I really liked this book of the way it is written for easy understanding and examples. Also the author is very helpful in adding more insights into the various topics and even to the extent of communicating with one on one. I really recommend this book to any programmer.

I found the book a must have when you begin with CVI. It should be on your shelf right above your PC while you are on your 5th can of coke digging in code at 3 am. I was very pleased that the author responded back to my tech e_mail. He is a class guy. Thank you, Mr. Khalid

This is a really good book for someone who is starting out using Labwindows CVI. I had a little knowledge of C but the book really did a good job of filling in the blanks and refreshing my memory. After only reading the first few chapters I was programing great user interfaces over the GPIB. I have already recommended this book to a number of fellow students.

If you need to use LabWindows/CVI, get this book!

This is truly an excellent book; a real must for any LabWindows/CVI beginner.

Each section uses well thought out examples to demonstrate the features and libraries available to the programmer. The topic areas covered in this book ensure that the user can quickly generate code that will produce professional looking solutions for any application. The GPIB and RS232 tutorials are superb, providing essential background information in both these crucial areas.

A real must for any CVI developer!

As an MBA and a novice programmer attempting to create a professional database application for work there is absolutely nothing better than this book! This book was extremely easy to follow and very well organized. It allows someone with little to no knowledge of VBA the ability to quickly learn and digest complex programming for extremely useful professional database applications. The author Mike (aka. The most helpful person ever) immediately responded to my emails when I had questions!!!! This is an awesome product and Mike provides excellent customer service!!!!

Awesome Tutorial for Beginners VBA

This book makes the basics of VBA easy to learn. This book teaches thru examples. And the tutorial ends when the example database is complete, so you only learn tips and tricks specific to that example database. His method of name conventions, and database organization was great. That is what I appreciated most as a beginner to VBA. I new how to use Access very well, but it wasn't until I start with VBA that I realized how important the names and organization were. There were a few skipped procedures, or wrong referrences but they were closer to the back of the book are pertained to things already covered, so it was easy to assume what step had been missed. Great book!

The layout, the sequence, and the reason I purchased the book was well worth the money. All of the items to keep in mind when creating an Access Application were well laid out and easy to read. I have just a couple of nit-picky things to comment on...
In the preface it mentions that the book was written in England, but uses American English Yet in a variety of places in the book, I would read "colour" instead of color, and yet it had the spelling "color" as well. There was another example of British spelling and American mix as well, but I can't recall it off-hand (I think "realised" / "realized"). I don't mind the British spelling, but it just should be consistent throughout the book.
Another nit-picky thing: Throughout the book concatenation was done like this: [DirectorLastName] & "," & [DirectorFirstName]. This will put the Last Name, comma, and First Name right next to each other like so: Brooks,Mel. It should have been [DirectorLastName] & ", " & [DirectorFirstName]. Then the director would have looked like so: Brooks, Mel. Yes, I know this is minor... but it is consistent :-)
One final rant, that is not so minor. The index is not well cross-referenced. Here's an example: there is a nice exercise about what to do when data entry does not match an item in the "one side of the relationship." This is known as a "NotInList" event. But the index does not show "NotInList" (maybe that is appropriate, since "NotInList" should not be in the index list, or something like that), but I found the index to be lacking in other cross-reference as well. I don't have the book with me right now, but I could find other examples of lackadaisical indexing.
Overall it has the information that I bought the book for (I'm an Access instructor), but I think it could have gone through a bit of polishing before publishing... therefore four stars, not five stars.

A Miracle for those in over their head!!!!

I am not a computer expert, in fact I was only good with excel less than a month ago. I could use excel to do everything... so I thought. Recently I have been on the job hunt and I found one that required "strong" Access skills. I have used access, maybe even made a few wizard approved databases. Let me make this clear, I had never done any VBA coding (maybe not even heard of the benefits or even understood it). After a while on this project I realized I was in over my head, and I wanted to walk out the door. My last hope was to find books to walk me through the process. I picked Access 2003 VBA because it Said the SMART METHOD... not because I knew anything about Mike Smart. I started working through some of the excercises, and found that Mike has a way of explaining the process very very to the point. He held my attention, and basically took the fear out of the programing and just brought me to what I needed to know to get my pay check. I had a few problems along the way. I was ready to run away again, and as a last resort I emailed Mike Smart himself. He responded to my question with in 24 hours. He has been working with me to correct the issues. I could not believe it. Here I am in all alone "pretending" to be a programmer and Mike Smart himself helps me out. I have bought many books to teach myself computer skills, but this one is the best. So if you are in a hurry like I was to learn what it takes to get your pay check you better BUY this book! Mike even told me that he is writting more books. So since that is the case, buy this book and email him or post it here what you would like to see him teach "us" about next. I would like a basic everything you need to know about computer repair, maintenance, and preventative maintenance book. I would also like to see a book on Microsoft Office intagration, how to intigrate everything with real world examples. This book is what you need to stand apart on a job hunt, to prepare a database, and just keep you and your company up to date with all the benefits of Access. You might as well learn Access, Microsoft charges us enough for it, and programmers get paid well. I hope he continues to write more books, because maybe just maybe with his help I can become a real programmer... not the pretender I am right now!!

This is a sensitive and heartfelt book which deals with the life of a man who happens to be bisexual. It is a measure of widespread social disapproval that Will feels forced to use a pseudonym, but a measure of his courage that he tells his story to his friends, and a wider audience who come to feel part of that group, despite this social disapproval. The book is highly original and readable, and in addition displays a delicacy about handling sensitive issues. Although questions about Will's life, and his family, remain unanswered, this is a welcome addition to first-person narratives about bisexuality which have in the main been authored by women.

His good humor and warmth come alive on every page. The pain is there too, but not in an "in your face way." If you have experienced pain in your own life, you will recognize it in his. I felt that a trusted friend was allowing me to read his diary. Whether you are GLBTQ, or none of the above, get this book. This book is well written and layed out. It follows an easy to follow format that allows the reader to view screenshots with instruction, allowing interactive use of the book if you have the software installed. Business Contact Manager can be a little overwhelming for novices or those new to outlook. The author bridges this gap by keeping things very simple for the novice but offering more advanced insights to the power users. This is a great reference book to have for BCM until you become proficient with daily use. Highly recommend.

This is without question the best book available for Outlook Business Contact Manager. We had previously purchased two other books on the subject, however they were both difficult to read and reference.

I am so thankful that I found this book. I keep it right on my desk and if I ever have a question, I can quickly and easily find the answer.

It's easy to use, read and extremely easy to reference. It has become the must have resource for everyone in our office. If you are using Outlook Business Contact Manager this book is a must.

Even though I wasn't sold on using MS BCM, my IT department didn't provide my choice. After reading through a list of books, I settled on this one. It is my first one with these authors and I cannot recommend it enough.

It was well written and comes more from the business perspective, which makes it a real value for me. My IT folks could never have explained to our department as clearly as this book. I found it easy to use and it even inspired me to dig a little deeper into the software.

Thanks for the great text! I am much further along now than I could have imagined. Will be sure to look for more by these folks.

Business Intelligence Developer likes this book

This is a good book.

Business Intelligence is a broad and many times an incorrectly used term. My opinion is that in essence, Business Intelligence is all about getting information into the hands of business users so they can make decisions.

This book is written for the business user. Microsoft is the fastest growing player in the Business Intelligence world. Their strategy is to leverage Microsoft Office to get the information into the hands of the business users. For example, think of how many people use Excel in the business place. That is a huge number of people to tap into who will already know how to use their Business Intelligence tools.

The book uses a diagram to show the Microsoft Business Intelligence platform. Each chapter then focuses in on a section of the diagram. It gives you a "you are here" pointer in the diagram. It gives you and explanation and then an example of how to do the important and common tasks. Each chapter is also independent of the other chapter, so you focus in on what you need to know with no worries that you missed something important in a previous chapter.

I am a Senior Business Intelligence Developer. I build the Data Warehouse and Data Cubes and develop the ETL. I have enough on my plate to keep me busy, but I still need to know all aspects of the platform. If you are a developer, I recommend this book because it gives you enough information to get you up to speed with Office 2007 as it relates to BI quickly. It shows you how to get your KPI's into SharePoint, for example. I recommend the book for developers as well.

While I have considered myself reasonably good with Office, this book dramatically increased my understanding of the power hidden in Excel and the new possibilities of presentation. I would highly recommend the book to any government contractor, even if you haven't upgraded to Office 2007 as the descriptive text and easy to follow examples have direct application to earlier versions as well. I've cut my production time dramatically and, more importantly, can 'slice and dice' the data quicker and with better insight than ever before.

Executives don't have time to read technical manuals or head off to training for a week - we need something that quickly validates our current understanding and then jumps right in to explain what's useful and how to use it. Brief definitions and hints were good. A real step-by-step manual for using Excel 2007.

This book does a good job of doing exactly what the title says it would do. I bought this because at work our company has always lived in a Wintel World. But we acquired another company that was Linux centric and it was clear that us Windows people needed a crash course of Linux. I needed some quick exposure to Linux and a way to cut my learning curve by being able to understand how to transfer tasks in Windows over to Linux. This book shortened my learning curve because as good as the net is about giving information to us for free. Sometimes I just like curling up with a good book.

I've always liked O'Reilly books, and this is no different. It's a small no-fluff reference that makes for a good read as well. The book is physically small enough to fit unobtrusively in your laptop bag without causing too much of a bulge.

Since it is written as a pocket reference, it of course doesn't have all the commands or even all the variants/options for commands. What is does have are the commands and syntax that you are likely to use the most with some good examples.

Just know what you are and are NOT getting. It's not a bible, a step-by-step, or a cookbook. It is (as it is labeled) a pocket reference, at which it excels. Highly recommended.

Explanations are accompanied by tables and examples for maximum efficiency.

Review Date: 2007-08-04
Reese hits a solid triple to start the inning off and scores easily on the wild pitch thrown by the reader who says that the GRANT section is wrong. This book works easily and appropriately at your deskside. I found the book to be a very simple, easy-to-navigate reference text that presents the most important aspects of MySQL in the quickest, most logical manner. It is very easy to thumb through with every possible random page landing at a topic of interest. In a way, it was like working with a familiar dictionary, you know the kind, where you just kind of naturally crack it open near the word you're accessing and flip a couple of pages either direction to arrive at the exact reference location. In that vein, I'd perhaps recommend that the margins contain "bread crumbs" telling us where we are in the book, but it isn't necessary since thicker sections often obviate themselves with just another page turn. Each page does have the chapter title in the margin, so my point is really one of nit-pickieness rather than a true critique. To its credit, the layout of the book presents the content in a manner that follows the O'Reilly "risen bar" standard. It is easy to scan through the entire reference flipping pages as quickly as possible so that you are able to arrive at your sought information within as much as a second or two. The bold text draws your eye to the page and the size of the page allows one to capture everything in a single glance. In my usage of the book, I found it very accurate and useful. I am a regular MySQL user and the formatting is very familiar to me. I highly recommend this book. If you are already familiar with SQL and the basics of database schema design, this is the perfect reference. I found it amazingly faster than loading the MySQL PDF manual and searching through potentially dozens of hits for the keywords sought. Even at the full cover price, this book is a value-added service at my side. The sections on operators, functions, stored procedures and triggers make this book an invaluable tool for the DBA or programmer who knows the material, but fails to remember every single aspect about the syntax AND who is tired of seeing that familiar: "You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near..." The text also finds welcomed complement from the numerous examples of using commands and SQL keywords. They are invaluable for immediately deciphering the sometimes too-numerous options of a command. I don't know that the book has taught me anything new at this point, but it certainly makes finding the details of what I already know much easier. Because of its brevity and its ease-of-use, it has made me want to play around with some of the various features of MySQL that I do not regularly use. That alone is going to teach me something new sooner or later! If your budget is constrained to a single reference item on MySQL, you can't go wrong with this very portable pocket reference. The back cover says: "When you reach a sticking point, but have to get to a solution quickly, MySQL Pocket Reference is the book you need." I agree completely.

Good, but needs updating & improving

If you have read many Excel books, few of them provides the amount of practice problem that you can find here. The step by step guide makes it look easy to the beginner but the tutorials challenging enough for even the advanced users. None other books have as many diagrams to aid in your understanding, and few of them makes you want to find out more about Excel. This book stands out. After reading the whole book, you just need to practice and practice to perfect it. No need for other Excel books, you can trash them.

Best "How to" book on Oracle

This is the best "How to" book on Oracle. I have read around 20 books on Oracle (I reviewed most of them on Amazon) and this one is the most practical Oracle book for intermediate to advance Oracle DBAs.

The book skips most of the architecture and goes directly on how to configure and use some of the most salient features of Oracle 10g.

Some of the examples are:

1)How to manually install RAC instance
2)How to migrate Non-ASM to ASM disks and vice versa.
3)How to collect AWR reports using builtin scripts.
4)How to install CRS
5)How to Flashback Database and Flashback Table.
6)How to Patch Dataguard Instances
7)How to use flashback in Dataguard Standby.
8)How to manually remove Oracle Instances.
9)How to upgrade RMAN Catalog.
10)How to use Wait statistics to measure and improve performance.

Not all the topics are advanced. But it still helps to get down to the fundamentals, even for the advanced DBA with decade or more of experience.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to expand/improve their Oracle 10G skillset.

I recommend this book because it is a solid and real guide to video games. It gives you real-life advice, not hype on the various gaming careers and head's up for anyone that thinks it's all "fun and games". Do you love your family and your free time? Think on that before you become a designer....
