Where's the information?Review Date: 2000-09-07
This book is fantastic!Review Date: 2001-05-22
There is no reason in the world for a grant guide to invest 5,000 or so pages itemizing grants available at individual institutions - the most up-to-date and thorough sources for this kind of information will always be the institutions themselves. A quick scan of any grad school guide will indicate which institutions are most generous with funding for a given field. From there, you just contact your top five choices. Personally, I would never spend $100 on a tome that simply duplicates information available elsewhere.
I am equally baffled by the reviewer that complains about the general nature of the entries. If you're looking for degree-specific funding, there are web sites for profesisonal organizations that can help you.
I found this book to do exactly what it should. It provides detailed information about grants that you are unlikely to come across from other sources. After you contact instiutional grant offices and research funding for your specific degree, this book provides a wealth of information about those grants that are more hidden away in the woodwork.
For the 2001-2002 academic year, and as a doctoral student in an obscure humanities field, I have been awarded $85,000 intended to support myself and my spouse during the final phases of dissertation completion. These funds are the product of the information provided by this book, which I can't recommend highly enough.
It sounds as though the other reviewers are disappointed that one volume has not done all their work for them. For this, I would not blame Laurie Blum, but rather, the naivete of these readers.
Many inaccuracies about eligibility for awards frustrating!Review Date: 2002-08-16
The Truman Scholarship are open only to college juniors, not "undergraduate and graduate students."
I have only looked into two scholarships offered in this book, and already have found two errors. This Ph.D. candidate wasted his money on this book.

Martinson's B-school admission strategies problematicReview Date: 2000-04-17
It is a very practical bookReview Date: 1998-11-07
Limited content and out of dateReview Date: 2002-06-26
This is not one of the best books, however. This book will add nothing meaningful to the skills you already have. There is very little in this book that you the applicant do not know instinctively. The advice on how to beef up your resume, for example, is pretty standard stuff that you will find in any "get a job" book. There is no school-specific content (i.e., what does Kellogg look for, vs. Wharton, vs. Chicago, etc.) to help you tailor your application to the particular hot-buttons of the school.
Furthermore, although copyright date on this book is 2000, it is based on an earlier edition and its age shows. So it's really out of date. For example, virtually no mention is made of the on-line application process.
There is more information about the application process--in Montauk's book "How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs." Even better, application advice ALONG WITH information about specific schools--is plentiful in the Business Week "Guide to the Best Business Schools" book (make sure you get the most recent (7th) edition of that one).
Good luck!

2) you can find more practice questions in the powerprep CD + 2 full exams.

This book has a paper diagnostic test and three paper practice tests. Each one of these contains at least one conspicuous error; three tests contain three mistakes or more. And these are only the ones I caught.
For example, the diagnostic test has an antonym problem whose root word is "salubrious." This word means 'promoting health.' "Deleterious" and "acrid" are among the answer choices. The former means 'harmful to health,' while the latter means 'acidic' or 'bitter.' The answer key is evidently wrong in giving "acrid" as the answer.
Numerous answers and explanations for the practice tests are erroneous or misleading. On more than one occasion is the answer key contradicted by the answer explanation right next to it. For example, a quantitative comparison problem concludes with "A is greater" and shows D as the answer (cf. test 1 #9, test 2 #16, test 3 #14).
One answer explanation addresses an equation distinct from the actual problem (cf. test 1 #15); another offers an answer that has nothing to do with the original problem (cf. test 3 #4); several quantitative analysis explanations clearly mismeasure their own graphs (cf. test 1 #23, test 2 #11 and #12); one problem offers contradictory directions, giving both "The ratio of a to b is three forths" and "a = b" for the same geometric diagram (cf. test 2 #23); and one geometric diagram is not consistent with the provided explanation (cf. test 3 #15).
One answer explanation contradicts the book's own basic math introduction. On page 50 the book correctly states that an odd number multplied by an odd number results in an odd number. But the explanation for test 3 #26 states that "an odd times an odd is even." This single explanation then not only goes on to contradict the math introduction again, but bungles the original problem in the process.
The first computerized GRE also contains a mistake. (I only took one before I became too disgusted to complete the remaining two.) A quantitative comparison problem required that we solve for the variable x. The equation was as follows:
2/x + 1/5 = x/3
However, the answer explanation they give is for this equation:
2/x + 1/5 = 1/3x
And even though they correctly show x being equal to -25/3 they still manage to botch the steps to reach it. They have (6-1)/3x = -1/5 leading to 5x/3x = -1/5, which is an obvious mistake. This next to last step should read 5/3x = -1/5.
Moreover, the "Take It to the Next Level" sections stay within the basics. And the quantitative section, even with this so-called next level, still doesn't cover everything plainly listed in the free ETS study guide, nor as well as many other math refreshers.
Overall, the book contains the same set of tips offered by most other GRE books. But this book manages to add to the stress of preparation by wasting your time with unnecessary confusion.

They considered it 'Black Magic'. They asked, "How do you burn water?"
We have 3.5 Pennsylvania acres. Rented a backhoe and dug a 2 ft wide
thousand foot trench and installed 2,000 ft of 2" polybutyl pipe down seven feet. Outbound pipe on one side of the trench and inbound on the other.
Had a problem on very windy frigid days. Had to use small space heaters as additional heat sources until I thought of the idea of installing a second water heater and running it on the off peak power to heat the recycled water in the closed loop heat pump system. No more use for the electic heaters. The 2,800 sq ft house stays nice and toasty. Have heat to spare. Very energy efficient and have the lowest cost utility and
heating bills in the neighborhood.
As gas, oil and elec prices go up, our utility bills average $400/month. we run our airconditioners from April to Oct and the heater Oct through March. Works great. Get one.

The BuyerĂ½s Guide to Business SchoolsReview Date: 2000-12-07
Each business school profile includes institutional and admissions information, tuition and financial aid facts, descriptions of degrees offered, computer and research facilities, and employment information.
There are several interviews with admissions officers at several business schools who share their first-hand insights on what they are looking for. The eight most commonly asked essay questions (and what's behind them) are discussed as are 12 essays by applicants who had successfully gained admission to Harvard, Stanford, Dartmouth and other business schools.
Especially useful for aspiring MBA candidates are the tips on the Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) in which the author shows you how to score well on it. She offers dos and don'ts for interviews, and tips for getting the best possible recommendations from your referees.
To get you on the inside track of MBA jargon, the author explains 50 terms in a glossary of business school lingo.
Since 1985, Nedda Gilbert has counselled thousands of people on admission to MBA programs, and conducted GMAT courses for employees at Fortune 500 companies. She is a business career development consultant based in New Jersey with degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University.

Too much paper for too little relevant or unique informationReview Date: 2001-02-21
But if you are interested in learning more about the schools, this is not the book you are looking for. The 372 school profiles (which take up 78% of the book's pages) are nothing but a mere collection of the same old statistic data, such as average GMAT, % of minorities and average age (and some as irrelevant as % of female faculty). Most of the data is even outdated, as TOEFL's statistics still using the paper-based scale -- a disappointment if you were looking for the most recent book on b-schools. Even the most sought after MBAs are listed under the same framework.
In the profiles, each school is listed on a separate page, half of which is usually blank. Some 10% of them, randomly, have placed a two-page ad beside their profile, with catalog-like promotion text. If you want an insight into the specifics of the most reputable MBAs, a better option is the Business Week Guide To The Best Business Schools (you'd better wait for its 7th edition, though).

Fine for meReview Date: 2007-07-31
Not having time for a formal prep course I bought this book, scheduled my GMAT with the testing center, and worked quickly through the book. Having the test scheduled and my money paid was a good way to get myself moving. The book seemed clear and straightforward. There is a lot of review of the questions given in the practice tests. It helped me start to think like the test writers and look for the subtleties in the questions. It did not give me a new brain, and I was not surprised to see my final scores reflect how I have done on other standardized tests.
Get the book, take the test, get back to school. You will be glad you did.
