My son loves this book - it's the first book that has really captured his attention. It has a cute story, wonderful illustrations, and a lot of things going on all at once. He can look at a page many times and still find something new. It has neat little windows and a few flaps to look under. It has a young child's favorite things to recognize - a dog, fire trucks, a mouse, picnic foods, hats, the moon, a mailbox, etc. I only wish there were more pages!

Solid information from the U.S. Government
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.

This is not some hippie commune book but a solid book of tried and true methods for small farming. It's extremely practical advice from an entity (U.S. Government) with a vested interest in having at least a fraction of their population with the know-how to live off the land in a pinch, or for the hell of it.

I couldn't put this one down! Intriguing use of chi-square analysis. Generous use of PERT and GANTT charts livened up the story to be told.

An in-depth look into the lives of the brave men and women who risk their lives every day to hold back the tide of darkness and chaos. A richness of descriptive detail, much of it generated by actual research on location, gives the book a compelling -- and occasionally shocking -- tenor.

Paul Ditzel is the undisputed Dean of Fire Service authors - and this is certainly his finest effort. It's a fabulous book for the coffee table or den. If you are a Firefighter (or ever dreamed of being one), this is your book.

Even those who aren't "Fire Buffs" will fall in love with this book and Paul's writing style. You just can't put it down! I've read the book cover to cover three times, and still enjoy skimming through the hundreds of pictures and re-reading the often dramatic text.

I got goosebumps as I "rode along" with Los Angeles Firefighters on some of their most harrowing adventures. Even if you have never been to Los Angeles, you'll learn of the city, its people - and the LAFD heroes that save us from disaster on an almost annual basis.

One great read... and a bargain to boot!

A fair and balanced history with GREAT photos
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-06
The photos in this book are amazing! They tell a fair and balanced story, including the good and the bad. Plus, the captions give more than just the typical i.d. info -- they tell a bit of the story behind each image. There's also a well-written historical section at the beginning. Definitely one of the best histories of the LAPD ever.

Louisville Fire Department

When I first look at the cover I see a simple but effective one. The fire department's patch is gold plated on the front. As I continue through the book it gives me a detailed account of the departments history well before they were formed into a payed department. Almost for every story they tell they include a photo be it in color or black and white. Along with the history of the department they also include a history of every fire station. This history includes recent photos and in some they include the original buildings as well. Another good part of this book is that it does have alought of pages in color. The most effective part of the book are the mug shots of the department's personel. This section gives the community a chance to meet all of Louisville's Bravest men and women. This is a great book and you must have it in your collection whether you're interested in the fire department or you're a citizen who would like to know the history behind your fire department.

The best and most complete SOURCE OF INFORMATION available
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.

Having had a copy of this book in it's original paper version I can comment on it's value. It had about 900 pgs. with very good descriptions of the many types of barometers and their applications. Along with its many tables and graphs, mostly entered as appendicies, I considered it one of the best if not the only source of information on this subject.

This 13 page government document, released in 1920, shows the development of Pennsylvania in 13 maps, from the early claims on territory made by Connecticut, Maryland, and Virginia, through the era of donation and depreciation lands, through the three original PA counties beginning in 1718, through the 21 counties in 1790, up until 1920.
