where are we going?

The book is a good attempt at peering into the future of mobile computing. In part, it does this by looking at the recent past, and the various projections made then about upcoming mobile trends. These predictions are evaluated against what actually happened. A sobering comparison. A lot of hype happened in the 90s dot com and telecom era. And mobile computing spanned both fields. Resulting in massive overbuilding of telecom networks and overbidding for 3G licenses. Billions of dollars, euros and yen were squandered in those efforts.

So one lesson from the book is that predictions are always fraught with uncertainty. Hopefully, this engenders some caution and humility amongst the authors of the book's papers, and in the reader.

The book studies future mobile technologies and wonders how these might turn out. Useful research ideas. Though nothing I read here really seemed to be a gripping, Eureka-type vision.

Dr. Edgar's text provides a thurough and engaging look into contemporary issues involving computers and ethical decision making. Designed for a course in Computer Ethics, this text not only provides applied ethics but also gives the non-Philosophy student a good introduction to ethics itself. As a past student in the course, I felt as though the book worked well and provided professors and students alike with much to work from.

Good practical guidelines though repetitive

Good book. List coherently the do's and don'ts of interface design. The kind of stuff you think you know but don't practice. Actually give reasons why you should do it 'her' way but undeniably well-founded. I have used it for teaching HCI for several years now though not as a text book. One fault is that the lists of guidelines are endless. This is always the way with guidelines since they are so easy to give but difficult to follow or to interpret how one should implement the guideline. Still, I commend her section on mental models and screen layout. In particular the latter topic is still relevant despite the progress since publication.

Current user-computer dialogues tend to be one sided, with the bandwith from the computer to the user far greater than that from user to computer. A fast and effortles mode of communication from a user to a computer would help redress this imbalance. We therefore investigate the possibility of introducing the movements of a user`s eyes as an additional input medium. While the technology for measuring eye movements and reporting them in rreal time has been improving, what is needed is appropriate interaction techniques that incorporate eye movements into user-computer dialogue in a convenient and natural way.

I found these book extremely helpful from the aspect of exploring various CSCW issues for mobile informatics. The book touches various facets of life that mobile nformatics would affect: from economic and social to the kind of technical infrasrtucure. Overall the book is very nice.. there have been some other studeis that have taken palce recntly..but this book (or the version that i have) doesnt touch upon..nevertheless it is a great that should be a part of refernce for mobile informatics!

Green furnishes an eloquent survey of modern computing. Not from the technical standpoint. He leaves that to others. But instead he concentrates on explaining possible future trends, that could impact you.

Such topics like data mining and users' personal agents and the rise of various virtual communities. For the latter, we see glimmerings already in economic-oriented websites like eBay, or more general websites like craigslist. Or even in the massive multiplayer role playing domains. The latter may in fact be currently the most comprehensive virtual communities on the net. So he discusses what they might look like, decades hence.

Expand Your Mind

This text is made up of several chapters, each chapter is a separate article that covers a lot of the issues not typically found in the IS curriculum. This text was used for an Information Policy course. I honestly felt that it was a good selection given the content for the course.

Most articles in the text are an easy read. Both managers and technical-types will want to at least consider some of the issues presented in these chapters.
