Ben Perry is afraid to go to sleep, and so is his beagle puppy, Panda. Even though Ben's mother checks under the bed and assures Ben that there are no boogieman or monsters hiding under there, Ben is still afraid, especially when he sees the dark shapes of the tree moving outside his window.

Ben's other two beagles hurry to comfort him, and beagle Penny tells Ben a story about when she was afraid on the Fourth of July when she was just a puppy. Will Penny's story help Ben and Panda go to sleep?

Sleepytown Beagles: Penny's 4th of July is a book geared for children ages four and up. I read the story out loud to my two-year old and my five-year old. It held their interest, though it definitely isn't for two-year olds. My five-year old thought the story was scary, but she likes the story enough to want to look at the book and pictures over and over, and has even asked me to read it to her several times.

The book isn't the best written story I've read, but my children didn't seem to mind. The book stresses how nice a place "Sleepytown" is for children (and beagles) and how sometimes we can take wrong turns and go to "Nightmareville" and if we do, we need to turn around and go the other direction.

It also stresses that we need to obey our parents, even if we are scared and just want to run away, because parents know best, so it has some good lessons for children to learn.

Parents might also want to check out their Web site for some coloring pages to print out. There are also some word search puzzles and a word jumble too.

Armchair Interviews says: Story that hits on a child's fear of night.

This book helped me to quit, 2 & 1/2 years ago

I had been a reluctant smoker for 30 years, knowing I was killing myself, but incapable of following thru initial enthusiams of quitting for any length of time. While this book was not the only way I finally quit smoking, it was a substantial help. It gave me a scientific, biological basis for understanding my (to me) freakish addiction that defied my own common sense.

The book was also entertaining. It's not a quit smoking guide. The author never was (foolish enough to be) a smoker. It helped me to see my smoking from the "outside", truly. I hope it comes back in print.

This book may have saved my life. I quit after one read.

Thanks David - I must have read every book in the universe on the subject of giving up smoking. I read your book and was able to quit a 16 year pack-a-day habit, because your book was not about giving up smoking, but ABOUT smoking. Eternally grateful, Jason

A riveting book that is well researched.

A fantastic book that takes the issue seriously. This is a bookfor anyone touched by smoking in anyway. Non-smokers will learn theawesome power of this drug. If your recovering don't pass up this powerful aid to understanding what your up against. There is so much Info in here and it's all valuable to understanding the mechanisms of Nicotine and Smoking addiction. The author is very fair and not trying to scold the smoker he clearly understands how hard it would be to quit and holds off with advice until the end so that you don't feel pushed.

A very useful reference book

This book has been a constant source of information for me as I attempt to quit smoking. It describes the physical and social reasons for smoking, including relevant scientific research, without descending into scientific jargon. Krogh's general attitude toward smoking (objective) made it possible for me to read this book as both a smoker and (future) non-smoker and gain numerous insights into my reason's for smoking and problems with quiting.

An extremely intelligent, comprehensive and rational survey of the sociology, psychology and physiology of smoking. If you smoke, it will help you understand why, in a clear and non-judgmental way. If you love someone who smokes, this book will help you understand why cigarettes have such a remarkable grip on him or her. Not a "how to stop smoking" book, but rather a "how to understand smoking" book that is bound to save a few lives and maybe (in my case) a relationship.

McCoy wrote "Something Happened to Me" in a way to help small children open up and talk about the abuse they've been subjected to. The book is written on a child's level, complete with simple words and drawings, but is intended to be read with an adult.

Research leads to children's book.

Sandy McCoy couldn't find any books for children that focused on sexual abuse so she decided to write one herself. She gathered several adult books on the subject and began researching sexual child abuse. McCoy believes it is important for children who have been abused to know they are not alone and that they are still special. McCoy said she wrote the book with adults in mind, too. It encourages children who have been abused to tell a parent or other trusted adult about what they have been through.

Two young girls had a dark secret tearing them apart. But thanks to Sandy McCoy, the girls and other children who have been sexually abused can get help. McCoy's goal was to validate the two girls' feelings of sadness, anger and confusions and to affirm that they are special and did nothing wrong.

Sandy McCoy can't keep a secret. But that's okay with Rachel and Rebecca. McCoy shared the two little girls' secret with the world and helped save them from continued sexual abuse by their father. The girls' story inspired a 20 page children's book, "Something Happened to Me." The book features hand-printed words and stick-figure drawings and tells the story of a child's very private nightmare.

an insightful resource for helping kids deal with abuse

Review Date: 1998-05-14
Sandy's book is a practical, insightful resource that helps children find the courage to talk about the painful, private issues of sexual abuse. Written in coloring-book style, it offers encouragement, instruction, and hope to hurting children in a safe, non-threatening way. Sandy is more than qualified to offer such a resource to those helping children deal with sexual abuse issues. She has, herself, walked hand-in-hand with children as they struggled to share dark secrets locked in their minds by the threats of the perpetrators of their abuse. Sandy's passion for helping children heal has resulted in years worth of courageous and determined efforts to protect and restore the innocence that sexual abuse so tragically steals from the young. Being someone who works with abuse survivors of all kinds, I highly recommend this book, and wish you the best as you seek to bring healing into young lives.

I was fortunate enough to buy the book when it first came out. I have read the book several dozen times and often use it as a reference.

I have learned alot from this book and it describes the training methods Charlie learned and the transformation to his own training system.

I also have "The Charlie Francis Training System" which is autographed by Charlie. It is a great book for preparing your own training and periodization schedules.

The book is laid out in an easy to read fashion and Charlie knows how to get the point across very well.

I'm very fortunate to have read this book.

The Definitive Book on Sprinting

Review Date: 2008-08-28
I purchased this book when it was first released in late 1990 and have read it cover to cover several dozen times over the years. Unfortunately, most of the attention and commentary regarding this book give a false impression of its content. Though the narrative does culminate in the drug scandal in Seoul, the topic of drug use by athletes (and by Charlie's sprinters in particular) is really of secondary importance and only constitutes a small portion of the book.

Speed Trap is primarily an autobiography of Charlie's career as an athlete and coach. In the course of reading about Charlie's training as an Olympic sprinter himself and the subsequent evolution of his coaching methods, the reader is treated to perhaps the best education on the technical aspects of sprinting ever put into print. From his early training with Percy Duncan and Harry Jerome to his subsequent tutelage under legendary sprint coach Gerard Mach, Charlie describes what he learned from these greats as well as how he synthesized and adapted their methods in developing his own training system. I know of no other book on sprinting that comes close to providing the quality of technical insight found in Speed Trap. To a certain extent, Speed Trap is a technical treatise on sprinting masquerading as an autobiography. While the description of the careers of athletes such as Ben Johnson, Angela Issajenko, Desai Williams, et al., is entertaining in its own right, it also serves to provide anecdotes that illustrate many of the technical concepts discussed throughout the book. Anyone who has met Charlie in person knows this is exactly how he teaches. In her own autobiography (Running Risks) Angela Issajenko describes how Charlie always seemed to have a story to explain any point he was trying to get across to his athletes.

Even on the topic of drugs, Speed Trap offers insights not found anywhere else. Most if not all of the literature related to anabolic steroids is dominated by the field of bodybuilding and to a lesser extent powerlifting. Charlie explains how steroid use by sprinters and similar athletes is a world apart from bodybuilding. As an example, in her first year of steroid use, Angela Issajenko's total dosage for the entire year was about 700mg, an amount many bodybuilders would use in a couple days. Much of the discussion of drug use by athletes is part of the larger topic of how sport is administered by the various governing bodies around the world. Charlie provides a very sobering insight into the bureaucratic and often corrupt nature of international sport.

Lastly, in addition to the quality of its content, Speed Trap is also remarkable for the quality of the writing. The narrative is written in a very conversational style that makes it very easy to read. Having met and trained with Charlie on a couple of occasions, I can attest to the fact that the book reads pretty much the way Charlie talks. I cannot recommend this book more highly for those interested specifically in sprinting or just training in general. If you can find a copy, it is well worth buying.

Talks the truth about track and field

Even though I know drug use runs rampant in track and field today, this book presents a side of the sport that dearly needed to be said. Most people have been too scared to publicly talk about it which I applaud him for. This book also brought to my attention the new style training methods on speed which I found extremely helpful. I would recommend this book to anyone who thinks Maurice Green or Donavan Bailey aren't on Steriods or any other form of banned ergogenic aids.

Tremendous Read

Review Date: 2006-07-02
A well-written book. I highly recommend this to anyone involved in developing sprinters, as it sheds the light on the techniques of one of the sport's greatest coaches of all time. I applaud his courage to step forward on an issue that is commonplace these days. Both men's and women's elite sprinters are on performance-enhancing substances, and will remain as long as GH and such substances cannot be detected (forever). The fact remains that Ben Johnson performed at the level that he did in a time when all other sprinters were unable to do so. The current sprinters are breaking his record, and are doing so through the same means. Again, an exciting read for coaches interested in following the development of some of the world's fastest men and women in the way that it should be and is done.

Drugs and the Elite Athlete
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-29
This book was written after the Seoul Olympics and after Ben Johnson's 1st place finish. However, the logic and the motivation for using synthetic performance enhancements amongst world class athletes is clearly outlined and is applicable to all professional athletics, not just Olympic level track and field, where the financial stakes are huge for both participants and sponsors, and media attention is unrelenting. Recent revelations by MLB stars like Jose Canseco and Ken Caminiti confirm the logic and motivation so clearly, honestly and cogently outlined by Francis in Speed Trap.

Most disturbing is that there doesn't seem to be any turning back on this path of drug use among elite athletes as long as athletics continues to be the potent economic engine that it is, and continues to hold out the promise of lottery-type earnings to hopeful young athletes all over the world.

I'm a thirteen-year-old that loves to read. I haven't enjoyed twelfth-century books in the past, but this one caught my eye. The reason I enjoyed this book so much was because of it's amazing turn of events. I couldn't anticipate what would happen in this one, as I usually could. If you are looking at this book, I'd say to at least read a couple paragraphs. I'm sure you won't be dissapointed.

Aran's observations of a favored mentor and his romance with a beautiful woman color his life, but violence intervenes and turns a mute boy into a potential sideshow oddity in this story of early France. Spider's Voice, is a fictional account which recreates the story of Abelard and Heloise, 12th century French lovers, and adds many historical insights in a complex plot recommended for mature teens.

In this tale based on actual events, Gloria Skurzynski has captured the passion and horror of twelfth-century life. All the characters were wonderfully developed and believable, and the story so intriguing I couldn't put the book down. There are still so many areas that could be explored, I can only hope she will write a sequel.

Review Date: 2007-04-20
Stream of Unconsciousness is a breathe of fresh air as far as rehab memoirs go. It's a fascinating view of the Southern California elite from the eyes of a man whose perception is darkened by his battle with addiction to drugs and alcohol; and yet, there's a ray of humor and hope that I've found missing from other stories dealing with addiction. Steven George doesn't take himself too seriously and writes with a self-deprecating sense of humor. He shares his darkest and most hopeless moments with gut-wrenching honesty and follows with a description of his arduous, humorous, and beautiful journey to "sober." I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who has a loved one struggling with an addiction. It's an un-glamorized insight into the mind of the addict and the personal hell they live in. For those who are struggling or have struggled with an addiction, this book is, in essence, a true story about a very real hope. If you fall into neither of those categories, Stream of Unconciousness is simply a good read.

I am sorely distressed that this publication is out of print and hope that it comes back into print soon.
This is truly the most refreshing, helpful, and positive publication dealing with the sensitive, distressing situation of childhood abuse and the worries victims/survivors have of the trauma continuing indefinitely and/or of the possibility of their continuing the cycle of abuse.
IMHO, every survivor of childhood abuse, and everyone who loves someone dealing with the aftermath of this situation should run, do not walk, to order their copies...no matter how hard they are to find.

As a professional in the psychology field, each year I present at conferences on the effects of sexual abuse and how educators and counselors can be helpful to survivors. After each speaking engagement, there are people who come forward with comments about their own abuse histories and resulting struggles. When they ask for resources, I always recommend this book. It is very well written with empathy and intelligence, and a refreshing lack of psychobabble. Nothing short of a classic!

I have read this book and feel that this is a must read for survivors of abuse everywhere. This book shows all of us that we are NOT alone when it comes to any form of abuse. This book is also wonderful for getting the word out there that this abuse is very real, and it's time for people to face it head on in order to put an end to it. Too many people just want to turn their heads and pretend that it's not happening. Reality hurts, but it doesn't help others or yourself by ignoring it.

On another note, if you are a college student like myself than this book would be wonderful to use when doing a paper on abuse.

Survive the Shadow Stalker took me through all my emotions! Some of the poems were very disturbing to me - abuse is disturbing! But some sparked warm memories and the strength that "hope" brings! I especially liked "Are the Cows Playing Baseball?" - I see this as the optimist's view that life has GOT to get better - and "The Lingerie Drawer" - this one warmed my heart with thoughts of my Mom and Grandma. This is a MUST read for anyone who loves wonderful poetry and enjoys exercising their emotions!

If you are a survivor of abuse (I am) or know one (I'm married to one), you can't beat the level of understanding this book will give you. It's a look into places I never dreamed anybody else could get to. I truly no longer feel like nobody "gets it" when it comes to the feelings and issues I deal with daily.

I investigate RX fraud by profession. This book addresses a common sense approach to life not only for the addict, but for friends and family of addicts as well. Anyone who reads this book will be moved by the stories contained within, if they have been affected by prescriptions drugs or not. I have used the advice in this book in dealing with the addicts I have encountered. Many have shown interest in reading Ms. Mogil's book and attending RxA meetings. Finally, there is a book that addresses a very significant problem in our society. Thank you.

I think the book is an excellent reference book for anyone addicted to prescription medication and their family and friends. It offers real life stories so that you realize that it (prescription drug abuse) happens to people from all walks of life for different reasons. I liked the that the book explained warning signs for recovery relapse.
The book offers practical, easy to read guidance. I also believe that the author really wants to help others and her insight to the problem makes her advice so much better than a doctor's clinical answers.

This book is so accurate. As an addict you dont feel there is anyone else like "you", but after reading this book you feel a support, because you know that others have and are feeling the same. I would have thought it was written about me at times. This book gives many tools that you need for recovery. I think everyone should read it that has a problem or knows someone with one, but also just to familiarize themselves with the dangers of prescription and over the counter drugs, because the most normal of people can get caught up and out of control before you know it. Thank you Cindy Mogil for such a wonderful insightful-hope giving book.

This is the best book I have ever read having to do with prescription drug addiction. It deals with every aspect of addiction - not only the addict but the families of the addict. It gives wonderful truelife stories and it encourages hopefuleness to overcome addiction. I would like to thank the author for sharing her story and founding Prescriptions Anonymous.

An absolute MUST read,The best RX addiction book around

If you suspect(or know) that you or someone you love has a problem with prescription and/or over the counter medication then this is a must read for the addict as well as those who love them. In reading what I feel is 99% of substance abuse literature available, including medical and clinical sourcebooks this is the only one that truly focuses on RX abuse. Not to say that NA and AA are not wonderful and very much needed programs, but to many, myself included feel they cant relate to the people and stories shared in the meetings. This is the first book of its kind to foucs not only on RX abuse but on the person as a whole. There is a definite need for attention to Prescription Drug abuse and more importantly the Prescription drug abuser, and this book is the perfect start for those who wish to lead a life free from addiction. And, to the Author on a more personal note, I thank you for this book for with it came the start of my recovery and the start of a better life. Best Wishes to all those who are in search of help this a a perfect place and time to start.
