an exciting read.
Thank you very much for your efforts.

Not a 5 star read because some transitions are obviously mechanical, and a little distracting.

When psychologist Jackie Hitchcock returns to her sleep small southern hometown alongside the Tennessee River to investigate the death of both of her parents, she finds herself quickly involved in the underworld of drug gangs and their powerful allies and accomplices. It's the drug methamphetamine that has swept through the community creating addicts and a drug culture the produce poverty, mental illness, physical health problems, deaths by overdose, and all the corruption of organized crime. Although a work of highly recommended thriller fiction, Stumbling Stone clearly and accurately lays out the growing problems associated with meth addiction, meth labs, associated criminal enterprise, and the difficult struggle of decent citizens and law enforcement to keep their communities free from this 21st century scourge.

I found this to be a great book for anyone who needs to know anything about the relationship between drugs and the person using the drugs. I have also read Dr. Fisher's newest book Rethinking our War on Drugs (Candid Talk about controversial issues) I found that book even better then this book. I would say anyone should read both books. I had the chance to meet Dr. Fisher and I had him sign my copy of both this book and the War on Drugs.

This book clearly explains the relationship an addict has with their drug of choice, so that someone who may never have used/abused can understand the seemingly irrational behavior of the addict. But, the author does not stop there. Harrison goes on to explain various reasons why the addict's family may knowingly or unknowingly support the addict's habit, thus keeping the addict from recovery.

Inspiring and Motivating, not only for smoking...

Review Date: 2004-12-05
After reading the Tao of Quitting Smoking, I highly recommend this book, not only to those addicted to nicotine, but to anyone with an addiction. The most important thing about quitting an addiction/habit is preparing yourself not only physically but also mentally and spiritually. This book is excellent because it touches upon each facet necessary to end an addiction. There are assignments which one can do while smoking as well as a step-by-step process to achieving a smoke-free life.

This book is written in a simple, easy-to-read style not only for adults, but also for young teens. I, especially love that the Author has had first-hand experiences struggling with wanting to quit and in his book, we travel with him on his journey to becoming a nonsmoker.

The book inspires one to achieve their highest potential in believing in yourself that you can do anything that you set your mind to do. He reminds me of Dr. Phil with his no nonsense approach.

A note from the Author.

Hi, I was a 2-3 pack a day smoker when I quit cold turkey. I developed this book from my experiences and difficulties with quitting smoking. My book will help you unlike any other, being that my book heals your soul. Give it a try, but remember, the Tao pronounced (Dao) of Quitting Smoking must be followed as written. It is a book that deals with your mind, body and spirit at different levels. This book is not a book that you can skim through pages or skip sections. The T.O. Q. S works on ending you association, craving, habit and addition to tobacco products. The book will help you understand why you began smoking, why you can't stop and the role Nicotine has on your brain. It is designed to facilitate a loathing towards tobacco. It is difficult to quit smoking if you still have positive associations with the product. Nicotine is a drug. It is not your fault that you are addicted to tobacco products. Please visit my site at toqs.com to learn more.

This book is great for all ages: buy it for yourself, a friend or a love one. Smoking is a slow suicide. It is also dangerous as second-hand smoke. End your addiction with the Tao of Quitting Smoking. Buy my book, read the information from my website, go to the links, join a quit smoking support group and stop paying the tobacco companies your hard earn money to cause you harm.

Good luck on your path to quitting smoking forever. You CAN do it this time. The T.O.Q.S also helps your body deal with the cravings as well as help you with not gaining weight when quitting smoking

Thanks

Review Date: 2004-12-06
Thanks to the Tao of Quitting Smoking by Joseph Weaver, my ten year, 1 pack a day addiction is over. I am not a spiritual person, so I was skeptical of buying a book which labels itself as the spiritual approach to quitting smoking. However, after reading this book, I realized the book is about much more. The secret of this book is to help the reader rid their misconceptions associated with Nicotine, Addiction, Tobacco and Second-hand Smoke. The book goes deeply into the root of a person's soul to discover WHY they allow themselves to smoke. The Tao of quitting smoking is a reader's own self analysis of actions, thoughts, habits and transformation.

What I loved about the book was the chapters, lessons and assignments were extremely short and I was able to smoke while reading the book. There are assignments that the reader must do as a smoker.

The book helps the reader get a grip back on being a conscious being with chapters such as...

Lessons of Simplicity
Non-Judgment
Fear and Courage
Free Will
Our existence on Earth

The book talks about nicotine and smoking in a scientific fashion with the chapters such as...
What is Nicotine
Addiction
Biological Replacement/Emotional Replacement and Constituents of Tobacco
Products and their Smoke
Why we smoke
Research and Statistics

The book also deals with replacing the chemical affects of Nicotine in the brains, such as using Nicotine as a mood enhancer or antidepressant. The bioactive nature of Nicotine cause many pleasure chemicals within the brain to keep the smoker addicted to Nicotine. The book teaches simple meditative-calming techniques to help the nonsmoker balance the effects of lack of Nicotine in the body. The book also teaches the reader to hate everything associated with smoking. It is this passion that helps the nonsmoker never to smoke again.

The book has a short and simple approach to helping one not gain weight when quitting which involves avoiding certain food groups, as well as exercising. I give this book an "A" on inspiring me enough to quit smoking as well as take back the control over my life in all areas. It is a complete self-help book about finding yourself again.

Great Book!

I read this book after trying to quit smoking several times. I have tried hypnosis, other quit smoking books, the patch, the pill and even seminars. I have finished reading the book one week ago. I can truly say that I will never smoke again. Why? Especially because it has been only a week. Well, I just know I will NEVER go back to smoking. The book helped me go inward and build the strenght I needed, so I can say. Smoking is a dead subject for me.

After reading this book, I woke up. The book have me the self control to say NO. The book has a lot of assignment and it takes about 10 days to read this book. You can't read the book in a couple of days. The worse part was when the book instructed the reader to switch brands of cigarettes. The book really helped me go inward and realize that I have the power. It also helped me to HATE tobacco. I highly recommend this book for any smoker, who is still smoking and thinking about quitting.

this is one of the saddest books i ever read.

its about a boy name grady, who was walking home one night when all of a sudden he gets taken into a van where he is raped and beaten up, by two men. grady is so traumatized after what has happened that he cant speak anymore. he feels so embarressed that his parents take him out, and put him to a new school. when he goes into a new school he makes one friend that helps him speak and stand up for himself.

then one day grady runs into his old friends. he feels that if they know what really happened to him, they wouldnt want to be his friend anymore. the opposite happens. when they find out what happened, its his friends that help him move past it, and accept him again.

i was so shocked by how descriptive this book was. every time something bad happened to grady i felt it too. i felt his shame, pain, and embarressment. it helped me understand what really happened to grady. its such a disgusting that happened to an innocent boy and scarred him for the rest of his life.

i love this book and recommend it to anyone past the age of 16.

This is the Story of Grady West, a teen who is dealing with severe issues after he was brutally raped by two men. These issues include post-traumatic stress (symptoms of social phobia), and anorexia.
The author makes Grady's self-imposed isolation seem so real, that I found myself feeling isolated from the outside world while I was reading it. Normally this is a good thing, but I felt depressed while reading the book, despite the fact that I loved the story. I would definately suggest reading this book, but maybe read it outside on a sunny day.

Target hits hard from the beginning and won't let go. Grady West has a problem. And he doesn't want to talk about it. To anyone. So he changes schools, stops eating, speaks only when necessary and keeps himself to himself. And if he fades away into nothing--that's good. But Jess comes along. Dreadlocked, fast-mouthed, furiously living Jess who can't stand to see this curious white guy refusing to get with the program. The program of recognizing that Jess is cool.

Kathleen Johnson hits it out of the park with this wonderfully realized novel of friendship, suffering, and the fear of reaching out. Grady is circling the drain and the reader feels the pull with him, the knowledge that any moment he's going down and knowing it might be sweet relief. The reader feels how hard it is for Grady to reach out and hold on.

It's been a long, long while since a book made me feel that much so vividly.

A winner.

It took a true survivor to write down the hurtful memories from childhood like Kathleen Frank experienced.
It is an accounting of what went wrong with systems that failed children. The parents, foster parents, relatives, children homes,
and schools all failed. If only they could be accountable for their actions or lack of correct actions.
I applaud Kathleen, she took a horrible childhood learned that there was a better way to should be done.We can't change what's
been done, but we can improve on things in the future.
I hope more people will read Kathleen's book, and treat children with more respect so they may carry it into adulthood.

What I like the most about the book is that she struggled all the way through her growing up years but continued to endure through all the pain no matter what she went trhough she made it. And later on in life she became what she wanted to be in life. I feel all she went through made a impact on her life as well as others. Get a copy of this book and read it. There is no bitterness in Kathy, no trailing anger, no regrets. She is friendly, warm, and productive. How did she survive what she narrates in her book to become the person she is now?

She tells us the the story of her life with surprising candor and honesty. She does not cry as she talks, she just talks. Her book feels like it might have felt for her to live in the children's home: an endless succession of neglectful, abusive situations that become natural -"normal"- simply because they are the elements of her daily life.

This book is of extreme value to all involved in the care of children dependent on state agencies. A child can usually say little about what is wrong in her life. Often she dos not even know that her circumstances are different. Voices like Kathy's, that rise as an afterthought because they belong to the few really successful survivors of the system, should be listened to carefully. Their message must be used to transcribe the voices of those still being shuffled through the laberynth.

Kathy's book should also be placed in the hands of these children. Her voice carries strength and determination. Her honesty opens doors usually kept closed. Her message inspires. Her book has the power to help plant a seed of self-respect and love in the hearts of those who might be powerless to stop living "temporarily".

This is far and away the best book on compulsive eating I have read. Every paragraph contains a nugget of wisdom, a motiviational statement that shoots straight to the heart, or an insight that will leave you breathless if you share this affliction.

If you have a problem controlling your eating -- if you eat from stress, from boredom, from emotion, or if you just find it difficult to resist temptation, or stop when you start ... you HAVE to read this book. Rather than start ANOTHER "diet" next Monday like you always do, grab a copy of this book and start a new way of life.
