Dr. Chase was a traveling physician who compiled this book of "recipes and information for everybody" including a wide array
of information and home remedies for families. At the time it was published, individual receipes to cure a sick horse or sick
child were quite expensive. Dr. Chase's book of 800 recipes for health remedies, drinks, livestock cures, etc. was a bargain
and a mainstay in households across the continent.
Sections include:
Merchant and Grocer Department
Saloon Department
Medical Department
Tanner,Shoe, & Harness Maker Department
Painter Department
Blacksmith Department
Tinner Department
Gunsmith Department
Jeweler Department
Farrier Department
Cabinet-maker Department
Barber Department
Baker/Cooking Department
Domestic Department
Miscellaneous Department
The information included is wildly varied and fascinating! Dr. Chase even advocates humane treatment of animals (includes illustrations for saving injured horses), instructs young people in how they can be successful, etc. etc. etc.
Just a wonderful book of frontier/19th century wisdom! I have the 38th edition, which was published in 1866.

This is an important book because it critiques a glaring problem in higher education in general, and specifically in the massive
University of California system. Ever since proposition 209 was passed in California, effectively outlawing affirmative action,
the black student population in the UC system has dropped to absurdly small numbers. In schools like UC Berkeley, which were
once centers of the Black and Civil Rights movements, Blacks are now almost invisible outside of a few courageous and well-executed
protests. Along with the drop in the student population comes a hollowing-out of Black Studies departments. These departments
were formed in the '60's with a mission of community outreach and action. The idea was to have at least one department in
the academy that reflected and worked with the communities that the universities were geographically close to, instead of
keeping the Ivory Tower locked and isolated. But since then, Black Studies departments have lost that mission; they have
become much more focused on the global African Diaspora than on African Americans. Although the African Diaspora is certainly
worth studying, it should not overshadow the importance of African Americans in our own society and culture. Brown discusses
the cultural import of Hip-Hop and its impact on the academy.
Cecil Brown discusses all this with the voice of experience: he has been in and out of the UC system for much of his life, and experienced shocking racism and exclusion from the system.
This is a book that the right people need to read. Anybody who is in higher education (especially administrators) should spend time with this book, and think about these issues. In a time when racial diversity has become a catch-phrase, what are we doing to create a truly more equitable society?

Here are the Anglo-Saxon charters of Essex, as were known at the time that this book was published. It is indispensible to
anyone interested in the history of Essex, England.
It is high time that the two volumes were conjoined into a second edition, supplemented by the newly discovered charters, and as many Anglo-saxon wills mentioning Essex property as possible. This material has to be considered by all local historians of the county.

Set out in alphabetical order and written without fear or favour, the United States Department of Defence have provided one of the most important research tools of modern years and I congratulate them for an excellent job of work. The entry for each ship commences with a note about the origin of the name. For example, the USS Missouri is named after an American state - enough said. The Aaron Ward, however, was named after Admiral Aaron Ward and that particular section commences with a most reasonable biography of the man.
Each ship to bear a particular name is covered in varying degrees of detail - largely dependant on what historical information was available to the compilers. Famous ships and, naturally, more recent vessels, get excellent coverage although it must be said that if the information was available on those much older vessels, then their full story is told here.
Watch out for single volumes being sold separately - when you are either looking for a complete set or perhaps a different volume.
Altogether, one of the best additions to my library for a very long time.
