Where's the information?
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 15 total.

If any research went into this book, it must have lasted about 30 minutes. I expected it to be a serious resource book which listed the many various fellowships and scholarships which truly are available at many different universities and colleges all over the U.S. Ms. Blum has not done the work necessary to make such information available. This book mentions, or describes about one-eighth of the funding that is actually available, if you are truly shopping for graduate study. How this pitiful excuse has made it into a fourth edition is a mystery to me. I guess it has been re-vamped because so many fresh undergrads or recent bachelor's degree students have not a clue as to what may be available. There should be a book (which this one is not!) for graduates who want to continue their academic careers, who do not have really helpful or generous mentors. Such a book would examine our universities in geographical sections, department by department. It would be twice as big, of course, and it would be worth a lot more money on the book market. If a searcher is expecting any real, extensive information from this book, information which is readily avaiable via telephone and fax machine, this one falls considerably short of value.

This book is fantastic!

I felt compelled to write a review for this book after reading over the others that had been written. This book seems to have gotten poor reviews from people who don't have any idea about how to research grant opportunities.

There is no reason in the world for a grant guide to invest 5,000 or so pages itemizing grants available at individual institutions - the most up-to-date and thorough sources for this kind of information will always be the institutions themselves. A quick scan of any grad school guide will indicate which institutions are most generous with funding for a given field. From there, you just contact your top five choices. Personally, I would never spend $100 on a tome that simply duplicates information available elsewhere.

I am equally baffled by the reviewer that complains about the general nature of the entries. If you're looking for degree-specific funding, there are web sites for profesisonal organizations that can help you.

I found this book to do exactly what it should. It provides detailed information about grants that you are unlikely to come across from other sources. After you contact instiutional grant offices and research funding for your specific degree, this book provides a wealth of information about those grants that are more hidden away in the woodwork.

For the 2001-2002 academic year, and as a doctoral student in an obscure humanities field, I have been awarded $85,000 intended to support myself and my spouse during the final phases of dissertation completion. These funds are the product of the information provided by this book, which I can't recommend highly enough.

It sounds as though the other reviewers are disappointed that one volume has not done all their work for them. For this, I would not blame Laurie Blum, but rather, the naivete of these readers.

Many inaccuracies about eligibility for awards frustrating!

The Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowship Awards are described as "fellowships for graduate study in any discipline." The Hertz Foundation awards are for students looking into the application of the physical and technical sciences only!

The Truman Scholarship are open only to college juniors, not "undergraduate and graduate students."

I have only looked into two scholarships offered in this book, and already have found two errors. This Ph.D. candidate wasted his money on this book.

Mostly for PHD candidates

The biggest complaint with this book is its organization. The chapters are broken down with business, law and health all together. Which makes it really hard to find something specifically in business. Another problem is the fact that most of the grants are for PHD candidates and alot are school specific.

Not good for masters candidates

I am a woman pursuing a masters in architecture degree. While the book was well-organized, about 85-90% of the scholarships and grants were for doctoral candidates. Out of over 1000 grants, I only found 6 that I MIGHT qualify for, and three of them I had already heard about through my internet searches. People pursuing a masters degree would not benefit from this book...

You should not be spending this much time on review. Barron's book is just an intro psyc text book minus the pictures. Look for something that reviews instead of trying to teach. This book was a waste of time and money. I got a 730, but it was no thanks to this books. Major concepts that were on the actual test were not in this book. Use an intro text book, ignore this book.

I found this book to be AWFUL! The Psychology review was filled with Tables and recommended you to look them all up in an intro to psyc book. I used this book for 1 week and bought 2 new books. I used Arco's GRE Psychology and the ETS Practicing to take the Psychology Test. These two were very useful. Arco's review was very comprehensive, without the minor details that are not covered on the test.

This book explains some of what you need to know for the GRE but: 1) contains a lot of information that you don't need 2)explains only some of what you need and just lists the rest so you have to seek out another book and look that information up. I found Princeton Review to be much more helpful

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the topic areas that ETS expects you to have down. Its major strength is the diagnostic tests which effectively focus your review on your weak points. If, like me, you're prone to skip the less interesting stuff, the test results broken down by topic area provide excellent motivation to pay a little more attention! However, I would not recommend this as a sole source for GRE studying. You'll need a decent intro psych textbook (obviously) and some official test questions. The questions in this book's tests are not in ETS format. However, I found GRE Psychology a useful adjunct to my GRE preparation.

You will need a good psych intro book for reference, but this guide outlines all the major areas covered by the GRE. It had great review material, helped me to know which names I'd need to know for the exam, and was a very valuable study aid overall. I got a 760 on the subject test (98 percentile) which I owe in large part to Barrons, and now I'm going to a top 20 program in clinical psychology.

An excellent and succinct insight into the requirements, conflicts, and leadership needs of university chairs and deans. In fact, this should be required reading for ALL in such positions. The paradigm shift from faculty to admnistration and the bi-directional demands are clearly addressed, illustrated, and suggestions provided. Short scenarios put you in the "hot seat" and stimulates one to consider the dilemmas that might occur. This volume provides an ample foundation to become a successful leader among leaders. This is by far the worst book I have used to prepare for the MCAT. I have found that many of the answers in the practice tests are wrong, there are many typos, and the verbal reasoning passages sound like they were written by high school students. Also, the biological sciences section of the MCAT is supposed to be 50% biology and 50% organic chemistry, but the biological sciences practice tests in this book contain no organic chemistry questions whatsoever.

Not worth it

This book is too simplistic. The areas that Peterson's is reviewing should be common sense to anyone planning on taking the MCAT. The only reason to purchase this book is to use its practice tests. They are not AAMC tests by any means. However, practice tests are important in quantity even if they lack the quality.

I'm not surprised to see Martinson make some of the same mistakes in this book as are made in his GMAT CAT prep books from ARCO. Limited content and out of date
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-26
As a business school professor, I am constantly surprised at the number of unhelpful books about getting into B-school. I often read reviews crediting the writer's acceptance at a big-name school to a book. Really, it is your own intelligence, abilities, and persistence that have the strongest impact on getting you in; what's in even the best book is mostly fine-tuning.

This is not one of the best books, however. This book will add nothing meaningful to the skills you already have. There is very little in this book that you the applicant do not know instinctively. The advice on how to beef up your resume, for example, is pretty standard stuff that you will find in any "get a job" book. There is no school-specific content (i.e., what does Kellogg look for, vs. Wharton, vs. Chicago, etc.) to help you tailor your application to the particular hot-buttons of the school.

Furthermore, although copyright date on this book is 2000, it is based on an earlier edition and its age shows. So it's really out of date. For example, virtually no mention is made of the on-line application process.

There is more information about the application process--in Montauk's book "How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs." Even better, application advice ALONG WITH information about specific schools--is plentiful in the Business Week "Guide to the Best Business Schools" book (make sure you get the most recent (7th) edition of that one).

Good luck!

Not a good source.

Vaguely written, without focus, this book is of no use to any b-school applicant who has any common sense and has bothered to familiarize him/herself with the application process. For example, the author states "a weak personal statement is almost sure to compromise an applicant's chance for success." Is this not obvious to any reasonable adult? This book may be useful to someone who has no idea what is entailed in applying to business school, but a quick look at several b-school applications will tell you everything this book has to say. I recommend you spend your time and money on another source. I found "Marketing Yourself to the Top Business Schools," by Phil and Carol Carpenter much more insightful and helpful.

Well, I've found that the math review in this book is so helpful, but it lacks concentration on probability questions. It was good on giving hints in verbal and analytical sections. It contains 3 different full exams, but you will see more difficult quantitative questions in the real exam. Regarding the CD, it was the most helpful feature, it also contains another 3 different full exams just like the real ones. You can practice to answer questions in a timely manner, which is the most effective way to practice. I would recommend also the GRE PowerPrep from ETS, I've only seen its CD, and it was perfect. The big differences between the GRE PowerPrep and this book is that:

1) the powerprep shows real different reponses to the analytical writing, with different scores.

2) you can find more practice questions in the powerprep CD + 2 full exams.

There are too many sources of GRE prep-material to settle for something so poorly edited. If you are looking for clear and helpful preparation, this is not the material to get.

This book has a paper diagnostic test and three paper practice tests. Each one of these contains at least one conspicuous error; three tests contain three mistakes or more. And these are only the ones I caught.

For example, the diagnostic test has an antonym problem whose root word is "salubrious." This word means 'promoting health.' "Deleterious" and "acrid" are among the answer choices. The former means 'harmful to health,' while the latter means 'acidic' or 'bitter.' The answer key is evidently wrong in giving "acrid" as the answer.

Numerous answers and explanations for the practice tests are erroneous or misleading. On more than one occasion is the answer key contradicted by the answer explanation right next to it. For example, a quantitative comparison problem concludes with "A is greater" and shows D as the answer (cf. test 1 #9, test 2 #16, test 3 #14).

One answer explanation addresses an equation distinct from the actual problem (cf. test 1 #15); another offers an answer that has nothing to do with the original problem (cf. test 3 #4); several quantitative analysis explanations clearly mismeasure their own graphs (cf. test 1 #23, test 2 #11 and #12); one problem offers contradictory directions, giving both "The ratio of a to b is three forths" and "a = b" for the same geometric diagram (cf. test 2 #23); and one geometric diagram is not consistent with the provided explanation (cf. test 3 #15).

One answer explanation contradicts the book's own basic math introduction. On page 50 the book correctly states that an odd number multplied by an odd number results in an odd number. But the explanation for test 3 #26 states that "an odd times an odd is even." This single explanation then not only goes on to contradict the math introduction again, but bungles the original problem in the process.

The first computerized GRE also contains a mistake. (I only took one before I became too disgusted to complete the remaining two.) A quantitative comparison problem required that we solve for the variable x. The equation was as follows:

2/x + 1/5 = x/3

However, the answer explanation they give is for this equation:

2/x + 1/5 = 1/3x

And even though they correctly show x being equal to -25/3 they still manage to botch the steps to reach it. They have (6-1)/3x = -1/5 leading to 5x/3x = -1/5, which is an obvious mistake. This next to last step should read 5/3x = -1/5.

Moreover, the "Take It to the Next Level" sections stay within the basics. And the quantitative section, even with this so-called next level, still doesn't cover everything plainly listed in the free ETS study guide, nor as well as many other math refreshers.

Overall, the book contains the same set of tips offered by most other GRE books. But this book manages to add to the stress of preparation by wasting your time with unnecessary confusion.

I don't usually take the time to write reviews, but I was very dissapointed in this book. Like the other reviewer, I found many mistakes- both simple editing mistakes and completly wrong answers on some of the practice questions. With so many mistakes that I noticed, I am afraid that I may have been learning wrong information in areas that I was less familiar with and would not be able to catch the mistake.
I have not used other books to be able to compare, but I would imagine that anything else would have to be better.

Twenty-five years ago I installed two geothermal heat pumps in our house being constructed. The builder and plumber would not touch the project.
They considered it 'Black Magic'. They asked, "How do you burn water?"

We have 3.5 Pennsylvania acres. Rented a backhoe and dug a 2 ft wide
thousand foot trench and installed 2,000 ft of 2" polybutyl pipe down seven feet. Outbound pipe on one side of the trench and inbound on the other.

Had a problem on very windy frigid days. Had to use small space heaters as additional heat sources until I thought of the idea of installing a second water heater and running it on the off peak power to heat the recycled water in the closed loop heat pump system. No more use for the electic heaters. The 2,800 sq ft house stays nice and toasty. Have heat to spare. Very energy efficient and have the lowest cost utility and
heating bills in the neighborhood.

As gas, oil and elec prices go up, our utility bills average $400/month. we run our airconditioners from April to Oct and the heater Oct through March. Works great. Get one.

The BuyerĂ½s Guide to Business Schools

Review Date: 2000-12-07
This annually updated guide to business schools sets out to be a comprehensive resource by profiling 372 business programmes in the USA as well as in Canada, Europe, China and several other countries, all accredited by the International Association for Management Education. It also features several chapters of advice on choosing, gaining admission to, succeeding at, and financing a business school education.

Each business school profile includes institutional and admissions information, tuition and financial aid facts, descriptions of degrees offered, computer and research facilities, and employment information.

There are several interviews with admissions officers at several business schools who share their first-hand insights on what they are looking for. The eight most commonly asked essay questions (and what's behind them) are discussed as are 12 essays by applicants who had successfully gained admission to Harvard, Stanford, Dartmouth and other business schools.

Especially useful for aspiring MBA candidates are the tips on the Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) in which the author shows you how to score well on it. She offers dos and don'ts for interviews, and tips for getting the best possible recommendations from your referees.

To get you on the inside track of MBA jargon, the author explains 50 terms in a glossary of business school lingo.

Since 1985, Nedda Gilbert has counselled thousands of people on admission to MBA programs, and conducted GMAT courses for employees at Fortune 500 companies. She is a business career development consultant based in New Jersey with degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University.

Too much paper for too little relevant or unique information
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-21
If you are still considering an MBA education, or still at the beginning of the application process, this book will be very useful to you. It gives you an overall picture of the admission process, helps you calculate return on investment (if you are not sure you can do it yourself), lists things to consider when choosing the right business school, gives you hints on what you should and should not write in your essays, etc.

But if you are interested in learning more about the schools, this is not the book you are looking for. The 372 school profiles (which take up 78% of the book's pages) are nothing but a mere collection of the same old statistic data, such as average GMAT, % of minorities and average age (and some as irrelevant as % of female faculty). Most of the data is even outdated, as TOEFL's statistics still using the paper-based scale -- a disappointment if you were looking for the most recent book on b-schools. Even the most sought after MBAs are listed under the same framework.

In the profiles, each school is listed on a separate page, half of which is usually blank. Some 10% of them, randomly, have placed a two-page ad beside their profile, with catalog-like promotion text. If you want an insight into the specifics of the most reputable MBAs, a better option is the Business Week Guide To The Best Business Schools (you'd better wait for its 7th edition, though).

I must have been moving too fast to take much notice of the errors the other reviewers mentioned. I found Arco's GMAT prep book and CD to be a very useful review and preparation for the logic and math on the GMAT.
Not having time for a formal prep course I bought this book, scheduled my GMAT with the testing center, and worked quickly through the book. Having the test scheduled and my money paid was a good way to get myself moving. The book seemed clear and straightforward. There is a lot of review of the questions given in the practice tests. It helped me start to think like the test writers and look for the subtleties in the questions. It did not give me a new brain, and I was not surprised to see my final scores reflect how I have done on other standardized tests.
Get the book, take the test, get back to school. You will be glad you did.

How can this test prep help you learn when there are so many errors? It was a waste of time! I'm shocked at the lack of quality control for this product. It would take too long to explain all the errors I found in just one small section of one test but the grammatical errors were GLARING. I erased it from my computer immediately after taking just that one section because I couldn't trust that any other material would be accurate. Try checking your local library to sample a lot of different test preps if you can. Shame ARCO!

It contains many mistakes and not much explanation

I am a foreign student preparing for the GMAT. The answers in this book are not all accurate and that creates a lot of confusion because you will not understand what you did wrong. Also the explanations are not what I would like to get me prepared for the GMAT. I am going to buy the Kaplan and ETS books to study. There is a saying in my country that says

In the verbal section of this book, the author frequently writes about the South being treated biasedly by the "liberal" historians and the liberals are bad for the country. If you are looking for right-wing conservative propaganda, consider the free trolls online before wasting your money on this.

I thought I could focus on studying the GRE. But the book is more about political deceits and distractions, and definitely doesn't help.

I love this book! It's big enough to add notes on each page. I am using it as a resource in preparation for taking the Graduate Record Exam. I love the examples it gives for each objective. It has removed the fear I have about taking the GRE exam. I haven't tried to use the CD, yet, because I am a "hands-on-book" person.

CD does not work well. Many mistakes
