This is a thorough guide with great illustrations and photos. It's a bit big to stuff in your pocket. Much more thorough than my well known field guide. I am a teacher and its great. But I wish I owned when my kids were young . The last creature identified was a Diamond backed terrapin. Useful accesories?; nets, buckets, microscope.

You would think that this would be a dull, committee bureaucrat's delight. No, it offers insite on how to teach in clear language and ties sub-topics together such as Geometry with Algebra in ways that will please you. In short, the authors of the California Standards are on the same page as California teachers. The writers are not dictatorial; they created a book for your shelf.

One of the best 9/11/01 Photo Books
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-20
In the time period immediately following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, numerous books on this subject were being knocked out on a regular basis. Their content and quality were spread over a wide range. Most of those books had their run and are no longer available. There is no doubt that the attack on the World Trade Center was probably one of the most photographed events in history. This brings us to the latest book on the topic: MAYDAY! MAYDAY! MAYDAY! The Day the Towers Fell. This book is different in that it is a collection of color photographs taken by well-known fire photographer Steve Spak. Few photographers have been able to capture the events of that day from a firefighter's perspective. Steve has accomplished this. Arriving minutes after the second tower fell, Steve shadowed operating units and documented firefighting and rescue operations immediately following the collapses. These are powerful, close-up images that few people, other than firefighters operating at the scene, experienced. He has recorded history in his photographs. This book is available in either soft or hardcover versions and is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in FDNY or in the events of that horrific day. Author information is available at www.stevespak.com.

A necessary resource to improve ACT score
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-01
I used this book along with the Real ACT book, the Sparknotes Guide to the ACT book, and the Dummies ACT prep book. I found that this book was one of the more helpful ones. I was skeptical at first to buy this book, as the ACT content can get distorted when it isn't written by the actual ACT writers. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the practice tests in the book resemble the real ACT tests greatly. The writers of the 10 McGraw Hill Practice ACT (as stated in the introduction) analytically scrutinized the content of the real ACT and emulated it in the 10 practice tests. The only defect is the answer explanations. The explanations are very succinct and sometimes you don't understand why you got the wrong answer. But that is not the case with all the answer explanations. In order to significantly improve your score, taking practice ACT tests greatly helps. Therefore, this is one of the best resources to use to improve your ACT score.

This book helped me get a 33!

This book arrived within a few days of placing my order, even though I chose the slow mail route to get it. The book arrived in great shape (new) and I was certainly taken aback by the amount of information that was jam-packed into such a small book. I learned more about the types of media, their ethics, and how an emergency responder can conduct an interview with them and be placed in the best possible light, given the media's tactics of trying to trap interviewees into either saying something or acting a certain way in order to get more out of a story than there really is. I definitely recommend this book to others who may have dealings with the media (either presently or in the future).

Extremely interesting descriptions

If you're fascinated by chemical and biological warfare like I am, then this book is probably going to be a bit disappointing. It's neither gruesome nor graphic nor is it filled with interesting anecdotes or suggestions. If you're a millitarists, or in the military, this book will be of great value to you.

It will also make you feel allot better when you learn just how difficult these weapons are to manufacture and deploy effectively. Breath a sigh of relief - you're much more likely to be shot or beheaded or blown up than killed (deliberately) with a chemical or biological weapon.

Unless you're in the Navy. Ships are perfect targets. This book is a must read for whomever is in charge of CBW ship security. You are the most vulnerable of all.

If you're really looking for something creepy to read that will fill your dreams with murderous psychos hell bent on anarchy read Uncle Festers classic 'Silent Death'. I'm a chemist, like Fester, or John 'Whatever the heck is name is from some Great Lakes State'. Now there is one pissed off dude. He may be a meth-head and all around anarchist waco - but his chemistry is straight and so are his recommendations for the best chemicals to use for a given target. When he says "now this is a gas I can get excited about' he isn't kidding. I won't spoil the surprise about which gas is by and large the best, but i'll give you a hint - we breath it all day every day.

This is, by far, the most outstanding primer to introduce the intricacies of Sri Aurobindo's insights to mainstream academicians in their language. Lucidity and brevity are the hallmarks of this philosophical commentary. Many find it easy to nurse the notion that western philosophy doesn't hold much value before the Integral Philosophy of Sri Aurobindo. On the contrary, Dr Maitra delineates the elements of the western thought precisely to emphasize how essential it is, in order to decipher the voluminous writings of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother.

Excellent Primary Account of World War I
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-27
I don't even like primary accounts of battles and wars very much, yet I still loved this book. It tells of the doughboys' journey in World War I, from beginning to end. The author integrates the state history into the entire war, making it not just a boring book about North Carolina's participation. The integration makes it tell about North Carolina's participation, but not so much as to cause the book to be dull and unclear about what else was going on. Rather he tells it first from the national point-of-view and goes into detail about what role North Carolina had to play in the events. This a good book whether you are a World War I buff or just interested in World War I history.

NOT ALL GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS ARE USELESS!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-11-08
Migration of Birds by Frederick C. Lincoln and illustrated by Bob Hines is a government circular. The one being reviewed here dates 1950. There are more recent editions of this little book, but I review this one to emphasis the fact that there are many of these old government publications around that are quite useful in several ways. There is of course the historical aspect, but I find it fascinating to compare the data found in this work to that of the data which is being gathered and published today. Migration patterns, just as ranges, vary over time due to a number of different reasons. This particular circular which is 102 pages in length covers the origin of migration, time of migration, how birds migrate, where birds migrate, routes of migration, evolution of migration routes, vertical, vagrant, and perils of migration, influence of the weather on migration, problems of migration and then draws several conclusions.

Like most government publications, this one can be a bit dry but is well worth the effort it takes to stay awake while reading. I am particularly interested in the banding projects which took place in the early and late 1940s. This gave us quite a good data base and methodology at that time had advanced to the point of being quite reliable. Of course the data found here is merely of passing interest unless it is compared to the published work we have access to today; either government, private, book form or on-line.

I also find that so much information, much of it free, can be accessed through the government printing office and has been available for years. This particular publication is of value to me as it contains a wonderful bibliography of source documents dating back to 1888. These early documents can be found with a bit of digging and research of the interested individual's part. I recently read an article where a certain species of duck was killed by a hunter in the S. United States. This duck was six years old and had been banded in Japan! Fascinating!

Anyway, this is not one you probably want to rush out and buy as not ever one has a curiosity for completely obscure facts as I have. I found the little book to be fascinating though. I have to give this one five stars, not because it is the beginning and end of all books covering this aspect of nature, far from it, but for the fact that is simply tickles my fancy. This book, by the way, is long out of print.
