Being as I am a fully recovered alcoholic myself, I loved the stories in this fine book, and can relate to them. I work with alcoholics, and have noticed that those who discover a faith in themselves and their own concept of a higher power do make a complete and full recovery from the terrible power of alcohol. This faith is not that hard to discover, and is easiest found by doing the simple Steps. Almost as simple as painting by the numbers. Just go over them one by one, and before one is aware, one is surprised to discover a deep faith within. Funny how it works, once I hit bottom and had no where to go, the simple reading and mediating of the steps is what did the trick for me. The stories in this wonderful book are very true, I know because I've been there, done that.

Many members of AA today currently feel that they cannot recover from alcoholism and they will always be recovering. Through the sharing of experience, strength and hope, the authors of the stories in this book show that recovery is not only possible but available. In the Foreword to the First Edition of the AA Big Book it states that the main purpose of that book is "To show other alcoholics PRECISELY HOW WE HAVE RECOVERD..."

Many in AA fear the word "recovered" because they feel that it means that it will give them an excuse to drink alcohol. Those who wrote the AA Big Book attempted to dispel that fear by giving examples of how THEY recovered. Today, many people are not willing to go to ANY lengths to get what the founding members of AA had but would rather live in fear of that first drink and thus be recovering rather than realize a new freedom and a new happiness.

The main purpose of the AA Big Book is to show other alcoholics precisely HOW we have recovered and this book helps to show other alcoholics that recovery from alcoholism is possible and can be accomplished.

Chapter 5, in action. I am a recovered alkie, sober almost 30 years. I encountered this book from a friend. I now highly recomend it to any new person I encounter searching for more than the current 'teachings' in AA. Anyone who is willing to do the 12 steps exactly as written can attain all these folk have and more. The voices in this book tell exactly how it works. The experience of each writter is believable with no pulled punches. It is my belief this book will be a great addition to any sober alkies library. I like the idea of the same writters telling how they got sober doing the steps, and later describing how they found a 'Power Greater than themselves' as stated in the book 'Alcoholics Anonymous'. I can think of about 25 people I would buy this book for Christmas or Birthdays or just because they're my friends. WPG. Recovered Alkie

An Edited Anthology on Cults and Mind Control
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-17
From front jacket:

"Most people incorrectly assume cults to be small, bizarre religious groups, which attract only the impressionable and unsophisticated. In this...book, Michael Langone and his contributors explore the psychological effects of cultish exploitation as found in a wide variety of groups, from religious fringe groups to New Age, political, and psychotherapy groups. This book is a comprehensive guide to all aspects of the cult experience. It draws on the clinical expertise of treatment professionals and the personal experiences of those formerly involved in high-intensity mind-control books.

The book examines the history of the cult phenomenon, the nature of mind control, the psychological literature on post-cult distress, why people leave cults, exit counseling and deprogramming, and how to facilitate recovery. The last four chapters discuss the special topics of adolescent involvement in Satanism, children and cults, ritualistic abuse in day-care centers, and legal problems that may confront former cult members.

Dr. Langone has gathered a diverse group of contributors from the fields of therapy, psychiatry, nursing, exit counseling, pastoral counseling, and the law. In addition, he has included personal accounts from former cult members. This book makes a strong case for the extreme damage that cults can do to members physically, as well as psychologically and spiritually.

There are specific guidelines for different types of counseling: psychotherapy, pastoral counseling, psychiatric hospitalization, and suggestions for support groups, families and ex-members themselves.

In all cases, the contributors avoid sensationalizing the subject of cults; the chapter on teen Satanism, in particular, seeks to move beyond the lurid stories to explore the developmental processes that attract teens to satanic rituals and the occult. Chapters focus on treatment, recovery, and the post-cult experience."

A must read.

After leaving a Bible-based cult, I have been hungry for literature specifically addressing the needs of cult survivors. As the title of this book suggests, it was exactly what I was looking for. Although the material can be academic and complex to read at times, this collection of articles from the best minds in the field of cult recovery is priceless. This book is a must-have textbook for cult survivors who are on the mend -- especially those who have been out of their cult for a while and have already read several other books on the subject.

This is a wonderful book with plenty of information to help the person leaving a high-control group or cult. The stages of recovery are discussed so the exiting member knows what kind of "head trips" to expect during the mental detox of cult involvement. I highly recommend it.

Whereas Alcoholics Anonymous does not have leaders who promote their personal programs nor does it cause psychological harm, I was involved in a cult with an extremely controlling and harmful leader. The cult I was involved in fits all the criteria that Dr. Langone describes in this book.

This book is wonderful! I laughed, I cried, I felt the way the author must have felt at the time of the letters. The format of reading her (Corinne's) mail made this such a personal book. I am still with my husband, but have felt EVERY one of the authors' issues. The feeling of being alone at a party, The questions, the "looks". WOW...Thank you from the bottom of my heart ((*_*))

Reflections from a Woman Alone held me captive for several hours as the pages turned automatically. The style format varies from letters, to essays, to poems all held together by the skill of the writer as you walk down her path. As her life unfolds, after her husband's death, the reader experiences, the wit, the humor, the depth of loss, the loneliness, the angst, eventually leading to integration. Her learning is shared with the simple statement: "nothing outside yourself can save you; nothing outside yourself can bring you peace." This book passes on the author's miracle, a change in perception, ever so quietly and smoothly from her psyche to yours.

Dr. Armstrong has produced a document vital to the safeguarding of personal dignity in today's world. In language accessible by anyone reading the book, she dissects complex legal matters and lays them out in plain view for all to understand. This book should be required reading for all people tasked with ensuring our personal rights within the framework of our various legal systems. It should also be recommended reading for anyone when the natural course of life puts them in a position of reliance on the ethics and goodwill of others...even those 'nearest and dearest' to them. When we are vulnerable... that's when we need help. This book gives us the ammunition to help ourselves. Everyone intends to survive the journey to the retirement years; this book exposes some of the ambushes that others have found there and lays out steps each of us should take to avoid those ambushes. As proof that fact can be scarier than fiction, this book will curl your hair quicker than anything King has ever put on paper.

An uncoventional but effective planning guide.

Retirement Nightmare isn't your typical retirement guide on how to save up enough money or make investments: its focus is on how to protect yourself from heirs, and chapters survey involuntary conservatorship and guardianships with an eye to revealing how incapacitated seniors fall victim to the statutes designed to help them in their old age. Advance planning is recommended as the key to avoiding situations such as the author's own experience and those described in courtroom cases.

If you are elderly, or even think you may someday become so... then...you need to read this book and keep it close at hand as one of your most valuable reference sources. Dr Armstrong draws on her tragic family experiences with involuntary guardianship litigation and combines that with excellent and scholarly research, to produce a book containing historical background, the law, a broad range of case studies covering most aspects of the subject, and many answers/recommendations concerning this potential problem that we might all someday face. The appendices covering the various state laws and hundreds of resources for the elderly, are alone worth the cost of admission! I found the book to be alarmingly informative and I feel much more knowledgeable and secure now that it is sitting on my research shelf.

Finally the real truth about this national disgrace!

This is a must read book about the truth of the rampant fraud and abuse of conservators and guardians. While this author writes about family members trying to get "Granny's dough", she does touch on another perverse type of guardian, that is a "court appointed" guardian. In Florida, and in many other states, they only require a high school education and a 40 hour course. But whether educated or not, from the lawyers/guardians in the recent New York case, to the high-school educated sociopaths here in Pinellas County, Florida, they are getting away with fraud and abuse.
To avoid a guardianship in the State of Florida should be of paramount importance. Find out how to protect yourself and your loved ones with alternatives: health care surrogate, durable power of attorney, mediation and more. Consider that if you leave your parents to fend for themselves, and ignore the deterioration associated with aging, a guardian can gain a guardianship over them and their assets, without informing you. That guardianship will nullify the most meticulous of plans. To really cover your aging parents, make sure they create a "Pre-need" guardianship and name someone they trust, this is the only way predators in the retirement homes will not be able to force guardianship on them. Also create an irrevocable trust.

Full of actual stories of actual individuals, it also makes for eye-opening human interest drama.

Written as fluid as fiction, Wilson has crafted a poignant account of her life that will grip the coldest of hearts. Be prepared to cry, get frustrated, and get pissed (there's really no other way to put it!). After drowning in despair, Wilson saves us with a glimmer of hope, then triumph. With so many details about her childhood, I only regret that I was rushed through adulthood . . . A quick read and quite the emotional rollercoaster, I recommend Rewriting the Script to anyone searching for a highly charged literary discussion.

Arlether Wilson tells a story in this captivating and heart wrenching true-life story - her story. How she was the one, at a young age, fending for her younger brother, while her mom was gone at all hours of the night. Her mother, Maggie, puts more into her men than her own children. When Arlether tells her mother her boyfriend did something no child should ever endure, her mother does nothing, still keeping her man. As the years go by, Arlether is in and out of foster care, enduring physical, mental and sexual abuse. The beatings get so bad she constantly runs away to receive help, but no one wants to listen to her and they keep returning her to the abuse. Through it all, she strives for her education and wants more out of life than how she has been living. She is determined to get out. In her senior year, she runs into another hurdle that sets her back. Despite everyone telling her she would never be able to overcome her obstacles, she proves them wrong by defying the odds.

I honestly was gripped from the very first page. In reading REWRITING THE SCRIPT, I had to keep in mind these are true accounts of the Wilson's story. At times, I was horrified at some of the things she had to endure when she was younger. She refused to let her past determine her future! She was so determined and motivated that she defied her odds and made something positive out of her life. This was a great inspirational read. Definitely a 5 star read.

Because of Rewriting the Script I will never be able to excuse my own lack of involvement in the welfare of a child. I won't tell myself I'm not his or her mother, or it's none of my business. So many times while I read this book, I wondered what I would have done if I had met little Arlether. And what will I do now that I know what she looks like.

My emotions couldn't handle her powerful testimony. I laughed and cried. I was frightened and relieved. I was overwhelmed with an intense feeling of love and a very strong compulsion to hate. The visuals are so intense. They hit you hard and fast. I would have to take a breath, a pause, knowing each time I put the book down I wouldn't be satisfied until I continued her journey.

I find myself looking for her in the faces of children I encounter. Arlether Wilson painted such a vivid picture of her incredible life. How could I ever miss the signs of abuse? She has given me the courage to be fearless in coming to a child's assistance. I'm sorry Arlether had to suffer to become the Advocate. But I'm so pleased she has arrived.

This book is an excellent teaching tool. I hope the right organizations are able to recognize what a tremendous aid it could be for educating the public, social workers and Ministers. God is going to use Arlether's testimony to help so many hurting people. And bring awareness to the abuse so many children live with each day.

It's a courageous tale of an amazing woman. I can't wait to see what God has planned next for Ms. Wilson. I'm sure she's prepared for the challenge.

Reviewer - Sidne Kingston, United Book Club of America, founder of DivineSisterz of Chicago Christian Book Club

It's unconceivable to the mind, devastating to the heart, and a T-K-O to the body.

Rewriting the Script will have you flipping the script! A page-turner that's guaranteed to make you do two out of three things: Throw the book, rip up the book or cry through the book. If you never read a novel that made you call out Jesus name, prepare yourself, for all there is left to say is "JESUS".

This poignant novel is a heart-breaking riveting life story that begins for a young girl at the tender age of five. Can you imagine a five-year-old saying, "He shoved it deeply down my throat."?
Can you imagine being forced to drink a concoction of dead roaches in some form of liquid? These incidents don't even touch the surface beholding in this novel.

The story grips at the core of your imagination vividly of the inhuman characters responsible for the incessant turmoil of emotional and physical damages penetrating the young girl life. As the author chronicles the story, she depicts the demons that plagued her life in such detail that you feel her fear, anxiety and struggles from within those pages. Several times you will cry out, "no more, dear Lord, she can't take no more, please help her!

From within the author, this novel serves as a living witness that you can survive against the threatening obstacles of life's cruelty that steals your self - worth. This novel serves as a walking testimony of faith and strength defying the "generational curses." This novel offers HOPE. A hope that you will succumb to Rewriting your Script as you hopes it to be, not as life circumstances depicts.

I applaud the author; Arlether Wilson for her courageous willingness to expose her life of violence, sexual abuse, abandonment, devastating deaths, incest, & deceit that are now hurdles of victories.

Once you finish reading this novel, you will be compelled to never complain against another thing in your life.
The novel is shocking, its powerful, its heartfelt and it's A Must READ!!

The rating for Rewriting the Script on a scale of 1-5 is a 5+

Libby is struggling against Creation. You know the big debate, nurture vs. nature? Well, either way, Libby is in trouble, with her alcoholic father and a mother who overeats, and whose idea of a wholesome meal is a large pizza from Dominos or a red and white bucket from KFC. But amidst the chaos, Libby is determined to experience It. True love in the form one perfect, unforgettable kiss from the One. And with the way things are going, her dream may not be that far off.

But all of her plans are disrupted when her father's drinking leaves him jobless, friendless, and ultimately, their family homeless. Libby's family must pack up and leave the only home she's ever known and move out in the middle of nowhere. She's devastated, humiliated, and hurt. But slowly she'll learn to find peace within herself, and maybe come to find beauty and life in the middle of the desert.

The Serious Kiss is quite an accomplishment of a first novel. It deals with many heavy issues at once in such a way that you can only feel deep empathy for Libby and at the same time deep admiration for her as she's dealt blow after blow, but still manages to bounce back. The characters are all far from perfect, but each is honest and significant. Hogan has a way with details that breathe life into each element of the story, giving the reader a more realistic reading experience. Eye-opening, a bit quirky, humorous, and poignant, The Serious Kiss is the sort of book that won't leave you any time soon, and it'll very easily become a favorite as this resilient heroine still manages to move on and learn to let go.

I really liked The Serious Kiss by Mary Hogan. For her first book, she did a great job making her characters believable and easy to relate to. Although I haven't had to experience all of the awful things that Libby, the main character, had to go through, I can sympathize with her. I feel very lucky not to have an alcoholic father who loses everything and forces our family to move to a retirement trailer park with a grandma that i've never met in the middle of no where. But most of all, I am extremely happy not to be Libby and have to leave my house, school, best friend and almost boyfriend. This book makes you really think about your own life and hopefully realize like I did, that life isn't always as bad as it seems. Things could always be worse ot could even get better.

The Serious Kiss is a great book. I love all of the crazy characters in this book. It's about a girl named Libby that has a crazy family and her best friend and she had made a deal that they each would have a serious kiss before the end of the school year. But everything goes wrong when her family moves to the desert and she finds out that she has a grandmother that she thought was dead and they end up moving into a trailer park. Her grandmother had the trailer put right next to hers, which makes everything even worse. Her dad and her grandmother hadn't spoken to each other in 20 years and she doesn't fit in at her new school. Also, her family is different from other families. So if you love the Confessions of Georgia Nicolson series by Louise Rennison I am positive you will like this book also.

This is a very insightful and brave book. The author uses her extensive clinical experience to simplify and characterize a poorly understood and under appreciated invisible form of abuse. She uses examples from her practice of family and marital therapy to illustrate the five perpetualting cycles of emotional abuse. She also is willing to reveal her own story which is a brave and courageous approach. She does this in order to involve readers more completely in understanding how emotional abuse effects all aspects of relationships.

Sarah Kay's book, Setting Yourself Free literally changed my life for the best. The minute I began the prologue, I couldn't believe what a strong grasp of knowledge that the author had on the subject. She hits the nail on the head! After reading her book I knew that I had the ability to make changes in my life. It has been over eight months since I read her book and though some days are rough, they get better and better. Though I have also read many other books on the subject, this one I have highlighted and I always have it close by for personal support. Anyone who feels that their past life experiencees is ruining their life or preventing them from having a life should read this book. Also, AFTER reading Setting Yourself Free, a great follow-up for when the time is right for you maybe, Toxic Parents.

Reading this book helped me make sense from my childhood -- and why I make some decisions I do. It's almost like Ms. Smullens was living inside my head! Now I feel like I have the tools to pull myself together and begin to treat my children more like they deserve to be treated. This book has helped me begin to develop a sense of dignity. Thank you Ms. Smullens for your insight! And thank you for sharing these tools.

This not your usual "do-it-yourself" book with a glib formula to solve serious problems in human relationships. It is rather a guide and handbook which reflects the personal and professional experiences of a wise and compassionate therapist. It presents a philosophy of treatment and an innovative but practical program for those of us who have suffered emotional abuse in family life, career or community (i.e.all of us).Written in a clear and thought-provoking style,it is free of excessive psychological verbiage.I urge you to buy it,read it,study it,and use it!

Many of us have a tendency to let the "past get in our eyes", so to speak, and find it difficult to stimulate and maneuver our own healing, growth and empowerment. Through her impassioned, authentic, soul-for-real writing and exercises, author Shaunelle Curry masterfully moves the reader, from the darkness--spiritual, emotional, or otherwise, to a much lighter place of recognition, comfort and peace. This book is a powerful journey--one that I feel fortunate to be able to take with Shairi. As a freshman project, I can only dare to imagine what Curry will share with us next. Buy several copies, for yourself, for others and enjoy it for the love of words, poetry, and self.

Shairi's Journey is one of those rare life transforming books that is as functional as it is inspiring. Shaunelle Curry's character Shairi speaks to many of my own experiences and of those close to me. It is one of the few books that I return to time after time for inspiriation and practical steps to help me "get over" some of the ruts and depressive moods I get into. It has also been my gift of choice to family and friends this holiday season.

This is a very powerful and engaging book.

This book is not one that you read and then put on a shelf. I have gone back many times to experience the Ancestral Whispers, the awsome exercises, as well as the poetic renderings of Shairi. In reading this book, I also experienced the emotions of love, sadness, joy, fear, anger, elation and self realization. Shaunelle Curry's book will bring growth in all who read it.

Read Shairi's Journey and experience an on-going process of empowerment and self-realization. At first glance, notice the visual poetic presentation of each page "written in sing-song words." Simplicity of this uncluttered, free-flowing format invited my eyes to read the words. And the words, powerful words, reach out, grab and focus attention to the raw emotional state of the speaker. Four of these writings spoke to me and for me. Read the book! At some point you may be connecting the frustrations, anxieties, pain, fear, joy and expectations of your own journey through life. For this purpose the author invites your personal participation in the "Excercises" after each of the nine presentations. She reminds us "Wherever you are now is a minor stop along one continuous journey." Very well written, packaged and presented.

I'm enjoying this highly unique method of poetic storytelling. The reader doesn't just follow and experience the struggles with Shairi. Her journey forces you to take an in depth look at yourself and where you are in your journey. The ancestral whispers and excercises encourage and challenge you along the way. Definitely food for the soul.

This book moved me more than any other book. I felt beside myself right after reading. I could not put the book down, I read it at every break at work and during lunch, and was tempted to during driving but abstained, I stayed up late into the night with it in my hand. It was a moving book, I felt like a needed to change myself in some way after reading it but I did not know how. I have told everyone I could have about it since I put it down, I may read it again.

I have just finished reading "The Shrine.." for the second time. The first time, I cried, my mouth fell agape with shock and I felt pinned by some kind of unexpressable anger. The tears and emotional upheaval were absent upon the second reading (I had recently finish Bret Easton Ellis' "Glamorama"-a gory, macabre tale that surpassed "Shrine's most heinous moments), but that does not mean I was not again affected. L'Heureux may not wow with his language, but he does give us terrific character insight. No character ran full-circle here. Instead, the evolution was constant, as situational changes spark change in humanity. And we do see people in all their hideous, sensitive, symphathetic and confused forms. A stirring read.

A NOVEL THAT I COULD NOT PUT DOWN FOR A SECOND!

John l`heureux one of my faverite authors has once again created another spellbinding novel. A harrowing horrifying novel dealing with the darker side of love and it`s tragic effect on young people. This novel is beyond words its simply a must read for any John L`Heureux Fan.

I usually don't read fiction of this sort, but was overwhelmed when I was finished. In what I found to be a relatively short novel, L'Heureux manages to lead us through these three peoples lives, showing us not the hardships of what a loving, caring family goes through, but what can happen when that love becomes misguided and hateful. Yet, for all the traumatic experiences these people experience, they are the ones who are most just in their absolution, not those who live happily ever after. The atrocity of the actions and feelings the main characters inflict and endure make the outcome that much stronger. What could easily have been another Danielle Steele heartwarmer had the storyline been a bit tamer has become one of the greatest testaments to the power of love, and the destructive power that love carries with it.

Slavery: TheAbuse of A Nation is the answer to many unsolved tribulations caused by Slavery. The writer skillfully guides the reader using revolutionary concepts that are simple yet mind provoking. This truly an ingenious work!

It is the first book that clearly enlightens all of us to the fact that we are responsible for our future destinies. It is the first book that affords both Black and White Americans to forgive the past and move to a more productive united future. If you want to know why Black relationships struggle to survive, this book is for you. If you ever wanted to know the foundational fears that stir the creation of hate groups this book is a must read for you. If you ever wanted to know why so many of our young Black men are in prison and our girls are having babies while they are still babies themselves, read this book.

One of the most profound yet, simple commands given by the writer in this book is when he instructs Blacks to "heal themselves." The writer clearly points out that we have the power to live lives that are free from the intimidating chains of inferiority due to slavery treatment to us in the past and present. Awesome! This kind of empowerment has never been voiced nor written. It is a refreshing word for the cries of Black men who deeply want to feel appreciated, valued as head of household, and treasured as a father. Black men must read this book!

I pray that this book becomes the best seller it is destined to be. Why? Because it contains all of the necessary ingredients to live a free and fulfilled life as an American no matter what color you are.

Awesome book

This book is the best book I have ever read on slavery. The Author takes a very practical approach to answer address some very tough issues. It is a must read for all races. I found it to be deep but easy to understand. It has changed the way I feel about myself as a black man. It lefts my spirit to know that I was not the lazy no good person that I was depicted to be. It let me know that all whites are not out to get me. This book will definitely improve race relationships in America.

While reading Slavery -The Abuse of a Nation, I finally understood the barriers that block unity in the United States.
For many years I was under a misinformed theory that made me feel that White America was not only evil but they were ultimately responsible for everyhing bad in my life. But reading this new revelation I found out that White America was hurt also in another trumatic way. I would certainly recommend this book to everyone. It is the missing piece of the puzzle that has plagued America for generations. I believe this concept should be taught in the schools, universities and the church. Every book club should make this a must read. To get this information into the lives of as many people as possible will be the beginning of a new era void of racism.
