A good review of developing nations trade policies
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-10
This book is an interesting review of major policies adopted by developing countries for the last few decades, and the implications these have had on the development of the countries adopting them.

Krueger is obviously a strong proponent of free trade and against industrial policy, and she makes a strong case that, even if these policies could be used positively, the political decision making process neutralizes good intentions and practically ensures that industrial policy will reach a sub-optimal point, below where pure free trade would be. One interesting conclusion that I would like to read more about is the fact that she finds that higher imports are in fact more important than higher exports in the development of a country.

This is a book of impecable analysis and good sensible economic recommendations, though it will contradict much of what anti-globalizers think is true.

Raising the Standard of Business Writing
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-13
After much searching, I'm finally rewarded with an article that demonstrates how a high standard of technical/business writing can be an effective tool for good management. The author describes a sensible solution with methodology that is scientifically proven to work -- writing for the reader, or as she puts it, Writing for Real People. She makes a great case for understanding business correspondence from the perspective of the recipient. And the outcome is impressive: 1) doubling the reader's comprehension rate; 2) promoting a team approach in an essential government agency (VA); and 3) greatly reducing support calls.

A well-written book that doesn't talk down to its readers. Ms. Hallinan's prose flows well; she knows her subject, too, and that's a very big plus.

I like reading this book because it was interesting and cute. It was about a boy named Tommy Pickles and his toy hippo Harry. He got Harry from his grandpa Lou on Valentine's Day. I like the end when Tommy hugs Harry. I learned that babies think they know what you are talking about but you are talking about something totally different.

Wonderful Glimpse into SB Fire Department

Being born and raised in San Bernardino, Mr. Shaw's book is a fascinating look at the San Bernardino that my great-grandparents, grandparents, and parents knew. The book is full of priceless pictures that illustrate the development of a premiere fire department and a town into a city. My family recently gathered around the book oh-ing and awe-ing at pictures that spurred memories of days gone by. This is a book to be included in the library of every family in San Bernardino. Thank you Mr. Shaw for such a wonderful look at our town and our heros.

A much needed work

There is a lot of San Francisco history that is easily neglected and almost forgotten amidst the hustle and bustle of the ever progressive and changing city by the bay.

The Images of America has helped correct this neglect with a series of excellent little picture books about some of the aspects of history that are fun and fascinating.

This book on the brave men and women firefighters starts out with the colorful private fire companies of the 19th century. Indeed, San Francisco being a wild and crazy place
it burned down a few times, a companies of fire fighters were essential. Later, when the 1906 earthquake and fire hit, they were mostly a city run organization, that did their heroic best to respond to the disaster.

Other famous fires are covered as well, such famous hotel fires, Sutro's Cliff House in 1907, Sutro baths and St. Mary's cathedral. Also covered are changes in equipment ,uniform and personel. And all of the pictures are excellent and some very rare.

A great addition to any library of San Francisco books.

I thought it was a great reminder of how wonderful the police officers of San Francisco were and are. ---
I opened the book and found a picture and an article about my father and how he rescued people from a burning fire. An event he never told my mother about, possibly afraid that it may upset her. ---
There were/are so many wonderful police officers in SF I wish the book could have covered more of them.

A thoughtfully written account
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-14
Written by G. Calvin Mackenzie (Goldfarb Family Distinguished Professor of American Government at Colby College and an Adviser to the Brookings Presidential Appointee Initiative) with the assistance of Michael Hafken (Research Analyst at the Brookings Institution), Scandal Proof: Do Ethics Laws Make Government Ethical? offers an insightful analysis of the laws designed to regulate the ethical behavior of the federal government from 1961 (when President Kennedy signed Executive Order 10930), down to modern-day executive orders by Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. These efforts to "scandal-proof" government have been costly to finance in terms of taxpayer dollars, yet they have they been successful? Examining their real impact on how things are done, and presenting the question of whether there are better ways to bring more honesty to Washington government, Scandal Proof is a thoughtfully written account and highly recommended for students of Ethics and Political Science.
