This book dispels many of the myths put forth by our Liberal-Left Media(eg> NY Times, WASH Post, CBS, CNN, etc.) Chief among them is that USA was propping up the Battista regime, documents prove that USA wanted Battista gone as much as the Cuban people did. Another myth, that the USA [sic] "drove" Castro into the Soviet orbit. Falcoff shows this to be media myth-making of the highest order. If you're not skeptical of the Left-Wing media after reading this book, you ought to enroll in logic classes at your local Community College!!!

Hillbillies can cook...

Review Date: 2006-05-08
I live in Missouri, and it was our Department of Conservation that had this book by Cy Littlebee (one of the conservationists) published. If you know a hunter or fisher, this is the cookbook to give.
The book has tons of recipes, some by Cy, many submitted by others from around the state, and very few without a bit of Cy's commentary. There are recipes for every kind of fish or game animal or bird you can immagine, every technique (from gourmet to tacking you fish to a bit of driftwood when down by the river), and every taste. The recipes are tried and true, passed down for generations, and while I'll skip some on principle (I'll agree with Cy and let someone else tell me how the book's one recipe for skunk turns outs), many are so delicious you have to try them again and again.
The only complaint I might have with this book is that there are no pictures with the recipes. But the down-home way they are all written, and the conversational way Cy describes them, you don't really miss it.
I recomend this book to anyone who hunts or fishes, lives with anyone or hunts or fishes, or even knows anyone who hunts or fishes. The recipes won't steer you wrong, and you will find so many more ways of preparing your game than you ever thought possible.

This has been one of the most requested bedtime-story books at my house. It's a great tale and is wonderfully illustrated. Daisy, tired of the humdrum farm life, seeks adventure in the big city and lands a job as a fire cow. But only temporarily. As soon as a dalmation shows up, Daisy is to be fired! That is, until Daisy proves to the fire chief that she's got what it takes in a most heroic adventure. We look forward to more Daisy adventures!

Out of print but well worth finding used. A great look at the history of Rich's department store chain of Atlanta (and other southern cities). If you've ever ridden the Pink Pig, eaten at the Magnolia Room, or seen the lighting of the Great Tree, you will love this book. Folksy writing style with nostalgic black and white photos.

The Books That Changed History {4 1/2 stars}
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2003-05-14
This massive multi-volume study of US government policy on Vietnam has permanent value not just for scholars and students of the Vietnam War, but for anyone concerned with the making of American foreign policy. The "Papers" are fundamentally important not only in terms of content, of course, but even more so in contrast to the public statements of our leaders explaining the purpose and progress of the war. While this makes the (self-)deception and lies clear enough, it is the internal dialogue of bureaucratic thinking that is most fascinating.

The format of "The Pentagon Papers" is a bit confusing, with primary documents mixed into the main narrative, but not always in a distinguishable manner. The sheer bulk of the material will naturally deter many readers, but it does repay the effort and is superior to various abridgements. While the expurgated editions are useful, the nature of the selection process gives them an episodic quality, and tends to highlight dramatic incidents rather than the all-important mundane character of bureaucracy, even on life and death matters of global import.

Daniel Ellsberg, who released the papers to the press, may well have some unheroic qualities about him. But his greatness lay in transcending the constraints of background and institutional context, and recognizing a higher duty to his country and humanity. Not only the substance of "The Pentagon Papers" ensures their significance, but also Ellsberg's example of public service. This is vitally important in a time when yet another presidential administration deceives us all in pursuit of fatally flawed military adventures. Who will be the Daniel Ellsberg of the so-called "war on terror?"

Some of the issues raised by "The Pentagon Papers" and Ellsberg's career are addressed in N. Chomsky, "American Power and the New Mandarins" (especially the essays on intellectuals' responsibility); D. Ellsberg, "Secrets;" and from a rather different stance, J. Kwitny, "Endless Enemies." The fifth volume of the "Papers" contains invaluable critical essays by notable scholars such as Chomsky and Howard Zinn. For "balance," also look at Robert McNamara's mature reflections on Vietnam, "In Retrospect." But he still seems to be partly in denial.

A great read from a talented author

Review Date: 2008-07-11
Having quickly perused through this book,, I can say that it is a truly enjoyable read. The author's ability to draw believable characters in realistic situations is extremely impressive, considering the subject matter. If you like mystery, drama, or crime novels, this book is for you. If you like interesting perspectives on political topics, this book is for you. If you think that tougher prison sentences will solve the crime rate, this book is ESPECIALLY for you.
The plot for this book is ingenious, something that only an honest existentialist could think up (wink). Everyone that has read the book has went away impressed with the skill of this self-published and self-made author.
By the way, if you are looking for a good book to read aloud to little ones, you ought to check out his one of his other works, Domino. It's great for kids. As for me, I'm planning on reading some of his short stories.
