Finally! A User-Friendly Gardening Book

This beautifully illustrated book steers clear from all the "professional jargon" and actually allows you to get outside and garden!

In a nicely uncluttered way, it shows you through the use of simple illustrated tables WHEN to plant each type of vegetable and WHERE. It makes gardening fun again.

Hooray! No longer does one have to spend days reading about soils, biological make-up, beneficial bugs and the other things that make vegetable gardening seem like some mysterious technological feat.

A Big Help for Florida Gardens!

As a new gardener, I was happy to read this easy to follow guide. It answers the basic questions, and gives great timelines to follow. It has full color pictures, that really help you to visualize what they are talking about in the text. It is not a fancy garden book, with all the scientific "mumbo jumbo". Just easy directions to follow for success. So far my garden looks great and I have had no problems thanks to this book.

Being new to gardening it has been a chore finding books I can understand about gardening. Many make promises but don't deliver information in a senible manner and I end up more frustrated than satisfied. This one delivers. The thing I love about this book is its simple easily understandable format. The book is loaded with color photographs that help me distinguish the different kinds of problems plants suffer from, making it a simple process in learning how to care for my plants and exactly what may be the problem.

I like the way he layed out the charts in the back of the book. One section for cold crops and one section for winter crops. He even has a section for herbs! It takes the work out of thumbing through page after page, book after book, of when, what and where I can grow things. Thanks, Mr. Stephens, for taking the mystery out of vegetable gardening and making my life a little easier and a lot simplier.

Poor communicator/Little information

I was not impressed with this book, especially as a beginner gardener. It is pretty poorly written. I found myself having to look up many terms as they aren't defined in the book. Little context or explanation is given to seemingly major aspects of gardening. For instance, when talking about fertilizing in containers, the author says, "the nutrient solution must be added and drained in the container once or twice a day." What nutrient solution? For what plants? What ratios? It never says.

I hoped the book would give special attention to vegetables grown in Florida such as peppers. The only special attention peppers get are 4 paragraphs in the back of the book that talk about how many peppers will feed a family; that they should be transplanted "with care"; and that they are still edible after turning red (ya thanks!) Note that earlier in the book on pg 43, there is a chart about how easily veggies transplant. Peppers are in the "easily survive transplanting" category as opposed to "require care." Since the back of the book says to transplant the peppers "with care," I see this as a basic contradiction in the book.

I'm not really sure this book will help anyone, novice or expert. It's not detailed enough to help an expert and it's not clear enough to help a beginner. With the author's poor grammar and lack of context, you spend more time scratching your head about what he means than you do learning anything.

I usually prefer to buy a good book to learn how to do any new thing but so far with gardening I find the internet to be a better source of information.

Christopher's book is highly readable. . .until he reached the point in his tale of becoming Secretary of State I found it difficult to put down. Chris was instrumental in handling and reporting (and in the aftermath dealing) with many of the urban riots in 1960s after the assassinations of King & RFK, and the urban riots surrounding the political conventions in Chicago. As undersecretary of state under Carter he was the key U.S. player in the Iranian hostage release, warmly adding how a restaurant applauded him at dinner shortly after coming home from those negotiations. Once he reaches Sec of State status in his book, the tale is less engaging but still informative, giving us a sharp and clear inside look at Chris' view of his job, and the policies and outlook of the U.S. government he represented for four years.

More Politicians Should be Like "Chris"

Warren Christopher gives his personal history the most cursory of treatments before plunging into exposition of his interactions with some of modern history's greater figures. At first I found this self-effacement irritating--I wanted to understand what would propel someone to work so tirelessly for his nation, under such trying circumstances as the widespread civil unrest of the late '60s and the hostage crisis at the end of Carter's term in office. Then I realized that Christopher's approach to his memoirs reflects his approach to public service: it's not about _him_, not at all. It becomes very clear as the book progresses that Christopher's modesty, discretion and unrelenting focus on the task at hand have made him the epitome of the gentleman statesman and a model to which other politicians should aspire. Sure, other ex-Cabinet members might write juicier memoirs. But they very likely are not be as widely-respected, or as consistently in demand over decades of American political life, as Christopher. "Chances of a Lifetime" is a worthwhile read for that lesson alone.

If you are looking for a kiss and tell book full of gossip or new and exciting state secrets this is not the book for you. The author may be the last true nice guy in politics and his book echo's his character. The book spends about 30% of its time on his boyhood, working with the LBJ administration and working on different riots in he country. To be honest, this was not what I really was interested in. The rest of the book deals with his work in the Carter and Clinton administrations, which I felt was the most interesting sections of the book.

Christopher spends a good deal of time on his involvement in the Iran hostage crisis in 1979 and 1980 and on the Middle East peace process during his Clinton years. Both areas are well written and interesting, he brings a sense of a true gentleman to his writing - always taking the civil high road in his descriptions. I also found the sections on the personal security given to the Secretary of State and how he travels around the world new and interesting. Overall the author does a good job in this memoir; it is well written and understated. You understand why the author is so well respected; he goes out of his way not to include snide little comments and back- handed attacks that fill so many memoirs.

First of all the format is way, way too small, what was there was nice but I wanted to see more of everything, more recipes, more historical photos, more contemporary photos of the interiors, some advertising and graphic design would have been nice, I came away unsatisfied. Perhaps the author didn't have access to alot of the archival materials since it was going to be sold off to FDS. BOO!

ENCHANTING !! WORTH MANY MORE READS!

This is the one of the neatest little books on Chicago that I have ever seen. Recently, I was on a business trip to the windy city and purchased two little books by Joan Greene that were done as a series for the Chicago Cultural Center Foundation.

The one on Marshall Field's is great -- wonderful photos -- old and new and a good tribute to a Chicago institution that will be changing it's name next year. Growing up near Chicago, Marshall Field's Walnut Room Restaurant was always a treat at Christmas time and I love that the books has several recipes included. What I did not know and the book talks about is the number of retail first that began at Marshall Field's. If you like shopping or history or Chicago, this little easy-read is a must. I am ordering one for my sister to enjoy over Christmas.

P. S. The Chicken Potpie recipe from Field's is included. I remember my mother ordering that when I was a child. The book made me want to stop by Field's for a meal the next time I am in town.

This book not only has recipes from Marshall Field's Restaurants, but also beautiful pictures and a history of the store itself. I was very pleased with this book, I bought three of them, one for myself and one for each of my daughters as a remembrance of all the wonderful times we've spent at Marshall Field's. We all intend to make the recipe for the Walnut Room's famous Chicken Pot Pie!

A great resource that will answer all your questions

If you are like I was about a year and a half ago, you want to go to graduate school because it's the next logical step for a psychology major, but you don't know how to prepare yourself or what is important to have on a resume/vita. Moreover, you need a resource that has all the information you'll need in one place.

That resource is "The Complete Guide to Graduate School Admission." For every step of the process, from getting research experience to accepting an offer from a school, this book will guide you along and prevent you from making catastrophic mistakes out of inexperience. I kept this book around for a year and a half, and referred to it often. As a result, I have been accepted into my top graduate schools, and have received a generous offer of financial aid.

Anyone interested in graduate school in psychology and its related fields of study will find this book useful, but the reader will reap the full range of its benefits by first being exposed to its material as a junior or sophomore in an undergraduate program.

A good start

This is definitely a book worth looking at, especially if you are just starting to look at the grad school application process. The Q&A format makes it easy to read, and the sections on timelines, personal statements, and C.V.s were pretty helpful.

Overall, though, I found it lacking in more specific, in-depth information. The APA's Getting In: A Step-By-Step Plan for Gaining Admission to Graduate School in Psychology is a much better source, especially if you are considering many highly competitive programs.

This book was a great help in telling you all the little things you need to consider when applying for graduate school. It also tells you how to go about the application process, from example letters requesting application materials, to how to write up your C. V. This book gave me the answers when no one else seemed to know and went over the niceties concerning the application process (how to decline an offer, should you visit, the importance of the appearance of your application). I know a lot of these things may appear to be insignificant, but when you're so stressed about getting in, why not do the most you can to improve your chances? You never know, and this book helped me through it. And I DID get in to my number one choice.

If you are already a company level fire officer, or are about to become one, this is a must-have book for you. The author writes about his experiences in a realistic and readable guide to success as a leader and fire fighter.
No smoke and mirrors here, just the stuff you need to do a good job and still work well with your crews and survive in the firehouse.

This book covers the basics of leadership as well as giving very good advice on how to integrate the advice into everyday situations. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for leadership skills, not just firefighters. Chase Sargent gives good down home advice which will help you in your future endeavors to promote your self as a true leader. This book is the one I would take if I could only have one book on leadership.

While not as comprehensive as its companion volume on the German military forces, it is still the most complete work on the Japanese military you can find in the West. Although prepared by the US War Dept., it is not at all the dry treatise one expects from government printing offices, but a highly readable work encompassing every little detail like tactics, uniform, training, equipment (lots of it) and everything you could possibly want to know. The book, though, could have used an index.

Excellent one volume work.

This reprint of a restricted 1944 War Department Publication is a companion to the Handbook on German Military Forces, but necessarily smaller as much less was known about the forces of the Empire at that time. It is an admirable work nonetheless, containing everything of possible use to an Army officer facing the enemy: organization, tactics, weapons and equipment, uniforms and insignia, extensively illustrated and with a glossary of military terms and map signs. An essential resource for WWII buffs, writers and readers of military history, collectors, and modellers.

I just took my GRE subject test a few days ago. And I only studied Kaplan's book for my exam. It was extremely helpful. I enjoyed reading it, and most of the questions on the test were covered in the book. However, there were some terms and names that the book did not cover(e.g. didactic behavioral therapy, relational aggression, ...)

This book is full of typos, spelling errors, and errors in formatting. Also, there is at least one incomplete sentence in the section about REM- I had to look up the topic in other books to figure out what they were trying to say. I have very little confidence in the book, so I've been studying it along with textbooks on each topic. It makes me think that if they spent so little time editing maybe they didn't spend adequate time fact checking either. I'm about to go out and buy a different company's prep book.

Some essays are for 2nd or 3rd level schools, even the original authors got admitted to MBA program, you cannot drew the conclusion that the sample essays are good. I also bought another book from Paul Bodine. Sample essays are for top schools and much more helpful.

This book really makes the difference. It helps to see what other applicants have done to get admitted to top business school programs. By seeing the example essays, you'll find the business school application process much more approachable and you'll be inspired to write your own essay. What I really like is how there are examples from students with all kinds of backgrounds, not just those who have worked in financial industries. It seems like every kind of student can find someone to relate to. I highly recommend this book!
