Author might have a name, wrote a book, but did not literally mean that he is an expert... From the citation and stories, too little known facts of life, too shallow and naive for his concepts, let alone providing advices or go to the bottom of the problems to do good for humanity. I found 1 in 1 million therapists to be categorized as qualified and caring to their profession. What a shame that we have a lots of quacks with big bugs today and few of qualified, worthy, and humanistic to their professional vows.
Better spending money on watching the movie good will hunting, and donating money to the charity - it may save your own soul and others!

Clear, up-to-date information, covers topics that parents need

A great book that covers relationships with your child along with child development basics. Clearly written and based on years of experience and data.

It covers a great range of topics, including ones often left out of general parenting books, like issues of physical contact among preschoolers (what's appropriate, what's not) or friendships.

They have great suggested reading lists at the end of each chapter for parents who want to delve deeper into any one topic. It's easy to choose the chapters you are most interested in and read those first.

It's become one of the books I recommend to people, which is rare for me. I have read a lot of child development and parenting books and this is one of the best.

A New Favorite

This book has easily become one of my absolute favorite parenting books. That is saying a lot, as child development is my passion, and I have read nearly everything! This is much more than just a parenting book. It is a valuable resource for parents to learn more about their children's development, and how to grow together as families.

The authors do not water down the content, as many other "fluff" parenting books do. It is packed with valuable information and suggestions about how to parent your particular child. I appreciate how the book made me evaluate my parenting style and expectations versus my children's personalities. My son, in particular, has a personality that sometimes makes me cringe, because it is so different from my own at times. This book really makes you think!

The format is not exactly easy to just scan, pick, and choose. It is straight forward, with many little narratives and examples of various family issues and ways they can be handled. Many of the more complex issues are covered, too, such as "spirited" children, overly anxious kids, family conflicts, parent/child personality clashes, etc.

If you are seeking to improve communication with your children and become a more effective parent, I highly recommend this book!

Corkscrews, Cathedrals,and Time Travel

Review Date: 2007-06-15
"The first qualification for judging any piece of workmanship from a corkscrew to a cathedral is to know what it is-what it was intended to do and how it was meant to be used." C. S. Lewis (A Preface To "Paradise Lost," 1)

This book is a SWAT-type story set in a time-travel milieu. So expect a cross between Quantum Leap - The Complete First Season and 24 - Seasons 1-5, with a hero, a team, and a mission to accomplish. The time-travel aspect is icing on the cake.

Here are the book's strengths. First of all, it exists. That is, the author stuck with the task to the end, and that is quite an accomplishment for a novice. We all know people who fancy themselves writers, but when you press them, you learn it is more of a dream.

Secondly, the book has a proper structure. It follows the pacing and format of a TV show TV movie, so it is good on the dialogue and skeletal aspects of the story. What is missing is the descriptive meat that separates a screenplay from a novel. I know this because I have the same problem with my fiction.

This book's style could be improved. An "out loud" reading would catch come the grammatical errors, typos, and prolixity. As Strunk and White said: "Omit needless words. Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. This requires not that the writer make all his sentences short, or that he avoid all detail and treat his subjects only in outline, but that every word tell." (The Elements of Style, Fourth Edition, 23) ." A good editor with a sharp pencil could help.

Another help would be How to Write Science Fiction & Fantasy. This book reads like a novel adaptation of a TV series. Consequently it has all of a TV series advantages: ensemble cast, intriguing setting, and an open ended premise that allows for a multitude of directions. However, the technical aspects are holding the book's sequel back.

I thought the swearing was forced. It intended to make the book more adult, but it came off childish: "When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child" but "when I became a man, I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up." (C. S. Lewis). When using spicy language, remember that Tabasco sauce is not ketchup.

The last suggestion is theme. What is the book's Cosmic, Eternal Truth? Watch several episodes of the Twilight Zone: The Complete Definitive Collection or Star Trek The Original Series - The Complete Seasons 1-3, and then compare them to Rod Serling's Night Gallery - The Complete First Season and Star Trek Voyager - The Complete Seasons 1-7. Behind the plot, the series of evens, is a theme, or an idea, or a cause that motivates the heroes and villains. This story has action, but no idealism--aside from self defense and vague justice. If this could be focused, the next book will become sharper.

Let me conclude with an observation from Oswald Chambers:

"An artist is one who not only sees but is prepared to pay the price of acquiring the technical knowledge to express what he sees. An artistic person is one who has not enough art in him to make him work at the technique of art whereby he can express himself, he indulges in moods and tones and impressions; consequently there are more artistic people than there are artists." (The Complete Works of Oswald Chambers)

Time travel is an exciting topic for fiction. There are, of course, a couple of problems with it. One is that there are some paradoxes associated with time travel. The simplest is receiving, say, a book in the year 2007 that turns out to be a history of the next 20 years, written by you (of all people) in 2027. You might use such a book to make plenty of money, betting on horse races and trading commodities. After 20 years, there would be no need to go to the trouble of writing that book and sending it to yourself, would there? But if you did not write the book, then where did that information come from?

In addition, when you go back in time, just where are you? In the past? Well, that might be a problem if you go to a place or time that you had never been to before. How would you even describe such a journey? I think the English language is not adequate to say just what this sort of "time travel" really might be.

Given these paradoxes, some authors like to make rules that need to be obeyed, so that the "future" is not messed up. Such rules appear confusing and arbitrary, but since these are works of fiction, they sometimes are included.

In this book, Jose Alonso has a good idea for his story, namely sending people on "missions" to accomplish important tasks in the past. Given the hindsight we can have, it makes sense to undo some historical misadventures. The story and plot both seem reasonable to me.

Unfortunately, there are a couple of problems with the book. First, it really needs some proofreading for grammar. I might make one exception here: when there is a question of what tense to use, it might be fun to leave in some wrong tenses to indicate the time traveling. But the rest ought to be fixed.

The other problem is that the book reads poorly except during dialog. Explanations of what is happening are often awkward. It might be better to include even more dialog, so that the characters can tell each other what is going on. And rather than say that a shot was fired, or that people were celebrating, it might be better to show people do that, or show their reactions to it.

Awesome time traveling book!

I am always looking for some good time traveling books and this day either there are none or there are few that actually captivate me. But this one right here is outstanding. I mean it is pure action all the way I couldn't stop reading it! I would suggest it to any time traveling fan, heck any sci-fi fan might want to give this one a try.

I read this book in two sits and it was becuase I had something to do and I couldn't finish it on the first one! I really suggest this book to everyone out there! Every sci-fi fan like I said!

Just got this book- I thought it was a very nice overview of hematology and oncology. It was one of the few that I could find that had "just enough" detail without going overboard with minutiae. A great book for a student or resident on service.

Well Done

This is a subspecialty consult book on hem/onc that I just received. It seems to have all of the basics for the primary physician, med student, rotating resident and even the basics for the fellows. You never know it might even have some of the minutiae that some attendings might forget. I think it was created for the rotating resident or med student and for this it really serves its purpose. Easy and concise. Although I have not read it completely, it does seem a tad sparse in some sections such as dosing chemo (not that the med student/resident would dose chemo), but these protocols are constantly changing anyway...but an idea of dose range might have been a bit helpful some readers. Overall it is an excellent review of hem/onc.

Okay...Everybody these dayz be talkin' how the Washington Manual series is tha bobm. (I mean this book was already ranked at 910,000 on Amazon within like only 2 weeks of release) Well, sorry to alert you of this, but they ain't tha bobm. It's just that people were so gaga about there last one: The Washington Manual Gastroenterology Subspecialty Consult. I mean my sister just threw a "Gastroenterology Subspecialty Consult"-themed party last week and all her friends went basically BUHLISTIC over it.

Now, the Washington Manual stuff is aight, but it's no Health Institute-level stuff and it certainly is nothing when put in the ring together with the Terrence Bros. Series which, if nothing else, are mad powerful consults and the ones I would use most often in my practice.

And, can someone answer me this, why are hematology and oncology talked about in the SAME BOOK??? Oncology's cool, but, sorry again, fols, hematology is basically going the way of alchemy. That's right. I said it. Hematology is a useless science and only could MAYBE come in handy if anyone ever had a disorder of the blood or associated organs.

Also, it seemed like this book was totally not saying near enough about dosing chemo (I mean, not that any med student or resident would dose chemo, obviously), but, still, yo, these protocolz are constantly changing anyway.

I bought this book because I'm interested in mostly Master's programs and Graduate Study in Psychology's coverage of programs is too prolific, including every single program out there. I thought this book would be a good cross-reference of only Master's programs. I also hoped for a little bit of helpful information about applying to programs, or what to expect from a Master's psych program in general. None of this was available. The book includes a short glossary of terms and the rest of the book's pages are dedicated to the programs. However, much space is wasted (pages are 50% blank!) because the information given for each program is quite sparse. Most of the information given, while important, is only marginally useful, such as contact addresses, phone numbers, and emails, as well as application deadlines and website addresses. Most of this information is readily available for free online or from the school directly, and I wouldn't trust time-sensitive info from a book that is not updated annually. The book is also missing several programs. I was shocked to notice in Grad Study that Yale has a General Master's in psych when there is no such listing in this guide.

The only valuable stuff here is some additional admission statistics and a note of whether the program has an applied or research orientation. And even this information could be obtained elsewhere. As I said, I wanted to use it as an easy cross-reference to Master's programs without having to sift through PhD programs as well. But my advice is to continue sifting through programs in Grad Study from the APA. Use the Allyn & Bacon for backup or quick reference, but not for heavy-duty info.

My primary complaint about this book is that much of the information is out of date. For instance, schools' tuition costs are often significantly different than those directly stated on their websites. Some of the information about the culture is helpful, but could easily be discerned from reading information about schools online or perhaps in other books. A lot of the other information is intuitive or so cursory to be useless.

Better to look at information on the Business Week B-School website or other internet resources or just go to the bookstore and simply glance at the schools you're considering. Absolutely not worth owning.

For someone choosing their career path, or changing their career path, this book is terrific. All the basic information you would ever need about jobs is in this book and some of it is quite eye opening. For people not looking for a new job path, the book is still informing because it explains what people actually do on their jobs and the pros and cons of that. I've not been able to stop reading - it is just fascinating in a general sense about jobs, and very practically helpful in specific way for individual work path decisions.

Let me state for the record that I have NOT looked at every single job in this book. However, EVERY job that I have looked up (about 30 or so) has salary data from 2004! I was shocked. The 2007-2008 portion of the title is misleading. I was thinking that I would get more recent info. I bought this book for my 17 year old brother who is trying decide what career path to take. If I had bought the book for myself, I would have returned it. Most would benefit by doing a simple internet search for whatever job they are interested in. At first I gave the book 2 stars but then I decided on 3 - since that book is really big and probably has every job imaginable. But then I went back to 2 because I felt like some of the salary information (in addition to being outdated) was unrealistic.

I bought this book, the Kaplan 2004, the Offical GMAT Review, and the Princeton review book (ok, I went a little crazy on the book buying). The book itself was similar in content to the Kaplan and Princeton books, however, the CD was fairly lacking. If you were only going to buy one book, I'd recommend the official GMAT review book, then the Kaplan, then the Princeton, and then this book. This book was definitely worthwhile, but the limited CD made it my least favorite.

Eight CAT tests on the CD-ROM are good.

This book comes with a very useful CD-ROM, which has eight computer-adaptive, actual-test-like diagnostic tests. The questions on these tests are very applicable to the GMAT, but the scoring is a little harsh, i.e. expect your actual GMAT score to be just a little higher than those on these diagnostic tests. Hence, the book itself is not spectacular, but it is worth buying just for the CD-ROM.
