An invaluable reference

Review Date: 2008-09-23
This August 2008 update of current military terms and acronyms is invaluable to anyone trying to keep up with military affairs. An already enormous book, this title does have one drawback - it does not go down into the details of the various services' particular jargon, remaining at the DoD level. It is, nevertheless, a huge help to readers and researchers, moreso because the definitions are "official" and not the inferences of journalists or other professional nonmilitary types. Highly recommended.

Good start for assessment planning and record keeping

Dr. Nichols provides a good overview of the assessment process in this book. It follows on his several others. Most important: This book has sample assessment records in it - thus it is excellent for those trying to set-up an assessment program in their department. We used it for our initial template for ABET and SACS records. Even the most confused (stubborn?) came around after reading it. For beginners and veterans alike.

"To Designing Men...and Other Advertising Artists"

...reads the page before the introduction. This is one of a series of 4 books on advertising design that Carlyle, Oring, and Richland put out for McGraw Hill.

A glorious paen to a particular sort of mid-century American graphic design, this was designed to be an in-house manual used by working designers -- bound in cloth-covered hardback boards with a spiral binding on heavy cream-colored stock. The book doesn't particularly care if the images in it provide inspiration or are ripped off. The book exists to be used.

The black and green half-tone images are beautiful, banal, consciously kitschy, or unconsciously kitschy; they are all excecuted with confidence and a high level of craft.

The original and the best
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1998-03-24
The Essex Design Guide was the original design book for residential areas. This ground-breaking publication soon got well-earned respect across the country and was subsequently copied by many other local authorities. Its success also had a huge impact on national housebuiling companies who soon added vernacular Essex neo-traditional styles to their other off-the-peg designs. Soon, towns the length and breadth of the country were to have their own little part of Essex. Now, the ideas in the book are a little dated, but the naivety of the line drawings and the 1970s style are charming none the less. In February 1998, the long awaited sequel to this was published by Essex County Council, incorporating the best ideas of 1973 with the new ideas of the 1990s.

Peripheral brain in your pocket
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-11
A "quick reference" handbook should be small enough to tuck in a pocket -- and this one is. It should be comprehensive enough to cover the more common problems for which quick information is needed -- it does! And it should be organized in a fashion that makes retrieval of information quick and easy -- again it succeeds. There's just too much data involved in the practice of Emergency Medicine to remember it all with complete accuracy, and this little "peripheral brain" gives accurate, relevant and critical data when the emergency physician most needs it. It's not just for the new EM physician, but is a gold mine of info for the "old gray-hair" with years of experience! The only fault I find is that there is need for a new edition -- new drugs, new ACLS recommendations, new technology have come on the scene since this 1995 edition was first put in print. There's so much useful data that it still should be at every EM physician's workstation -- or better yet, in the pocket of every EM doc's lab coat!

Bobby Sands gave his life by refusing food until the british government would properly recognise irish republican prisoners of war as political prisoners. He was elected as an MP during his hungerstrike having drawn so much attention through his sheer bravery and honour of the action of his hungerstrike. His words were politically viable and striking not to mention incredibly poetic. This book is written by Bobby during the first 17 days of his hungerstrike. The hungerstike is still commemorated yearly for not only all the men gave but for all it accomplished. The British invaders still refused to grant political prisoner status, and also refused to allow Bobby to speak to the media even afer he was elected MP so, he stuck on w his hungestrike and passed on May 5, 1981. His death caused an outcry against the British government across the world. He is considered a hero by many and by myself. This book is stirring.

I was researching the heroic story of the loss of the USS Aaron Ward (sunk off the Solomon Islands towards the end of WW2) when I came across this item advertised on one of the Amazon websites. Unaware I was looking at an eight-volume set of books, I baulked at the price and decided to search on. Nevertheless, I kept coming back to this item and decided to take a closer look. I am so glad I did.

Set out in alphabetical order and written without fear or favour, the United States Department of Defence have provided one of the most important research tools of modern years and I congratulate them for an excellent job of work. The entry for each ship commences with a note about the origin of the name. For example, the USS Missouri is named after an American state - enough said. The Aaron Ward, however, was named after Admiral Aaron Ward and that particular section commences with a most reasonable biography of the man.

Each ship to bear a particular name is covered in varying degrees of detail - largely dependant on what historical information was available to the compilers. Famous ships and, naturally, more recent vessels, get excellent coverage although it must be said that if the information was available on those much older vessels, then their full story is told here.

Watch out for single volumes being sold separately - when you are either looking for a complete set or perhaps a different volume.

Altogether, one of the best additions to my library for a very long time.
