An eye-opening, surprising, frightening divorce possibility.Review Date: 1999-02-03
What I read was very disturbing in that it hit home in so many places. The process and definitions were clear and easily identifiable.
The book helped me understand what's been going on and how it happened. In our case the history has been many many years and the programmers'/ brainwashers' support group includes the mother, stepfather, half and step-siblings and grand- parents (among others).
I suspect that this behavior is very common in divorce situations (with children) in varying degrees. This book should be given to all parents who separate/divorce in hopes that they do better by their children and work together to put their children first.

Sam Spade in the Sexual Fantasyland of BangkokReview Date: 2005-07-09
Sexual tourists are flocking to Bangkok and some of them are ending up in a coffin. Calvino wants to know what's going on while everyone else ignores these deaths.
Calvino knows that if something sounds too good to be true . . . it surely is . . . but he keeps getting sucker punched in the process because he's on his uppers and needs the cash.
First he's hired to deliver a birthday card for $150. Then he's asked to be a body guard for a thousand dollars a day. Who wouldn't be tempted? Caveat detective!
The story has many twists and turns that are nicely tied together before the book ends. There's no lack of action.
The book positively swims in paid-for sex for exploitive men. I doubt if many women will find this book to be appealing.
The best part of the book comes in its development of Thai psychology. The subtlety and realism of the views are interesting to contemplate.
The story's main weakness is its slow development in the last 100 pages or so. This material was pretty predictable and could have been edited down to good effect.
This book will be most appealing to those who always wanted to take a vacation in a house of ill repute.
Christopher Moore is the Tom Clancy of the east!Review Date: 2000-11-07
The author (although living in Thailand) did his research in writing this book by coming to Los Angeles and interviewed various crime fighting cops of the LAPD. You will find this book very enjoyable and hard to put down, not only in the excitment and actions of the story but the fascinating world of the two cultures(East VS West)I.E. The perspective of the Thais point of view as it is compared to the American Sexual psyche.
Another Wonderful Case With Vinnie Calvino!Review Date: 2002-05-13
Vinnie is his usual lovable, cynical-but-caring PI struggling to make a living in Bangkok and live in that unique world where Thai and farang meet. The painful events he has happen to him in the first chapter when he's merely off to deliver a birthday card to a bargirl are the best introduction to both the story and Calvino himself. As expected, the other characters, some based on real expats in Bangkok, are just as believable and just as easy to love or loathe or sometimes do both at the same time; this is indeed a brilliant writing characteristic of Christopher G. Moore. If this book proceeds for you the way it did for me, you'll wipe it out within a day or two but if you're anywhere in Thailand when you do, you might be in a bar, sipping a beer or some Mekhong and feel as though you've transported yourself into the heart of Moore's writing and that Vinnie will be joining you soon for a whiskey himself. If you want fun, fantastic literary work and the most enjoyable means to learn about Thailand, get this book lao-lao. You'll love it!

The narative flows along smoothly while making the points. If a person didn't get it the first time, the subsequent narrative of other people's situations and outcomes gives them another chance to do so.
I know a few people who will benefit from reading this book and will be thanful to Mr. Manville for writing it.

Cool, Hip and Sober is the ONLY "Self-Help" book I have ever read,(on any topic) that I didn't have to make myself read.
Before any form of knowledge or experience can be helpful, it must be transmitted. Bill Manville's, Cool, Hip and Sober flows into the reader's conscious without resistence and therein lies the beauty of this book.

Good resource for Counselors of Sexual Abuse VictimsReview Date: 2004-12-13
Dr. Langberg listed several "indicators" which manifests as chronic symptoms (migraine headaches, muscular tension, TMJ, gastrointestinal problems, anger difficulties and deep grief) or "somatic effects" (though she warns that these are not proof that abuse had actually happened) (88). Emotional aftereffects of sexual abuse include a mistrust of others, fear of intimacy, and a feeling of being "different" (89). Dr. Langberg described child sexual abuse as "tentacles that reach throughout the adult life of the victim" (92). I believe any abuse is detrimental to the person as it is to ministry because it can prevent people from ever being close to others at church. Dr. Langberg recognized that abuse forced people to "live with a split identity...to pretend she was not abused" in order to maintain "even an appearance of a relationship" (128).
I found Dr. Langberg's detailed list of "survivor's needs" very helpful. She tapped into the core of practical ways someone could help a survivor, such as not simply offering help but following up with phone calls, notes of encouragement, and invitations of fellowship (278). Then she listed "hindrances" to helping. For example, Dr. Langberg expressed that counseling survivors is a long process so one should not counsel with the unrealistic assumption that the person will be healed after a few sessions. She also recommended that only trained women ought to "walk alongside" survivors since a male's intervention would probably elicit fear and other negative responses. Dr. Langberg's graphic description of sexual abuse enlightens the reader of the magnitude of evil that is committed upon a child. It is no wonder that the survivor must face many "truths," namely, "I was not the abuser," "I was not protected," "I was a victim," and hardest of all truth- "I am capable of abusing others" (146).
One of Dr. Langberg's treatment methods is to have survivors rewrite Isaiah 53 as a way to draw closer to God by recognizing that Jesus also suffered (150). She included one survivor's gripping reinterpretation, which seemed to incorporate personal hurts of the writer. This exercise allows survivors to realize that they are not alone and have not been abandoned by God despite the emotional and physical torture they had encountered.
In the second treatment exercise, Dr. Langberg uses scripture to restructure the survivor's image of "self." By rewriting a passage in the book of Ephesians as if to herself, the survivor thwarts the untruths about herself-- such as what abusers have said "she was" or what her feelings say "she is" (153). Dr. Langberg relies on scripture as a means of healing survivors and though she understands that the "results" are not "instantaneous," she believes it is a powerful practice because "they involve the eternal Word of God" (155).

A New ParadigmReview Date: 2008-10-01
This book argues very convincingly that alcoholics must unlearn their addiction to alcohol, and the best way to do this is by drinking alcohol while they are simultaneously taking a drug that blocks the biological reward system in the brain that underlies addiction; this process of unlearning is called extinction by psychologists. The research from over 70 clinical studies shows that alcoholics can unlearn or reverse their biological addiction by continuing to drink alcohol while simultaneously taking a safe, non-addicting medication to block the jolts of reinforcement in the brain produced by the release of endorphins each time alcohol is consumed. By following this plan - of ALWAYS taking the medication before drinking, craving and actual drinking levels reduce dramatically. In other words, alcoholics can transform themselves into either moderate drinkers or nondrinkers, whichever they prefer. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who suffers from the tragedy of alcoholism--both alcoholics and their families.

Every clinicain, every alcohol abuser should read this book...The National Anxiety Foundation.Review Date: 2008-10-17
Detail: I am President of the National Anxiety Foundation in the United States. I'm also a clinical psychiatrist with a large private practice, a medical inventor, a clinical professor of Psychiatry at a medical school.
I hope that you will buy this book. I was very skeptical of using naltrexone to treat alcoholism. I tried Revia (naltrexone) years ago with disappointing results. It turns out that American doctors have been misinstructed in how to use naltrexone. I only learned of the general correct way when I met the discoverer of this cure, Dr. David Sinclair of Finland.
David explained how naltrexone should be used to treat alcoholism. I started using it in that manner and, WOW! it made all the difference. I have two failures to eight home runs in my alcohol patients since learning how to correctly use the method.
Roy Eskapa's book explains David's method better than David himself explains his own method (Sorry, David). I learn some new fine point which helps me to provide better clinical care every time I pick up the book. For example, check out page 120 about "Selective Extinction" which David tried his best to explain to me but I just didn't really get it. Roy's explanation of it got me past my confusion. By using selective extinction, it is possible to improve a person's life beyond the miracle of resolving the alcoholism disease horrors. Where there previously existed excessive alcohol behavior, the clinician can shove in its place enjoyment of exercise or some other healthy, socially acceptable and enjoyable activities.
I almost wish the Sinclair Method was harder for patients to undergo or that it didn't work in over 70% of alcoholics. Its Achilles heel is that it sounds too good to be true and people pooh pooh it before they even look into it.
I hope to deliver a presentation of the Sinclair Method to my state medical licensure board. I have physician patients who have run into alcohol overuse and have greatly benefited from this method. I think of this book as "The Sinclair Method of Treating Alcoholism Textbook".
I know that "Naltrexone + Alcohol = Cure" sounds simplistic. But the greatest things are often very simple. "E = mc2" also sounds simplistic. Both took great geniuses to discover.
With all sincerity, I thank, on behalf of mankind, David Sinclair's devotion of his entire professional career to discovering an effective treatment for alcoholism. I put Sinclair on the level of Pasteur. I am sad to see that, as the world was resistant to Pasteur's idea of vaccination, some of the addictive disease treatment movement is quick to dismiss this breakthrough as wrong or ill-advised, conveniently ignoring the evidence such as the Journal of the American Medical Association report showing parity in treatment effectiveness with traditional methods, and the Finnish study showing superiority when used correctly (>70% effectiveness!). I am also sad that years ago, corporations in my opinion may have intentionally or unintentionally misdirected physicians in how to use naltrexone effectively, that is WITH alcohol, not in abstinence.
By bringing this vital correct medical knowledge to clinicians and to the public with your book, Roy, you will have saved more lives than you can possibly imagine doing in your private care of your clients during your entire lifespan.
The National Anxiety Foundation gives Dr. Roy Eskapa an A+ for his superlative book that so clearly and concisely explains Dr Sinclair's enormously effective method for treating alcoholism.
Now there is real hope for all alcoholics who want to quit!Review Date: 2008-10-08
The options available to alcoholics up to now have been limited to detoxification and abstinence. There are numerous programs from AA to food and other therapies designed to help people to resist their craving for alcohol but the program outlined in this book (the Sinclair Method) provides a safe medical alternative which will cure the alcoholic of their cravings over a period of time. The irresistible craving for alcohol is both a learned behavior and a disease and this program provides alcoholics with an understanding of how that behavior can be unlearned and the craving extinguished with a safe generic drug. It is difficult to believe that there is a safe effective cure for this debilitating disease available for anyone who wants to get the prescription. It is difficult to believe that all the pain and suffering associated with alcoholism can be a thing of the past. What is not difficult to understand is that when something sounds too good to be true people will doubt that it is true. In order to accept this program people will have to unlearn much that they believe to be true about alcoholism. They will need to unlearn that the only way to treat alcoholism is through abstinence. They will need to unlearn that the only way to overcome a drinking problem is by submitting to a higher power. They will have to unlearn that in order to stay healthy the alcoholic must remain abstinent. What they will have to learn is that as long as the alcoholic is taking his or her medication before they take that first drink they are actually drinking their way to a cure. They will have to learn that this medication can provide a way for the alcoholic to safely and slowly detoxify and reach a point where alcohol is no longer the major focus in their lives.
Dr. Eskapa presents all the information a person needs to get the cure for alcoholism. It is simple and safe. The book is easy to read while providing a logical scientific explanation of why and how the process works. It is well referenced and indexed and useful for alcoholics themselves as well as professionals who work in treatment programs or others in the medical profession.
I will be purchasing additional copies to share with friends and colleagues.
