Why a Democratic Palestine must replace Israel
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-03
This is a set of fundamental documents that analyze the issue of Israel and Palestine from a socialist perspective. They show the basic nature of Israel as a settler-colonial state that is opposed to any advances for liberation, democracy, or social progress for the peoples of the Mid-East and War. They show the basically racist nature of Zionism, and how its permanent mission is oppression andexpansion against the Palestinian people. It also shows how dismantling the Zionist racist state and establishing a democratic, secular Palestine with equal rights for all is the only solution.

"Israel and the Arab Revolution" by Gus Horowitz is essential reading for the working class, oppressed peoples movements, and their supporters around the world. It consists of a debate among revolutionaries as to whether the demand for a democratic secular Palestine should be unconditionally supported. That is: a state where Arabs and Jews would live as equals, replacing the Zionist, racist and religiously based colonial-settler state of Israel, which is a state similar to the old apartheid South Africa, or the old Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe.

The debate occurred in 1971, just 4 years after Israel seized large chunks of land in the 1967 war against Arab countries, a year after Jordan's King Hussein had slaughtered thousands of Palestinians and two years before Israel's next war of aggression in 1973.

Along with the Palestinians' just struggle, this document takes up the struggles of the Arab countries against Zionism and imperialism. It includes the struggle of the Israeli working class and the working class of Arab countries as well. The revolutionary way forward is presented. The perspective laid out is crucial today.

...against the Palestinian people.
The documents in this pamphlet were originally a set of of working
notes for revolutionaries in the 1970s active in the anti-Vietnam War
movement, the Black liberation struggle, the aborning women's liberation
movement, early Chicano and Puerto Rican movements...For the
thousands of fighters who marched against Sharon's brutal assault , in D.C.
and S.F. ( spring 2002 ), and those who resist the Empire's new war on Iraq
( the Zionist government has already drawn up plans to expell two
million Palestinians from West Bank and Gaza during the 2nd Gulf
War ), they are no less useful whatever your age or
experience in struggle .Zionism and the Israeli state have always been at
the service of Empires ( first the British one and then the Yanki one ) ; until
1979 it was part of a twin set of gigantic military platforms for the Yanki
empire, along with Iran. Its alliance with the real 'axis of evil' in Washington
D.C. and the brutal repression used by Israel to try to humiliate the
Palestinians as a people is making Israel a death trap for the Jewish
people ; the historic program of the original fighters ( 'terrorists' unlike
Sharon ? ! ) for Palestinian liberation against Zionism AND anti-Semitism; all
these themes are explored. Most important is the program put forth by
revolutionary socialists in the Belly Of The Beast : there can be no peace
in the Middle East until there is a democratic secular Palestine from the
River Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea. For basic ( especially historic
blow by blow ) info if you need it, first buy Palestine And The Arabs
Struggle For Freedom, and Israel's War Aganst the Palestinians. For
evolution of Arafat and the PLO, read Opening Guns Of World War III ; all
the above also by Pathfinder Press. But buy this pamphlet TOO; with these
books and pamphlets you can go out and talk to the millions of workers,
farmers, students WHO ARE SEEING THE TRUE FACE OF ZIONISM
FOR THE FIRST TIME. Those are people we must help to be educated
and motivated to act on their horror at the massacre in Jenin, etc. With
patience and no patronizing.Just the facts.

This has been a very useful book

This book is wonderful for two reasons.

1: It sumarizes & clearly illustrates basic concepts for those unfamiliar with how landscaping & vegetation choices/arrangements effect water quality. I've resorted to showing more than one person sections of this book when I'd failed to explain how to, or why to, restore native vegetation in someone's yard. I imediatly saw a smile of comprehension.

2: Appendix A, is a useful reference even for people familiar with native plants. The "Restore Your Shore" CD, that I also own, is a waste of time. Use this book.

I've many books that focus on subtle floristic diferences on which traditional taxonomic names are based, yet say hardly a sentence about the ecological niche and life requirements of the plant. Some books catalog what county species have been sighted, yet fail to mention that a plant requires ponded water. I hope this book sets a new standard.

This appendix has basic information one needs to find a good home for a purchased plant.
Flower color, bloom season, typical height, appropriate spacing
moisture habitat(deep water, shallow water, wet soil, upland mesid, upland dry), and light requrementsFull sun (8+ hours), Partial Shade (4+ hours), and Shade (no direct sun).
What animals use it...

Besides typo-errors of the sort Google corrects if you search for "Hevchera richardsonii", I've yet to find a substantive errors in this reference. Plant spacing and heights are by nature variable.

Invaluable Resource For Lakeshore Property Owners

As a lakeshore property owner in northern Minnesota I would like this book to be read by all lakeshore property owners. Lakeshore environments are in need of our best conservation efforts.

Learning about the role of "aquatic weeds," dead trees, "brush," and live trees enables us to improve lake water quality and our relationship with wildlife. The information, presented by authors with expertise, will be useful in the planning of your lakeshore while learning about and understanding the wonderful diversity of lakeshore environments.

The layout's inviting, full of graphics and easy to read. The nine chapters deal with lakeshore landscaping and problems, site preparation and plant installation, shoreline stabilization and maintenance, good stewardship and more.

There are also thirteen useful appendices that include the state rules of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, while other appendices help you identify and locate native plants and invasive non-native plants.

This is the perfect gift for every lakeshore property owner! Full of information and fun to read!

Please read this if you own lakeshore!

We are upsetting nature and killing our lakes with lawns to the waters edge and removing all the natural vegetation. Read this book before you start landscaping. You can make it a win-win situation with you and nature.

A very well organized and highly useful publication for audit executives responsible for administrtion of internal audit departments. It is especially beneficial and relevant to organziations with newly established internal audit functions. As the chief auditor of a newly formed group at a major footwear and apparel company, I have relied on this book almost daily to provide knowledge, guidance and direction. It has, and continues to be, invaluable in the development and growth of my organization's internal audit department and has facilitated my focusing on doing things right the "first time." A truly value-added publication!!

This publication is perhaps the most useful, well organized and valuable resource I have ever come across in the area of Internal Audit Department Administration. As the Director of Internal Audit of a newly formed Audit group at a major footwear and apparel company, not a day passes where I do not refer to this book for knowledge and guidance. It has provided me invaluable insight into administering a department and on focusing on doing things right "the first time." It is a must have resource for any department, new or old, that wants to build itself into a world-class function. I recommend this to every Internal Audit organization.

Long known as a world-class aviation historian, former Milwaukee firefighter Wayne Mutza makes a second journey into the history of the profession and Department he loves. The results are again top notch. Where many authors of image-based histories fail to properly marry photos and captions, Mutza succeeds at making each element support the other to simultaneously deliver both social and technical history at its best. Whether for education, entertainment, or example, this is the book to take in hand and enjoy.

A treasury of visual history, steeped in pride, gratitude, and respect

Review Date: 2005-08-05
The newest addition to Arcadia's outstanding "Images of America" series, Milwaukee Fire Department by Wayne Mutza (who served for almost twenty years with the Milwaukee Fire Department before the hazards of firefighting ended his career) tells the story of the Milwaukee Fire Department from its origins as a volunteer group in 1837 down to the present day. Milwaukee Fire Department is not a strictly text history, but rather a photographic one, consisting almost entirely of black-and-white photographs from the past century and a half, each photograph sporting a brief caption detailing its origin. A treasury of visual history, steeped in pride, gratitude, and respect for the selfless and often heroic labor of Milwaukee's protectors against the ravages of fire.

I first read "Quest for the Best" when it was published in 1979. I was in college then, and Mr. Marcus' view of retailing was so informative, to say nothing of interesting. I learned more from reading that book than I did from some of my college courses. If you're thinking of a career in retailing, or just wanting a glimpse into the high-end retail world, read this book, as well as "Minding the Store," which is also by Mr. Marcus.

Rescue at Engine 32 is one of the most inspiring books I have read in years. Jessica Locke's search to find a way to help Engine 32 firefighters in New York after 9/11 brings about many emotions, ups and downs. My husband and dad are retired Captains from the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD), my brothers are both Captains of the NOFD, and several cousins as well. I thought that this impacted my emotions brought about when reading it but now that several friends with no connection to any firefighters have read the book, I know different. All were truly inspired and were also very emotional when discussing Rescue at Engine 32. Jessica Locke is truly an amazing woman. I thank her for sharing her life and being such an inspiration. It is hard to believe that we can do just about anything we set our minds to if we just give it a shot. She proved this to be true. I believe she still has more to come. Again, thanks.

Must read for those interested in true stories of 9/11...

This is the story of Jessica Locke's journey to New York City's Ground Zero, where she felt drawn to following the Terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. She responded the only way she knew how to - as a person who had suffered a great deal of pain in her own life. She could sense the collective pain of the victims that called from the smoky pile at Ground Zero. She knew about pain and suffering from her own past. True, there was little she could do for those murdered except to pay her respects. But there were "other" victims. There were the rescue and recovery workers who had been through a terrible tragedy, yet they would not acknowledge it. They could not. They were in "rescue" mode. Day in and day out. They were in denial. Jessica knew how this event would eventually affect these workers if they were left untreated.

Jessica would rely on her abilities as a practitioner of the Alexander Technique to try to help those that would accept her help. It would be difficult to "help" such strong and capable figures. But she approached them with a great grace, and surprisingly, she would be welcomed into a New York City firehouse during one of the most defining moments in the history of firefighting.

This is a story of unprecedented access given to a special woman who was able to gain the trust of a firehouse recovering from the loss of 343 colleagues, four of who were members of their own firehouse. From shopping with the Company for meals, to eating with them; from going on "runs", to sitting in the kitchen observing the interaction of firehouse culture, Jessica has immortalized what it was like to be inside an FDNY firehouse following the events of 9/11. Jessica has become a part of that big family that is known as "The New York City Fire Department".

Read the book. Enjoy it. Marvel at this "true" story of joys that made her feel like a little girl again, and moments of sorrow that reminded her of what brought her to New York City in the first place.

And how do I know that this is a "true" story? Well, I used to work in the very firehouse in which this story takes place....

I live in New York and needless to say, I along with my family were profoundly effected by the tragic events of Sept. 11th.

I have a one year-old daughter at home, and started reading this book in the morning over breakfast. Throughout the day I found myself reading more and more and by bedtime the book was finished.

I found this book to be an easy page-turner. The author gracefully goes back and forth between her childhood and the present. As I was reading along, I would find myself in tears one moment and laughing out loud the next. Through her words, I felt the admiration she had and still has for the members of Engine 32. She also has great courage to let us (the reader) into her own personal and intimate past.

This book is so beautifully written that I (as a reader) know for a fact that it came straight from the heart!

As a safety officer myself, I found this book truly captivating. I couldn't put it down. If you ever had a difficult time starting a safety program, I recommend you read "Risk Management in the Fire Service". This book is a recipe for an effective safety/risk management program. Mr. Wilder's five-step risk management process is so simple, I will use it for all future safety programs. I can't think of any incident too complex for this process. I used to think budget determined how effective a safety program could be, but this book gives step-by-step advice on things you can do within any budget. It's nice to know there's a reference and an authority I can turn to when I need help. Thank you Mr. Wilder.

While the concept of risk management is new to fire and EMS services, it is obviously not new to the author. His fire science background combined with his risk management background make him the logical choice to train the industry. Having sat in on lectures given by the author, I purchased the book with the hopes that it would be as easy to follow as are his classes. I was not disappointed. This book is written in a such a way that it takes a complex topic and makes it easy to follow and understand. As a fire department captain and EMT, I have already taken some of the ideas gained from this book and brought them into our department. I strongly recommend this book for fire department administrators, training officers, safety officers, and anyone interested in learning the basics of risk management.

Clearly, Mr. Wilder is the authority in this field !

Having spent nearly 28 years in the risk management business it is refreshing to find a book that deals with timely issues in a clear, concise manner. The exposures unique to fire fighters/medics are unique and Mr. Wilder has unique approaches to today's risks. This book is a must read for any fire department in the United States and City Managers, Fire Chiefs, firemen and women would be remiss if it wasn't mandatory reading. One thing for sure. . . as soon as we are finished posting this review an invitation will be extended to Mr. Wilder to come address our departments and key personnel. I would encourage anyone in the business, who has not read this masterful work, to pick it up. I am certain based upon years of defense related consulting work that this book will become a standard in the industry and will be guide lines for conduct observed by both the plaintfiff and defense bars across the country. An "Excellent" job Mr. Wilder. Thank you . Mike Vines System Risk Manager

I am a retired law enforcement officer and really enjoyed reading some of real facts about the Old West. Many of the stories we read and see on TV have been embellished to make it seem more interesting, but the truth is often more fascinating that the fictional accounts. And Sven dug out the truth through research and interviews and provides us some wonderful, great stories about Los Angeles during the times of the Gold Rush, Civil War, and the beginning of the LA Sheriff's Department. He brings to life the desperadoes and the racial problems, offset by strong government leaders and the heroic deeds of the early lawmen. An excellent chronicle of the wild and wooly days out West.

In this monumental work, Sri Aurobindo explains in depth how the different aspects of the ancient practice of yoga combine to enhance and promote our spiritual evolution. Speaking from a knowledge that is clearly the product of experience, Aurobindo explores and explains every facet of our human journey as we move toward conscious unification with our Source. One can get the most from this definitive work by moving through it slowly, giving oneself the time needed to understand and absorb its contents, for its scope is both broad and deep, thus making it a perennial reference for the serious seeker.

Sri Aurobindo provides an overview of the field of yoga. This is not a series of physical exercises, but the practices that allow an individual to understand the complex inner psychology and begin to move it toward union with the Divine. After a brief overview, Sri Aurobindo goes into great depth on the paths of knowledge, love and works, and concludes with his own unique contribution to the yoga of self perfection, where he reveals the evolutionary purpose of our human existence and puts the entire struggle we face into context.

A Modern Classic on Yoga
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-05
Of the many books available on Yoga in book stores today, very few deal with the subject in any real depth. Most cater to the popular image of Yoga as yoga postures for physical well-being. Few challenge the reader to a deeper vision of Yoga or of their own inner nature. The Synthesis of Yoga stands apart from the available literature on Yoga, expressing the soul of Yoga to the deepest intelligence within us.
In fact, there are few works of such magnitude and comprehensiveness about Yoga ever written, and probably nothing comparable in the English language. Yet more importantly, this profound compendium on Yoga was not written from an academic or scholarly perspective, or from the view of those who work primarily with the physical yoga. It is a study of Yoga written by one of the greatest yogis of modern India, Sri Aurobindo, who has a reputation of spiritual greatness in India that exceeds Mahatma Gandhi, Tagore and other more well known figures in the West. There is probably no work of such scope and grandeur on Yoga available, and none by an author who was speaking from his own direct experience and realization.
The Synthesis of Yoga deals with Yoga as a means of Self-realization, God-realization and the transformation of humanity. It addresses all the classical yogic paths of knowledge, devotion, works and meditation, including Raja Yoga in all of its aspects. In this book, the term "Integral Yoga," first arises, combining all aspects of Yoga into a comprehensive system for the full development of all of our potentials on all levels of our being. The book shows the relevance of Yoga to all that we are, do, or are meant to become.
As a student, teacher and writer on Yoga and related teachings for more than thirty years, I cannot emphasize enough the importance at looking at Yoga the deeper and integral manner that is so eloquently expressed in the Synthesis of Yoga. It is recommended reading to all those who want to approach deeper or inner aspects of Yoga. The book will transform your idea of Yoga and open many new dimensions of practice and realization for you that you had not previously considered possible. I don't think anyone can seriously read the book and not come away without a sense of the vastness of real Yoga practice. The book will provide you with a deep understanding of the essence of Yoga, far beyond the common stereotypes of yoga as a physical or psychological practice for personal enhancement. The Synthesis of Yoga contains the keys for restoring Yoga as a deep spiritual practice with both an ancient and a futuristic vision.
In these days in which Yoga has largely been reduced to an exercise or fitness system, it is important to remember the spiritual orientation and purpose that classical Yoga was all about. The Synthesis of Yoga does this and much more, not from the ancient past or a poorly translated foreign language, but from a master teacher of the modern world, an eloquent poet and profound philosopher.
