I like Swindoll, but he rates 3 stars compared to Tozer. If you want to read a great book on God I suggest about anything by A.W. Tozer. The Attributes of God (2 books) are very good and IMHO much more enlightening.

As a new believer, I have found Swindoll's book very down-to-earth and straightforward which I appreciate. The idea that there are many mysteries in God's Word that are beyond our human understanding is reassuring, since I have puzzled frequently over passages that I could not fathom and had concluded that it must be some lack in
me. Swindoll encourages us to trust in our Father's goodness toward his children and to surrender to His perfect will for our lives. I highly recommend this excellent "guide to understanding" especially to those who are new to the Christian pilgrimage. It has become a very welcome companion to my evolution as a believer.

I used to think that I was about the only one who really struggled with knowing God's will in my life. It seemed like everyone else knew exactly what God's will was for their lives. This book has taught me that just about everyone struggles with knowing God's will for their life. And more than that, Chuck gives many "what to do" examples of how to better discern God's will for your life. One of the best parts of the book is that he is unafraid to use real life examples of people who struggled mightily with knowing what God would have for them to do.

I always was puzzled why God would allow someone who is doing the work of God in this life would be allowed to die, sometimes tragically. It made no sense to me. With the aid of this book, I'm beginning to understand more about God and the fact that His ways are often a mystery to me. Chuck explains that God's righteousness is something that is very difficult for a mere mortal to understand and comprehend. God has chosen to do things His way, and that often contradicts what we think He should do, based on our human logic and emotion.

I have read the book once, and it is very much like an excellent movie, in that multiple visits are necessary to uncover all the gems that are to be found there. I plan to read it several times, in addition to my normal Bible study (and not a substitute for it!), because there is so much there it takes several trips to begin to understand something so vast and mysterious as God's will for our lives.

I have several friends and family members who are stuggling with knowing what God would have them do. I plan to get and give them a copy of this book which may help to explain why things in their lives are not working out as they think they should. God's will is still a mystery to me, but at least thanks to this book I know a lot more about how to find it, understand it, and most of all, not sweat it when nothing seems to make sense.

Every Christian I know wants to know and do God's will -- to follow the path that God has set for each of us. Chuck cannot of course provide that, but he does provide some roadside markers so that each of us can learn God's will for our life by prayer, seeking God in our silent moments, and by using some of Chuck's practical suggestions how to travel that road that God has set before us.

Sometimes you know something deep in your heart, but it takes someone else to point them out and make them clear for you. In my case, I had been struggling with God's plans for me, and it took this book to remind me of what I already knew in my heart-"The Lord's mercies never cease. The Lord's compassions never fail. The Lord's faithfulness never diminshes." This book clearly outlines how we can find and use God's will. I particularly enjoyed the extensive use of Biblical scripture, including passages from the little read Lamentations and Job. Swindoll had a way of presenting this complicated and mysterious topic in a way that made me say "duh!" I needed this book, and will recommend to many friends.

A Great Book Of A Very Fascinating Man!

Review Date: 2006-12-18
I rememeber doing a 60-page research paper on Dean Acheson while I was an undergraduate at UCLA; and this book was one of the primary sources of material that I used in my research. The book is a fascinating insight into a man who before, and during the Cold War, was truly 'Present at the Creation.' Dean Acheson was Harry Truman's Secretary of State during one of the most tumultuous periods in American history. As secretary of state, he was one of the primary movers who helped shape and guide the nation's foreign policy for many years to come. Dean Acheson was not only one of the most important men during this postwar period, but as one who helped shape a major part of this country's policies; and he gives a fascinating insight into the policies and decision makers in the government.

In the book, Dean Acheson describes how decisions were made and then eventually implemented. The book, which is Acheson's memoirs of his years in the state department is not dry; but instead a very insightful a engaging read. If you are interested in politics, or history, and wonder how decisions were made that impacted the American foreign policies during the Cold War, then this book is an important read. Moreover, what he discusses in the book has not changed at all in terms of how the government goes about implemeting polices, and those who try and thwart the process: either through political gain or ignorance. Or in some cases a little bit of both.

You might ask yourself, "Why should I care about this man, and his memoirs?" Well the answer would be [from me anyway] that the polices he helped shape are with us today. [Many anyway]. The political structure of the postwar period was primarily designed to contain communism. And as such, the creation of NATO was one of the most important decisions enacted during the cold war era. His insistence [along with Truman] that Western Europe had to be revived and restructered as a thwart to Soviet Russia is an extremely important chapter in our nations history. This book is highly recommended, and belongs in your library.

Long, superb as a primary source, but has problems..

I respect that this book has a Pulitzer for History, and it has a wealth of information for scholars, but for the lay reader, it is too long by 100 pages or so and goes into minute governmental procedures and such, obscuring the good parts of the book. Acheson manages to be hawkish, critical of both parties, but makes a lot of sense too about containment, and realistically looking at the Soviets. I take his comments with a grain of salt, as this is part memoir and apologia. I would have liked to see more of his take on the years after Truman's presidency. And yes, this book did help me appriciate Truman's character more.

It's Amazing That Governments Can Accomplish Anything

A generally enjoyable and interesting book. I hold Dean Acheson in very high regard along with Harry Truman and George Marshall. As other reviewers have stated, those three men (and several others) initiated policies that shaped world history for the next 50 years.

That said, the most fascinating aspect of the book for me was the back-stabbing, political posturing, stonewalling, and unresponsiveness that Acheson described throughout all the various government bureaucracies (both foreign and domestic) - Congress, the Defense Department, Foreign Ministries, Treasury, etc. It drives home to the reader just how difficult it is to get ANYTHING done in government! And it also reminds the reader that the political animosity and disfunction we see in modern government isn't a new phenomenon at all...

Dean Acheson, one of "The Wise Men" who crafted foreign policy from Truman to Johnson, was a great American. I assume it could be debated just how correct our Cold War policy was, but we're all still here to debate the point so that in itself says volumes. President Truman was wise indeed for the trust and extreme confidence that he placed in Dean Acheson. Great reading!

I'm a 16 year old sophmore in high school and have an interest in all history, especially history that took place during the 1930's to around 1965. this book gave very deep and detailed insight into the inerworkings of the stae department after world war 2, and displayed the type of men it took to rebuild governments around the world into well oiled democratic machines. i would HIGHLY reccomend this book to anyone interested in learning a great deal about the state department under truman and acheson, as well as a person just interested in a good read.

After reading the reviews on this one, I got it for some last minute cramming. I would honestly guess that my total score was at least 300 points higher than it would have been without the book. The math section has a good refresher if it's been a while since you took College Algebra and the tips and tricks in the verbal section was really helpful too. If you ask me, though, the "Hit Parade" in the verbal section is worth the 20 bucks by itself. It's page after page of common GRE words and their definitions. About 1/3 of the words on my test were in the Hit Parade. If you need to take the GRE, you need this book.

Bought this book along with ETS' 10 practice tests and studied all summer. This book offered a schedule so I knew what to study when according to how much time I had before the test. The accompanying online access was very helpful. Taking practice tests on the computer as it was for real helped a lot. The instructions about the different types of questions, several practice tests, thorough score reports and explanations of the answers make this one of the best test prep books I"ve ever used. I got a 700verbal 710analytical.

After reading many Amazon reviews, I couldn't decide whether I wanted to buy the Princeton Review book or the Barron's book (How to Prepare for the GRE with CD-ROM (Barron's How to Prepare for the Gre Graduate Record Examination)(16th Edition)), so I ended up buying both. I really like the way the PR book was written - almost as if you're talking to a peer. I actually bought the DVD edition of the PR book, but I never used the DVD. I was disappointed that the book had so few exercises to practice on. The vocabulary section of the book was helpful but not as comprehensive as Barron's. The best part of buying the PR book is the online supplement. My edition came with 3 practice drills and 4 CAT practice tests - all online. The CAT practice tests were especially useful because they're similar to the progam that ETS uses to administer the GRE. Also, when you take a practice test, the PR program records your scores & then gives you advice on pacing & what scores you should aim for based on your previous scores. The CAT practice tests definitely give PR an edge over the other prep books out there.

This is one of the best books that I've found that explains grooming your horse step by step - not only for the show ring, but for everyday maintenance. Ms. Harris details breed protocols for the show ring (good news for the novice showman!). Did you know that it is considered bad form to braid the hunter on the left side of the neck, and vice versa for western pleasure horses? From achieving that showring bloom to step by step braiding guides, this book is a must for any competetive horseman's book collection!

I Love grooming my horses, and this book gives you many new ideas and 'tricks' to try to make your horse have good and healty coat. I doesn't matter what breed or disciplne you show, this book has it all. I show hunter-jumpers and eventing, but I also have two miniature horses that I show and this book helped me with all of them!

If anyone wants to know why the US has a reputation for being less intelligent than the rest of the world, they need to look no further than this book. Reading through it reminds me of several exposé-type programs I've seen about surprisingly inaccurate school textbooks. I'll give one concrete example here; you can find the rest if you're unfortunate enough to own this book.

According to p. 168, 1 quadrillion (1x10^15) BTU = 170 million barrels of crude oil. From p. 167, we see that 1 barrel = 42 gallons, so a quadrillion is about 7,140,000,000 (7 billion, 140 million) gallons.

On p. 169, we're told that 1x10^15 BTU = 180 million gallons. There's a pretty large difference between 180 million and 7 billion. If the book isn't accurate on this small, easily verifible topic, how can you trust them on the more obscure ones?

Don't waste your money on this book, and while you're at it don't waste too much on your children's textbooks either.

Its a very good book, altough you wont find any question you have for science, it tells many interesting facts, and it is distributhed in many topics; biology, astronomy, geology, etc.

I found it good as a book to read while in the potty, but not too good as a reference book, well you can use it to start a good research on any of the interesting facts in the book, but youll only find short answers, and then youll move to other books on the matter..

You will also find it very interesting, because it will give you many topics to talk about with friends, or while meeting anybody..

For example...

Bears at zoos, doesnt hibernate, because they only do that when the dont find much food, and in winter season.

I have three of these books now and I continue to not be disappointed. These books help answer questions that you may not think about but as soon as you read them you end up saying to yourself "hmmm that's a good question"! This book is very cool to read and if you have any interest what so ever in Science it will keep your attention for hours if you let it. Definitely not the type of book you would read cover to cover, it's more useful as a reference guide. I don't see why any college or high school student or anyone for that matter with an interest in science wouldn't have this book. It's a great buy and fun to read!

The Handy Science Answer Book compiled by the Science and Technology Department of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh is a handy volume to have for reference in your home library.

You never know when that question will come up and you have to settle a bet or a dispute as someone invariably will ask a question that you may know or have an idea as to the correct response but with this book you've got the correct answer.

The book is set-up into categories and are as follows:

Physics and Chemistry
Space
Earth
Climate and Weather
Minerals and other Materials
Energy
Environment
Biology
Plant World
Animal World
Human Body
Health and Medicine
Weights, Measures, Time, Tools, and Weapons
Buildings, Bridges, and Other Structures
Boats, Trains, Cars, and Planes
Communications
General Science and Technology

Wouldn't it be great if someone would just collect the answers to some of life's mysteries? Like, just what is syzygy? Why is the sky blue? The answers to these and other questions abound in this book. The answers are written in non-technical language and provide either a succinet response or a more elaborate explanation, depending on the nature of the question. Definitions to scientific terminology are given within the answer itself, and bothmetric and U.S. Customary measurements are listed. Following the main Question and Answer section are suggestions for further reading(most of which were used to answer varoius questions) and the index.

I would recommend this volume for your home library... you never know when your children, grand children, or just yourself will need to find an answer. Or if you suddenly need to know the life span of a chimpanzee. Its in the book you'll find it downright handy.

Every topic was something I'd always wanted to know a little more about.

I have been using Martin Yate's "Hiring the Best" since the late 1990s. This is an excellent reference book for human resource departments, hiring managers, and, also, for those in-transition. I refer to the book when hiring key employees and I encourage those who work for me to use it for interview preparation.

Yates provides a review of situational, personality profile, stress, and behavioral interviewing approaches; knock-out questions; and over 200 questions that will be useful in assessing ability, willingness, and manageability.

Hiring capable, motivated people is considered to be the most important management task. A poor decision results in a whole host of negative outcomes including lost time, expense, poor morale, and, possibly, irreversible negative outcomes. "Hiring the Best" will serve you well when filling open positions in the private, public, or the social sector.

Any manager with hiring authority knows that selecting the "right" candidate for any position is a nerve-wracking task. Professional processes can help you screen, interview and review, but the final choice is often as much art as science. Author Martin Yate's basic book can help inexperienced managers hire effectively, although this useful primer on interviewing and hiring is a little wordy. Yates provides great detail about key steps, such as when to schedule a phone interview, what to ask and how to conduct an interview. He even provides numerous sample questions for each major job category, from entry level to management. Is it a little too basic? Perhaps for some, but we recommend it for new managers who are inexperienced at hiring. Although this book covers the fundamentals of hiring, it can't guarantee that you'll make the right choice every time. Then again, that book probably hasn't been written.

I took classes, read books and did everything I could to become a skilled interviewer. Without question, one of the most helpful tools to escaping Bozoland was this book. Although I am now a freelance business consultant and have no employees of my own, I frequently assist my clients with their own hiring processes, and in so doing I still refer extensively to Martin Yate's excellent book.

Anyone in HR who doesn't feel their job is in peril is probably delusional. In order to preserve one's position, and more importantly, contribute at the highest possible level to an organization, HR pros MUST transform themselves into strategic partners. For many, that is a daunting task. Ulrich is the father of strategic HR thinking, and this book, written with Brockbank, is a superb roadmap. Along with explaining the concerns that inform strategic thought, the authors provide a step by step means to assess and address the strategic concerns of one's organization. HR professionals who are motivated to leverage their own value and deepen their organization's real strategic strength could not do better than starting their study here.

If you're an HR practitioner, skip this book. If you're an external HR consultant, read it and use the terms and ideas to sell your services.

The authors want HR to get out of the HR business and into being management consultants with an HR background who solve business problems. The book encourages HR practitioners to become adept at the business by knowing its financials, customers, products, etc, so that they can solve a myriad of business problems or give input to other departments. The value proposition is that "HR aligns with the requirements of internal and external stakeholders." The example that is intended to illustrate this HR value proposition tells of an oil company with a shrinking market share, where marketing didn't take the lead on a customer survey but HR did. By doing so, HR was able to show that service was a key differentiator, thus proving HR's value to the firm. However, this isn't really HR, and most of the examples are would fall into general management consulting.

After the transactional work of HR has been automated, centralized, eliminated, or outsourced, what is left, and of greatest value, forms the core of this book. In brief, the book is about creating a business-oriented HR function. The book's springboard is a range of future-focused questions such as:
- Why does HR matter so much today?
- How can HR get line managers to be concerned about HR issues?
- What can HR do to connect with the interests of all stakeholders?
- How to create a strong line-of-sight between business strategy and HR.
- How does HR contribute to intangible value creation?
- What are the evolving roles of HR? How can HR be organized to be strategically focused?
The authors confront these challenges with clarity and insightfulness. The central message is that HR must deliver value in the eyes of line management, investors, customers, and employees.

The book is organized around an "integrated HR blueprint" consisting of five elements:
- external realities;
- stakeholders,
- HR practices,
- HR resources, and
- HR professionals)
From these the authors have set forth 14 criteria that profile an effective HR function. To bring these criteria to life the authors present a four-phase process for transforming the HR function-this process integrates and applies the book's central themes. The book is broad-ranging and compelling. We very highly recommended this work. Every HR practitioner should consider this book must-reading.'

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Chief Lasky brings it back to the basic's of why we do what we do and to remind us to set the example. Have pride in our department, ourselves, and our communitiy. This book should be a must read for everyone in the brotherhood. Espescially new recruits.

I just purchased the complete set of the Cherry Ames nurse stories that were written by Helen Wells. The packaging was beautiful and the covers looked exactly as I remember. I enjoyed reading about Cherry's adventures again as much as I did when I was a young teen. I would also like to purchase the Cherry books written by Julie Tatham when Ms. Wells took some time off. I purchased Cherry Ames at Spencer and it was great. I hope others will enjoy them as much as I have. The sets are also very reasonably priced.

good, but better at first

The Cherry Ames novels tend to be a little less interesting as they go on. I still think the first four are the best. They still show the variety of possibilities available to nurses, most of which are still options today. Even though I am a physician, I was still surprised by some of the options available to nurses that I hadn't thought of. As a physician, it's interesting to see a historical snapshot of medicine in the 30's-40's. These stories appealed to me as a young girl when I found them on an aunt's shelves, and they are still fun to read.

Retro Detective Nurse Series Makes A Comeback

Cherry Ames makes a comeback. Fresh, lively confections that enthralled me as a kid don't hold up quite as well to the adult reader, but that's not the point. Mystery Writers of America member Helen Wells fleshed out a peppy prewar characterization of a high-spirited eighteen year-old nurse whose high-spirited, curious ways get her in entertaining fixes as she pursues her nursing degree and a few dreamy doctors. I bought the first few books at a garage sale in the early 80's for 25 cents and they still have a place of honor on my bookshelf. The later books tended to have a churned- out, formulaic quality with a bevy of different writers who can't capture the zeitgeist. I think today's kids would definitely have a snoozefest with these books. In addition, my mother, who graduated from nursing school in the early 60's, tried to get through the first book, but couldn't. I guess there weren't enough draconian spinster teachers, full shifts on the floor, and egomanical doctors for that realistic kick!

Every Girl Should Read This Wonderful Series!

What a delight to rediscover our courageous nurse Cherry Ames all over again! Let Cherry take us back to an era of simple virtues where honesty and integrity mattered. Cherry Ames is a series most of us baby boomers remember reading, along with Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, Vicki Barr, Dana Girls, Bobsey Twins, Hardy Boys and the like. A true treasure to explore and pass on to our own children or just to read and discover the magic of series books all over again. I would recommend these books to any young girl and I am delighted to see my old friend and nurse Cherry again.

Get lost in a fantastical tale of Hollywood comes to small town

Review Date: 2007-10-31
The second installment of the Bottom Dollar Girls series was a quarter of a step up from Bet Your Bottom Dollar. The narration is in third person. We see much less of Elizabeth Polk; references to her family history are made, and that made me cringe! Instead, we learn about Elizabeth's best friend, Chiffon Butrell.

Lots of drama is happening in Cayboo Creek. Chiffon's husband, Lonnie, has abandoned his family to live with a movie star in California. The senior center is losing funds. Virgin Chenille Grace, Chiffon's older sister, is makes her identity through her teaching job, until she comes face to face with a new papraprofessional.

Lonnie and his new woman put Chiffon through living hell. While the fascination of the stalkerazzi is a bit overblown in some places, it's still very entertaining. Chiffon needs a lot of financial help, especially once she's injured. Thank goodness Chenille comes to the rescue. Chenille, who recently lost her teaching job for very believable reasons, helps her estranged sister. Chiffon and Chenille can count on the Bottom Dollar girls for help, and a few news ones, like Gracie Tobias.

Chiffon knows Lonnie isn't faithful, yet she's always seduced by his good looks. She can forgive him for sleeping with the town floozy, but this time, he has gone too far. We see Chiffon heart-broken and virtually penniless as she deals with the stalkerazzi camped outside her home. Chiffon becomes the focus of celebrity rags and tv shows. The class differences are duly noted, which is par for the course in the world of the rich and famous. Will Lonnie return to his family? Will Chiffon realize that he is a dirtbag? And what's the deal with his new girlfriend? We learn the answer to all of these, as well as gain insight into Chiffon's own history.

Chenille is so busy caring for family, will she ever find true love? She was always so plain that she never even had a date! Will things change now that she's back with Chiffon? Yes, Chenille becomes torn between two men: veterinarian Drake and country Garnell. Gillespie does not develop Drake's character much, which frustrated me. But, you'll soon see why he's a very flat guy. A very keep piece of the story. Garnell, on the other hand, is not the stereotypical southern guy that Gillespie included in the first book. What a relief!

And finally, what about the senior center? The gals devise a not-so-original plan for fundraising. (And Gillespie mentions where the plan originally hatched.) Will this plan work in this conservative town?

I found this book to be much more fun than Bet Your Bottom Dollar. This time, I found the answers to my questions within the prose. I had questions about Gillespie's writing style, but I now know why she did what she did in terms of character development. If you want to read a KAren Gillespie book, start with A Dollar Short.

New beginnings start here in this sequel Very humorous!

This book begins with Chiffon, who has three kids and the bottom suddebly drops out of her life when Lonnie her husband, takes up with a movie star having an open affair. When Chiffon goes to the airport to meet Lonnie after a supposed "business trip," he is nowhere in sight. In disbelief, Chiffon has no choice but to return home with the bewildered kids, and finds a message on her machine from Lonnie that he is in love with someone else who's a hot actress, and he wants a divorce immediately.

And that is not the only thing wrong either. Chiffon has lost her job as a waitress at the Chat N' Chew after all these years, so now she is really up a creek for money and can hardly feed her kids without her snotty mother's help as she makes Chiffon feel more like a failure than ever.

Chenille, Chiffon's sister is having her own terrible problems with her own job as a schoolteacher for slow learners. Chenille's teacher assistant, who disapproves of everything about Chenille's classroom discipline threatens one of the students with a machete. Chenille gets the blame though for letting that happen, and is immediately fired from that high school for good. So she sinks deep into depression, not getting out of bed until her mother calls and pleads with Chenille to please come up to North Carolina to help Chiffon as she has broken her ankle and needs help with everything. So Chenille packs up her mutt Walter, and away she goes. She just knows things will get testy, as she has never been able to get along with her family, much less her sister before. There was a lot of sibling rivalry between them which the two never overcame.

Once Chenille arrives there, she gets the house in order. She settles in, and as time marches on, the two sisters become closer. Chenille meets a man, Drake who is a veternarian and he comes on to her immediately. But Chiffon doesn't like him, and sees in him a smooth character that would hurt Chenille deeply. Chenille doesn't listen to her sister's concerns, even as Drake wants to marry her in a hurry in Rome. She begins to suspect the kind of person he is when going through his apartment and finding clues to hidden secrets.

Garnell is a plain ordinary man that is down to earth and has always liked Chenille. However, it takes awhile and a bad experience with Drake before she sees this.

Lonnie reappears, and Chiffon is a big sucker and falls for his tactics once again.

Elizabeth, a character in the last book is happily married to Tim Hollingsowrth and had her first baby Glenda. She continues to help the Dollar Emporium grow in their business by leaps and bounds.

I am anxious to read the next one, Dollar Daze. This book made me laugh my head off in many places. Some of the other ladies are quite eccentric.

Great Fun

Who wouldn't love these books? Full of hilarious moments, you will read it one sitting. We have two sisters who haven't had the best relationship. When Chiffon wins a trip to Hollywood, she has purchased a new Kmart outfit, all ready to go. At the last minute, her youngest has a fever, and so she tells her husband to go ahead. Her husband Lonnie hasn't always treated her right, cheating on her and taking advantage of her. She finds out from the TV of all places that her husband is shacking up with Jay-Li. The media gets ahold of this story and has a field day with it. Chenille, Chiffon's sister, has never married and is a school teacher. Her teaching assistant thinks she has the green light to help discipline the children, wields a plastic machete, to scare the children. Chenille has been let go from her job because the assistant said she told her to do whatever was necessary to keep the children in line. Well Chiffon is stuck with her and Lonnie's three children, and has an accident in the grocery store after seeing tabloids with Lonnie and Jay-Li all over, spraining her ankle. Their mother is going to Europe and asks Chenille to assist Chiffon. Together they tackle the world, each ending up a little richer in love and life. I can't wait for the next one to come out.

A hysterical romp from small-town south to Hollywood.
