Ok guide for getting in and starting out, but there are better onesReview Date: 2007-05-20
The book will not, however, be very useful for students who are already midway through graduate school, especially those in Ph.D programs. More than half of the book is taken up with the time before graduate school (applying to and preparing for), and the discussions of being in graduate school only deal with coursework -- which, again, suggests that the intended audience is masters and professional students rather than Ph.D. students. The book's main weakness is that it contains no discussion of writing dissertations or theses, conducting research (which even masters programs tend to require), or preparing and professionalizing for academia.
Those who are just starting to think about graduate school might benefit from reading through this book, but there are better guides that cover more of the graduate experience (in addition to what this book discusses) and that are also more useful for those pursuing a Ph.D. or aiming for an academic career, particularly Getting What You Came For: The Smart Student's Guide to Earning an M.A. or a Ph.D., by Robert Peters.

A frank conversation with a Works MechanicReview Date: 1998-06-03
Don't expect a novel or autobiography. This book is neither. It's more like a stream of loosely connected anecdotes in more or less chronolocial order. But this is not a fault! It's better that Moylan's experiences be documented and published for all to enjoy than have them lost.
The chapters are broken up by the Works manager of the time - Marcus Chambers, Stuart Turner, Peter Browning, Basil Wales, Richard Seth-Smith, Bill Price and John Davenport. Within the chapters are the authors experiences on each rally under direction of the manager and are illustrated by photographs from his own collection and others - many never published before.
What this book does is shed considerable light on how the rallies were won and how the BMC Works cars made history. It's an essential companion to Marcus Chambers "Works Wonders - Rallying and Racing with BMC, Rootes and Chrysler" (Motor Racing Publications Ltd, 1995). Other books focus on the cars and drivers, like Peter Brownings "The Works Mini's" (1st edition, NLA)& "The Illustrated History of the Works Mini's in International Rallies and Races" (second edition, Foulis, 1996) and Trevor Lord's "Monte-Carlo - The Mini Legend Archive Album" (Brewin Books, 1994). But it's the behind the scenes people that ensure those cars were well prepared, well maintained and THERE at the finish. That work was done by expert mechanics like Brian Moylan.
If you have a passion for the history of motorsports, this book is for you. You'll learn where those 'Works modificaions' were born, how they performed in! service and what it was really like to be behind the scenes during the events which made Mini's famous. You'll also learn that none of these people were superheros. They were just blokes like you and me. They just happened to be at the right place at the right time.... a time which will never be repeated.

The book does have the best info we had at the time, and provides recommendations on how radiological casualties might be handled medically.
The Department of Defense makes this type of medical NBC defense information freely available to all, but its primary focus is on the protection of the servicemember in a combat environment. For further information and electronic copies, the Armed Forces Rabiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) can be accessed on the web.

At the writing of this review, the book is already over a decade old. Understandably, some of the designs look a bit dated. Yet others appear quite timeless. It is the innovation and unusual approach to Jewelry and design that makes this a wonderful reference book. The pieces are beautifully executed and well photographed. Innovative materials are used along side the traditional.
Chapter headings include such lofty titles as: Designing a Unique piece of jewelry, Designing Series-produced jewelry, Designing Utensils and Objects of Art, On Stone and forms, The quadrature of the Circle and the homo ludens, The Arabesques of Modernity, Thoughts on Form, "I think there is much of me contained in it...", Fundamentals of Artistic Design Drawing and painting, "What I like...",
The book includes many large, full color photos. Often a single page is devoted to one or two pieces. Written in both German and English, the text in each chapter is fairly limited, usually just a few paragraphs. Student/Designers and the University staff are also featured with a photo and brief text.
As the chapter heading indicate, the wording leans more towards the poetic and inspirational. This is understandable given the context of the publication as a documentation of advance student work. If you can see past some of the more dated designs and appreciate the quality of the craftsmanship and the creativity expressed in the objects, then this publication is a worthwhile addition.
