Departments Books

This book is a classic reference -- it's been around for a long time, and will probably continue to be around for quite some time to come. I all but slept with it under my pillow during my college days, and now, decades later, I still frequently refer to it. Every subspecies of every wild mammal found in the Lone Star State, from mice to buffalo, is covered here in painstaking detail: feeding and breeding habits, distribution (including maps), population status, very good photographs, and relationship to human society (game animal, crop pest, etc.) is all here. Due to the size and geographic location of Texas, the animals covered in this book range over many habitats from desert to woodlands to subtropical seas -- making it a useful reference tool for zoological study in almost any area of the United States.

Business continuity and disaster recovery are hot topics in IT these days and with good reason. The problem is, no one who actually works IN IT has time to deal with it. Enter Susan Snedaker's new book. I'm a big fan of Ms. Snedaker's, I own her book on IT Project Management and have used it to train my staff on how to manage IT projects. So, I'm already biased toward her books - but even so, this is a great book because, like her other books, she provides the big picture and the details in a really readable style. She starts out discussing the environment surrounding IT and the various kinds of disasters businesses face. Then, she takes the reader step-by-step through the process of planning for a disaster and how to recover the business in the event of a disaster.

One feature that I especially like are the sections by specialists - an attorney talks about data security and legal issues, there's a discussion about the financial impact of a business disaster and another section by a PR expert who discusses how to manage a disaster in terms of PR. These are nice add-ons that I haven't found in other books of this kind - which is why I bought this one and not one of the other ones out there.

Granted, many of us will never get through all the planning steps in the book, but at least you have the checklists to help you through it. These lists also provide a great reality check. The bottom line is this: protect the data you have today then create your more extensive disaster plan. Along the way, be sure you maintain compliance with whatever regulations your company or industry is subject to. If you want the checklists and details that will help you do these things, buy the book. It's the cheapest insurance you can buy.

An intresting insite into the rule books of 100 years ago. From the many hand written and printed corrections proof reading was not of great importance to the company officials. Intresting none the less.

As a drafting department manager I needed to read "Chapter 5, Section B: Selection of CADD Drafters" just to reafirm to myself that there is someone out there that thinks the same way I do. Finding the right kind of person to do good CAD work has been and continues to be a struggle. CADD operators are not necessarily capable of being good drafters and vice versa. This book is like a "pat on the back". I know now I am headed in the right direction for managing the department.

Book is new. It arrived very fast. I intend to maintain my weapon using his book.

I am a Girl Scout leader and I am always looking for craft books with nice craft items and have easy to follow instructions. I borrow this book from the library and was quite impressed. This book has wonderfull picture instructions for all their crafts. A child of 7 years and up would be able to follow most of the instructions without the help of an adult. The basic skills they teach can be built on to higher levels of crafting. They do a webbing project which is good for beginning sewing, easy and colorful cross stitch, simple doll making, beginning knitting (the best instructions I have seen for beginner), marble paper, printing patterns, and other paper crafts. I am impress enough to purchase one for my collection.

Excellent book to have if you trail ride in the mountains. A must have apples and oranges book to understanding your horses feet.

This is a valuable guide for new chairs of the departments. It is a practical guide. It must be on the desk of every new chairman of the department

This is an indepth series of papers on how to retain the first year college student. This is a must read for college faculty working with first year students, administrators who are concerned about first year retention, and even the students themselves. A cookbook on what needs to happen from a pragmatic point of view.

John Chapman (Chappo to everyone who has heard of him) is a rare Australian. He is as Australian as the day is long and is keen to tell people about Jesus. This Biography, by a senior Australian Lawyer, no less (Michael Orpwood is a QC, or Queen's Counsel) tell the Chappo story from his youth in Southern Sydney through the formation of the Department of Evangelism, right up to his retirement. Possibly the best known Evangelist Australia has produced, his style is unmistakably Aussie. You should also try to read his two books 'A Fresh Start' and 'Know & Tell the Gospel).
